Literacy & Evangelism International
THE MISSION Literacy & Evangelism International (LEI) equips the Church to share the message of Jesus Christ through the gift of reading. THE STRATEGY We develop Bible-content materials to teach basic reading in local languages and conversational English. We train church leaders and missionaries to use LEI materials for evangelism, discipleship, and church planting. We develop partnerships that expand the mission of LEI Annual Report 1
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Sid Rice Dear LEI Shareholders: The Psalmist reflects on the source of our strength when he writes, Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. Psalm 84:5 ESV As believers we are blessed with God s strength even as our hearts have become highways to heaven. At Literacy and Evangelism International (LEI) our strength has always been found in God. And the very hearts of those who are called to the mission have become highways for others to find Christ. This past year we have continued to enter into a unique rhythm of his grace, a highway focused on literacy mission. We have done this by creating Bible-content curriculum, training up new literacy champions, and partnering with those who share our mission and vision. Our missionaries crafted primers (new readers) in Arabic, Gonja and German that are becoming highways or pathways to new life in Christ. Our International Literacy Training Institute in North America and Teacher Training Workshops around the globe have provided paths to hope for new readers. Our expanding partnerships have provided paths to God s grace in countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Ghana, and dozens more. Our rhythm of grace is uniquely focused, and we are forever grateful for your support of the rhythm of God s grace at LEI. Thank you so much for your continued partnership with us! We are so blessed to have such a community of support surrounding us. We could not do this without you. Always your grateful brother in Christ, 2 Literacy & Evangelism International
LEI WORLDWIDE IMPACT: NEW BIBLE READERS Peru Jerry and Kathy Manus, LEI Missionaries in Peru, trained Urarina missionaries to reach out to their own people. Originally unwelcome when they came to plant a church in an Urarina village, the missionaries offered to teach the people to read and write. This offer of literacy opened doors for the Gospel, discipleship, and worship. When Kathy and Jerry visited the village, they saw people with their Bibles at meetings, reading them in their houses, and carrying them around in the village. The atmosphere in the village has changed. Drunkenness and angry raised voices, common in Urarina villages, are gone, evidence that the Good News of Jesus Christ is changing the lives of the people of Nuevo Peru. Burundi Martin Ntahonkiriye, LEI Missionary in Burundi, gave Bibles to 696 new Bible readers during literacy program graduation ceremonies last year. The poor, many of them widows and orphans, are greatly affected by war and the political turmoil of the country. They do not have the money to buy their own Bibles. Because of LEI workers in their midst, mothers who were unable to read the Word of God can now read and even teach others to read and write Annual Report 3
FINISHING STRONG RALPH AND JEAN HORD, LEI Assistant to the Director and Senior Publications Editor, respectively, were honored at a retirement luncheon for their 20 years of volunteer service. Coming to LEI in 1995, their plan was to serve for one year. Now, 20 years later, we celebrated their lengthy list of accomplishments, thanking the Lord for the many skills they shared and the blessings of their friendship. RUTH DYSON, the dearly loved wife of Dr. Albert Dyson, passed to glory March 18, Mrs. Dyson served with her husband on the mission fields of Nigeria and Sierra Leone, Africa, from While there, the Dysons were literacy champions, training teachers and doing literacy work that spanned the continent. After retirement Dr. and Mrs. Dyson continued to serve the Lord in the U.S., Africa, and Nepal facilitating classes at LEI s International Literacy Training Institutes. Through her Godly example, intercessory prayer, encouragement, and loving kindness, Mrs. Dyson impacted many lives. Our prayers and sympathies go out to Dr. Dyson and his family. Ruth Dyson, the loving servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, will be dearly missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. 4 Literacy & Evangelism International

DR. JAMES KIGAMWA gives a concise explanation. LEI s primers are: * Culture-specific (Individually crafted, original writing, not translated) * Consistent in lesson format * Written by speakers of the language * Illustrated by a local artist * Designed to be taught by non-professional volunteers * Accompanied by a detailed teachers guidebook 6 Literacy & Evangelism Inter n at i on a l
ARABIC PRIMER Egypt JAMES KIGAMWA, LEI Primer Construction Consultant, and his Arabic primer construction team have been busy crafting a primer to be used by local churches in Egypt to teach adult members how to read and write. With this literacy training, church members will be able to read the Bible for themselves. GONJA PRIMER Ghana, Africa SAMUEL LAWERTEH and his Gonja primer construction team completed all 72 lessons for their primer in a 12-day primer construction event. After a final edit and printing, the next step will be to train Ghanaian literacy champions to use these newlycreated Gonja literacy materials. We look forward to hearing the good news of new Bible readers who will learn through the Ghana team s efforts. GERMAN PRIMER Germany GEORG & MARTHA ORT & BOB BIEDERMAN went to Germany to lead a primer construction team. In Durchblick s 60 lessons, new letters and vocabulary are carefully controlled and systematically introduced for a student s quick progress. Each lesson contains a Scripture verse for the tutor, and later the student, to read. In Lesson 12 the name of Jesus is introduced and a story about Jesus is shared in every subsequent lesson. The last 26 lessons of the primer are simplified Bible passages. By the time non-christians have completed the German primer, they will have a thorough presentation of the Gospel message. LEI s literacy materials are invaluable tools to use with the huge refugee influx worldwide Annual Report 7

INTERNATIONAL LITERACY TRAINING INSTITUTE ILTI 2015 Ten Christian leaders from six countries gathered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this past summer for the 35th Annual International Literacy Training Institute (ILTI). Directed by BOB BIEDERMAN, this six-week intensive training experience offered the best in literacy and ESL methods and materials. Participants studied Evangelism, Primer Construction and Use, Project Management, and Leadership. Though the coursework was intense, participants also enjoyed worship, prayer, Bible study and fellowship in a loving multi-cultural setting. You can apply to attend this yearly event through the LEI website <LiteracyEvangelism.org/ILTI>. 10 Literacy & Evangelism International
ILTI IMPACT Our ILTI graduates go into the world and share the Gospel and the literacy tools they have received. Here is a sample of the worldwide ILTI impact. Uganda CAROLYN JONES, (ILTI 2013) KEITH JONES, and their Ugandan primer construction team created the Lango primer in This past June, they celebrated the graduation of 55 new readers and the work of 16 teachers all of whom received certificates and Bibles in their native languages. These successful graduates and teachers are unique in that they were all incarcerated inmates detained in Ugandan prisons. A positive unexpected side effect of the literacy classes was a change in the prison s atmosphere. Inmate students and teachers of the reading program began leading church services, singing hymns, reading and teaching from the Bible to the captive audience, for hours. Five of these inmates, the reading program s teachers, have been recently exonerated: all charges dropped. These former inmates plan to return to their communities to use the skills they now have, to draw their people out of illiteracy and poverty. The Lord works in mysterious ways. Lives are being transformed, creating something good out of a bad situation. We praise the Lord for all that is being accomplished through literacy missionaries in Uganda.
