3 INTRODUCTION GROWING OLDER ISN T THE SAME AS GROWING UP! Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ. - Ephesians 4:15 When our children were younger they took delight in measuring how they were growing up. First it was a pencil mark on a door jamb and then not long after that they began comparing their height to that of their mother. Then we began to hear them tell us that things we wanted them to do were too childish for them. Soon they had progressed to a point where they increasingly (but not always consistently) wanted to be treated like adults. That s how it should be! As parents, we delight in watching our children grow up and become responsible adults. We not only like it, we encourage it. God, our heavenly father, has the same desire for all of His children as well. He wants us to grow physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually so that in every way we enjoy the fullness of life. If you look at the baseball diamond on the preceding page, you will get a glimpse of what maturing as a Christian might look like. In many ways, that diagram is similar to the progression that we all make as we move from childhood to adolescence to being young adults to becoming adults, to being parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents. The expectation we have of ourselves, and that others have of us, change as the time passes. But how can we know that we are growing spiritually? How are we to measure our spiritual maturity? Can we even honestly say that we are as concerned or as committed to spiritual maturity as we might be to other matters like financial independence and our physical well-being? In our study of the Book of James, we have a manual on maturity. In our eight weeks together, you will discover that maturity isn t age. It s not appearance. It s not achievement and it s not academics. It s primarily a mind-set or an attitude. This book is literally a manual on how to be mature. My goal for our time together is to equip and encourage you to know the joy and the effectiveness of a mature faith. If you re my age, or older, you are well aware that as we age physically there are some things we can no longer do as well as we once did. But on the plus side, we now have experiences, relationships, resources and insights that we can use as contagious Christians. If we do that, not only will we be blessed, but others will be as well! Let the adventure begin!!! Senior Pastor 3

24 FAITH THAT WORKS HOW TO QUIT PLAYING GOD JAMES 4:11-12 "Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you -- who are you to judge your neighbor?" (vs. 11b & 12) WE'RE PLAYING GOD WHEN WE I. WHY DO WE LIKE TO JUDGE OTHERS? 1. "So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them, and yet do the same thing, do you think you will escape God's judgement?" Romans 2:3 2. "Gossip is so tasty! How we love to swallow it!" Proverbs 26:22 II. WHY SHOULD I NOT JUDGE OTHERS? IT IS "Brothers do not slander... anyone who speaks against his brother or judges his brother IT IS "Anyone who... judges, speaks against the law..." James 2:13 Parable of Unforgiving Servant - Matthew 18:21-35 NOTES 25

Proverbs 16:1 "We should make plans -- counting on God to direct us." Proverbs 16:9 II. MISTAKE #2: "Why, you don't even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil." (vs. 14 & 16) Psalm 39:4-6; Psalm 102:3, 11; Job 4:7,9; Psalm 103:15 "Come," each one cries, "... Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even better!" Live one day at a time." Matthew 6:34 III. MISTAKE #3: "Anyone then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it sins." (vs. 17) THE SOLUTION: "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, `Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow' when you now have it with you." Proverbs 3:27-28 Luke 12:16-20 A foolish man "RIGHT NOW God is ready to welcome you. TODAY He is ready to save you! 2 Corinthians 6:2 26

RIGHT ALLOCATION: "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." Proverbs 21:5 The key: 4. RIGHT APPLICATION: "It is possible to give away and become richer! It is also possible to hold on too tightly and lose everything. Yes the generous man shall be rich. By watering others, he waters himself." Luke 16:9 "On every Sunday, put aside something from what you have earned during the week, and use it for the offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you to earn." 1 Corinthians 16:2 NOTES 29

30 FAITH THAT WORKS HOW TO DEVELOP PATIENCE JAMES 5:7-12 Learning to wait is a hard lesson to learn in life. James shows us when, why, and how to develop patience. I. WHEN TO BE PATIENT WHEN "Be patient then brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is..." (vs. 7) WHEN "As an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord." (vs 10) WHEN "You have heard of Job's perseverance..." (vs. 11) II. I wait expectantly, trusting God to help, for He has promised." Psalm 130:5 "The Lord says... No one who waits for my help will be disappointed." Isaiah 49:23 30

31 HOW TO DEVELOP PATIENCE (continued) 2. WAIT (vs. 9) "It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord." Lamentations 3:26 "These things won't happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!" Habakkuk 2:3 3. WAIT (vs. 11b) "I will wait confidently for God..." Micah 7:7 "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act." If he has sinned, he will be forgiven." (vs ) 3 KINDS OF SICKNESS ATTITUDES TOWARD HEALING WHEN AM I "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."
