3 Chapter 15 Faith WHAT DOTH IT PROFIT, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? (James 2:14) The word faith is probably the most misunderstood word in the entire Bible. We must return to the original Greek word used in the ancient New Testament manuscripts to ascertain its correct meaning. The word faith was translated from the Greek word pistis meaning: faith, faithfulness, BELIEF, trust, with an implication that ACTIONS based on that trust may follow. Ah, so the original Greek word translated faith denoted an action based faith! Notice also faith means belief. Consequently, when you come across the word believe in the Bible, it is IDENTICAL in meaning to the word faith, for faith is believing! Therefore, the original Greek word translated believe in the Bible is pisteuō meaning: to believe, put one s FAITH in, trust, with an implication that ACTIONS based on that trust may follow. Do you see? The word faith is equal to the word believe ; and both words are based on actions (works). In other words, the Biblical terms faith and believe signify whatever we have faith in or believe in will CHANGE the way we live! 289

4 One day God furnished me with a wonderful story illustrating the ACCURATE meaning of the Biblical words faith and believe : A certain man was diagnosed with a painful stomach ulcer, and one day (over the phone) he told a friend about his affliction. Excited, the friend said, Oh, man, I have the cure for you! All you have to DO is drink 16 ounces of carrot & cabbage juice daily for a week or two and your pain will be gone and your ulcerous tissue will heal. In fact, the friend continued, I ll even let you borrow my juicer. Well, a month went by and the man never came for the juicer, so the friend called him up one day and inquired, How s your ulcer doing? Oh, it hurts terrible, the man groaned. Amazed, the good friend asked, Well how come you never came over for my juicer? You do believe what I told you would cure your pain don t you? Yes! the man indignantly replied. (But he still never came for the juicer.) A year later the man with the juicer had a female friend who was diagnosed with the same affliction. After giving her the same wise advice he had given his male friend a year earlier, he asked her, Do you believe me? The woman said, No, not really. But later that night the man with the juicer heard a knock on his door, and he opened it up to find the ailing lady crying on his porch asking, Can I take your juicer home with me? Not two weeks later, the man with the juicer received a phone call from the woman, and she ecstatically shouted, My ulcer is gone! I have no pain anymore! Now I ask you; which sick person believed (or had faith in) the WORDS of the man who owned the juicer? If you said the woman, you are correct!!! See, the man s words were worthless, his LACK OF ACTION (the fact that he did not come for the juicer) proved he DID NOT BELIEVE in his friend s cure even though he said he did! On the other hand, the woman s ACTION (the fact that she came for the juicer) proved somewhere deep down inside her spirit (thoughts, desires, & emotions) she had FAITH in the cure even though she said she did not. THAT, my friend, is the correct meaning behind the original Greek 290

5 words translated faith or believe in the Bible. Therefore, when the Bible states those who believe in Christ will receive eternal life what does that mean? In other words, what are the ACTIONS that back up a belief or faith in Christ? Friend, again, this is all SPIRITUAL in meaning: It has nothing to do with believing in the earthly man Jesus Christ, for that would require a person to have heard or know the story of Jesus Christ (which only few have throughout history)! Friend, I have already told you Christ represents the Spirit of Love, which is God; thus, to believe in love (God) means to obey the 10 Love Commandments!!! See, the man Jesus Christ was simply the spiritual embodiment of love. So, once again, this is all the same thing: You cannot say you believe or have faith in Jesus Christ (the Spirit of Love) while simultaneously disobeying the 10 Love Commandments. That would make you a liar like the Apostle John wrote! Friend, believing in, knowing, and loving Christ is all the same thing; the 3 terms are ONLY proved through our ACTIONS of obeying the 10 love Commandments. Now you can truly understand the plethora of Biblical New Testament verses like: Whosoever liveth and BELIEVETH in me (Christ) shall never die (John 11:26). And: Verily, verily, I (Christ) say unto you, He that BELIEVETH on me hath everlasting life (John 6:47). Do you understand there is NO contradiction between Jesus making these statements in regards to how to obtain eternal life or answering someone s questions of what must I DO to receive eternal life by naming off the 10 Love Commandments (Golden Rule) and saying keep them? Both declarations are identical in meaning, because to believe in Christ means to believe in love, which means to obey the 10 Love Commandments! See, both statements accurately reveal the WAY leading to eternal life in the Promise Land. Friend, Jesus preached nothing but LOVE. Consequently, his words (instructions) to mankind were to continually obey the 10 Love Commandments. Thus, he would also say things like: Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man KEEP my saying (words), he shall never see death (John 8:51). Do you see? You will receive eternal life because you willingly chose to keep Jesus words to obey the 10 Love Commandments. For these are the ACTIONS (or works) that prove you truly have FAITH in GOD (Love). 291

6 To be perfectly frank, the original Greek words translated faith and believe would have been better served if translated obey. In other words, he who obeys Christ s words of love will receive eternal life! And, as a matter of fact, the Bible actually uses the word obey several times in relation to how to obtain eternal life : And being made perfect, he (Jesus) became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that OBEY him (Hebrews 5:9). Ah, do you see? Friend, there is NOTHING conflicting here in Scripture! Thus, this verse proves to believe in Christ really means to obey him. And the 10 Love Commandments are what we are to obey i.e. DO the things on the do side of the list and DO NOT DO the things on the don t side of the list. THAT is the WAY to eternal life. Consequently, to believe NOT in Christ really means to disobey him. Disobey what? The 10 Love Commandments!!! Jesus said, He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that BELIEVETH NOT the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him (John 3:36). Here, the English phrase believeth not was translated from a SINGLE Greek word in the original New Testament manuscripts apeitheo, which literally means: to disobey, be disobedient! Do you see? To believe NOT the Son literally means to disobey him! Friend, people who disobey Christ s (God s) unswerving message of Love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself by keeping the 10 Love Commandments are those who do NOT believe in Christ (Love)! Thus, if you willingly disobey the 10 Love Commandments, you prove you do not believe in the Son, and you will NOT reap eternal life but will endure the wrath of God!!! In acknowledging the first half of the above verse then, the ONLY way to prove you believe on the Son (Christ) is by obeying God s Law of love (10 Love Commandments) and THAT is how you obtain eternal life. Yes, Christ s (God s) message of how to obtain eternal life was consistent and true throughout Scripture, for obeying the 10 Love Commandments is the WAY! Knowing the proper meaning behind the Biblical word believe, one can now finally understand the real meaning of the famous verse: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever BELIEVETH IN HIM should not perish, but have everlasting 292

7 life (John 3:16). See, it took Jesus sinless, spiritual death to free us from sin s power of death (make forgiveness for our sins available), but then it takes our following the WAY of love ( believing in Christ ) by obeying the 10 Love Commandments to receive eternal life. In fact, Christ said this immediately after the famous verse above: He that believeth on him (Christ who is love) is not condemned: but he that BELIEVETH NOT is condemned already (John 3:18). What are the believeth not people DOING that proves they do not believe in Christ and thus condemns them? Living evilly (disobeying the 10 Love Commandments)!!! Their actions (deeds) prove they do NOT believe in LOVE! Jesus confirmed this point as he continued speaking, And THIS is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their DEEDS WERE EVIL. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that DOETH truth cometh to the light, that his DEEDS may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God (Love) (John 3:19-21). This full discourse by Jesus makes it obvious, again, that it is our good deeds (obeying the 10 Love Commandments) that validates our belief in Christ! And these are the people who fulfill the word believe in John 3:16, and therefore are not condemned (will not perish) but will receive eternal life. James argued well that only someone s obedience to the 10 Love Commandments proves they have faith in Christ (love) : Dear brothers, what s the use of saying that you have FAITH and are Christians if you aren t proving it by helping others? Will that kind of faith save anyone? If you have a friend who is in need of food and clothing, and you say to him, Well, good-bye and God bless you; stay warm and eat hearty, and then don t give him clothes or food, what good does that do? So you see, it isn t enough just to have faith. You must also DO GOOD (do love) to prove that you have it. Faith that doesn t show itself by good works (bearing fruit) is no faith at all it is dead and useless (James 2:14-17, Living Bible). Wow! James confirms the original Greek word translated believe is actually an action based faith in love! Did you notice the example action of love James used to demonstrate belief in Christ (God)? It was the DO side of the 8 th Love Commandment i.e. do not steal but give to the poor, feed 293

8 the hungry, clothe the naked, etc. In other words, James is saying if you are NOT keeping the 10 Love Commandments (walking in love towards God and your neigbor), you do not have true faith (belief) in Christ (love), and your soul will perish on Judgment Day! See, James words perfectly agree with Jesus Judgment Day parable, where he revealed God pronouncing, You did not feed me or give me clothing, so away with you into outer darkness. I told you the Bible s message was beautifully congruent! Let us now inspect some greatly misinterpreted Bible verses that preachers often cite in an attempt to make obtaining eternal life sound effortless. Paul wrote: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the LORD Jesus, and shalt BELIEVE in thine heart (spirit) that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (Romans 10:9). Do you know what it means to confess Jesus (God) as your LORD? It means to OBEY Him ; it means to obey his words of love (obey the 10 Love Commandments)! See, if someone is your LORD and MASTER, YOU DO WHAT THEY TELL YOU TO DO! See, you cannot say you have confessed Jesus as your LORD when you DO NOT DO the things he said! Jesus said this himself: And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and DO NOT the things which I say? (Luke 6:46). Do you see? If you are not obeying the 10 Love Commandments, YOU HAVE NOT CONFESSED JESUS AS YOUR LORD!!! But today, ministers love to quote Paul s verse above conveniently glossing over the true meaning behind the confessing Jesus as Lord part and then misinterpret the word believe to simply mean think. This is a deadly doctrine!!! Yet, many people have bought the lie If you think Jesus was a real man and God sent him to die on a cross for your sins, and if you think he was resurrected; then you are saved and on your way to eternal life in God s Kingdom! Do you see the gross error in this doctrine? The word believe has been downgraded to only mean think. This is dead WRONG!!! To hold to this erroneous belief you must ignore the truthfulness of every Bible verse I have discussed in this book so far, with respect to what a soul MUST DO to obtain eternal life. You have to throw away most of the Bible as a lie! Please do not wrest Paul s words to your own destruction! Peter knew people were doing this with Paul s words even 294

9 back in his day: Our wise and beloved brother PAUL Some of his comments are not easy to understand, and there are people who are deliberately stupid they have TWISTED his letters around to mean something quite different from what he meant, just as they do the other parts of Scripture and the result is DISASTER for them (II Peter 3:15, 16, Living Bible). Amen and Amen! It is from the above incorrect doctrine that we get inane questions like, I wonder what happens to all the people who never heard about Jesus? Friend, EVERYONE has heard about Christ for he is love! Anyone who obeys the WAY of love (good) knows the Spirit of Christ (God), no matter when or where they lived in history or if they ever heard the name of Jesus! But if you are fortunate enough to have heard the story of how the man Jesus Christ came to Earth to deliver mankind s dead spirits from sin s death grasp through his sinless death and resurrection, then you ought to (all the more) want to make him the LORD of your soul by obeying his words of love (keeping the 10 Love Commandments) in order to lay hold on eternal life! Jesus said: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH the will of my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 7:21). Yes, Jesus words prove the only people who can truly call God or Christ their Lord are those who are DOING God s (love s) will. Another misrepresented verse of Paul s (making obtaining eternal life sound easy) occurs because ministers neatly pluck it out of Scripture without exposing Paul s very next words: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13). This effortless WAY to the Promise Land is trumpeted everywhere you look these days. But what does it mean to truly call upon the name of the Lord? Well, you have to read the entire Bible for that answer, or just read Paul s very next words: How then shall they call on him in whom they have not BELIEVED? (Romans 10:14). Wow, do you see? You cannot call upon the Lord to save you if you do not believe in love i.e. want to turn from your sins and obey God s 10 Love Commandments. I am warning you to not twist Paul s words to your own peril! Paul was not confused in his doctrine of salvation; he knew perfectly well a person MUST turn from sin to be saved. Listen to him: For God sometimes uses sorrow in our lives to help us turn away 295

10 from sin and SEEK eternal life. We should never regret his sending it (II Corinthians 7:10, Living Bible). See, eternal life is something we seek, because it is a narrow path we MUST follow in order to obtain entrance into the Promise Land. Therefore, genuine calling on the Lord to be saved refers to someone seriously meaning business with God by wanting to quit sinning (repent). So, I urge you to turn from your sins of disobeying the 10 Love Commandments and work out your eternal salvation, laying hold on eternal life. Here is my great concern: It appears we have a vast generation of people, today, who enjoy sitting in church buildings and listening to someone talk! But all this activity amounts to is hearing. That is why the deed of church attendance will count for nothing (a big fat Zero!) on Judgment Day. Please do not think you are doing God s will because you attend church, for that is simply a hearing (listening) activity. And only hearing is useless in obtaining eternal life. Jesus said, And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and DOETH THEM NOT, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it (Matthew 7:24-27). Friend, Jesus did not preach church attendance ; he preached self-sacrificial love towards God and others by obeying the 10 Love Commandments. I beg you to start aligning your life up to God s 10 Love Commandments, for that is how you become a DOER of Jesus words of love! In conclusion then, our faith or belief in Christ is only demonstrated or actuated by our willful choice to obey the 10 Love Commandments, meaning our faith or belief in God (love) is confirmed only by our willful choice to walk in love towards God and our neighbor which is the very definition of REPENTENCE. Paul described what the Biblical words faith or belief meant with a few powerful words: faith (which) worketh by love (Galatians 5:6). How about that? Is that not awesome? In other words, Faith in God (or Christ) means to BELIEVE IN LOVE. See, ONLY by our WORKS OF LOVE (obeying the 10 Love Commandments) do we prove we have FAITH in GOD! THAT is the true saving, Promise-Land-entering, kind of faith (belief) we must possess to obtain eternal life! Do you 296

11 understand? And it will be faith (working by love) that lands a soul in the Kingdom of God, for that act of repentance will activate God to forgive their sins through Christ s redemptive work. Yes, friend, salvation is a journey. It is an everyday, minute-byminute decision. Once you make the decision to actively keep God s 10 Love Commandments (repent of sin) do not ever go back to disobeying them again! Follow the narrow way until your last dying breath, and you will reap eternal life. It is really a simple matter of reaping what you sow : If you willingly sow love you will justly reap love! Listen to Paul s Scripture fully explaining how a person s continuance in traveling the narrow way is the KEY to leading them to the Promise Land: he (God) will SAVE their SOULS if they trust (believe) in him, living quiet, good, and loving lives (I Timothy 2:15, Living Bible). The King James Bible says: if they CONTINUE in faith (belief) and charity (love) and holiness (10 Commandments) with sobriety (mental soundness) (I Timothy 2:15). THAT is the truth about HOW to obtain eternal life show continual goodness (love) towards God and everyone else on the face of planet Earth! Let us listen to more Scripture passages penned by Paul confirming PERSISTANT faith (shown by love) is the key to obtaining eternal life: And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not (Galatians 6:9). Again, Paul wrote; Who (God) will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by PATIENT CONTINUANCE in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life. But unto them that are contentious, and do NOT obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil (Romans 2:6-9). How can the point be any clearer! Even Peter wrote: Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator (I Peter 4:19). Clearly, if we continue to obey the 10 Love Commandments, which is well doing or doing good, we will reap eternal life by entering the Kingdom of God. Now, let us return to the example God made of the Israelites in the 40 year wilderness journey portion of the grand salvation parable, revealing the truth of what all mankind MUST DO to obtain 297

12 eternal life (enter the Promise Land). The New Testament writer of the book of Hebrews perfectly summed up the REASON most Israelites PERISHED in the wilderness, having never entered the Promise Land: But with whom was he (God) grieved forty years? Was it not with them that had SINNED, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should NOT enter into his rest, but to them that BELIEVED NOT? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief (Hebrews 3:17-19). Wow, do you see? The message is perfectly clear: The Israelite s willful SIN (disobedience to the 10 Love Commandments) PROVED their unbelief in God, Christ, and Love! And for THAT reason, they perished in the wilderness, having never entered God s rest in the Promise Land. Yes, unmistakably, in the above passage of Scripture we see again the Biblical word believe really signifies to sin not, which means to love by obeying God s 10 Love Commandments. And to not believe signifies to sin, which means to not love by disobeying God s 10 Love Commandments. Therefore, you should now recognize God s Israelite story (parable) was exactly what I told you it was; it was God s message to all mankind revealing EVERYTHING involved in a soul s journey back to God! In other words, it revealed EVERYTHING it took/takes for a soul to obtain eternal life by entering the Promise Land (Kingdom of God). And here is what it took/takes: it took God supernaturally delivering mankind from sin s bondage of spiritual death through Jesus, which placed us in a wilderness where it was now possible to reach the Promise Land; then, it only takes our FAITH in love (God), which means to repent of sin by willingly choosing to follow the WAY of love (obey the 10 Love Commandments). Yes, friend, it will only be because of unbelief in love (God) shown by a soul s willful desire to continue sinning (disobey the 10 Love Commandments) that a soul will perish in Earth s wilderness and NEVER obtain eternal life in the Kingdom of God. The Hebrew writer truly understood the reason God had led the Israelites on a 40 year journey through the wilderness. Let us hear more of his beautiful, divinely-inspired words revealing what it takes for a soul to obtain eternal life: The Holy Spirit warns us to listen to him, to be careful to hear his voice today and not let our hearts become 298

13 set against him, as the people of Israel did. They steeled themselves against his LOVE and complained against him in the desert while he was testing them God says, I was very angry with them, for their hearts were always looking somewhere else instead of up to me, and they never found the PATHS I wanted them to follow Beware then of your own hearts, dear brothers, lest you find that they, too, are EVIL and UNBELIEVING and leading you away from the living God. Speak to each other about these things every day while there is still time, so that none of you will become hardened against God, being blinded by the DECEITFULNESS of SIN. For if we are FAITHFUL to the END we will share in all that belongs to Christ But now is the time. Never forget the warning, Today if you hear God s voice speaking to you, do not harden your heart against him, as the people of Israel did when they rebelled against him in the desert. And who were those people I speak of, who heard God s voice speaking to them but then rebelled against him? They were the ones who came out of Egypt with Moses their leader. And who was it who made God angry for all those forty years? These same people who SINNED and as a result DIED in the wilderness. And to whom was God speaking when he swore with an oath that they could NEVER go into the land he had promised his people? He was speaking to all those who DISOBEYED him. And why couldn t they go in? Because they didn t TRUST (BELIEVE) him. (Hebrews 3:7-19, Living Bible). Ah, it is so obvious: willful sin = disobeying the 10 Love Commandments = unbelief in God (Love); and repentance = obeying the 10 Love Commandments = belief in God (Love). Jude was given the same revelation: I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the LORD, having SAVED the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that BELIEVED not (Jude 1:5). The Living Bible writes: Remember this fact which you know already that the LORD SAVED a whole nation of people out of the land of Egypt, and then killed every one of them who did NOT TRUST and OBEY him (Jude 1:5, Living Bible). Do you see? Look, the truth is God saved ALL mankind from the bondage of sin & death through Jesus redemptive work on the cross, but sadly MOST people s souls will still perish because they will refuse to repent 299

14 of sin and live a life of love toward God and their neighbor, as outlined by obedience to God s 10 Love Commandments!!! By now, you should be able to clearly understand Paul s writings like: NOT by works of righteousness which WE have done, but according to his mercy (love) he (God) saved us through Jesus Christ our Savior THAT they which have BELIEVED in God (Love) might be careful to maintain GOOD WORKS (obey the 10 Love Commandments) (Titus 3:5-8). See, there it is, again: God s 2 part process that leads a soul to eternal life! Do you want to hear it again from Paul? Ok: But God, who is rich in mercy (love), for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ For by grace are ye saved through FAITH; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO GOOD WORKS (obeying the 10 Love Commandments), which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:4-10). Friend, we can obtain eternal life ONLY because of our Faith in God (Love) which is proved only by our willful decision to repent of sin and live a life of love (obey the 10 Love Commandments). Please, please, listen to me, reader! Today is the day. Now is the time to repent! If you are still breathing air on planet Earth, you have a chance at eternal life! Do not harden your heart (thoughts, desires, & emotions) to the truth, but turn from your wickedness (evil) and choose to love God. For if you harden your heart, stiffen your neck, and never stop your willful sinning, you will seal your soul s doom for all eternity! And I promise you THAT will be the biggest mistake you ever make!!! It is insanity to trade eternal life for the lousy, fleeting pleasures of sin. You must willfully eliminate idolatry (love of money), blasphemy, murder (hatred), sexual immorality, thievery, lying, covetousness, etc. out of your heart. We are in the wilderness, my friend, and God is testing every one of us! He is finding out whether we love him or not by every choice we make every day of our lives. I am in the same battle as you are reader, fighting for my eternal destiny; therefore, let us forsake sin while there is still a chance, proving we are BELIEVERS!!! 300
