3 DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE It is time to trim the Advent Giving Tree. This year, our Cathedral parish will be providing gifts for residents at the Saint John Homeless Shelter and the Love Life Program (newborn children). Also, we have chosen a deserving family who could use some extra Christmas cheer. Please take an ornament or two off the Giving Tree that has a gift suggestion attached, purchase the gift and return it unwrapped with the tree ornament and place it under the tree. The Giving Tree will be in the Bishop Wycislo lobby through Sunday, December 23. If you have any questions, call Ken at Thank you and remember: Live the faith. FRIDAY ARTIST SERIES St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, 140 S. Monroe Ave., is having a Friday Artist Series during the month of December which is the season of Advent and Octave of Christmas. The concerts will take place on December 14, 21, and 28 from 12:15pm - 12:45pm in the Cathedral. The concerts will feature area organists, harpists and violinists. If you are in the area and are looking for a short respite from the hustle and bustle of the season, come and enjoy some beautiful Advent and Christmas music in a beautiful setting. PARISH OFFICE TO BE CLOSED Please note: The Cathedral Parish Office will be closed Monday and Tuesday, December 24 and 25 in observance of Christmas and again on Monday and Tuesday, December 31 and January 1 in observance of New Year s Day. Also, the church will be closed for those days except to open one hour before all Masses and then be closed immediately after the Masses. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Mary Jeziorny Robert & Della DeCleene YEAR OF FAITH Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, offers 10 Ways Catholics Can Live the Year of Faith. Rooted in guidelines from the Vatican s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, some of these suggestions are already requirements for Catholics; others can be embraced by Catholics at all times and especially during the Year of Faith. The sixth suggestion, of ten, for your meditation is: Study the Catechism. Published exactly 30 years after the start of the Council, the Catechism of the Catholic Church covers the beliefs, moral teachings, prayer and sacraments of the Catholic Church in one volume. It s a resource for growing in understanding of the faith. Another helpful resource is the U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults (USCCA). Relics for veneration this week are: St. Peter Fourier, feast day, December 9; St. Militiades, feast day, December 10; St. Lucy, feast day, December 13; St. John of the Cross, feast day, December 14. God sustains every soul and dwells in it substantially, even though it be that of the greatest sinner in the world, and this union is natural. The supernatural union exists when God s will and the soul s will are in conformity. Therefore the soul rests transformed in God through love. St. John of the Cross BANNS OF MARRIAGE III Jamie Stockwell and Jesse Scott Schnurer This couple wishes to be married at the Cathedral. If anyone is aware of any serious reason why this marriage should not take place, he or she has a moral obligation before God to make the pastor aware of these concerns. December 1st and 2nd, 2012 Sacrificial Giving..$ 9, Offertory Collection..$ Building and Maintenance $ Total $10, St. Vincent de Paul $ We need an average of $ from the weekly collection to meet our budget.

4 From Our Pastor My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During Advent, in the midst of all our spiritual preparations for the celebration of Christmas, we relax our penitential disciplines of prayer, fasting, and works of charity to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Every December 8th, we remember the Blessed Virgin Mary and call to mind her part in salvation history. First of all, Mary s Immaculate Conception is often confused with Jesus miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary. They are not the same thing! The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary herself being conceived without sin. Properly understood, we as Catholics believe that, From the first instant of Mary s conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ Mary was preserved immune from all stain of original sin. In other words, Mary was conceived in a normal way by her parents Sts. Anne and Joachim. However, by a special grace from God, she was kept free from the stain of original sin in order to be a most perfect mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. As a human being, Mary was subject to the stain of original sin and consequent actual sin in her life. However, since she had been chosen by God to give birth to His Son Jesus, it was necessary that she be preserved from the stain of original sin in order that she might be the very mother of the sinless Son of God. Put another way, Jesus looked just like his mother He gained His humanity through her. And this humanity had to be sinless because, as God, He has no sin. Thus, there could be no sin in either the Child or the Mother. Now, Jesus is sinless because He is God. Mary was sinless because God preserved her from sin in a unique way that anticipated the redemptive work of her Son. Jesus was His mother s savior, but in a way that preserved her from sin, rather than cleansing her from sin after she had fallen. In both ways Jesus is our savior, but in Mary s case, He saves her by preserving her from sin. On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, we recall the singular privilege by which God created the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the most perfect of all human persons, the Mother of God. Mary allowed herself to become the handmaiden of the Lord. by agreeing to bear life in her womb, the life of our Savior. Her willingness to bear that life made our deliverance from sin and death possible. This is why we as Catholics venerate Mary and hold her up as an example. We do not worship Mary to do so would be a serious sin. But we do look to her as an example of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Christians have believed in Mary s Immaculate Conception from the very beginning. It was not always understood as fully and completely as we understand it today, but it was always believed. When Pope Pius IX declared the Immaculate Conception to be a dogma of our Catholic Faith in 1854, it was merely a confirmation of what Christians had believed all along that Mary had no sin. The Lord of lords and the King of the Universe He who created every star and every speck of dust, choose to be contained completely and totally in the womb of a human being the Virgin Mary. What a great dignity we have as human beings, that God chose one of us to be His Mother! May God Bless You. Fr. Girotti FROM CATHEDRAL STAFF SEEK FIND LOVE: Small Groups are Coming!
