1 Forgotten Harvest Serves Those Who Proudly Served Our Country Michigan Veterans Foundation Tyrone Chatman, Vietnam Veteran and Executive Director, Michigan Veterans Foundation, has led the Detroit Veterans Center for 11 years and paved the way for a relocation of the current facility to a new 42,000 square foot center that will offer Veteran services and house over 100 homeless Veterans. While 8% of the country s population represent those who have served our country, it is estimated that Veterans constitute 25-35% of the homeless population. Innovations at Forgotten Farms Innovations at Forgotten Harvest Farms along with the support of volunteers who recorded over 11,000 service hours in 2016 resulted in a harvest of over 600,000 pounds of nutrient-rich produce. Our new greenhouse allows us to harvest crops throughout the year. A vertical farming experiment was conducted last fall resulting in the harvest of cherry and grape tomato specialty crops of over 1,000 pounds. The winter kale crop planted last November is thriving this winter. The Veterans Support Center, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 The all-volunteer staff of the Veterans Support Center, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 offers Veterans support services ranging from food for veterans and their families, accredited Veteran s benefit counseling services and a Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial that honors the 2,654 Michigan servicemen and women killed in the war. WINTER ISSUE, 2017 Sustainable Farm Practices Our successful implementation of a cover crop system over the past two seasons has improved the Four Seasons Greenhouse soil health of the farm and reduced both irrigational needs and chemical herbicide applications. The system will be expanded to 11 more acres of land this year enriching our harvest of kale, cabbage and broccoli. Noon Chow Veterans are served three meals a day with food provided by Forgotten Harvest at the Detroit Veterans Center. Veterans housed at the center undergo an month program to help them return to society through professional guidance and Veteran-toVeteran reinforcement. Forgotten Harvest provided 65,438 pounds of nutritious food to the Michigan Veterans Foundation in HARVEST NEWS Four Season Farming Spring Rye Fields of rye were planted this fall.
