3 Parish Life From Ron Ryan Dear Parishioners, I want to give you an update on recent developments with my diagnosis. As most of you know, I was diagnosed in February with stage 4 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and have been undergoing chemotherapy since then. I had a mid-way PET scan in April which showed some diminishment in the lymphoma. My final round of chemo was in June. Last week I had a follow-up PET scan to evaluate the results. Unfortunately, the scan showed that the original tumor, though smaller than when chemotherapy began in February, had not diminished any further since April. My oncologist has recommended that I begin radiation treatments. I have an appointment in early August to learn more about what that will involve. While I m disappointed in the results and not looking forward to radiation! I still feel very peaceful about this next step along the journey. I ve been able to be back in the parish and working full-time for the last two months. I plan to continue working, but of course will need to reevaluate as the new treatments begin. Thank you to all of you who have expressed your support and been so generous in your prayers. I feel so blessed to be surrounded by such a loving, caring community. I know that your prayers and support will continue to be an encouragement and strength to me in the months ahead. God bless you. St. Anne Parish: Celebrating 110 Years Interesting facts about St. Anne Parish Did you know St. Anne Parish consisted of forty families when it was established in For the first two years, the parish was staffed by Redemptorist priests from Sacred Heart Parish. In 1910, Fr. Matthew Woods became the first resident pastor. Fr. Thomas Quain was pastor of St. Anne for 37 years from November 10, 1922 until his death on December 22, He was the longest serving pastor in the parish s history. He was honored with the title Monsignor on the 50th anniversary of his ordination in Margaret McAlerney served as housekeeper for the priests of St. Anne for 44 years, from The land for St. Anne School was donated to the parish by Mr. & Mrs. F. McDermott in Construction of the original school building was completed in Spring 1923 at a cost of $43,000. Staffed by five Holy Names Sisters, the door opened in September of that year with 150 students. The convent (now the St. Anne House of Prayer) was completed in December 1930 at a cost of $25,491. It was the first building built as a convent in the diocese (until then, houses were purchased and converted for the sisters use). Over the next 88 years, 192 Holy Names Sisters lived in the convent while serving St. Anne School or other ministries in the area. During the 1920s and 1930s, novenas to St. Anne drew so many people that they had to be held outdoors. In a letter to Bishop Shaughnessy, Fr. Quain reported that in 1934, over 3000 people attended. By 1946, the parish had outgrown the church (which held about 250 people), and the building s basement was remodeled into a chapel. On Sundays, Masses were held simultaneously in both the church and the basement. 3

5 Parish Life School Supplies Thank You to the early shoppers who have already brought in backpacks and school supplies! We re closing in on our goal of 100 loaded backpacks to be distributed through Mary s Place this year. But some serious shopping is still needed: Advice from some of the expert shoppers in our parish is to carry the list of needed supplies with you, so it s handy if you come upon a Dollar Store or a Staples or other store with Back-to-School signs in the windows. It s also handy if you can t sleep and find that you have an urge to order something online. Deadline for gathering supplies is Wednesday, August 15. Cartons are at every entrance, or bring donations to the parish office. Envelopes for cash donations are at every entrance, and may be put in our regular offering. An inter-faith packing party, where all the backpacks and supplies are assembled by grade-level, will take place Saturday, August 18. St. Anne Tree Work You may have noticed a number of trees and shrubs have been either been pared back or removed. Many were over the roof lines or touching the buildings. The two camellias by the day chapel entrance will be replaced in the fall with Italian Cypress trees. A huge thank you to the folks who have given of their valuable time to tend to areas of the gardens at the church and House of Prayer.
