Heaven and hell are parts of God s creation just as much as the earth we live in. To live rightly in God s world, we must accept the universe as it is, believe in it, and seek to behave accordingly. The picture the Bible gives of the universe in which we now live is of a three-story house. In this house, heaven is above; hell, beneath; and earth, midway between the two. This model of existence is sometimes dismissed as old-fashioned. But it is the one given to us in the Old and New Testaments. When people believe in heaven and hell, they are compelled to live with great urgency. The realization that life is short acts like a spur in their life, for time becomes supremely precious. Viewing life on earth in the context of heaven and hell is conspicuously absent from our society today. No medicine would cure lethargy and half-heartedness in the church of Christ today more than a good dose of renewed faith in heaven and hell. Empty pews and decaying church buildings are eloquent witnesses that something has gone seriously wrong. If people are not prepared to take that picture seriously, it will not go well for them. Heaven can only be fully understood at the end of the world, when those who are counted worthy will enter in. They will lift up their eyes with unspeakable wonder and delight upon a perfect and glorious universe that calls forth ecstasy and delight. Anthems of worship will issue from the lips of the redeemed people of God. The most we may learn about heaven right now is from Scripture. Though true and accurate, it is only a tiny glimpse into that ultimate reality. taken from The Happiness of Heaven by Maurice Roberts

page new rhb title The Happiness of Heaven Maurice Roberts While belief in heaven is essential to the Christian faith, the fact that pilgrim believers have not yet experienced heaven leaves us with many questions about what it will be like. In The Happiness of Heaven, Maurice Roberts surveys Holy Scripture to tell us what heaven is all about. In his characteristic style, Roberts discusses the biblical data clearly and relevantly, making soul-searching application at every turn. This is not just a book of interesting facts about what heaven is like; it is an appeal to men and women to find their happiness in the eternal comfort of God in Christ. Paperback, 129 pages ISBN Retail Price: $10.00 RHB Price: $7.50 endorsements I have seldom heard a minister preach with more relish, glow, and frequency about heaven than Rev. Maurice Roberts. In The Happiness of Heaven, Roberts shows that same giftedness in writing about the glorious state of eternal bliss. He writes with warmth, conviction, and longing, while not fearing to address biblically the difficult questions in masterful chapters such as Children and Heaven and The Dark Side of Heaven. This is one of the author s best books yet. If you re a believer, it will move you deeply and make you more homesick. Read it repeatedly to lift your soul up above the world and to set your affections on the Triune God and things above. Jo e l R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids The Happiness of Heaven comes from the pen of one who has often visited heaven by faith. Pastor Roberts writes of heaven, not simply as a composite of the books and sermons of others, but from hours of personal reflection on Scripture, many years of deep Christian experience, and years of ministering these precious truths to his congregations in Ayr, Inverness, and to Christians throughout the world. 3 page 3 Hardcover, 296 pages ISBN Retail Price: $25.00 RHB Price: $19.00 endorsement Calvin for Today Edited by Joel R. Beeke Calvin for Today is an edited compilation of the stimulating addresses given at the Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary s annual conference in August 2009, at Grand Rapids, Michigan. The book contains a wealth of information and practical applications about how to use Calvin s thought in our challenging day. Topics include Calvin on preaching Christ from the Old Testament, missions, the church, Scripture, the Spirit s work, redemption, ethics, believers benefits, the early church, reprobation, marriage, and reforming the church. A highlight is Ligon Duncan s chapter on The Resurgence of Calvinism in America. The book concludes with a summary chapter by the editor, Joel Beeke, who expounds twelve reasons Calvin is important for us today. Additional writers include Jerry Bilkes, Michael Haykin, Nelson Kloosterman, David Murray, Joseph Pipa, Neil Pronk, Donald Sinnema, Derek Thomas, and Cornelis Venema. If you can afford only one of the books published on Calvin that commemorated the 500th anniversary of his birth, this is the one to get! Written at laypeople s level, and retaining a flavor of the spoken style, it is informative, stimulating, and practical. This superb anthology of essays exploring the relevance of John Calvin for our times is exactly what we are coming to expect from the faithful, burgeoning Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary and their faculty a strong blend of mature scholarship from hearts promptly and sincerely offered to God. These essays, from one of the most successful North American conferences during the 2009 Calvin Quincentenary cycle, also comprise one of the finest literary offerings on the subject. Readers are given an expert introduction to Calvin as exegete, reformer, preacher, theologian, leader, missionary, ethicist, and to his enduring influence. It is a pleasure to read, it contains fine research, and it depicts the practical side of Calvin wonderfully. I am pleased to commend it heartily to a reading public, who assuredly will discover more about Calvin in future years from essays of this quality. Volumes, conferences, and leaders like these will advance that muchneeded recovery. Moreover, it presents a Calvin who is much harder to hate or ignore perhaps making this book and its thought as dangerous and influential as Calvin s. David W. Ha l l new rhb title

page new rhb title The Seven Signs: Seeing the Glory of Christ in the Gospel of John Anthony T. Selvaggio A major component of Jesus ministry on earth was the performance of signs and wonders. In this book, Anthony T. Selvaggio uses the seven signs given in the first half of the Gospel of John to navigate us toward a glorious destination. This journey begins at a wedding and ends at a funeral. Throughout this trip you will witness the incredible events of water being turned into wine, the temple cleansed, a sick boy restored, a lame man brought to his feet, thousands fed, a blind man gaining sight, and a dead man coming forth from his tomb. While this tour centers in the land of Palestine, it will ultimately take you beyond the finiteness of this created world. For on this majestic journey, you will see more than mere signs and wonders you will see the glory of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God! Contains discussion questions to better facilitate group study. Paperback, 128 pages ISBN Retail Price: $10.00 RHB Price: $7.50 endorsements Jesus messianic signs are at the very heart of John s theological message. The Seven Signs is delightfully written, theologically sound, and spiritually nurturing. I highly recommend it! Dr. Andreas J. Köstenberger John s Gospel is the greatest of all introductions to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Anthony Selvaggio s The Seven Signs is an ideal introduction to John, insightfully unfolding the apostle s use of Jesus signs to show forth the Lord s person and work. When I was first converted, I was greatly blessed by memorizing the seven I Am statements of Jesus which accompany these signs, and they were an effective aid in my witness of the gospel. A renewed emphasis on Jesus signs in this Gospel can only have the effect of strengthening faith and energizing witness today. This book is thus ideal for small group study and for individual devotional reading. Richard D. Phillips

page 5 Piety s Wisdom: A Summary of Calvin s Institutes with Study Questions J. Mark Beach John Calvin s The Institutes of the Christian Religion presents one of the most winsome, thought-provoking, spiritually inspiring, and heart-searching summations of Christian truth ever written. Although works exist that either offer an analysis of Calvin s views or serve as a guide to his Institutes, none fully share the aim of J. Mark Beach s Piety s Wisdom. Keeping to the form, shape, and tenor of Calvin s own work, Piety s Wisdom offers busy pastors, seminarians, interested college students, and motivated laypersons a book that presents Calvin on his own terms. This summary can be used as an introduction to the Christian faith, as a primer for the study of Calvin, or a combination of each. While the book is suitable for individual study, the inclusion of study questions makes it an ideal tool for facilitating discussion in adult study groups. Paperback, 368 pages ISBN Retail Price: $20.00 RHB Price: $15.00 endorsements J. Mark Beach has provided us with a concise guide to Calvin s Institutes that succeeds in identifying its contours and emphases. Calvin s magnum opus can prove tricky for the uninitiated and this volume will be invaluable as a quick and precise summary of the Reformer s thought. An ideal accompaniment for those eager to get their teeth into one of the most important theological texts ever written. De r e k W. H. Th o m a s, John E. Richards Professor of Systematic and Practical Theology, RTS (Jackson), and Minister of Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS Though road maps (or a GPS) are no substitute for the experience of traveling through the countryside, they can be a great help to the traveler in identifying the best route and the high points of the trip. J. Mark Beach s Piety s Wisdom is such a help for the reader who hopes to travel or navigate his or her way through Calvin s great exposition of the Christian faith, The Institutes. Written for the general reader, Beach offers a useful guide that identifies the important landmarks, points the way through, and thereby whets the reader s appetite for a first-hand acquaintance with Calvin s theology. 7 page 7 Hardcover, 160 pages ISBN Retail Price: $40.00 RHB Price: $30.00 endorsements An Exposition of the Apostles Creed Caspar Olevianus Caspar Olevianus ( ) is most known today for his role as one of the authors of the Heidelberg Catechism. He was also an able biblical commentator, passionate preacher, and influential churchman. His place in history is noted as a key transitional theologian, helping to bridge the gap between the first generation of the Reformation and the era of Reformed Orthodoxy. Olevianus s Exposition of the Apostles Creed is a collection of sermons he preached on the basic articles of the Christian faith. It serves as a reminder that the Reformed tradition did not see itself as separate from the universal church, though it was principally opposed to Rome. Rather, Olevianus and his tradition argue for a Reformed catholicity rooted in the ancient confession of the church. This new translation by Lyle D. Bierma, along with R. Scott Clark s historical introduction, will benefit both scholarly and general readers. Charged with federal language, An Exposition explains the Christian faith as the believer s fellowship with God in the covenant of grace. Thus, it is significant for its contribution to the development of Reformed covenantal theology. In addition to exhibiting its historical value within the Reformed tradition, readers will be directed, as Olevianus had intended, toward edification in true and sound piety. also available in this series A Sketch of the Christian s Catechism William Ames $40.00/$30.00 Caspar Olevianus is a significant theologian and his exposition of the creed places him firmly in the great tradition of the church. Pre-eminent authorities on Olevianus, Clark and Bierma have combined to provide a wider readership access to this important source of our Reformed heritage. Clark s detailed biographical introduction effectively sets the work in context, while Bierma s excellent and readable translation is a welcome addition to the corpus of classic Reformed texts available in English. Robert Le t h a m Although the Apostles Creed is ancient, its relevance and simplicity make it a most helpful tool for learning and imparting our faith today. And though the early and illustrious German Reformed theologian, Caspar Olevianius, has been largely eclipsed by the Reformed worthies of the ensuing centuries, his erudition and pastoral skill make his exposition of the Apostles Creed a timeless jewel in the pedagogy of the New Covenant in the kingdom of Christ. Bierma and Clark have richly blessed the church by bringing back to life Olevianus s mini theological masterpiece on the heart of the Christian faith. Peter A. Lillback new rhb title

page new rhb title The Larger Catechism: A Critical Text and Introduction John Bower The Larger Catechism stands as one of the three major doctrinal standards produced by the Westminster Assembly. Often overshadowed by the Shorter Catechism and the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism exhibits the Assembly s most mature theological reflection and insight. In this remarkable volume, John Bower provides extensive historical background for the making of this colossal catechism. He traces the history of the Assembly s efforts from the initial call for a catechism, through deliberations on its form and content, and down to the intricate process of monitoring its printing. The centerpiece of the volume is Bower s critical text of the catechism. Painstakingly checked and indexed, the critical text is supported by a four-column comparison of the authoritative manuscripts and printings. Graced with a glossary, bibliography, and a catalog of corrected proof-texts, Bower s text is sure to be the benchmark for future study, modern editions, and foreign translations for years to come. Hardcover, 304 pages ISBN Retail Price: $40.00 RHB Price: $30.00 endorsements John Bower has produced an excellent critical text of the Westminster Larger Catechism, accompanied by a fine introduction to the document. Given the vagaries of 17th century publication and the existence of two highly significant pre-publication manuscripts, Bower s careful editing of the text and comparative display of both manuscripts and of the two primary printed versions of the Catechism is a major contribution to the study of the Assembly s work. This volume marks an auspicious beginning for a promising series. Ri c h a r d A. Muller, P. J. Zondervan Professor of Historical Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids The Westminster Standards are today of interest both to the confessional tradition of Reformed Christianity and to a growing number of scholars who see the Westminster Assembly as an important factor in understanding British politics and religion in the seventeenth century. Thus, the arrival of this new series, dedicated to the production of scholarly editions of documents associated with the Assembly, will be greeted with pleasure by both groups. This first volume, a critical edition of the Larger Catechism, will no doubt rapidly establish itself and the series as a whole as a standard starting-point for anyone wishing to learn more about Reformed life and thought as articulated by the Westminster Divines. Carl R. Trueman, Professor of Historical Theology and Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

page 9 The Westminster Assembly Project The Westminster Assembly Project The Westminster Assembly Project, best known for the edition of Assembly minutes and papers to be published by Oxford University Press, has now entered an extensive publishing agreement with Reformation Heritage Books. John Bower has joined historian Chad Van Dixhoorn in launching three new series of books by the Westminster Assembly, and one series of new and classic studies on the Assembly, all being published by Reformation Heritage Books. It is hoped that both texts and studies will stimulate further research in the Assembly and the religious dimension of English civil war politics. Certainly future publications on British post-reformation theology and Puritanism will be enriched by these publications, briefly described here. Each volume will contain a historical introduction, a critical text, and multicolumn comparisons of original manuscripts and early editions. The inaugural volume, The Larger Catechism, has been prepared by John Bower. Writings of the Westminster Divines The aim of this series is to provide scholarly editions of texts by Westminster Assembly members and commissioners. Volumes will include previously unpublished manuscripts as well as republications of rare editions. Carefully determined editorial standards will be used to ensure an authoritative product that is accessible to modern readers, while remaining reliable for students and scholars. Barrett For Christians, everything between this earthly life and eternity depends on what we think about Jesus Christ. This book examines the basic, essential, and inseparable elements of the gospel in order to show that everything relates to and flows from the Savior. Salvation in Christ is complete, and we are complete in Him. (PB, Ambassador, 325 pgs.) $17.00/$14.50 The Godly Home Richard Baxter; Randall Pederson, editor The family and home are under attack in our culture, which is what makes this modern reprint so timely. Taken from Baxter s larger work, The Christian Directory, this book gives basic and godly instructions for life at home. The Puritans believed that our homes should be like little churches, governed by the Word for the purpose of glorifying God. Baxter s work will be beneficial to all who read it and seek to implement these godly truths in their home. (PB, Crossway, 224 pgs.) $17.99/$11.00 Pastoral Ministry Richard Baxter Drawn from Baxter s famous work, The Reformed Pastor, and arranged topically as a month s supply of brief daily readings, the maxims and meditations in this little book will not only challenge but encourage the gospel minister to pay careful attention to himself and to the flock in which the Holy Spirit has made him an overseer. (PB, Paulist Press, 360 pgs.) $26.95/$18.00 Repentance John Colquhoun In this treatment of the biblical doctrine of repentance, the author distinguishes between evangelical or true repentance and legal repentance. Though the latter may be produced by a fear of God s wrath and lead to reformation of life, it is an experience which falls short of salvation. Evangelical repentance, on the other hand, is the result of the Holy Spirit s work in regeneration, is inseparable from faith in Jesus Christ, and is evidenced by turning from all sin to God. What once condemned us has now become our rule for life to be lived out in heartfelt gratitude. In the second part of this series, What We Believe and Confess, Pronk emphasizes the breadth and width of the divine Law and tackles difficult questions. This book contains eleven lessons with discussion questions for individuals or study groups. (PB, Free Reformed Publications, 68 pgs.) $12.00/$9.00 The Lord s Prayer: Expository Thoughts with Discussion Questions Cornelis Pronk Prayer is the Christian s vital breath and native air. In the third part to this series, What We Believe and Confess, Pronk explores each of the different petitions in the Lord s Prayer. This book contains ten lessons with faithful exposition and thought-provoking discussion questions suitable for both individuals and study groups. (PB, Free Reformed Publications, 62 pgs.) $12.00/$9.00 Heading for Heaven J.C. Ryle The hope of the Christian life lies not in this world, but in the surety and certainty of the world to come. All fears will one day cease, every tear will be wiped away, and we will be saved to sin no more. Ryle beautifully writes of that future hope stored up for us in heaven and to which we press on day after day. (HC, Evangelical Press, 127 pgs.) $13.99/$11.25 Surprised by Suffering R.C. Sproul Suffering is one of the most significant challenges to any believer s faith. It can catch us by surprise and test our faith to the limit of despair. But our suffering has a purpose: it is a vocation given to us by our heavenly Father. In this book, pastor and theologian R.C. Sproul seeks to confront the difficult questions we face amid suffering and, through the gospel, provide a sure and steadfast hope in that day of trouble. (HC, Reformation Trust, 156 pgs.) $15.00/$10.00 Our Own Hymn-Book: Spurgeon s Metropolitan Tabernacle Hymn-Book C.H. Spurgeon Convinced that there was no hymnal that suited the specific needs of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Spurgeon decided to gather a compilation of the cream of the crop. Without prejudice, Spurgeon gathered from the whole spectrum of religious literature, American and British, ancient and modern whatever magnified the glorious doctrines of grace. This book offers a wide array of hymns and psalms compiled by one of Christianity s most beloved preachers. (PB, Pilgrim Publications, 264 pgs.) $14.00 net Sermons of George Whitefield George Whitefield John Wesley once remarked about Whitefield, Have we read or heard of any person who called so many thousands, so many myriads, of sinners to repentance? Whitefield s ministry throughout England and America was marked with renowned passion, unquenchable zeal, and bold conviction. This volume contains nearly thirty of his sermons, which mesmerized and captivated tens of thousands during the Great Awakening. (HC, Hendrickson, 336 pgs.) $20.00/$12.00

Reformation Heritage Books 2965 Leonard St. NE Grand Rapids, Michigan USA Printed Matter CHANGE SERVICE REQUESTED Non Profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Grand Rapids, MI Permit No. 303 The 17:18 Series Rob Wynalda Why the 17:18 series? In Deuteronomy 17, Moses is leaving final instructions concerning the future of Israel. As a prophet of God, Moses foretells of when Israel will place a king over the nation (v. 14). In verse 18, the king is commanded to not simply acquire a copy of the law (the entire book of Deuteronomy) from the scroll publishing house, but to hand write his own copy of the law. Thirty-four-hundred years later, educators are discovering that students that physically write out their notes by hand have a much greater retention rate than those who simply hear or visually read the information. Apparently, God knew this to be true of the kings of Israel also. From such understanding came the conception of this series of books. How to use these books Each book is organized so that you can write out your very own copy of Scripture. You will be writing the Bible text only on the right hand page of the book. This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page to write your own notes and comments. From time to time a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aid in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments. Books available in the series: Proverbs, 224 pages John, 256 pages Romans, 160 pages Gal. 2 Thess., 224 pages Tim. Hebrews, 224 pages James Jude, 192 pages Hardcover Retail Price Each: $13.00 RHB Price Each: $10.00
