Course Description He loves righteousness and justice (Psalm 33:5) For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:8-10) Christian ethics is the quest to discern right from wrong and good from evil as a prelude to walking in the way of wisdom. 1 This includes personal conduct as well as societal practices. The course aims to provide a Christian foundation for addressing contemporary ethical issues, making moral judgments, and cultivating moral character. It will examine major historical contributions to the field, biblical foundations, methodology, and specific issues. II. Learning Outcomes A. Primary Student Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Gain an understanding of the foundations of ethical theory and applications. 2. Begin a life-long journey of developing competence in ethical decision making and ethical living. 3. Cultivate strategy and skill in influencing the ethical thinking and practice of the world around them. B. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Cognitive: 1.Understand basic issues and approaches in ethics. 2.Grasp the major concepts and concerns of biblical ethics. 3. Develop a basic understanding of a broad range of issues and the main concerns of various perspectives. Affective: 1. Develop an appreciation for the complexity of moral issues, along with a confidence in the sufficiency of God-given resources for ethical development and decision-making. 1 Informal definition.

2 2. Begin to develop deep, well-founded convictions regarding significant moral issues, the imperative of moral living, and the call to be a prophetic voice in their world. 3. Allow themselves to be moved by an appropriate sense of grief for the world lost in sin and confusion, and moved to prayer for their world. Conative: 1. Wisely discern and persuasively present a godly perspective on moral dilemmas that face the individual, the Christian Church and the culture at large. 2. Grow in their commitment and skill in living a Spirit-led, God-honouring life of Christlike virtue that impacts the church and the world. III. Course Evaluation Time Investment and Grade Distribution: In-Class Instruction/Participation 36 hours 10% Reading Log 29 hours 15% Issue Analysis & Presentation 18 hours 30% Position Statement on Moral Issues 20 hours 35% Internet Dialogue on a Moral Issue 2 hours 10% Total 105 hours 100% A. Reading Log 1. Scott B. Rae, Moral Choices pp (350 pp.). 2. Scripture readings as assigned in class. ~ 31 chaps. 3. Read (at least) one academic article on the topic of your paper from a perspective that differs from your textbook. Ideally, this should be a current article. But readings from Clark & Rakestraw Volume 2 are also acceptable. ~ 12 pp. 4. Additional internet research and reading: Find current information on your major issues to aid you in your decision making. Pay attention to the nature of your source! ~ 3 hours. **Record your readings on a reading log, indicating the book or article, and the pages read. You will also include a statement and signature affirming that you have read the pages indicated, along with the percentage of total assigned readings. **In a separate section, list the web addresses of helpful information you have found, listed topically. Due: Thursday, April 12 th, 5:00 pm. B. Class Attendance and Participation 1. Class attendance is mandatory and will affect the grade received for class participation (10%). 2. Students are advised to read the relevant materials in the textbook before class and come prepared with their comments and questions on the topic. This too will affect the grade received for class participation. You don t have to be profound, but you should make the effort to engage with the content. 3. Some class time can also be allotted for discussing the materials and problems that arise in the process of your research or your internet dialogue. C. Research Paper Choose one of the eleven moral issues to be addressed in class and write a six page research paper. Your paper should include: 2

3 1. An introduction that comments on the significance of the issue, and includes your thesis (i.e. position) statement (~ ½ pp.). 2. List and explain the major arguments for each side of the issue. If you can t fit them all in, choose the most important arguments and address them. List the rest in your handout notes. 3. Give some evaluation of the arguments (not in a separate section, but integrated into each point; #2 & #3 should be about 5 pp.). 4. Give a conclusion summarizing your perspective (~ ½ pp.). *Submit a point form summary of your paper for distribution to the class at least three days before the presentation date. Due: 5:00 pm on the last week day before your scheduled presentation. D. Position Statement on Moral Theory and Issues Prepare a statement of your views on moral theory and on each of the (11-13) issues addressed in the course. It is expected that you will have more to say on some issues than others. Articulate your position as clearly and concisely as possible, giving your main reason(s) for holding that position. But do not take up excessive space presenting arguments. This is not an apologetic. The theory section should be about one page in length and the issues sections can be between one paragraph and (max.) 1½ pages. Total: ~ 10 pp. Due: Friday, April 13 th, 5:00 pm. ***WARNING*** This kind of assignment requires ongoing reflection throughout the semester. Do not attempt to start this just before it is due. E. Internet Dialogue on a Moral Issue Engage in an internet dialogue on a particular moral issue, preferably with someone who is in disagreement with you. The aim is to dialogue with knowledge and competence as well as an attractive Christian character. (You need not reveal your Christian identity unless you see fit in the situation.) Submit highlights (cut, paste, and edit) from the dialogue and, if you wish, include additional comments or reflections. ~2 hours. Due: Monday, April 16 th, 5:00 pm. IV.
