Mission and Strategy of Church of the Highlands Church of the Highlands exists to Reach Our Community, America, and the World for Jesus Christ. Highlands has a (3) step process that offers a strategic pathway towards discipleship Come 2. Learn 3. Commit 1. Come The Sunday morning gathering with Church of the Highlands is the front door to everything we do as a ministry. 2. Learn Starting Point is the first step in learning how Highlands plans to partner with you in your journey with Christ and help you get plugged in and connected. 3. Commit via Joining Highlands Partnership with Church of the Highlands is a commitment to having participation in our mission, unity in our essential beliefs, liberty in our non-essential beliefs and humility in all of our beliefs. Sunday Morning Worship: Our Sunday worship services are the front door to Church of the Highlands. Here, we create an inviting atmosphere to Worship Jesus 2. Proclaim the Gospel 3. Provide Next Steps for Discipleship Starting Point: This is the very next step to getting plugged into the life of Church of the Highlands. Starting Point is broken up into (3) weeks that explain who Highlands is and how to partner together with the local church to walk with Jesus, multiply disciples and reach people. The three weeks are broken up by the following topics Connect: What does it mean to be connected at Church of the Highlands? 2. Contribute: How do we contribute to the efforts at Church of the Highlands? Starting Point Connect Page 2 6

3. Commit: What does it mean to be committed at Church of the Highlands? Theological Convictions of Church of the Highlands At Highlands, we resolve to be theologically deep yet intentionally practical. We do this by straight up preaching the Bible while giving practical points of application in all sermons, Community Groups, and Bible studies. Highlands is committed to never elevating a person s conscience to the place of biblical doctrine. The gospel doesn t allow us to use our conscience as a means of righteousness since righteousness is obtained by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. 1. Authority of Scripture. The Bible is God's Word to all people without any mixture of error and is completely relevant to our daily lives. We believe the bible is ultimate authority, God breathed and the story of Gods redemptive plan through Jesus Christ. (Psalm 19:7-11; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21). 2. Exclusivity of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ provides the "only way" of salvation, which is a gift from God and it cannot be earned through our own efforts nor taken away because of our behavior. Jesus physically died, was buried, and literally rose three days later. This gospel of Christ is the foundation for salvation and sanctification. Only through faith in Christ and repentance from sin can one be reconciled to God. (John 3:18, 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:21-26; 1 Timothy 2:5-6) 3. Sinful Nature We believe that humanity is created in the image of God. Through the fall of Adam and Eve, all were separated from God and now inherit a sin nature. We are sinful by our motives, words and deeds; therefore dead in our sins until we are born again by the Spirit. (Genesis 6:5; Psalm 51:5; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 3:23; 5:8, 12-21; 7:18; Ephesians 2:1-3). 4. Literal Heaven and Hell Scripture teaches that there will be a future physical resurrection of the dead. Heaven and Hell are literal places of eternal existence. To be eternally separated from God is hell but to be eternally united with Christ, is heaven. Only those who turn from sin and to Jesus in faith and repentance will be eternally united with Christ. Those who do not turn from sin and to Jesus will be eternally separated from Christ. (Matthew 25:31-46; John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15) 5. Gender Distinction Men and women are absolutely equal in dignity, value and worth but are different by divine design. We see the scripture as teaching that God holds the man responsible for sacrificially serving and leading within the church and home. We believe that gender differences are meant to complement one another, not divide each other. Therefore, we celebrate the equality of men and women yet the distinction of how we are designed to work together. (1 Starting Point Connect Page 3 6

Corinthians 11:2-16; 14:33-35; Ephesians 5:22-33; Colossians 3:18-19; 1 Timothy 2:8-15; 1 Peter 3:1-7) Core Values of Church of the Highlands We Are All About Jesus who is Revealed in His Perfect Word We keep the main thing the main thing. We Are Simple Simplicity enables excellence. Instead of having a lot of ministries that we do in a mediocre manner, we will cull the ministries we have in order to increase excellence and trim the fat. We Lead the Way in Generosity Giving is a big deal at our church. We go above and beyond to give sacrificially to the work of God. We Never Assume There is a Box Some try to think outside the box, but we never assume there is a box. Creativity is key to us fulfilling our mission. We Make Each Other Laugh The joy of the Lord is our strength, and our church is a place that is fun. We Are Spiritual Contributors, Not Spiritual Consumers We will not cater to your personal preference to fulfill our mission. We are more concerned with the people we are trying to reach than the people we are trying to keep. We Are United Under One Vision We are built on the vision God gave our church. We will aggressively defend our unity and that vision. We Are Known for What We Are For We will speak vision and life over our people. We will lift up the salvation of Jesus rather than using our platform to condemn. We Act in Audacious Faith In order to fulfill our mission, we can t think small. We will set impossible goals, take bold steps, and watch God move. The Church The Church is a community of believers unified by their faith in Christ. The Church is not a country club or show that we attend. The Foundation of Biblical Community 1. Repentance Repentance is a directional change in which we turn toward Jesus. Repentance is not regret, disappointment or verbal confession. 2. Fellowship Fellowship is a directional change in which we turn toward God's family. Starting Point Connect Page 4 6

Fellowship is marked by a unity that is greater than our difference. Fellowship is not marked by social interests or comfort. 5 Characteristics of Biblical Community ñ Biblical Community is seen when you spend time praying together. ñ Biblical Community is experienced when there is the humility to learn from each other. ñ Biblical Community is demonstrated when you live through difficulties with one another. ñ Biblical Community is extended when you open your heart & home to others. ñ Biblical Community is identified when it is advancing the Gospel. The Example of Biblical Community The New Testament never calls a believer friend, but continually calls us brothers or sisters. The church should resemble a family that confesses sin, repents of sin and rebukes sin. For they were saying, He has an unclean spirit. And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you. And he answered them, Who are my mother and my brothers? For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother. Highlands' Strategy for Biblical Community Biblical Community is Highlands' primary strategy for multiplying committed disciples. Therefore, Highlands has established Community Groups to help cultivate Biblical Community. Highlands Community Groups Community Groups are small gatherings to develop authentic community with other believers through Bible study and building relationships. Criteria for Community Groups Community Groups meet weekly. Starting Point Connect Page 5 6

Community Groups have a goal of Bible study & relationships. Community Groups are committed to Gospel-Centrality and openness. The Reality of Community Groups Community Groups are a step towards biblical community, but they do not automatically result in biblical community. Community Groups can be messy, uncomfortable and inconvenient, and that s good. Community Groups will push you and strengthen you if they are done correctly. Community Groups take time to establish Biblical Community. See the next page, that lists all of the Community Groups we offer, and determine which one you will attend in the near future. 8 The Bible teaches that every believer in Christ is called to contribute. Three Areas of Commitment TIME 1. Sunday Gathering 2. Community Groups 3. Special Events 4. Outreach Emphases 5. Learning Environments TALENT 1. Heart 2. Abilities 3. Passions 4. Experiences TREASURE How should we be generous? 1. Biblically 2. Cheerfully 3. Consistently Sign up for automated giving at TheHighlands.cc/Giving 1. Discovering your Spiritual Gifts Spiritual gifts are supernaturally given by the Holy Spirit to every believer when they accept Christ as their Lord and Savior and they re to be used to build the body of Christ. Spiritual Gifts Are Not: Gifts are not to be confused with natural abilities or passions. Gifts are not to be confused with the Fruit of the Spirit. Gifts are not titles or accolades. Gifts are not for my benefit, but for the benefit of others. Five Truths about Spiritual Gifts: 1. Only Christ followers have spiritual gifts. 2. Every Christian has at least one spiritual gift. 3. No one receives all of the gifts. 4. The Holy Spirit decides what gifts I get. 5. I am to exercise the gifts God gives me. 2. Discovering Your Heart Your heart represents the source of all your motivations. Your heart reveals the real you; the good, the bad, the ugly. Your heart determines why you say the things you do, why you feel the way you do and why Starting Point Contribute Page 2 9

you act the way you do. 3. Discovering Your Natural Abilities Most people have hundreds of abilities. Most Christians do not leverage enough of their natural talents and abilities. You may be completely unaware of the abilities you possess. What are some things that you believe you are good at doing? 4. Discovering Your Personality Webster defines personality as the complex of characteristics that distinguish an individual. These characteristics affect how we think, feel, act, make decisions, expressing feelings, etc. Psalm 139:13-15 says...for you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 5. Discovering Your Experiences There are tons of experiences that we have all gone through in our lives, but often times we fail to realize that in order to correctly be positioned for the future, we have to be willing to look backwards to our past. Acts 17:24-27 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us. 1. Family experiences 2. Friend experiences 3. Work experiences 4. Spiritual experiences 5. Ministry experiences Starting Point Contribute Page 3 9

Now What? Being generous with your SHAPE is the secret of both fruitfulness and fulfillment in ministry. Why I should be generous with my SHAPE? 1. To be generous is to be like Jesus. John 3:16 God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. 2. To be generous is to align my heart correctly. Matthew 6:21 where your treasure is, there your heart is also. 3. To be generous is to fight against pride. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to be generous and willing to share. In this way they may take hold of the life that is truly life! 4. To be generous is to strengthen my walk. Proverbs 3:5, 9 Trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Honor the lord by giving him the first part of your income, and he will fill your barns to overflowing. 5. To be generous is to open up opportunities for God to bless me in return. Proverbs 22:9 A generous man himself will be blessed. Starting Point Contribute Page 4 9

History Church of the Highlands is a church re-plant out of the former Highland Park Baptist Church near downtown Chattanooga. A re-plant is when an existing church shuts down and starts over as a new ministry. Highland Park Baptist was an historic church, founded in 1890, that used to average as many as 10,000 people, and according to Dr. Elmer Towns book, America s Ten Largest Churches, Highland Park was the second-largest church in America in The church started many wonderful ministries: Tennessee Temple schools educated people from Kindergarten through PhD, WDYN radio was the most wide-reaching station in the south, it began a homeless ministry that served many in the community, and the church began a camp, Camp Joy, in Harrison, TN to share the Gospel with kids. The 65 acres for the camp were purchased for $3,000 in the 1940s. Despite all of these wonderful truths from the church s past, unfortunately, the church saw a precipitous decline from the early 1980s through By the time Dr. Jeremy Roberts became pastor of the church April 1, 2012, the church had dwindled down to 120 people, and had $3.1 million of debt. The congregation s average age was 65 (including children), there were two babies in the nursery, and two teens in the student ministry. Pastor Jeremy knew something drastic had to change. He and his wife, Charity, went to Gatlinburg, TN for a time of prayer about the church s future, and on the way back to Chattanooga, they exited in Ooltewah, drove to Camp Joy, Jeremy went to the peak of the property that overlooked the lake, fervently prayed, and it was at that moment that Church of the Highlands was birthed in our pastor s heart. After meeting with the leadership of the church, it was unanimously decided that Highland Park would re-plant as a new church at the former campsite, and start a work focused on reaching the unchurched and de-churched. At that time, the remodeling of the former camp went underway. The Olympic-sized swimming pool was refurbished, the barn was fixed-up, a skatepark was constructed, the existing buildings were completely remodeled, and the Dream Center was built in cash (opened in June of 2014). Since the church s re-planting took place January 20, 2013, Church of the Highlands has tripled in size, baptized over 100 people, sold seven of the eight buildings in the Highland Park community, become debt free, and we have a bright future in Christ. Vision Our church is not about buildings. We re all about reaching people for Jesus. Due to the growth of Church of the Highlands, if we do not build a new facility, our growth will be stunted. You can see flip over a few pages to view the master plan of our 65-acre campus. The vision is to build a worship center, large lobby, café, and preschool/children s space in a new Starting Point Commit Page 2 5

building on the Highway 58 side of our campus. The entrance will be directly across the street from Island Cove Marina. The facility will be beautiful and welcoming, but will not waste money by being opulent. The Worship Center will feature a large glass wall overlooking Harrison Bay. Detailed plans for this vision were given to the church January 26, Since then, tons of families in our church have equally sacrificed together to see Greater Things for the generations to come at Church of the Highlands. You are encouraged to pray about giving over and above your tithe to the building fund, too. Simple Strategy Reach 1. Minister to the un-churched and de-churched 2.
