3 What do we learn about the Holy Spirit? Helper Greek: Paracletos Synonyms: Counselor, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor. Only used by John (here and in 1 John 2:1)

4 MacArthur: The Greek term here literally means one called alongside to help, and has the idea of someone who encourages and exhorts. Wiersbe: During His earthly ministry, Jesus had guided, guarded, and taught His disciples, but now He was going to leave them. The Spirit of God would come to them and dwell in them, taking the place of their Master.

5 Was the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament? Yes! He empowered believers. But He did not indwell them; He would empower them for an act or a time. 1 Samuel 16:14; 18:12; Psalm 51:11

16 So, what was He asking them to believe about Him? Facts about His character Facts about His actions over the years. So, to defeat being troubled, we are to ruminate on God s character, and concentrate our minds on the life and actions of Jesus

18 John 14:27: Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. -It is His peace; not a cheap trick -It is His will for us to experience peace - It is better than what the world gives as a remedy

19 God wants us to have peace[.] God s will for the Christian is to experience the legacy of peace that Christ left for his followers [citing John 14:26-27]. He wants us to experience tranquility, contentment, the absence of inner strife, and completeness[.] Inward peace of mind, plus fullness and abundance in life, is the will of God for Christians.
