1 Holston Valley Baptist Association Mission-Aider Volume 132 June 2016 Issue 9 History of Vacation Bible School (You Gotta Know Where You Came From to Know Where You Are Going) One of the earliest accounts of Vacation Bible School in the U.S. was in 1898, when Mrs. Walker Aylette Hawes noted a rapid increase in the number of immigrant children populating the slums of New York City s East Side. With her heart to reach these children with the Gospel, Mrs. Hawes structured her program around worship, music, scripture memorization, drawing, cooking, games and crafts. When looking around the city for a place to house her summer event, she did not host the event in a church but rented the only place available at the time, a saloon. The school caught on and by 1901, Mrs. Hawes oversaw seven separate schools prior to her retirement. She called the event: Everyday Bible School. Fast Forward a hundred plus years and we continue to see Vacation Bible Schools happening all across the world teaching the Gospel to children in many different locations and in many different languages. The missional purpose has been the same all along to bring the Gospel to children. While it is perfectly appropriate to hold Vacation Bible School within the walls of our church buildings, maybe we can also consider returning VBS to its roots and take it back to the street and to the parks, to the highway and to the hedges. Outreach and Ministry Ideas (Get Out of the House) Arm church members with window cleaner and paper towels and converge on a drive thru at a local restaurant. The fast food restaurants now have the special parking reserved for those waiting on their food. Invite them to park in this spot while getting windows cleaned so as not to hold up the line in the drive-thru. Clean the front window of the car and leave a note saying something like letting the Love of God SHINE through. You don t even have to give credit to your group because it s not meant to be about you anyway. NOTE: Make sure and get permission from the management. Go to the local grocery store or Dollar Store and set up a tent and offer free lemonade and/or bottled water. Have tracts and brochures about your church available. Do some Face Painting or other easy activity. NOTE: Make sure and get permission from the management. Many elderly ladies enjoy flowers and may not be able to weed flower beds or make new flower beds. Visit with them and spend the day enjoying the beauty of fellowship and leaving the beauty of flowers!

2 Page 2 Mission-Aider Hawkins County Pregnancy HELP Center NEWS! This year is really flying by and it is hard to believe we are in June!! School is out and VBS is right around the corner. In a recent meeting about Backyard Bible Club, I heard the statistic that on average traditional VBS in the church setting reaches 10% or less of the unchurched. The pregnancy center ministry is trying to combat that statistic. On average at a Promise class meeting, the population we reach that are unchurched is 67.50%. One of the ways we are going to try to beat this statistic this summer is Wonderful Wacky Wednesdays. On Wednesdays in June and July here at the HVBA office and pregnancy center ministry we will be providing all the kids around us and from the pregnancy center ministry to come together for a fun time of science, Bible story, and snack. I am excited about this time. I am praying for this time and all of those who will be helping and in attendance. I pray God will be made real to those who are here. I pray lives are changed through telling and sharing His message of truth, forgiveness and grace. Please be in prayer for this time and those attending. If you would like to help in some way, please call me at the office at On July 10th the Mission Team from First Baptist Church, Forest Park, Georgia will be here doing a VBS kickoff at the Rogersville City Park. Then July 11th 14th, we will be having VBS here at the office. Last year was a great success with an average of 45 for the week. I am praying for this year. God is working and moving in this ministry. We are allowed the amazing opportunity of being used as His instruments in sharing the Gospel and God s love!! I cannot wait to share about Jesus and the Father!!! Please cover these days and times in prayer. Thanks to all those who took time to attend the volunteer training sessions. I am looking forward to working and sharing in the work of this ministry with you. If you have any questions about any of the summer events or how you can help, please send me an at hcphrog@gmail.com or call the office at In Christ Service, Amanda Vaughn FAMILY FEATURES Rev. Tommy Seals has made the transition from Bi-vocational to Full Vocational Pastor at Hickory Cove in Rogersville. His first Sunday as Full-Vocational Pastor was May 1. Many of our churches will be involved in mission trips this summer. Please share your news with the HVBA office so we can share with all the churches of our association of how the Lord has worked through you this summer.

3 Volume 132 Issue 9 Page 3 Church Revitalization (From Pastor Steve McKinney of Big Creek) We have set June 26th as a special Commitment Day at Big Creek. We will be having a wedding, Baptism and dinner on the ground all-inclusive in one day. After a wedding, there will be two children, a mother, and a newly-wed couple baptized together. The couple has asked for the Lord to receive the Glory of the day by offering an opportunity for anyone present at the event to accept Christ and be baptized as well. Our church for over two years has been praying for growth of new family units, and God has answered our prayers. Most recently there have been three family units consisting of three couples and five children newly attending. The visiting children often bring their friends as well. This brings such freshness and diversity to our church. Like many, we easily grow complacent with our surroundings, and with that our expectations can become stagnant as well. It is truly a blessing to see God answer prayers and bring newness to the church family, and most importantly, additions to the Kingdom of God. In this age we live, families can be broken, lives can be in pieces, and sometimes hearts be hardened, but thanks be to a gracious God that is in the business of restoration and life eternal. We thank God for hearing our prayers at Big Creek. We can t wait to see what is next for us! Associational RA Race is a Big Success The HVBA RA Race was a big success. Everyone had a good time.
