1 Foundations For Your Faith Lesson 6 1 Timothy 2:1-3 NIV Five Key Words for Prayer Read 1 Timothy 2:1-3 carefully, several times, and then answer the following questions from the verses as noted. 1 Timothy 2:1 List the four words for prayer used in the text. (#5 is added for your study) Using your concordance and a dictionary, define each word, and look up and write down at least 3 other places where each word is found Praise 1 Timothy 2:2-3 Why should we pray for political leaders? Every believer should be growing and advancing in the discipline and practice of prayer. It requires setting aside significant time and preparing your heart. The more you pray, the more you will desire to pray. You should also attend prayer meetings where you can assist the brothers and sisters and also learn from them as you pray together. You should begin creating and using a prayer list both as a memory aid and as a means of recognizing God s answers as He responds to your prayers. Use the following list as a place to begin your prayer list. Supplications = Has the word supply in it. To beg for a need to one who can supply. Need oriented praying. To ask God to supply a need. This is the only word that is only used exclusively in reference to the believer and God never as a correspondence among men. These obeyed authorities until the government's will became contrary to God's will. Then they refused! Ephesians 6:18 I Thessalonians 5:17 Often used in the NT with the word supplication. 4 Pray = 318 times in the Bible (KJV) Mark 1:40 - The leper came with a surrendered will to Christ; Totally depended on Him, "you can make me clean;" he did not say "if you can".. he said," you can, if you are willing." He did not know what the will of Christ was, but he didn't doubt His ability!! "If you can" = doubt "if you are willing" = no doubt. 3. Intercessions = Praying on behalf of others To bring the needs of others to the Lord to be an advocate for Gk. word means to come along side with; to enter into conversation with...to strike up a conversation with; the constant awareness of the nearness of God, so that our communion is natural & constant The Holy Spirit and Jesus do this for us..advocacy, assistance See Romans 8:26-27, 34; Hebrews 7:25; Isa. 53:12 4. Giving of thanks = Gratitude for what God has done Being grateful for all things God has done; is doing; and will do according to His will. What is the difference between Thanksgiving and Praise? Thanksgiving is about what God has done His Blessings Praise is about Who God is His Being Holy, True, Faithful, Grace What aspects of prayer are eternal? As we get to heaven, the spectacle in heaven in Revelation 4&5, what do we see taking place? Praise for Who God is His Being Thanks for what He has done His Blessings Will we have to beg for our needs to be supplied in heaven? No! Will we struggle with surrendering our will to Him in heaven? No! Will we have to intercede for other people in heaven? No! Will we give thanks in heaven? Yes! This is eternal! Will we adore God for His Being forever and ever? Yes! This is eternal. Is Thanksgiving all that important? Rom. 1:21 = The start of the slide into total depravity begins with an ungrateful heart. To be ungrateful is to be ungodly. If I am not grateful, I am not godly!!!!

5 Ex. Garden of Eden(Adam & Eve) brought sin to the world; Lucifer(brought sin into heaven); Did not glorify God as God neither were they thankful. Focused on the one thing they couldn t have. One thing became everything, and everything meant nothing! This is where it all starts! This is what we do when we grumble, complain, & find fault!! These are the sins that come from the fact that we do not glorify God as God and we are not thankful. A heart that does not give praise and thanks to God is a heart that is not right with God! Joseph in Egypt was grateful; Eve in Eden felt cheated!!! It s not my circumstances, it s my heart!!! 1 Timothy 2:2-3 Why should we pray for political leaders? They are in authority over us and if we are to lead quiet and peaceable lives in godliness and honesty, we need to pray for God's guidance and blessing upon them if they are believers and if they are not believers we need to pray for their salvation. The goal is for a climate that allows for a great advance of the gospel without political interference. Should we be praying for ungodly leaders? Yes! Who was the leader in Paul's day when he wrote this? Nero Ungodly, wicked, vicious, profligate, sex-crazed, butcher; this very man would kill Paul and Peter. Paul said, "I want everyone to pray for this leader. So we are to pray for all our leaders! Question: Do you believe that Prayer Changes Things? God changes things; It is important to recognize that it is God that changes things, not just the act of praying. Prayer is not magic, it s fellowship! That which God changes more than anything else is the PERSON that prays. Poem: How oft we cry to God, To change the paths we tread; And make them sweet, Though He designed the path of old; And doth desire to change our feet. God does not always change the path, but He ll always change the person who has to walk the path. He is more concerned with character than circumstances.
