1 1. This was a very troubled time for the English people, and the writings displayed these troubles. 2. Lucifer was the Angel of light 3. According to Milton: Adam and Eve are the British people, for it is through them and not any reigning monrach that England will regain the "Paradise" they lost. 4. It can be interpreted that Milton's epic states that it was not God's fault that "Paradise" was lost, but it was the failure of the people to govern themselves according to the will of God that caused the fall. 5. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, because he was the most artistic of the group 6. Jefferson was a British national, a colonist of the Americas, thus this document is also considered a British document. 7. We do have certain unalienable rights given to us at birth, and we willingly relinquish those rights to a person/s who will represent our beliefs, values and morals (the opportunity to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness) when we vote. 8. Jefferson emphasized the contractual justification for independence, arguing that when the tyrannical government of King George III of England repeatedly violated "natural law, " the colonists had not only the right but the duty to revolt. 9. The Essay on Man is a clear affirmation of a Christian faith: even though life seems chaotic and patternless to man, man simply needs to remember that all events happen as part of God's divine plan. 10. Two things rule man in this Enlightenment age. Reason and Passion. Reason is the energy of the now based on emotions, while passion determines what is good for the future. Passion is the guide for reason, as it directs us. 11. An epic is a long narrative poem which celebrates the deeds of a hero, who is the epitome of a culture's values and morals, while he battles evil in the name of all that is good. 12. Your reading of Milton's tale speaks of Lucifer being called satan (Hebrew for advesary) and his second in command Beelzebub (Hebrew for lord of the flies). It also mentions his daughter, Sin & his son, Death. 13. Loosely speaking, John Milton is considered one of the best writers in English Literature, his style follows that of William Shakespeare who was inspired by the great works of Geoffrey Chaucer 14. Based on An Essay on Man: God allows evil to exist allowing mankind to define good and evil, so that with the God given right of free will mankind has the opportunity to choose right from wrong. 15. The literal tranlation for "Carpe diem" is to cease the day 1
