Philippians 1:1-6 Bound for Joy John Fawcett was born of poor parents in Lidget Green, Yorkshire, England, in He was converted to Christ at the age of sixteen through the ministry of George Whitefield. At the age of twenty-six he was ordained as a Baptist minister. He accepted a call to pastor a small and impoverished congregation at Wainsgate in Northern England. After spending several years at Wainsgate where his salary was meager and his family growing, he received a call to the large influential Carter s Lane Baptist Church in London to succeed the wellknown Dr. Gill. As the day for the scheduled departure from Wainsgate arrived, with the saddened parishioners gathered around the wagons, Mrs. Fawcett finally broke down and said, John, I cannot bear to leave. I know not how to go! Nor can I either, said the saddened pastor. The order was soon given to unpack the wagons. Out of that experience John Fawcett wrote the song, Blest Be The Tie That Binds. The first stanza contains these words: Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. That song could have easily been written by the Apostle Paul about his beloved congregation in Philippi. Philippians 4:1, Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. No other church seemed to hold the place in Paul s heart like that of the Philippian church. It was founded by Paul on his second missionary journey (the first church in Europe). Now some ten years later Paul writes to them from Rome in a prison under very difficult circumstances. Yet these four chapters overflow with joy. Philippians 3:1, Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Philippians 4:4, Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. In Chapter 1, Paul had joy in spite of his circumstances. 4

How? His joy was in Jesus Christ (the single mind) Philippians 1:20-21, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Paul knew that his circumstances were under the control of a loving God and that his suffering for Christ helped do three things: Us too! 1. Strengthen the fellowship of the gospel (vs. 5) Philippians 1:5, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; 2. Promote the furtherance of the gospel (vs. 12) Philippians 1:12, But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; 3. Guard the faith of the gospel (vs. 27) Philippians 1:27, Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; We begin our study; we see Paul s joy in their fellowship. Philippians 1:1-6, Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: I. Paul s Greeting (vs. 1-2) Philippians 1:1-2, Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 5

Notice three things: 1. The Servants (vs. 1a) Philippians 1:1a, Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, A. Paul Notice he uses no apostolic title B. Timothy His name means, honor & God ; a native of Lystra was the son of a Greek father and a Jewish mother. As a young child he learned the scriptures from his godly grandmother Lois, and his mother Eunice. He was converted to Christ through Paul s ministry on his first missionary journey. Notice Paul s love for him: Philippians 2:19-23, But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel. Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me. C. Their Position the servants of Jesus Christ Literally, slaves Greek word doulos (bond slave) Paul was born a slave on the Damascus road (Acts 9) Timothy became a slave when he was led to Christ through Paul s ministry Did you know that the sons of slaves automatically became slaves. Paul s conception of the Christian life is that of slave hood. Following Jesus He came to serve (Philippians 2:5-7) Philippians 2:5-7, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: This is true of all Christians; we are bought with a price. The unsaved are slaves of sin 6

Romans 6:16-19, Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 2. The Saints (vs. 1), to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: A. Who are the saints? Literally to set apart (as holy) It s all Christians nowhere in scripture is any person by proper name addressed as saint. It is used in the plural collectively of the entire family of God. When does a person become a saint? At the moment of conversion notice the words, in Christ Jesus It s your position notice the two positions: in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, B. The Bishops Greek = episkopos Literally over and sight It s used of Jesus 1 Peter 2:25, For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. It s used of the Spiritual Leaders Also elders - Greek = presbuteros Pastor or shepherd 7

Acts 20:17, And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. Acts 20, 28, Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 1 Peter 5:1-2, The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; It s only a Man! 1 Timothy 2:12 3:7, But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Supported by the Church 1 Timothy 5:17, Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. C. The Deacons Greek = diakonois (through dust to stir up dust) Called to assist the Bishop-Pastor-Elders 8

Also Men 1 Timothy 3:8-13, Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. Illustration: Acts 6 A woman? (Phoebe) 3. The Salutation (vs. 2) Romans 16:1, I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant (diakonis) of the church which is at Cenchrea: Philippians 1:2, Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. A. The context of the blessing is twofold: Greek (Grace) & Hebrew (Peace) 1. Grace it s the Greek concept = charis a) we are saved by Grace Romans 3:24, Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: b) we are sanctified by Grace Romans 6:14, For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. c) we serve by God s Grace Romans 12:6. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; d) we are given God s Grace in suffering 2 Corinthians 12:9, And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in 9

weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Paul opens the letter with Grace (1:2) and closes it with Grace (4:23) Just like our lives! Jonathan Edwards What begins with grace, ends in glory! 2. Peace the Hebrew greeting = shalom There are two kinds of peace: a. with God (1:2) b. of God (4:7) it s not the absence of strife Notice that Grace always comes before peace Why is that? You can never experience the Peace of God until you ve first experienced the Grace of God. B. What is the source of this Grace and Peace? from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. It s from two persons within the divine being or God-head. Paul uses one preposition from, so linking the father and son as the common source. This affirms the deity of Jesus also He s called Lord. And its mediated to the believer through the indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit. Have you experienced His Grace and Peace? II. Paul s Gratitude (vs. 3-6) Philippians 1:3-6, I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Paul was in chains, but he wasn t crying He was in prison, but wasn t pouting 10

He was thankful and thoughtful of others Notice the key in verses 3-8, each verse contains the mention of you (vs. 3) remembrance of you. (vs. 4) prayer of mine for you (vs. 5) your fellowship (vs. 6) good work in you (vs. 7) I have you in my heart (vs. 8) I long after you Paul had joy because he was others-centered, and had an attitude of gratitude. Notice these three things: 1. Paul thanked God for them (vs. 3) Philippians 1:3, I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, thank is a present active indicative, it denotes continuous action in present time. Paul was always giving thanks; he was thanking God How about you? Are you thoughtful and thankful of others? How often do you think of others? 2. Paul prayed for them (vs. 4-5) Philippians 1:4-5, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; It s possible to be thoughtful and thankful of others and still not pray for them. Notice the words in verse 4: prayer and request, are the same Greek word it refers to an entreaty or supplication. 11

1. it happened when Paul prayed 2. Always 3. he prayed for all of them for you all 4. he made his requests...with joy, 5. notice the basis for Paul s prayer (vs. 5) For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Do you pray for others? Do you support God s work? 3. Paul was confident about them (vs. 6) Philippians 1:6, Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Paul s confidence was not in man, it wasn t in the Philippians, it was in God. Confident refers to a settled possession of mind and will. a) God began a work in them 1) Notice who did the work God! 2) God had chosen them - God had called them - God saved them - God was keeping them 3) It was a good work - salvation - sanctification - service 4) the work was begun in them Philippians 2:12-13, Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. b) God will finish the work in them 1 Thessalonians 5:24, Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. Notice He will complete it! The completion date the day of Jesus Christ: 12

Romans 8:28-30, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 13

Philippians 1:7-11 Paul s Prison Prayer Philippians 1:7-11, Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ. Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. We talk about prayer but don t pray. Paul had a very deep and abiding love for the believers in Philippi. He thanked God for them (vs. 3) He prayed for them (vs. 4) He was confident about them (vs. 6) But now, because I have you in my heart (vs. 7) greatly I long after you (vs. 8) Paul s prison strengthened their fellowship in the gospel. In verses 9 to 11, we find the things Paul actually prayed for. And this I pray (vs. 9) The character and content of Paul s prayer educates, encourages and serves as a pattern for us on what we should pray for ourselves and others. Notice, Paul s prayer was for spiritual growth and maturity. Paul s Prison Prayer has four requests: I. Abounding love (vs. 9) Philippians 1:9, And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; A. Notice what s on top of Paul s prayer list: love Why? It s the mark of the child of God and it s the greatest (1 Corinthians 13 faith, hope and love) B. Paul is not praying for them to love. C. Paul prays that their love would abound or overflow. 14

1 Thessalonians 4:9-10, But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; Abound the image of a river overflowing its banks literally, keep on overflowing. Notice the word love (Greek: Agape -1 Corinthians 13) seen in service. Does your life overflow with agape? How? 1. the Spirit of God Romans 5:5, And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Galatians 5:22, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 2. the Word of God in knowledge We grow in love by feeding upon God s word! 3. In judgment, or discriminate No sloppy agape wise and discriminating (discerning). II. Discerning Approval (vs. 10a) Philippians 1:10a, That ye may approve things that are excellent This action is the result of discerning love. The word approve, is used for testing money to determine whether it is real or counterfeit; it s also used for assessing metals to determine their value and worth. The word excellent, refers to the things which differ. It s not between good and bad, it s between primary and secondary. It s between the temporal and eternal values. The New International Version renders it: Discern what is best. 15

The J. B. Phillips Translation: Recognize the highest and best. It s the ability to distinguish the difference. Application: Even as Christians it s easy to spend our time and attention on things of secondary values and not of eternal worth it s priorities. Illustrations: Isaiah 55:1-2, Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. House, job, sports, TV, ext. I love that song: Rise up, O men of God! Rise up, O men of God! Have done with lesser things. Give heart and mind and soul and strength To serve the King of kings. - William P. Merrill We need wisdom to know the difference. III. Blameless Character (vs. 10b) Philippians 10b, that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ. Paul prays for their character in three dimensions: 1. As it concerns themselves (sincere) From the Latin sin cere - Literal meaning: Without Wax It also carries the idea of being judged by the sun light. Don t be two faced, hypocrisy or duplicity We won t be sinless, but we can be sincere (2 Corinthians 4) We are jars of clay, cracked pots 16

2. As it concerns others (without offence) We are to walk so as not to be a stumbling block our liberties. 3. As it concerns Christ (till the day of Christ) IV. Spiritual Fruit (vs. 11) Live in light of His coming. Philippians 1:11, Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. 1. Because we have been given the righteousness of Christ in our position before God. 2. We can and should practice righteous living before man. 3. How? It s by Jesus Christ John 15:5, for without me ye can do nothing. (So abide!) It s the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5) Notice the results (vs. 11) unto the glory and praise of God. Jesus said in John 15:8, Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. Matthew 5:16, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. May our lives: 1. Overflow with the Love of Christ 2. Be devoted to the things of Christ 3. Sincere and without offense until the day of Christ 4. Bear the righteous fruit of Christ All to the glory and praise of God. 17

Philippians 1:12-21 Joy In Spite of Circumstances Philippians 1:12, But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me (circumstances) have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; Philippians 1:12, But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; Paul the apostle is experiencing very difficult circumstances yet his heart overflowed with joy and rejoicing (vs. 18b) Point this passage understood by emotions as well as the mind. How? He saw the obstacles as opportunities and his disappointments as divine appointments. Notice Paul s expectations in verse 20, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. He knew that,,,, all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) God had turned Paul s prison not only into a place of prayer but also into a pulpit for the furtherance of the gospel (vs. 12) Philippians 1:12, But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; 1. The Philippians were discouraged over Paul s circumstances. 2. Paul says, I want you to understand. It helped to further the gospel, it didn t hinder it. J.A. Motyer What happened began in Acts 21:17 when the apostle set foot in Jerusalem, forewarned by the Holy Spirit that bonds and imprisonment awaited him. An entirely false accusation was leveled at him by his own people (21:28); he was nearly lynched by a religious mob, and ended up in the Roman prison, having escaped a flogging only by pleading citizenship (22:22ff.). His whole case was beset by a mockery of justice, for, though all right was on his side, he could not secure a hearing. He made the subject of unjust and unprovoked insult and shame (23:2), malicious misrepresentation (24:5; 25:6f.), and deadly plot (23:12 ff,; 25:1ff.). He kept imprisoned owing to official craving for popularity (24:37), or for money (24:26), or because of an over-punctilious façade of legalism (26:32). Even then his sufferings were not over. There came the prolonged trial of the storm at sea (Acts 27) where his life hung, as it seemed, by a thread, both because of the elements (verse 20) and because of petty officiousness (verse 42). Eventually, when he reached Rome it was far from the ambassadorial entry that he had doubtless looked for 18

(19:21). He came in the company of the condemned, bound by a chain, and destined to drag out at least two years under arrest awaiting the uncertain decision of an earthly king. Nevertheless, still imprisoned, still chained, still unheard, still uncertain, he looks back and avers, (cried), what happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. 3. Notice the things which happened What things? a. Lesson: Yet Paul was not bitter Every circumstance of life is a platform on which the transforming grace of God can be manifested in the life of the believer. b. Lesson: The righteous do suffer but God can use it for our good and His glory. Illustration: Joseph Genesis 50:20, But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. Oh! The Places You'll Go Dr. Seuss Random House, 1990 You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights. You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed. You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead. "Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest." Except when you don't. Because, sometimes, you won't. "I'm sorry to say so but, sadly, it's true that Bang-ups and Hangups can happen to you." You can get all hung up in a prickle-ly perch. And your gang will fly on. You'll be left in a Lurch. You'll come down from the Lurch with an unpleasant bump. And the chances are, then, that you'll be in a Slump. And when you're in a Slump, you're not in for much fun. 19

Un-slumping yourself is not easily done. Billy Graham, Till Armageddon Comfort and prosperity have never enriched the world as adversity had done. Out of pain and problems have come the sweetest songs, the most poignant poems, the most gripping stories. Out of suffering and tears have come the greatest spirits and the most blessed lives. Paul did not find his joy in ideal circumstances; he found his joy in winning others to Christ; if his circumstances helped to further the gospel that was all that mattered. The word furtherance means pioneer advance. Notice how the gospel first came to Philippi. God used three tools to further the gospel. I. Paul s Chains imposed restrictions (vs ) Philippians 1:13-14, So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. The same God who used Moses rod, Gideon s pitcher, David s sling and Balams donkey, used Paul s chains. Paul could have complained about his chains but instead, he consecrated himself and his chains to God, and asked God to use them for the pioneer advance of the gospel (vs. 13 bonds in Christ) 2 Timothy 2:9, I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. How did God use Paul s chains? 1. His chains gave him contact with sinners (vs. 13a) the palace is the Praetorian prison he was chained to a Roman soldier 24 hours a day. The shifts changed every six hours so Paul could witness to at least four each day [in two years he could have reached 3,000 soldiers]. Acts 28:30-31, And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him. and in all other places like what? 20

Philippians 4:21-22, Salute every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren which are with me greet you. All the saints salute you, chiefly they that are of Caesar's household. Even in prison Paul s powerful preaching, pen and prayers. Lesson: How about you? Perhaps you are chained in some way and so unable to be used by God tied to job, in the house, sick in bed. The key is the single mind Notice Paul s expectation in verse 20, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. 2. His chains gave courage to the saved (vs. 14) How? They saw his example Ephesians 6:19-20, And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. If Paul can in prison, so can I What if Paul criticized or complained? We need to be an example 2 Timothy 1:7, For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Without fear! Romans 1:16, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. II. Paul s Critics (vs ) Philippians 1:15-18, Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:the one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. 21

The many or most in verse 14 was divided into two groups, indicated by the double usage of some (vs. 15). Both preached the same message, but each group had different motives. 1. The Preachers with wrong motives a. envy it s the work of the flesh it s jealousy b. strife or wrangling or contention envy is the inward emotion, wheras strife is the outward expression. c. contension to canvass for office to get peoples support Paul s was to glorify Jesus Christ d. not sincerely not pure e. they intended to aggravate Paul - supposing to add affliction to my bonds 2. The Preachers with right motives a. goodwill Literally: that which seems good b. out of love for Paul, the lost, the Lord c. truth both the context and motivation of their message was true. Notice Paul s attitude in verse 18, I rejoice! How? Because Christ was preached many today don t The motive was wrong yet the context was right. Paul had the single mind no envy in his heart. It is a matter of historic record that the two great English evangelists, John Wesley and George Whitefield, disagreed on doctrinal matters. Both of them were very successful, preaching to thousands of people and seeing multitudes come to Christ. It is reported that somebody asked Wesley if he expected to see Whitefield in heaven, and the evangelist replied, No, I do not. Then you do think Whitefield is a converted man? Of course he is a converted man! Wesley said. But I do not expect to see him in heaven because he will be so close to the throne of God and I so far away that I will not be able to see him! Though he differed with his brother in some matters, Wesley did not have any envy in his heart, nor did he seek to oppose Whitefield s ministry. How about us? III. Paul s Crisis (vs ) Philippians 1:19-21, For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all 22

boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Because of Paul s chains Christ was known Because of Paul s chains Christ was preached Because of Paul s chains Christ was magnified Paul learned that the sufferings he had gone through allowed him to see that Jesus Christ is the one thing worthwhile in life. How about you? The things that happen unto me Are not by chance I know But because my Father s wisdom Has willed to have it so. For the furtherance of the gospel As a part of His great plan, God can use our disappointments And the weaknesses of man. Mrs. J. S. King 23

Philippians 1:20-26 The Believer s Death Benefit Philippians 1:20-26, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. Paul was in prison awaiting trial. His future was uncertain, he knew not, if he would live or die. But for Paul it made little difference whether it be by life, or by death as long Christ shall be magnified in my body, because for Paul, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Because of Paul s chains: Christ was known (vs. 13) Because of Paul s critics: Christ was preached (vs. 18) Because of Paul s crisis: Christ was magnified (vs. 20) For Paul, Christ was his source of life; his strength in sorrow, and his reward in death. Like Paul we should earnestly desire Christ to be magnified in our bodies (vs. 20) Illustration: Philippians 1:20, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. It s like: A microscope making small things big A telescope makings things far away close Notice that Paul talks about death. (vs. 21) to die is gain (vs. 23) I desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: There are three comparative adjectives in this phrase. Literally it reads, much more better in every way. 24

Heaven is far superior to earth, Because heaven was far better in every way, Paul wanted to go there. Philippians 1:22-23, But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Notice the word, desire, it s a constant inner compulsion it s the problem we face today, no desire! Frederick Langbridge pictures two men who are both in prison but are a universe apart in their thoughts in the memorable line, two men looked through the bars, one saw the mud, the other the stars. How wonderfully these words express the triumphant outlook of the believer as he faces death. For the Christian there is no fear of death. Psalms 23:4, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Not so for the unbeliever Proverbs 14:32, The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death. Psalms 116:15, Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. John Knox Live in Christ, die in Christ, and the flesh need not fear death. Paul s two-fold desire: 1. to depart (vs. 23) Philippians 1:23, For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: It s a description of death. What is death? The word depart was used four ways: 1. the unloosing of a prisoner 2. the removal of the yoke (from an ox) 3. the loosing of a ship 25

4. the breaking up of a tent. 2 Corinthians 5 Death for the believer means freedom from sin, sickness and sorrow. Revelation 21:4, And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. There is a land of pure delight, where saints immortal reign; Infinite day excludes the night, and pleasures banish pain. Isaac Watts, to be with Christ (vs. 23) Philippians 1:23, For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Where does a Christian go at death? with Christ 2 Corinthians 5:6-8, Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. There is no soul sleep or purgatory. 1 Corinthians 13:12, For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. I John 3:2, Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. Face to face with Christ, my Savior, Face to face --- what will it be? When with rapture I behold Him, Jesus Christ who died for me! Fact to face --- O blissful moment! Face to face --- to see and know; Face to face with my Redeemer, Jesus Christ who loves me so! Carrie E. Breck 26

Paul wasn t trying to escape the suffering of this life; he wanted to be with Jesus! It s where faith gives way to sight. Notice the words, which is far better. Not for the unbeliever! Nevertheless (vs. 24) Notice the change: Philippians 1:24-26, Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. It s not time to go to heaven yet, there s still work to be done. Paul was willing to postpone heaven to help others on earth. Heaven is not just our future destination; it should be a present motivation. Paul s inner desire for heaven gave way to his love for others and his calling to be a servant (Philippians 2:1-4) C.S. Lewis If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. It is because Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this one. Adoniram Judson was the first overseas missionary sent out from America. In the early nineteenth century, he and his first wife went to India and, a short while later, to Burma, where he labored for nearly four decades. After fourteen years, he had a handful of converts and had managed to write a Burmese grammar. During that time he suffered a horrible imprisonment for a year and a half and lost his wife and children to disease. Like Paul, he longed to be with the Lord, but, also like the apostle, he considered his work for Christ to be infinitely more important than his personal longings. He therefore prayed that God would allow him to live long enough to translate the entire Bible into Burmese and to establish a church there of at least one hundred believers. The Lord granted that request and also allowed him to compile Burmese-English and English-Burmese dictionaries, which became invaluable to the Christian workers, both foreign and Burmese, who followed him. He wrote, If I had not felt certain that every trial was ordered by infinite love and mercy, I could not have survived my accumulated suffering. Nearing the end of his life, Paul wrote, For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of 27

righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:6-8) He looks back over his life - For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: He looks forward - there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Paul was ready to be poured out like a drink offering. Keep your heart in heaven, and your feet on earth. 28

Philippians 1:27-30 The Steadfast Church Philippians 1:27, Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; Paul is writing to the Christian s in Philippi from a Roman jail yet, he is rejoicing (vs. 18) Philippians 1:18, But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Paul had a single mind (vs ) Philippians 1:20-21, I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. He knew that God was using his circumstances to do three things: 1. strengthen the believers fellowship in the gospel (vs. 5) 2. help in the furtherance of the gospel (vs. 12) 3. gave the church an opportunity to stand steadfast for the faith of the gospel (vs. 27) The themes in our text: vs. 27 stand fast & striving together vs. 28 your adversaries vs. 29 suffer vs. 30 conflict Paul exhorts the Philippians to remain steadfast, united, and unafraid and to regard it a privilege to be counted worthy to suffer for Christ. The believer s in Philippi were in a battle for the faith of the gospel What is the faith of the gospel? The Christian faith as revealed by God and recorded in the Bible, God s Word! Paul s warning: 29

1 Timothy 4:1, in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Timothy 4:3-4, they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Jude 3, ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Like the Christian s of Paul s day we face a hostile world that is trying to destroy the faith of the gospel. Paul gives us these admonitions explaining that there are three essentials needed for us to be steadfast in the battle. I. Consistency of holy living (vs. 27a) Philippians 1:27a, Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: Notice the context; go back to verses Philippians 1:23-36, For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. What does Paul mean by our conversation becoming the gospel of Christ? The old English word conversation means our walk, not our talk. The Greek verb Paul used comes from the word for city or citizenship (polis) found in the names Indianapolis and Minneapolis. Paul was saying, live as citizens of Heaven Philippians 3:20, For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Note: Philippi was a Roman Colony. It means we are to live in harmony with the responsibilities and blessings the gospel brings. As the people of God, we are to be living lives that are becoming of the gospel of Jesus Christ. 30

This brings to mind an important New Testament truth having to do with the Christian s two-fold relationship: 1. Positional Righteousness Romans 8:1, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, 2. Progressive (Practical) Righteousness Sanctification Our practical righteousness should come up to our positional righteousness in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 4:1, I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy (weigh the same as) of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Are you conducting yourself in a manner worthy of the gospel? in the home on the job II. Cooperation (vs. 27b) Titus 2:10, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. A story is told of an evangelist who held meetings in a town and after they were over he went to the train station to leave town. The man who sold him his train ticket intentionally gave him back more change than he was due. Upon receiving his change, the evangelist noticed the extra money and turned back to the counter and said, you gave me more change than I was suppose to receive ; giving back the extra money. The man at the counter replied, yes I know, I was in your meetings this week, and wanted to know if you practiced what you preached. People are watching us! You are writing a gospel, a chapter each day; By things that you do; by words that you say. Men read what you write, Whether faithless or true! Tell me, what is the Gospel According To You? That s a good question! Philippians 1:27b, that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; 31

As we face a hostile unbelieving world we need consistency in our walk; but also, cooperation in our work. The only problem in the Church at Philippi appears to have been an issue over unity and cooperation. The reason: To dwell in love with the saints above, Why, that will be just glory. But to live below with the saints I know, Well, that's a different story!... Philippians 2:1-4, If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Philippians 4:2, I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. Two things we need to do: 1. Stand stand fast in one spirit, with one mind or sole. Ephesians 4:1-6, I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 2. Strive striving together for the faith of the gospel. A word picture of an athlete or team - The word athlete, comes from the Greek verb translated as striving together. A team must work together for a common goal. Let s work together to get the word out. How? Prayer Bible study Serving 32

III. Courage (vs ) Giving Going Telling Supporting others getting the gospel out Philippians 1:28-30, And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me. The sequence in this passage: Christian s living righteously Seeking to win the wicked world to Christ By preaching the true gospel Will be persecuted A. Don t be terrified 2 Timothy 3:12, all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. - the word terrified was used of a horse that was spooked in a battle. B. Your adversaries (world, flesh, devil) 1. Legalistic Jews 2. Paganistic Gentiles or Romans 3. Quarreling Church members Three things to remember when you are suffering persecution: 1. Its evidence of who s lost and who s saved (vs. 28) Philippians 1:28, And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. Illustration: John Wesley, the great Methodist preacher, after not being persecuted for preaching the gospel became concerned about his spiritual condition. 33

2. Its a gift and privilege (vs. 29) Philippians 1:29, For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; Notice the two gifts: 1. To believe 2. To suffer For His sake 1 Peter 4:12-16, Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice in as much as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf." In the book of Acts when the apostles were beat up and told not to preach in the name of Jesus, what did they do? They rejoiced! Acts 5:41, And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. 3. Others have, and are suffering the same conflict (vs. 30) Philippians 1:30, Having the same conflict which ye saw in me (Acts 16), and now hear to be in me. You are not alone, you are not unique Examples: John Wycliffe The Morning Star John Huss William Tyndale Martin Luther 34
