Grade Record Sheet for 11/16/2017 Hand in Final! This week, entire grade is for Attending class: Enter 100 points for Total Score for 11/16/2017
Introduction to Galatians Galatia is a region in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) Visited during Paul s FIRST missionary journey (47-48 AD) Written soon after (49-50 AD although some think AD) Written to counter false teachers (Judaizers) Chapters 1 & 2 are Personal: Paul defends Justification by Faith Chapters 3 & 4 are Doctrinal; Paul explains Justification by Faith Chapters 5 & 6 are Practical; Paul applies Justification by Faith Timeline of Apostle Paul
Galatians Chapters 1&2 Gal 1:1-7: Paul s amazement: Many are so quickly turning away from the truth Gal 1:8-9: Paul s warning Those who preach another gospel are accursed Gal 1:11-24: Paul s testimony He was taught through direct revelation Gal 2:1-10: Paul confirmed by other apostles Gal 2:11-15: Paul s confrontation with Peter Gal 2:16-21: Paul defends the gospel We are justified by faith in Christ - not by the works of the law
The Law is Opposed to Faith Gal 3:1-5: How did you first believe? They were converted through Faith Why then are you turning back to the Law? Gal 3:6-7: The Example of Abraham Abraham was justified by Faith Abraham s descendants are those of Faith Gal 3:10-11: The Law Brings a Curse Vs 10 quotes Deut 27:26: Keeping ALL the Law ALL the time is impossible; thus the Law brings us into bondage Gal 3:13-14: Why Christ Came Christ purchased us out from under the curse of the Law We RECEIVE through Faith; the Just Shall Live by Faith
The Purpose of the Law Gal 3:19: The Law was temporary The Law was in effect until the Seed (Jesus Christ) came. Gal 3:21-22: The Law cannot bring life We are imprisoned by sin, convicted by the Law Both Old Testament & New Testament saints were to have faith in the Redeemer (Job 19:25) Gal 3:23-25: The Law is our tutor The Law points out our need for a Savior Gal 3:25-4:7: The Law is no longer in force We are no longer under a tutor, but find our identity in Christ! We are adopted into God s family with full rights as heirs!
Living by the Law brings Bondage Gal 4:8-9: Going back to the Law robs us of freedom Gal 4:22-25: A tale of 2 sons, 2 women, 2 cities Ishmael was born of Hagar (a bondwoman or slave) Symbolizes Law - trying to make your own way before God Isaac was born of Sarah (a freewoman) Symbolizes Faith Isaac was the child of promise Mt Sinai represents the Old Covenant one of Law Gal 4:26-28: Heavenly Jerusalem Represents the New Covenant one of Freedom This covenant will have many children Every one in this covenant is born because of a miracle of God Gal 5:1-4: Choose the Liberty in Christ! Law and Grace are mutually exclusive
Law vs Grace LAW Law condemns the sinner Law reveals sin Law slays the sinner Law condemns the best man Law says pay what you owe GRACE Grace redeems the sinner Grace atones for sin Grace makes the sinner alive Grace saves the worst man Grace says Paid in Full
Law vs Grace (continued) LAW Law says The wages of sin is death Law says The soul that sins shall die Law shuts every mouth before God Law says do and do not GRACE Grace says The gift of God is eternal life! Grace says Believe and Live! Grace opens the mouth to praise God! Grace says IT IS DONE! Law was FULFILLED - in Christ Grace abides FOREVER!
Evidence of our Salvation Gal 5:13-14: Serve one another in Love Gal 5:16-18: Walk in the Spirit God s Part He gave us His Holy Spirit Our Part Making Godly decisions Gal 5:19-21: Fruit of the Sinful Nature Gal 5:22-24: Fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23 NKJV) "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, {23} gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."
Fruit of the Spirit Table Characteristic Love Joy Peace Long Suffering Kindness Goodness Faithfulness Gentleness Self-Control Meaning Committed to well being of others Inner Joy in spite of circumstances Harmony, unity with God & others Patience, bear trials without complaint Merciful, puts others at ease Open hearted, generous Devotion, loyalty, dependability Humble, non-threatening demeanor Restrain one s emotions & actions
Final Exhortations Gal 6:2-5: Bear one another s burdens: (Gal 6:2 KJV) "Bear ye one another's burdens (Gal 6:5 KJV) "For every man shall bear his own burden. Are these 2 verses contradictory? Gal 6:7-9: Do not weary of doing good (Gal 6:7-9 NKJV) "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. {8} For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. {9} And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Gal 6:14-15: Glory only in the Cross We are no longer Jew or Gentile, but a new creation!
