Right in God s Sight Paul s Letter to the Romans Romans 1:18-32 Inductive Discovery Lesson 2 Imagine the Christians in Rome hearing Paul s letter for the first time. Word spread through the community that a visitor had arrived with a letter from the apostle. (Some speculate this visitor was Phoebe, whom Paul mentions in Romans 16:1.) The Roman believers were familiar with who Paul was, but had never met him. We can picture them crowding together in someone s home, intently listening as his letter is read. They nod and smile as Paul commends them for their faith. They are blessed to hear that the preacher prays tirelessly for them! He is anxious to visit Rome and, for their part, they are happy for him to come. Then Paul s words take a serious turn, and the mood in the room does too. Listeners swallow hard at Paul s candid portrayal of the downward spiral of sin. Some shift uncomfortably. A mother cups hands over her child s ears. Human nature being what it is, we imagine some piously shaking their head at the tawdry description of other people s sins. In typical candor, Paul speaks directly to them in the next chapter. The church in Rome quickly discovered Paul s capacity to get to the root of a problem and waste no time doing it. Do you suppose Paul made some of his listeners uncomfortable? He surely did and still does but that wasn t his purpose for mentioning such things. I am not ashamed of the gospel, Paul wrote. So he acknowledges the grim facts first. God s wrath is poured out on those who ignore the truth and willfully live in sin. Now he can offer a complete explanation of why the gospel is such good news! Romans 1:18-32 Read the passage without interruption. If possible, read it again from a different translation. Briefly describe in your own words what Paul is saying. 1
Working Text for Romans 1:18-32 New American Standard Version (NAS) 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. Scripture taken from the New American Standard Bible, 1995 by the Lockman Foundation. Used by permission. 2
Write down your OBSERVATIONS Read the section and record what you see. Use the first column to keep track of what you find in the Bible passage. (Who? What? When? Where?) Circle repeated words and phrases. Use the second column to record information you gather from other sources such as a dictionary, concordance, maps, etc. You can also use this section to jot down your thoughts, impressions or questions that come to mind. Do your best to follow Paul s train of thought. Does he emphasize a particular topic? Are his words urgent? Encouraging? Commanding? What issues or problems does he address? What questions does he ask? Romans 1:18-23 Facts from the passage: My Research and Personal Observations: 3
Romans 1:24-27 Facts from the passage: My Research and Personal Observations: Romans 1:28-32 Facts from the passage: My Research and Personal Observations: 4
Key Words and Phrases Key words and phrases help us understand the main point the writer wants to make. How do we recognize key words and phrases? Here are some simple things to look for. When you see a word or phrase repeated, you can be sure Paul is using it to make his point. In Romans, Paul frequently quotes Old Testament scripture to support his point. You may find some key words there. If you are unfamiliar with a word or its meaning, it becomes a key word for you. Take time to learn the definition so you will understand how it is being used in the sentence. List any key words and phrases you found in Romans 1: Write the definition of the following words or phrases. Use a regular dictionary or a concordance with a Greek Dictionary if you have one. wrath of God (vs.18) suppress the truth (vs.18) futile in their thoughts (vs.21) 5
INTERPRETATION What does it mean? Look for a spiritual lesson. Be careful not to read into the Bible an idea that is not there. Examine each verse in light of the verses around it. To help you find a spiritual lesson, ask questions such as, Is there a command to obey? A promise to claim? A condition to that promise? Is there a warning to heed? An example to follow or avoid? State the lesson in one simple sentence. APPLICATION How does it apply to me? We don t study the Bible just to gather information we want to spiritually grow. Our heart needs to be open to change. The only way to move truth off the pages of your Bible and into your life is to put it into action. To apply a spiritual lesson, we must examine ourselves and take deliberate steps to do something with what we have learned. Ask yourself: Is this a new insight for me, or does it reinforce what I already know? What does it challenge me to do? Does it point out error in my attitude or actions? What changes does it require? Think of how the lesson relates to you and what specific course of action you will take. Write your application in the form of a question to make it personal. Romans 1:18-23 Lesson: Application:? Romans 1:24-27 Lesson: Application:? Romans 1:28-32 Lesson: Application:? Summary Write a simple sentence that summarizes what the passage is about. Give a title to the chapter that will help you personally to remember it. 6
Take a Closer Look Memorize God s Word The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest to them, for God has shown it to them. Romans 1:18-19 NKJV Choose the translation you prefer to memorize from and re-write the verse here. (Tip: Be sure to look at the New Living Translation.) Meditate on God s Word Look up. What does this verse teach you about God? (For example, look for signs of His character, His attributes, His works, His promises.) Look around. What does this verse teach you about the world and people in general? Look within. What does this verse teach you about yourself? Look ahead. Does this verse give you reason to hope? Briefly share your thoughts. Look alive! Given the opportunity, how would you express the truth found in this verse to someone who needs to hear it? 7
Make God s Word Your Prayer As you memorize and meditate on this verse, pray it back to the Lord. Let the Holy Spirit examine your heart, increase your understanding, and help you to pray. Ask Him for faith and strength to act on the truth of God s Word. This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. 1 John 5:14-15 NASB God s Word Bearing Fruit For you, personally, what has been the most important lesson from this study? How will you put what God has shown you into practice? Something to Think About... The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men - C.S. Lewis - 8
