Dr. Bob Hopper 01 Course Purpose To equip and empower current elders and those who may be elected to the office of elder. The goal isfor all elders to be or become biblically-based, effective servantleaders in the local church family to the end that God is glorified, the local church is blessed, and the EPC is strengthened. 02 Course Resources 1. 2 Course Format 1. Eight weeks/lessons 2. Teaching time (45 minutes) 3. The eight lesson are organized around the eleven officer ordination vows of the EPC 4. 3 A. Who Is Jesus Christ? "In his eternal purpose it pleased God to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus, his only begotten Son, to be the mediator between God and man. Jesus is the prophet. priest. and king, the head and savior of his church, the heir of all things, and judge of the world... (WCF, Chapter 8.1) 07 The Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, is truly the eternal God, of one substance and equal with the Father. In the fullness of time he took on himself the nature of man, with all the essential qualities and ordinary frailties of manexcept that he was sinless.jesuswas conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary out of her substance... The person Jesusis truly God and truly man, yet one Christ. the only mediator between God and man. (WCF, chapter 8.3 ) By his perfect obedience and sacrifice, offered up to God once and for all... The Lord Jesus has completely satisfied the justice of his Father and purchased not only reconciliation but also an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven for everyone who the Father has given to him." 7 D. "Personal Lord and Savior"? Note: EPC Church Membership Vows #1 and #2. (BOG, p. 19) Vow #1: Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinnersin the sight of God and without hope for your salvation except in Hissovereign mercy? Vow #2: Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the Savior of sinners, and do you receive and depend upon Him alone for your salvation as He isoffered in the Gospel? E. Faith-Based Character Why is "faith-based character" the basic requirement of an EPC church officer? 1. Acts 6: Timothy 3: Titus 1:5-9 E. "Faith-based character" "... It is the first duty of the Ruling Elder to represent the mind of Christ, as that person understands it, in the various courts of Hie church." "The life of the Ruling Elder: According to Scripture, those who bear this office should exhibit... Being blameless in life, sound in the faith, wise in the things of God, and discreet in all things." (BOG, 10-4,5) 021

"Faith-based character" "The life of the Deacon: According to Scripture, those who bear this office should exhibit especially those spiritual qualities of the Christian, and should be devout and wholehearted followers of Christ. They should be persons who are steady and reliable, well thought of by all. They should not be new in the faith and should be tested for faithfulness before election." (BOG,10-8) (see 1Timothy 3:8-13) E. Faith-based character Common unbiblical officer selection practices: they have served before they are successful business leaders so they would be good leaders in church we have a slot to fill and someone has to fill it they are well-liked in our congregation they seem to get along well with others "they chose...
