1 Ministry of Abundant Life OCTOBER AUGUST 2012 ANGLICAN CHURCH OF KENYA DIRECTORATE OF SOCIAL SERVICES ISSUE IN THIS ISSUE Briefs- 2 Leading In Mission 3 Changing Our Brand 4 Rebranding Chronology-5 Rebranding Pictorial-6 WHO WE ARE: Anglican Church of Kenya, Directorate Of Social Services (ACK DOSS). WHAT WE DO: ACK DOSS is the National-level organ set up with the purpose of spearheading ACK development issues and positive social transformation. OUR AREAS: Advocacy. Gender, Health and HIV/AIDS. Disaster Management and Mitigation. IT, Research & Sustainability. Capacity Building. Documentation FEEDBACK: news@ackenya.org EDITORIAL The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) development initiatives started and gained momentum with the establishment of mission stations in the country dating back to1844. The ACK started promoting education while at the same time carrying out advocacy work. More than spiritual nourishment, the people needed wholesome development. The activities have increased and the geographic boundaries widened covering the country through nine development regions. Through the years the scope of social work and context has evolved. DOSS has made a bold process to revisit its identity and re strategize the approaches to remain relevant and meet the needs at hand. The trigger to this was from the planned September 2011 consultative meeting in Nakuru, at which ACK Directorate of Social Services committed to engaging in a review and rebranding process to bring about the desired change. This e newsletter reviews the progress made so far. Joyce Mwangi Cover Photo: The first Consultation meeting on Rebranding.
2 BRIEFS Donation Archbishop Eliud Wabukala joined Rev. Phillip Makokha at to donate food items for school feedimng programme. Maize, rice, and green grams for school feeding programme were donated to two primary schools, ACK Emmanuel Silanga and ACK Holy Trinity in Kibera. Many children go home for lunch only to find locked doors or nothing to eat thus affecting performance, says Evelyne the head teacher of ACK St. Emmanuel School Silanga. A research done in some of the primary schools reveal that some students from poor families are motivated to attend school by the lunch rations, probably the only meal for the day. The objectives of this program are to improve the children s nutrition and to increase attendance, reduce dropout rates and improve overall academic performance. The donation will benefit over 300 children. The food stuff was donated by the Anglican Church on the Hill Canada through the Vine Foundation Kenya. New Bishop Elected The Venerable Joseph Kibuchua has been elected the new Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kirinyaga in a peaceful process held on Friday, 12 th October Ven. Kibuchua will succeed Bishop Daniel Munene Ngoru who is retiring at the end of the year after serving for 15 years. Archdeacon Kibuchua has been the Provost of ACK St. Thomas Cathedral and also served as the development coordinator in the diocese. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Theology Degree and a Masters Degree in Conflict Resolution. He is married and blessed with two children. Other aspirants were Rev. Benson Kimaru and Rev. Samson Mwendia. The electoral college of 23 members participated in the elections. The enthronement and consecration service of the new Bishop will take place on 9 th December, 2012 at St. Thomas Cathedral in Kerugoya. Dedicated for Service Archbishop Eliud Wabukala chats with the Directorate of Social Services Mr.Eliud Njeru during the dedication of the 10,000 litres water truck. The truck which was donated to the Directorate of Social Services by Australian Aid will be used for relief services during drought situations and other related interventions. The erratic weather patterns have affected food production in many parts of the country. Water catchment has also been minimal due to the unpredictable rainfall pattern thus the need for supplementary water provision for basic household consumption. This is a mitigation measure especially to reduce vulnerability of pastoralist communities in arid and semi arid areas. 2
3 Leading in Mission It was my privilege to be present with Archbishop Wabukala as he chaired the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (GFCA) Primates Council, October, in Dar es Salaam. We were welcomed by the Primate of Tanzania, the Most Revd Valentino Mokiwa, who is also a member of the Council. Here I was able to see at first hand the strategic role our Archbishop has been called to fulfil in the renewal and reform of the Anglican Communion. In June 2008, 1,200 delegates representing the majority of practising Anglicans around the world came together in response to a spiritual crisis and held the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) in Jerusalem. The GAFCON movement affirmed the Jerusalem Statement and Declaration as a basis for a clear witness to the biblical gospel and called on the Primates present to form a Council. It formed a fellowship, the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (GFCA), and committed to supporting the Anglicans who had been forced out of their spiritual homes by church leaders who had denied the orthodox faith, either in word or deed. We believe the doctrinal foundation of Anglicanism which defines our core identity is expressed in the words that the doctrine of the church is grounded in the Holy scriptures, and in particular such doctrine is to be found in the thirty-nine articles of religion, the book of common prayer and the ordinal, notes GAFCON Statement 2008 Sadly, the response to GAFCON by the Western leadership of the Communion has been to systematically use its ample financial resources to focus on dialogue the so called listening process or continuing indaba and issues of aid and economic empowerment without any clear biblical framework. This means that the work of the GFCA and its Primates Council continues to be vital for the future. At Dar es Salaam, it was agreed that GAFCON 2 in 2013 would take as its theme the declaration of the gospel In the midst of much conflict (1 Thessalonians 2:2).This is a global reality for many, where the church and her leadership seeks to promote biblical values amidst a secular culture. The conflict we are in is not of course a struggle against flesh and blood. It is a spiritual battle for which the church needs to be equipped by faithful teaching which nourishes the soul and fortifies the mind, so it was therefore very encouraging that the Primates reaffirmed their commitment to resource the GFCA through a Theological Commission. There is a growing appreciation of the GFCA s vision for our Anglican future. At Dar es Salaam, the Most Reverend Henri Isingoma, Primate of the Anglican Church of the Congo, was welcomed as a member of the Primates Council and a new regional Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans is being formed in Australia. The Council meeting closed with a service of Holy Communion in St. Alban s Cathedral and it was very encouraging to see how strongly the congregation expressed their desire to stand with the GAFCON movement. Many commentators have noted that the centre of gravity of global Christianity is now to be found in Africa. The Anglican Church of Kenya supports the quality of discipleship and witness matters as never before. 4 Changing Our Brand The social transformation work of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) is in the process of rebranding from Christian Community Services (CCS) to Anglican Development Services, Kenya (ADSK). The progress has been documented in the previous monthly journals. A number of consultations, workshops and meetings have been held to this effect to constantly work with the stakeholders on this important phase. The following have been proposed as some of the guidelines that have been formulated to form the basis of the structures for the new brand ADSK. ADSK IDENTITY: An Anglican Church of Kenya institution that is tasked with the responsibility of leading the social ministry of the Church ADSK VISION: Sustainable organisation working with communities that live godly and dignified lives ADSK MANDATE: To proclaim the Good News of Christ through social ministry of the Anglican Church of Kenya ADSK CORE VALUES: GODLINESS - Honoring God in our work as guided by the Holy Bible LOVE - Serving with compassion, love, humility and upholding human dignity PROFESSIONALISM - Committed to professionalism and efficiency in our service INTEGRITY - Ensuring integrity and honesty in all our undertakings STEWARDSHIP - Committed to accountability, transparency and good stewardship in utilization of God-given resources including preservation of the environment JUSTICE - Ensuring justice, inclusiveness and equity in sharing of resources and opportunities PARTICIPATION - Committed to teamwork and participation in our service INNOVATION To encourage creativity As yet, much has been done and to create awareness and enable stakeholders understand the need to change as the church fulfills her integral mission. The Chairman of Board of Social Services Bishop Jackson Ole Sapit noted that ADS Brand consultation at various levels was necessary to enable the key actors in Social Development in the ACK to review work done so far and brainstorm on how initiatives can be done differently given the changes taking place in the operating environment. "We must be people on a pilgrimage; we mustn't be satisfied with the status quo; we must move on to discover the character of the God who enables; and we must be committed to discovering new and creative ways of reaching out to the unreached. To this end we must be innovative and constantly search for ways of improving the quality, relevance and effectiveness of our service to humanity, remarked Dr. William Ogara during the brand strategy workshop.
