2 Message from Pastor Dustin Schellenberg The Church and Mental Health The Church (and by capital C church I mean the greater church across the world) is called to love all people. We are to be like Christ, welcoming all who suffer, struggle and labour and help them find rest. We set up all kinds of organizations to meet the needs of those who suffer, from shelters to food banks and participate in disaster relief across the world. We try to make our buildings accessible to all with consideration to injury and disease and take time to visit people in hospitals or getting treatments. Yet when it comes to mental health the church as a whole is not nearly as good at considering and caring for those who struggle. In mid-august 2018 the announcement that a 30-year-old pastor of a successful church in California had committed suicide shook the evangelical circles I a part of. The pastor had been struggling with depression and a bunch of life and ministry stresses and though getting treatment and taking a short sabbatical to deal with the depression and anxiety, was unable to manage. I ve been reflecting a lot on this because in September 2016 I was diagnosed with Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) or what was once called dysthymia. It s a continuous, long-term form of depression that ranges from mild to severe. This can be hard to visualize but imagine that the average person experiences their greatest happiness at 10 and their deepest sadness as 0 with their normal mood somewhere between 4 and 6. A person with PDD experiences their greatest happiness at a 1 or 2, and their deepest sadness at a -8 or -9 and -10 is clinical depression. The big danger here is the lower that number goes the harder it is to get it back up and the easier it is to slip down into major depression. When a person with PDD becomes clinically depressed they often call it double depression because their natural state is so close to full-blown depression that the mind isn t trying to rebound because it hasn t been stretched as far from normal. But I imagine clinical depression as one of those dry suits for diving. It s huge and heavy and numbs the senses. You labour to breath and if you fall over you will not be able to get back up. And PDD is more like carrying a 100lb backpack around everywhere you go. You have a lot more mobility and can probably get up with enough effort even if you fall over. If you put on one of those huge suits, you ll likely notice that something isn t right (even if you aren t sure what or what to do about it) but carrying around this backpack for so long becomes normal and you adjust to the weight. But as anyone who has held a glass of water at arm s length for more than a couple minutes can attest to, even the lightest weight can become too much over enough time. I only discovered I have PDD because in my final set of interviews while pursuing ordination with the Free Methodist Church in Canada I expressed some concern for my mental health to a couple of the interviewers because I knew both of them had dealt with bouts of depression before so would have some insight into whether I was okay or not. They made seeing a psychiatrist mandatory before I could be ordained (not because they wouldn t ordain someone with mental health challenges, but so I d actually do it and not just say I would). And I think I was hoping that he d come up with some fix that would make things less difficult; the reality of PDD is I ve got it and will probably have it for a good portion of the rest of my life and it s not so much about fixing as coping now. 3 Message from Pastor Dustin Schellenberg And in the normal times that s fine and I cope, and life carries on, but in the stress and frustration and loss and unexpected costs that life and ministry often throw at me I really wish there was something more.the death of this young pastor has really shaken me particularly because I have been struggling lately and it has me questioning how long I can cope when this guy who had a lot going for him couldn t. I don t want to get to the place where I too unable to make it to tomorrow. A lot of advice going around in the wake of this death revolves around talking about it and working with people and taking time and putting energy into caring for yourself and I love the idea of all that but the reality of it seems questionable. We live in a disposable society and when things are broken we replace them, and the church shouldn t be like that, but I ve sat in annual meetings in various churches and organizations and heard the concern over the budget and wages and how expensive everything is and how we have to make sure we are getting enough for our money. And the voice of depression whispers how long will it take before they want to replace that kind of-broken person who needs more time and is less available than someone without depression or you aren t worth the money, you were never good enough, you don t deserve a good job like this. This is the voice that makes most of us terrified to admit we suffer. because we don t want to lose this thing we love. It s frightening thinking that this thing we can t help might interfere with the calling we feel and the hope we feel when we serve. Pastor, to me, is the thing I have been called to and I deeply love the church. Serving it in this capacity is by far the job I ve loved more than anything else and though it causes me stress, losing it would be more painful than having it. Leaving this calling would feel like letting the depression win and giving in to the disease rather than coping and working with it and that loss would be profound. Many people who suffer traumatic injury and struggle to go back to the jobs they love feel the se way. Because I have experienced this I have become an advocate of making ways for people to do the things they love even if those things are going to be hard. But it is hard, and for anyone who struggles with mental health we don t know how hard a day will be until the moment. One of the few things the church has offered those struggling with mental health is saying just give it to God. And to that answer I ask: did this pastor from California not do that? I listened to one of the last sermons he preached, the one right after returning from mental health sabbatical, and in it he says the se thing and how did that work out for him? I wish I had the answer but God, I don t What I do know though is I m not alone and neither are you. The greatest gift God gave the church is community with each other and the Spirit and that is perhaps the greatest gift we can offer those struggling with mental health. No judgement, no pat answers, open community that makes a place for them. A place you can find a little rest or talk about your pain and have people who will cry with you. A place that will not just let you serve but encourage you to and let you experience the joy of doing something good even when you feel very far from good.
