5 STUDY BEGINNING JUNE 2018 What images come to mind when you hear the word rescue? Do you think of police officers or firefighters acting courageously to save the lives of those in danger? 7 STUDY BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 2018 Leaders often find themselves in the role of communicating correction and counsel to those for whom they are accountable. The effectiveness of such instruction can often depend on one s integrity and the relationship between the leader and those in need of the correction and counsel. The Apostle Paul found himself in such a situation with a church he had planted in Corinth, one of the most wicked cities of the ancient world. In the middle of this Pagan environment, these new church members struggled with breaking the habits of their former lifestyles. Paul provided them with needed correction and counsel through the two letters we know as 1 and 2 Corinthians. He called them out for sinful practices, provided instruction regarding marriage, generosity, spiritual gifts, and church conflict, and wrote with eloquence regarding the true meaning of love. 9 STUDY BEGINNING DECEMBER 2018 Which do you prefer, grace or truth? Perhaps your answer depends on whether you are the dispenser or the recipient. We usually don t mind dispensing truth, especially difficult truth, but we may not be as eager to receive it. On the other hand, most everyone enjoys receiving grace (unmerited favor from others), though we might find it hard to extend such consideration to our neighbors, coworkers, friends, or family. The Apostle John tells us in his Gospel that Jesus was full of grace and truth (John 1:14). Jesus was the perfect embodiment of these two attributes. He always spoke the truth (about himself, his mission, and our needs), and he always demonstrated grace as he served others and eventually sacrificed his life to redeem us. The Gospel of John is full of stories which illustrate Jesus grace and truth from his conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well (John 4) to his modeling of servanthood in John 13. 12 CONNECT 360 BIBLE STUDY LIBRARY CALLED TO SERVE BIBLE THEME We love to receive excellent service from others, but how eager are we to provide excellent service for others? All Christ-followers have been called to a life of service. But this call runs counter to our culture that celebrates self-fulfillment, selfexpression, and self-achievement above all else. Will we choose to follow Jesus example? GOING VIRAL ACTS Often when something goes viral through a video, website or idea it greatly impacts people s lives as it gains national or international notoriety. This is exactly the story we see in the Book of Acts. Shortly after the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, the Holy Spirit arrived and ignited a gospel revolution at Pentecost. The gospel began to impact people s lives in incredible ways as once fearful disciples became bold witnesses, and an archenemy of the church became its greatest missionary.

13 GSI: GOSPEL STORY INVESTIGATOR LUKE Crime scene investigators (or forensic scientists), carefully collect, preserve, and identify evidence that can explain, solve, and prevent crimes. These skilled professionals write detailed reports about their discoveries and often provide expert testimony in criminal trials. In a similar manner, Luke serves as a Gospel story investigator through his account of the life and ministry of Jesus. He wanted to present the facts about Jesus so that people would place their faith in the Messiah. CHARACTER AND THE CROWN 1 SAMUEL What do people look for in their leaders? Physical attributes? Educational credentials? Oratory skills? Experience? Courage? How often is character a consideration? Our culture tends to confuse character with celebrity. But what kind of leaders is God looking for? The Book of 1 Samuel reveals a wide range of character qualities in its featured personalities as Israel moved from a theocracy to a monarchy. Consider the Lord s reminder to Samuel when he was seeking Saul s replacement. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7)

14 JESUS: KING OR CONCIERGE? MATTHEW The term concierge usually refers to an attendant or a caretaker. Unfortunately, people often treat Jesus as their personal concierge. They view him as someone who is only wanted around when there is a problem to be solved or a need to be met. The Gospel of Matthew declares that Jesus Christ is not a concierge but a King who deserves our loyalty and obedience. This study of the Gospel of Matthew will re-awaken us to the majesty of King Jesus and challenge us to submit ourselves to him. CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES JOSHUA/JUDGES The Books of Joshua and Judges are full of stories illustrating how choices inevitably lead to consequences. There are stories of courageous faith and miraculous victories as well as stories of deception and rebellion that spiraled into defeat and chaos. In these six lessons from Joshua and seven lessons from Judges we will encounter heroes and heroines (some expected and some unexpected) as well as examples revealing what can happen when God is ignored and people choose to do as they see fit. FAITH > FEAR BIBLE THEME Fear can wreak havoc in our lives. It can be the source of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual pain that shortens lives and robs people of joy. This type of debilitating fear first revealed itself in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve chose to sin and then later tried to hide from God to cover their shame. We have been living with fear (and in fear) ever since. Fortunately, we have a Savior who is well aware of our propensity to fear, and is the one in whom we can find faith that is greater than our fears.

15 TERROR & TRIUMPH REVELATION The God of the Book of Revelation is a God who inspires awe. If you need encouragement, hope, and strength for dealing with difficult circumstances; that is what you will find in the Book of Revelation. In vivid pictures, this book reminds us that God will overcome everything that opposes God and threatens his people. ON YOUR MARK: THE GOSPEL IN MOTION MARK The Gospel of Mark is an action-packed story of the ministry of Jesus. The Gospel covers the three-and-one-half years of Jesus public ministry and reveals him as both a miracle worker and a supernatural servant. He is constantly on the move preaching, teaching, healing, and preparing his disciples to carry the gospel forward following his death and resurrection. POWER & PURPOSE: GOD UNVEILS THE UNIVERSE GENESIS 1-11 God has revealed himself as the Creator of the universe, whose powerful words brought forth everything that has ever been created. In the first eleven chapters of Genesis we see history on a universal scale. We learn about the beginnings of the earth, the plants and animals, and the crowning achievement of God s creation: human beings. We also discover how sin enters the world and the devastating effects it has on everything and everyone God created. Fortunately, we also recognize God purposely reaching out to fallen humanity to provide a path to redemption through his covenantal love.
