1 First Presbyterian Church For Christ in the Heart of Charlotte Founded in 1821 Order of Worship Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost August 26, a.m. You are invited to use the time before the service to prepare your heart and mind for worship. In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude Voluntary and Trumpet Tune in D Major William Boyce Words of Welcome *Call to Worship Adoration The Reverend Katherine Kerr Come from east and west, north and south! From everywhere God has placed us, with everything God has given us, as the people God made us we come. Come, receive again the gift of grace! Not for owning, not for boasting, but for celebrating we come. Come, discover again the way that leads to life! Remembering who we are, seeking who we are yet to be we come. *Hymn No. 620 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven lauda anima

2 Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. The Call to Worship is written by the Rev. Teri Peterson and is used with permission. We believe that God put the wiggle in children, and all are welcome in worship regardless of their ability to sit still. If you d like to step out of the sanctuary with your child, please feel free to visit the chapel (to the right of the sanctuary) where the service is streaming. Leo is the son of Kelly and Rob St. Louis. The rosebud in the sanctuary celebrates the birth of Oliver Graham Pearl, son of Melanie and Andrew Pearl. First Church does not meet during the summer. Children in kindergarten and older are encouraged to participate in the full worship service, and care for younger children is available in the nursery. The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9 this morning and streamed live at Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Confession The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke God of wisdom and growth, we confess to you that we can be difficult students. We prefer the role of teacher, and we like being in charge, giving assignments, and correcting answers. When we don t know the answer, we admit to making things up instead of saying, I don t know. We admit that we do not always take kindly to correction and that we believe others need more discipline than we do. Give us the humility to admit when we need instruction, and open our hearts and minds to be receptive to the wisdom of the teachers in our lives. In silent prayer, let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. Assurance of Pardon Friends, believe the good news. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Sacrament of Baptism Sacrament of Baptism Leo Thomas St. Louis *Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation Scripture Matthew 4:18-22 pew Bible pg. 3 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Anthem The Call Z. Randall Stroope Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life; such a Way, as gives us breath, such a Truth, as ends all strife, such a Life, as killeth death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength; such a Light, as shows a feast, such a Feast, as mends in length, such a Strength as makes His guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart; such a Joy, as none can move, such a Love, as none can part, such a Heart, as joys in love. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart; Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life. Scripture Deuteronomy 6:20-25 pew Bible pg. 16 Sermon Back to School: The Gift of Teachers The Reverend Pen Peery

3 A Prayer for Schools Response The Reverend Katherine Kerr Holy God in whom we live and move and have our very being, Thank you... for the gift of your light in the children among us, for your promise to know their greatest joys and their deepest sorrow, for your deep and abiding love. Teach us... our responsibility towards your children. Open our hearts and minds to the needs which we must meet, to gaps that we must fill, to the doors that we must open, the wisdom that we must impart. Direct us... in paths of righteousness as we make decisions about our schools about work and worth, about salary and program support, about the provision of food and transportation and support services. Guide us... to engage, advocate, listen, ask and act. We pray for children whose brains are dancing with hope and curiosity; for children for whom learning is made difficult because of barriers rooted in language, inequity, or challenges of mind and body and medication; for children who arrive fragile, hungry, scared, sad or broken; for children whose legs cannot navigate the stairs of the school bus or the playground or the building; for children who are nourished by play and beautiful music and the opportunity to create beautiful things; for children for whom school is the only happy and safe place; for all teachers, bus drivers, custodians, administrators, nutrition specialists, counselors, psychologists, nurses, and volunteers who give all that they have knowing that more is needed. Inspire in us the courage to advocate, the wisdom to insist on what is right and good, and the compassion to work for wholeness for all children and all who serve them. Amen. Stewardship of Life Habitat for Humanity Presentation of Tithes and Offerings John Tate Offertory Anthem The Prayer of St. Francis arr. René Clausen *Doxology (Hymn No. 606) old hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. *Prayer of Dedication and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Sending Forth *Hymn No. 543 God, Be the Love to Search and Keep Me green tyler *Charge and Benediction *Benediction Response Amen Peter Lutkin Postlude Fugue in C Major Dietrich Buxtehude The Prayer for Schools is a collaboration of PC(USA) churches in Charlotte. This version was edited by the Rev. Dr. Robert Henderson. The sympathy of the congregation is expressed to Janie Levinson on the death of her mother, Jane L. Timmons. Part of our offering today goes to the Ten-Cents-A-Meal program, a hunger relief and at-risk youth ministry of the Presbytery of Charlotte. Children and families will pass baskets after the offering plates to collect this offering. The Prayer of St. Francis Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring love. Where there is injury, help me to pardon. Where there is doubt, let me bring faith. Where there is despair, let me bring love. Let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, let me bring light. Where there is sorrow, let me bring joy. O Lord, master divine, grant that I not so much seek to be consoled, as to console, as to understand; to love. For it is in giving that we receive, and in pardoning that we are pardoned. For in dying we are born to eternal life. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Amen. A time of personal prayer is offered following the service. If you would like to pray with a pastor and a member of our prayer team, please meet them in the chapel following the service. * Please stand if you are able.

5 *Hymn No Praise, my soul, the God of heaven; glad of heart your carols raise; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, should sing God s praise? Praise the Maker all your days! 2 Praise God for the grace and favor shown our forebears in distress; God is still the same forever, slow to chide, and swift to bless. Sing our Maker s faithfulness! Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven 3 Like a loving parent caring, God knows well our feeble frame, gladly all our burdens bearing, still to countless years the same. All within me, praise God s name! 4 Angels, teach us adoration; you behold God face to face. Sun and moon and all creation, dwellers all in time and space: Praise with us the God of grace! *Hymn No. 543 God, Be the Love to Search and Keep Me 1 God, be the love to search and keep me; God, be the prayer to move my voice; God, be the strength to now uphold me: 2 Bind to myself the Name of Holy, great cloud of witnesses enfold; prophets, apostles, angels witness: 4 Walking behind to hem my journey, going ahead to light my way, and from beneath, above, and all ways: 5 Christ in the eyes of all who see me, Christ in the ears that hear my voice, Christ in the hearts of all who know me: 3 Brightness of sun and glow of moonlight, flashing of lightning, strength of wind, depth of the sea to soil of planet:
