1 April 23, 2018 CHUM Vision and Goals Task Force I believe it was last August at our Extended Council meeting that I put forth what I saw as a need for CHUM to do some significant work around our vision statement as well as who we are, where we are, and where we are going. As a part of that proposal, we put together a Vision and Goals Task Force to work on several aspects of our community of faith. The first was to look at our upcoming 2018 Annual Budget and make recommendations to our Finance Committee regarding areas we could adjust, enhance, and be better stewards. The second part of this team s work was to consider where we are in terms of the overall ministry of CHUM. We spent time looking at our Strengths, our Weaknesses, our Opportunities, and the Threats to our way of existence in the community and neighborhood. Out of this conversation came a day long retreat where the Team worked hard at determining what is important to us as a community and how that is expressed in our current Vision Statement. It was discussed and the group felt that while our current statement is a good statement it felt too long and there was not a sense that the church as a whole had embraced it fully. As a result, the Team has put forth a new vision statement for the congregation s consideration. Along with this possible new vision statement the Team also put together a set of five goals and strategies for CHUM to consider. The Team worked hard at setting goals and strategies that were challenging, attainable, and measurable. We have included this Vision Statement and these Goals in the insert in the CHUM Newsletter for your consideration and the Team is asking for input and comment on these statements, as well as offering of help in any one of the areas, goals, and strategies to make these goals come to fruition. These Goals and Strategies will be posted in the Fellowship Hall during the Potluck lunch this coming Sunday, April 29, 2018 with comment cards for those who would like to share with the team your input. Thank you, College Hill, for all you do. I believe it is an exciting time to be a part of this community of faith and the future looks bright. If you have any questions please fell free to contact me or any one of the Vision and Goals Task Force. 5 CHUM Vision Uniting to reflect God s love and grace through inclusion, spiritual wisdom and social justice. Goal 1: Promote Social Justice by creating at least four annual opportunities to effect engagement with society for the common good. A. Create a Social Justice Committee that is intentional about creating social justice opportunities. B. Four events each year to include: *Two panel discussions centered on social justice issues. *Organize/attend as a church one march/rally (e. g. Pride Parade). *Organize legislative field trip to Topeka. *Identify or develop letter writing campaign process. *Connect with Mission Committee to leverage impact. *Promote work of SJ committee externally and on social media. *Engage/include youth in planning and work. Goal 2: Provide a variety of ministry opportunities to attract and retain active members. A. Develop new class options to engage new and existing members. i.e. Older adult singles, Young adult singles (college to early 30 s) Young families, Inter-generational class(es), created around: Specific Studies (like Keith Williamson s Contemporary Studies) Mentoring based (passing on life lessons, idea exchanges) Inspired individual leader based Other (Wednesday night-based classes, like the Lay Academy) B. Develop new activities to engage new and existing members. ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM The tradition of CHURCH is a two-part proposition: Church Service (congregation) and Sunday School (small group studies & fellowship). At CHUM, the overlap of a church service and the classes for well over a decade continues to take a toll on attendance in the form of both fewer and smaller classes. It might even be seen as partial cause for declining church service attendance. Additionally, with no focus on young adults, there is no focus on children. From this writer s perspective, CHUM is well on its way to losing a whole generation: the gap is obvious. A review of attendance numbers would seem to affirm these patterns. This elephant does not inhibit possible expansion and improvement of our activity-based ministries too much. However, the elephant is blocking the doorway to new classes and possible new growth in the Church. Goal 3: Increase income (from all sources) to meet programming goals A. Educate/remind members quarterly on importance of giving (investing) to meet church expenses B. Develop a communication plan/encourage alternate funding sources (Dillons, Amazon Smile, Panera etc...) C. Seek rental income by marketing available low cost office space for non-profits D. Explore creation of a signature annual fundraiser that would raise funds from outside donors E. Explore potential grant opportunities Goal 4: Connect members with spirit in a way that empowers lives - as evidenced by an "increase" in the stories we tell. A. Encourage pastor to create sermons on spiritual empowerment. B. Collect and publish congregational stories of spiritual empowerment. C. Create seminars and workshops on small group spiritual empowerment. E. Encourage Christian believers to be life-long learners beginning with children and youth. have conversations about what is the common good. F. Make the labyrinth experience available several times a year. G. Organize a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. H. Engage in a scientific study of prayer & faith (at the small group and Sunday school class level) I. Develop a book list connected to spiritual empowerment.

6 Goal 5: Increase CHUM s engagement in service and outreach to strengthen internal community bonds & to enhance external community connections. A. Identify & select service opportunities within CHUM and external community. B. Schedule quarterly all church service opportunities. C. Communicate volunteer activities in order to recruit participants. -Facebook -CHUM Newsletter -Bulletin -Verbally in service D. Quarterly service updates-hours served and projects completed. E. Increase internal volunteer appreciation. F. Increase participating in current service activities. TRIVIA & TREATS An Evening of Competition, Laughter, and Fun A big THANK YOU to all who participated and helped with this past Saturday s Trivia & Treats event. There were 11 teams involved in the competition and $1, was brought in! Look forward to another Trivia & Treats competition in August. CONGRATULATIONS to the Chicken Noodles for winning First Place.
