1 September 2018 As the Body of Christ we are called and sent to love and serve the world A Word From Pastor Caroline Happy Birthday, Christ the King! When Pastor Brad turned 40, I hosted a giant backyard surprise party. He came home from officiating a wedding, clicked the garage door opener, and watched in awe as he saw hundreds of feet then (as the garage door continued to rise) legs and arms then the smiling faces of family and friends yelling surprise! It was a grand day. Although the upcoming 50 th birthday party for Christ the King is not a surprise, it will be equally as grand. On Saturday, September 8 at Clay Church/Firehouse Campus, enjoy all the familiar trappings of a birthday party: balloons, cupcakes, pictures from the past, pictures taken to commemorate the moment, a gift to and from the congregation; there is even a crossword puzzle! It will be an evening to remember a celebration of the life Christ the King has lived up to this point and a look toward the life that is yet to come. What will the next 50 years hold? At the ripe old age of 50 (or at the tender young age of 50, depending on whether you re looking at it from above or below), Christ the King is not slowing down or coasting into retirement. If there s any doubt about this, consider the next day s schedule! After celebrating in grand style on Saturday night, Sunday morning we rise to the next 50 years in the following fashion: Sunday, September 9 8:15 am Traditional Worship 9:30 am Contemporary Worship 9:30 am Adult Study in 502/504 10:30 am Sunday School begins for 2 year-olds through 12 th graders: meet your teachers and classmates! 10:50 am GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY for the new canopy. Meet outside the main entrance (weather permitting). 11:15 am Traditional Worship 12:30 pm 2/4/8/ CMG Let s Go event (lunch provided, see page 2 for more information) 5 7 pm Youth Orientation for youth in 6 th 12 th grades and their parents (dinner provided, see page 4 for more information) So let s party on Saturday, September 8! Then let s come together on Sunday, September 9 and begin the next 50 years of hearing the good news, being strengthened and fed for the days ahead, and loving and serving the world. That s the life of Christ the King. Blessings as always, Pastor Caroline Contents Pastor s Reflection 2/4/8 CMG Let s Go! CMG (continued) Mission Calendar God s Work. 2 2 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 2/4/8 CMG Let s Go! Christ the King is one of 30 congregations in the state of Indiana accepted into a community ministry grant (CMG) program through the Center for Congregations. The grant process will help us discern what God is doing right here and right now and how we as CtK might be part of it in partnership with our surrounding community. During this event, people will begin connecting the assets worshippers identified on August 12 with a tangible way to support God s dream for our community. Lunch will be provided! CtK s Community Ministry Grant process is picking up speed. In fact, we are getting ready to step on the accelerator! If you recall, the Center for Congregations process that we are following is: Collaborative, Asset-Based and Relational CAR! So far we have been working on determining the assets of our members, our church and the community around us. We asked for your input on these assets during Pastor Caroline s sermon the weekend of August 12 th. We also wanted to know what you think God s dreams are for our community. We received a lot of interesting input that weekend. See the charts below showing the various themes that rose to the surface. The Stirring Team is excited to talk about your input at our next event, the CMG Let s Go! gathering in Van Oort Hall at 12:30 PM on Sunday, September 9 th (lunch will be provided). We will delve deeper into the input received at the August 12 th weekend services.

3 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 3 The event will be fun and Relational as we learn more about each other and enjoy each other s company. We need at least 64 people from the congregation to attend the event for this to work. Hopefully more will attend. Please sign up for the CMG Let s Go! event at the CMG display in the narthex. We need you to keep this journey going! The September 9th event will definitely be Collaborative as we will all participate in an intriguing process involving group discussions of 2, then 4 and then 8 people. The idea is that we will gradually come closer to understanding the community ministry God has been dreaming for CtK and our community to undertake together. Now, some of you may be asking yourselves, Where is this all going? Why can t we get more concrete information to help us better understand what this CMG journey really is? Well, to be truthful, the Stirring Team has been wrestling with the same questions. The Center for Congregations has given us some examples from other churches that have taken this journey already. Here is one. A church created a tutoring center for kids after school. They had a need in their community to improve educational outcomes of their kids. The church had a number of current and retired educators individual assets. They had rooms in their church that were not being used congregational assets. There were passionate and concerned teachers and school administrators that really wanted their kids to succeed community assets. They all worked with each other for the kids. They encouraged and celebrated each child as they improved their grades. The kids gained confidence and succeeded at higher and higher rates. There was a decline in negative activity involving the kids after school. There were strong relationships built as everyone collaborated and used their combined assets in this endeavor. One of God s dreams for that community became reality! As Pastor Brad stated in his August 19 th sermon, God abided with them and the church and community and kids abided with each other. Stay tuned! Tom Jordan, CMG Committee Member

12 12 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church ANGEL HELPERS The other day I was thinking about two times I have fallen. The first time was in 2010 when I tripped over a power cord in my doctor s office. It seemed as though it took forever from the time I tripped to the time I landed on the floor. Thankfully, there were no injuries. The second time was in Amanda had recently been transferred from Los Angeles to Chicago and she was so pleased to be closer to home. We were very excited about her move, too. Jim hadn t retired yet, so he was happy to visit on weekends, and I was able to stay during the week. My family knows how much I love to organize so if they have cupboards, closets or drawers that need to be put in order, I m their person. (Jim and I helped my sister pack out her house in Glen Ellyn, while her husband was working. They put a lot of things in storage prior to putting their house on the market. In my book this is major, big time fun, because they had three levels to work with. Anyway, you get the idea of one of the things that I call fun, but most people would not.) Returning to Amanda s move, there were many things to keep me busy while she was at work during the day. Holding a large storage box and moving forward to put it into a walk-in closet, I missed seeing a second box on the floor in front of me. Of course I tripped and fell onto the second box. It felt as though I was moving in slow motion. There was plenty of time for me to assess the situation and decide how to land. Fortunately I wasn t hurt. Years earlier, I read a book about angels that said when you experience a time lapse or a slow motion experience, angels may be at work. During both incidents, I believe angels slowed my falls. Here are two incidents my sister Dinah shared with me. In 2013, she was carrying a dish to share at a neighbor s party when she caught her foot on their door sill and fell. She described the experience as feeling like she was moving through Jello. She felt there was time for decision-making that shouldn t have been there. She felt strongly that angels must have slowed her falls. The second incident happened in 2017, shortly after she and her husband Rick moved to North Carolina. She was holding the door open for Rick and their friend Peggy to bring some furniture in. In the process, her shoe caught on the carpet pad and she started falling backwards onto the foyer rug. She had time to figure out how to land. Peggy said to her, I ve never seen anyone fall so slowly. That s the hand of God. Dinah felt God had sent angels to protect her, and she was not hurt. How many times in each of our lives have we experienced unusual events? And how many times have we responded by saying: Boy, was I lucky! or This must be my lucky day! or Someone must be watching over me! Was it really only about luck? Who was that someone you thought was watching over you? Allow the possibility that it was God whose legions of angels are his to dispatch wherever he sees a need. For he shall give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone. (Psalm 91: 11-12) See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way. (Exodus 23:20) IN AND THROUGH HIM, DIANE HUWALDT
