FIXER UPPER: III NEW LIFE! Karen F. Bunnell Elkton United Methodist Church May 20, 2018 Pentecost Acts 2:1-21 John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 Well, by now, after three weeks, you ve pretty much gotten the idea of the Fixer Upper show on HGTV. You heard me say in the first sermon about how when the show s hosts, Chip and Joanna Gaines, look at houses to renovate they take into account things like the condition of the foundation and other things. In the second sermon, we talked about houses with good bones, and what part they play in the renovation process. Now, today, in this final sermon, we get to the end of the process, what the show calls the reveal. That s when the whole renovation project is done, and the restored home is shown (revealed) to the people who bought it. It s actually pretty cool to watch, because Chip and Joanna bring the couple to the front of the property with their eyes closed, and then when they open them, they see a very large I guess you d call it a canvas on wheels on which is a picture of the original house before it was renovated. So they see what they started with, and then usually it s Joanna who says, Are you ready to see your fixer upper? And then she and Chip, standing on either side of this canvas, roll it back and the clients open their eyes, and see the new creation, which is always, just spectacular. Most times you can hardly recognize that it is the same house. They do absolutely miraculous things, and very, very often the homeowners are reduced to tears of joy because they are so happy with the results. It s not uncommon to hear them say We can t believe it! We can t believe it s the same house! We can t believe the change! They are absolutely overwhelmed, and oh, they can t wait to start their new lives living there. They ve got a whole new life ahead of them and they can t wait to get to it! Well, friends, I would imagine that many of those same words were uttered on the Day of Pentecost. I know there must have been tears of joy shed, and even words of disbelief about the difference in their lives because of the inflowing of the Holy Spirit upon them. Remember what happened? The scripture tells us that the people were altogether in one place, and suddenly from heaven came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting, and tongues, as
of fire, appeared among them, and rested upon each of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit. There were people from places far and wide, and the amazing thing was that each person understood in his/her own language! It was incredible. Something was happening! Something amazing! Something of God! And the people were all abuzz, excited at what God was doing. They knew he was doing something new, something that Jesus had promised the Spirit would do, and they knew their lives would never be the same again, and I m sure their faces were lined with tears and their voices lifting words of joy. They were so excited that the scripture says that others who were watching thought they were out of control and accused them of being drunk! But Peter stood up and straightened them out, assuring them that the people weren t drunk, no indeed they had all been made new by the power of the Holy Spirit. And friends, Peter was Exhibit A of that incredible change. Remember Peter, who not that long before, had been the one who even denied knowing his friend, his Savior Jesus. Peter, who failed when Jesus needed him the most; whose voice failed him when Jesus needed him to speak a word for him. You want to see the change the Spirit wrought? Here it is Peter has found his voice and raises it up for all to hear preaching a sermon, telling them that this is what God had promised all along. From years long before, in the days of the prophet Joel. And this is what Jesus said in that passage we heard from John he promised to send the Spirit to dwell with humanity and fill them with power. And so, on the Day of Pentecost, the promise was fulfilled. The Spirit descended, touched hearts and lives in need of refurbishing and renovation, if you will, made them brand new, and poured on them the power to do incredible things. It was such an amazing, life-changing day that the scriptures tell us that thousands of people claimed Jesus as Savior that day and that s why we call Pentecost the birthday of the church. The Holy Spirit the Spirit of God has been creating and re-creating forever. For the Spirit who descended upon the people on Pentecost is the very Spirit who breathed to life creation. Remember the words in Genesis In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form and void and darkness covered the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And that very Spirit was the one by whom God sent his only begotten Son Jesus into the world in the womb of Mary.
And the same Spirit who descended upon Jesus in his baptism in the River Jordan empowering him for the ministry God called him to do. And the same Spirit Jesus spoke of in the passage we heard from John today. Jesus was speaking to his followers just before his death and he knew they were afraid. They were afraid of what was going to happen to him. They were afraid of what might happen to them, and most of all, they had no idea how they could go on without him by their side. And so Jesus gave them this wonderful promise that he would send the Spirit to be with them, to dwell with them always, and to empower them to do great things in his name. And on the Day of Pentecost, that s exactly what happened, in a powerful, powerful way, with powerful results results no one could have imagined might happen. New life was born, new energy, new possibilities. With God, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, anything was possible, and indeed, still today, with God, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, anything is possible. Life can still be made new, we can still do amazing things, even more than we can imagine. It s one of the reasons we always confirm our youth on Pentecost. As a reminder that we believe that the Spirit will be alive and at work in these young lives, and who knows what they might do? We lay our hands on their heads, we pray over them, we as a congregation say we will stand by them and support them, and we entrust them to God to make their lives new, and to use them as he wishes. It is a powerful thing to call upon the Spirit of God and follow where the Spirit leads. Because you never know where that will be. Way back in the 1780 s the Spirit of God filled a young man by the name of John. He was an Anglican priest, from a family of Anglican priests, a learned man who studied at Oxford University and then was ordained. All was going well, at least it was going okay. I mean everything was going as it should go in the life of this young man, and in his ministry, but somehow, something was missing for him. Sure, he was presiding over worship and administering the sacraments, but there was no spark, no passion something was missing. When the Spirit blew into his life, it breathed new life into him, and he stepped out on a limb, and decided to try some new things things aimed at stirring up people s hearts for the Lord. He felt like the church had gotten into a rut that people were just coming to worship, going through the motions, and that was it. So he started some small groups, and some Bible studies, and prayer circles. He also thought the church had gotten too stuck in caring about itself and its buildings so he began to preach outside the walls of the church, in fields, and heaven forbid, in prisons! The Spirit kept directly him to do these things and he listened and did them and to be honest, got him in a whole lot of trouble with the powers-that-be in the church. But it didn t stop him and he kept it up and kept it up and his enthusiasm became infectious and others
caught the Spirit and guess what became of that movement he started a little thing called the Methodist Church now, hundreds and hundreds of years later, the United Methodist Church. All because the Spirit of God moved the heart of one man named John Wesley. It cost him a lot in one way, but oh, what God was able to do with the passion that the Spirit stirred up in him. In a totally different way, the Spirit of God stirred up something in another man called George not so many years ago. His story is one I heard about just last week at the Wesley Seminary commencement service at the National Cathedral. I know of you watched the service as it was streamed live, so you heard the commencement speaker, David Gregory, formerly of NBC news. His speech was incredible, spell-binding, but he s not the man I want to talk about. The man I want to talk about is President George W. Bush, because I think the Spirit led him, one day, when David Gregory was in his office, to ask David a question, a question that would end up changing his life. He looked Gregory right in the eye and said, Gregory, how s your faith? Imagine that, a President of the United States asking a reporter, How s your faith? That takes guts, but more than that, it takes caring enough about that person to ask the question. And I think it was the Spirit of God who led George Bush to ask the question. Who knew that it would be a question that would help David Gregory make significant changes in his life, and particularly in his faith? Who? God did. Finally, let me tell you one more Spirit story, told by a pastor named Shannon Kershner, from a church in North Carolina, where one of my best friends from seminary happens to be the music director. She tells about how their church takes part in a ministry called Stewpot, which feeds hundred people. Her church goes there once a month to serve a meal. A couple of years ago, the organization invited representatives from all the churches who served meals, to come to a Volunteer Appreciation luncheon. Shannon says that after everyone had gotten their food, a group of the regulars from Stewpot stood up and gathered around the piano to sing for the volunteers. Mind you, these regulars were people struggling in their lives struggling for lack of money, lack of homes, lack of jobs. They gathered around the piano, took a deep breath and began to sing I m gonna lay down my burdens, down by the riverside, down by the riverside, down by the riverside... Shannon says that the longer they sang, the taller they seemed to stand, their heads lifted higher, they began to sway with the power of the music. And then she and the other people at the luncheon began to catch the Spirit too, and swayed in their seats and clapped their hands and joined in the singing. And she wrote this about it: I had a clear sense I was watching God s holy breath rushing freely, sparking flames of new life and deep courage. All kinds of people
from all kinds of places were in one room, sharing a meal, singing songs, breathing in the breath of God and talking with each other about their faith, about the way the world could be, should be, about the day when the Stewpot did not need to exist for all manners of things were well. You just could not help but breathe in with abandon. (Shannon Kershner, Pentecost, 6/4/06)
