PowerPlus Breakout Groups 2018 Day 2 of Camp Humbled A word about these activities: Please feel free to choose the activity below that best fits your students. You may choose one or more activities to do each day, depending on time. If one option goes nowhere, and you have time left, move on to another activity and try it. Option One (2 Large Groups): Humility Students learned today that we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. We discovered that the world exists for a reason, that God made people in his image, but that people are broken by sin. God desires a relationship with every person through his Son Jesus, and moves to us through Jesus to rescue us and restore with us right relationships. This activity, therefore, is designed to help your students think about and articulate what it looks like to humble ourselves before the God who goes to such lengths to save us. Through this activity students will discuss how true humility helps us to enter into a relationship with God through Jesus. Leader Preparation: You will need to make note of the main point discussed earlier in the Power Group Bible Study. The main point was: we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. Also, think ahead of time of a guy and a girl who can lead your two groups. The purpose of this activity is to allow your students to articulate how a relationship with God grows from true humility. Leader says: today we learned that we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. We learned that we experience life with God through a relationship with Jesus. Having a relationship with God through Jesus means we have come to understand our own need for God, that we are sinful. It also means that we are made by God for a right relationship with him, that we can rest in God s grace, that we can each meet Jesus and follow Jesus in our lives. Understanding true humility that God made us in his image but that we are broken by sin, and we therefore need God to rescue us true humility paves the path to surrendering our lives to Jesus. So, we are going to participate in a humble brag competition. We will have a guys group and a girls group. Each group will get ten minutes to come up with a skit where everyone speaks to each other in humble brags. Then, we will perform our humble brag skits for everyone and vote on the funniest lines. Afterward we will talk about the difference between humble bragging and true humility. Leader assigns a guy group and a girl s group student leader. Answer any questions for clarification. 1

Leader Explains: Now that I ve assigned the Groups I m going to give you about 10 minutes to come up with your humble brag skits. After 10 minutes we ll come back together. We ll have each group show us their skit. Afterwards we ll discuss each skit all together. Leader allows 10 minutes for groups to come up with their skits. After students have had a chance to plan, call them back together and perform the skits. After the skits, leaders asks the following questions for discussion: Ok, so what was the funniest line/s from the girl s group? How about the guy group? Why is a humble brag not really humble? Why do you think we say things like this? Why is it important for us to humble ourselves before God? How does humility help us to surrender our lives to Jesus as our Lord? Has anyone here surrendered their life to Jesus as Lord? Would you like to share why you gave your life to Jesus? (leader may need to explain the Gospel call to salvation) 2

Option Two (Small Groups): Reverence Students learned today that we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. True humility involves reverence for God. Biblical reverence is a mixture of awe and healthy fear of a God who not only creates us but also has the power to overcome death in resurrection life. Reverence is not fear of punishment. It is instead a healthy respect for who God is coupled with a deep trust in God s love for us. Therefore, this activity will help students think about and articulate God s nature as all-powerful and also as perfectly loving. Leader Preparation: You will need to make note of the main point discussed earlier in the Power Group Bible Study. The main point was: we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. Also, think ahead of time regarding how many small groups you will need, and student leaders for the groups. The purpose of this activity is to allow your students to articulate reverence for God awe at God s power and trust in God s love. Leader says: today we learned that we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. So, we are going to break up into small groups. I am going to assign half our groups the topic of God s power. The other half of our small groups I am going to assign the topic of God s love. Every group will make a top ten list of either: 1) the top ten ways God shows he is all powerful, or 2) the top ten ways God shows his love for us. Each small group will have a student leader to facilitate the discussion. So, here are your instructions: 1. Get into your groups. 2. Small group leaders, ask for ideas about either: a. The top ten ways God shows he is all-powerful. b. The top ten ways God shows he is all loving. 3. Write down your list. 4. When you re finished, come back together in a large group for discussion. 5. You ll have ten minutes to make your top ten lists. Allow students 10 minutes to make their top ten lists Questions for discussion: Who wants to share their top ten list? 3

Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss What have we heard over and over again about God s power? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss What have we heard over and over again about God s love? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss Why is it important that God is both all-powerful and perfectly loving? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss What are some ways we can show a healthy reverence for God in our lives personally? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss Leader closes in prayer 4

Option Three (Individual): Forgiveness Students learned today that we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. We discovered that people are made for right relationship with God but we are also sinful. All people choose sin, we choose to reject God. The good news of the Gospel is that God chooses us in Christ. Because of the cross and the resurrection, we by God s grace can all have a right relationship with God. What does it look like to humble ourselves before this God, to receive forgiveness, and to live with God in a personal relationship? Well, it looks like the steps to confession and repentance: 1. First, rest in the promise of forgiveness. 2. Second, say the same thing about your sin that God does. 3. Third, turn to Jesus. Ask for accountability, or help. Know that God desires to grant forgiveness. Confess, or, say the same thing about your sin that God does. Repent, or, turn to Jesus. This activity is designed to help your students think about and articulate both the initial change and the ongoing change that God does in us in each of these areas. Leader Preparation: You will need to familiarize yourself with the focal passage for today s Power Group Bible Study in Psalm 119: You will also need to provide copies of the Forgiveness handout for each of your students. Students will also need their student book, Bible, and a pen or pencil. Leader allows minutes for students to go through the activity. After students have had a chance to complete the activity, call them back together for the following discussion questions: Would anyone like to share their Forgiveness picture? If so, how did you depict how God changed your heart through forgiveness? Why did you draw it that way? What does it mean to confess our sin? Is this something that happens only in the past when we give our lives to God, or is this ongoing? Why or why not? How did you say you would grow in your relationship with God? Why is it important to grow in our relationship with God throughout our lives? 5

Who will hold you accountable? What does it mean, and what does it look like, to help hold each other accountable? Leader closes in prayer. 6

PowerPlus Breakout Groups 2018 Day 3 of Camp Grace A word about these activities: Please feel free to choose the activity below that best fits your students. You may choose one or more activities to do each day, depending on time. If one option goes nowhere, and you have time left, move on to another activity and try it. Option One (Large Group): Wired for Worship Students learned today that salvation is by grace through faith. God s Word teaches us that we are wired, or created, for worship; but we all choose to worship ourselves rather than God. We all must learn to turn from self-worship to God-worship. We can turn to God in worship by naming our deceitful ways, crying out to God, and trusting that God is listening. Students learned that when we, like the psalmist, recognize God for who God is, we in turn more fully understand who we are before God. Worship is integral to growing in a relationship with God because we are created for this purpose, to recognize God and yield our lives to him. This activity, therefore, is designed to help students think about and articulate that they are wired for worship. Worship recognizes God for who he is, and reminds us of who we are. Leader Preparation: This activity begins with discussion questions, before moving into a time of worship through singing. It is a good idea to consider one or two worship songs your group knows by heart to lead them in as part of this activity. If you have a student or leader who plays the guitar you can prepare them to help lead the songs in this activity. Otherwise, singing without instruments is fine! NOTE: If your group knows Chris Tomlin s Made to Worship, it is recommended you sing this song for this activity. The lyrics to Tomlin s song express the underlying theological foundation that your group will discuss in this activity. Leader says: We are going to stay together for this activity. Today we re going to talk a little bit together about how we are wired for worship, and then we re going to worship God together for a few minutes. So, let s all sit together in a circle and talk a little about worship. Worship is something we talk about and practice together as the church quite a bit. But what is worship? 7

Begin by discussing the following questions as one large group: How would you define worship? (note: a good working definition of worship is: our response to God for who God is and what God has done. We can respond to God with our thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions. ). We learned that turning from self-worship to God-worship involves naming our deceitful ways. Sometimes we call this confession. Why do you think it s important to confess our sins as a part of worship? Part of worship also involves crying out to God. What does that mean? Why is that a part of worship? Why is it important to know that we can trust God is listening to us? How does worship remind us of who God is? How does worship remind us of who we are? Why is it important to remember that we are wired for worship? What does that mean for our lives personally? What does that mean for our lives together as the church? Leader says: now that we ve talked about worship, let s practice it together. Worship is our response to God for who God is and what God has done. We can respond to God with our thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions. So, let s sing together one or two worship songs. As we sing, I want you to think about how the words you are singing represent your life s response to God. You are recognizing God for who God is and offering yourself to God. So, let s sing to God together. 8

Group sings a worship song together (Chris Tomlin s Made for Worship is suggested). After singing, leader says: When we gather tonight for worship let s remember that we are wired for worship. We are made to worship God, to respond to God for who God is and what God has done for us in Christ. End activity in prayer. 9

Option Two (split genders): Grace Students learned today that grace is the free gift of God s self. God gives grace in three big ways: 1) in creating life, 2) in sustaining life, and 3) in saving life. All of life is a gift of grace. All people are in need of God s grace, we are lost in our sin without it. In this activity, students will split into a girl s group and a guy s group. Each group will spend time sharing how God has shown them grace as Creator, Sustainer, and Savior of our lives. Leader preparation: Split your students into two groups, divided by gender, or multiple groups of guys and girls, if there are too many. Have them sit together in a circle. Assign an adult or older student leader to each gender group to guide the activity. Leader Says: We will be doing an activity that will help us articulate that God gives grace as our Creator, Sustainer, and Savior. In our Power Group Bible study today we learned that grace is the free gift of God s self. Everyone will have a chance to share with your group how God has shown you grace as the Creator, how God has shown you grace as the Sustainer (that means that God keeps taking care of you throughout your life), and also how God has shown you grace as the Savior. You will take turns filling in the blank of a statement like, God has shown me grace as the Creator by giving me the gift of, and then we will fill in the blank. For example, you could say, God has shown me grace as the Creator by giving me the gift of oxygen. Or, God has shown me grace as the Creator by giving me the gift of sight. I will start, and then we will move around the circle to my left. Everyone will get a chance to complete the sentence. Don t worry about trying to say something profound, say whatever comes to mind. We ll each have a chance to share how God has shown us grace as the Creator, Sustainer, and Savior. 1. God has shown me grace as the Creator by giving me the gift of. 2. God has shown me grace as the Sustainer of life by giving me the gift of. 3. God has shown me grace as the Savior by giving me the gift of. Start the activity After everyone has had a chance to complete the sentences, try it again if needed. When finished, the leader says: Why is grace central to experiencing life with God? Is grace something we deserve, or can earn? 10

How does God demonstrate his grace in salvation for us? What is our response to grace? How does God desire us to respond to the gift of himself? End activity in prayer. 11

Option Three (individual): Faith & Faithfulness Students learned today that salvation is by grace through faith. Faith is our response of yes to God. Faith, or trust, is the human response to God. Students also learned that faith and faithfulness are two sides of the same coin of discipleship. Faith is trust in God, resting in God s grace. Faithfulness is the living of this trust, stepping into life in light of grace. This activity, therefore, is designed to help students reflect upon faith and faithfulness in their personal relationship with Jesus. Leader Preparation: You will need to familiarize yourself with the primary point from today s Power Group Bible study: salvation is by grace through faith. As well, you will need a copy of the handout 3 Questions. Provide a copy of this handout for each student to have their own. You will need to remind students to have a pen or pencil, and their Bible for this activity. Leader Says: In just a moment I m going to give you a copy of the Faith & Faithfulness handout. You will need to take the handout, your Bible, and a pen or pencil and find a quiet spot by yourself near our Church Group area. Take about 15 minutes to follow the instructions on the Faith & Faithfulness handout reflecting personally on what God s Word says to you. When we are finished we will come back together for a time of discussion. Leader distributes handouts and allows students 15 minutes to participate in the activity. After 15 minutes, call students back together for discussion questions. Questions to discuss: What do you think the apostle Paul meant when he said that, now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him (Romans 6:8)? What does it mean to trust in God s grace through Jesus? What does it mean to live faithfully for Jesus with your whole life? What word or phrase stood out to you in your reading? Why do you think that word or phrase stood out to you? 12

What did this passage call you to do or to be today? Leader closes activity in prayer. 13

PowerPlus Breakout Groups 2018 Day 4 of Camp Faithfulness A word about these activities: Please feel free to choose the activity below that best fits your students. You may choose one or more activities to do each day, depending on time. If one option goes nowhere, and you have time left, move on to another activity and try it. Option One (Small groups): ACTS of Prayer Students learned today that faithfulness is a life focused on God s presence with us and purposes for us. And we practice such faithfulness in the ordinary circumstances of our lives through an intimate relationship with God. We learned in today s lesson that prayer is one way we cultivate a relationship with God. Today students learned about simple prayer. There are many ways to pray to turn our attention and affection to God s presence with us. This activity is designed to help your students grow comfortable voicing different aspects of prayer to God while in a group of their peers. Leader Preparation: Leaders will need to familiarize themselves with the Power Group Bible study for today. As well, provide enough handouts of the ACTS of Prayer activity for your small groups. Leader Says: In a moment we re going to break into groups of 5 to 7 students each. In your group you are going to take turns saying out loud a group prayer to God. You ll pray through the ACTS of prayer together. ACTS stands for: A: Adoration (praise) C: Confession (admitting our sin) T: Thanksgiving (thanking God for what he s done in our lives) S: Supplication (asking God to work in our lives, to help us or others) You will choose a group leader who will guide your small group through the ACTS of prayer. The group leader will start with Adoration by voicing out loud a short word or phrase that is a praise of God. The group leader will say something like: God is great. After that, anyone in the group can chime in. Try not to pause. Say as many praises as you can think of. Everyone gets to jump in. After you ve gone round and round with praise, the group leader will then move on to confession. The group leader will say something like, Forgive us for our selfishness. Then, others will chime in. You get the idea. After your group has moved through the ACTS of prayer we ll come back together to talk about the exercise. Allow students to break into groups and practice the ACTS of prayer. Your sponsors may need to walk around and help the students if they get stuck or nervous to pray out loud. 14

Questions for Discussion: What are your initial thoughts or reactions to this prayer exercise? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss Did you get nervous praying out loud in front of others? As you kept praying did it get easier? Why or why not? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss What does ACTS stand for again? Why are each of these important parts of prayer? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss Why is it important to pray regularly? What are some ways you have practiced prayer on your own? Allow time for all who wish to share and discuss Leader closes in prayer 15

Option Two (Individual): God s Purpose for Me Students learned today that faithfulness is a life focused on God s presence with us and purposes for us. And we practice such faithfulness in the ordinary circumstances of our lives through an intimate relationship with God. One of the primary ways that we learn to focus our lives on Jesus is to center our life on God s Word. God s Word teaches us God s purposes for us. This activity, therefore, is designed to help students learn to read the Bible on their own, and to discover God s big purpose for every person. Leader Preparation: You will need to familiarize yourself with the primary point from today s Power Group Bible study: faithfulness is a life focused on God s presence with us and purposes for us. As well, you will need a copy of the handout God s Purpose for Me. Provide a copy of this handout for each student to have their own. You will need to remind students to have a pen or pencil, and their Bible for this activity. Leader Says: In just a moment I m going to give you a copy of the God s Purpose for Me handout. You will need to take the handout, your Bible, and a pen or pencil and find a quiet spot by yourself near our Church Group area. Take about 15 minutes to follow the instructions on the handout reflecting personally on what God s purposes for your life. When we are finished we will come back together for a time of discussion. Leader distributes handouts and allows students 15 minutes to participate in the activity. After 15 minutes, call students back together for discussion questions. Leader Says: After reading Saul s story in Acts 9, what would you say was the purpose of Saul s life before he met Jesus? How did Saul s life change after he met Jesus? If like Saul you were to surrender to Jesus as Lord, how would your life purpose change? Would anyone here like to share how their life purpose has changed since they surrendered to Jesus as Lord? 16

Has anyone here never surrendered their life to Jesus as Lord, and wants to know more about how to do that? After discussion, leader closes in prayer 17

Option Three (solo): The Lord s Prayer Students learned today that faithfulness is a life focused on God s presence with us and purposes for us. This breakout group activity is designed to help your students think about and articulate how the Lord s Prayer orients our every day lives around Christ s intimate presence with us. Leader preparation: You will need to familiarize yourself with the primary point from today s Power Group Bible study: faithfulness is a life focused on God s presence with us and purposes for us. As well, you will need a copy of the handout The Lord s Prayer. Provide a copy of this handout for each student to have their own. You will need to remind students to have a pen or pencil, and their Bible for this activity. Leader says: In a moment we re all going to find a spot by ourselves somewhere close to our church group area. I want you to take your bible, student book, and a pen or pencil. You ll also need this handout on The Lord s Prayer handout. We re going to spend some time alone with God, praying through and thinking on how the Lord s Prayer helps us to experience God s presence with us. You ll have about 15 minutes, and then we ll come back together to talk about our experience. Allow students to find a spot by themselves. Allow minutes for the activity. When time has elapsed, call everyone back together for the following discussion questions. Leader says: What are your initial thoughts about this activity? Was it easy, difficult? Why? Does anyone want to share what they wrote in their blanks? Why is it important that God is present with us during normal life circumstances? How does approaching the Lord s Prayer in this way change the way we view prayer? 18

Why is prayer so important for us in a personal relationship with God? Leader closes this activity in prayer. 19

Forgiveness Breakout Groups 2018: Day Two, Option Three We learned today that we are humbled before the Creator God who makes us, moves to us, and speaks to us still. We discovered that people are made for right relationship with God but we are also sinful. All people choose sin, we choose to reject God. The good news of the Gospel is that God chooses us in Christ. Because of the cross and the resurrection, we by God s grace, can all have a right relationship with God. What does it look like to humble ourselves before this God, to receive forgiveness, and to live with God in a personal relationship? It looks like the steps to confession and repentance: 1. First, rest in the promise of forgiveness. 2. Second, say the same thing about your sin that God does. 3. Third, turn to Jesus. Ask for help. Take a few moments to think through this activity and reflect on God s forgiveness for you. Instructions 1. On a blank sheet of paper in your student book or on the back of this paper, draw a picture of yourself. Make sure to leave room around the picture to write some things down. 2. Now, read back through our passage today in Psalm 119: Spend a few minutes in prayer. Then, draw your heart. Under your heart, answer these questions: 1) How has God forgiven you? What does it mean for God to shower you with forgiveness? 2) How does your heart look different before and after forgiveness? How would you draw that change? 4. Next to your heart, draw a cross. At the bottom of the cross, write down any sin you want to give to God. Pray silently, naming those sins to God. Ask for forgiveness. 5. Finally, what might your life look like in a right relationship with God. How might you nurture your life with God? Who might help you walk on that path? Answer the questions below: 1) I will grow in my relationship with God by practicing:. 2) One person I will ask to help hold me accountable in my relationship with God is:. 6. End your time of reflection by thanking God for his forgiveness.

Faith & Faithfulness Breakout Groups 2018: Day Three, Option Three We learned today that salvation is by grace through faith. Faith is our response of yes to God. Faith, or trust, is the human response to God. We also learned that faith and faithfulness are two sides of the same coin of discipleship. Faith is trust in God, resting in God s grace. Faithfulness is the living of this trust, stepping into life in light of grace. This activity, therefore, is designed to help students reflect upon faith and faithfulness in their personal relationship with Jesus. Instructions: After you have found a spot by yourself, open your Bible to Romans 6:1-14. Once there, spend a few moments praying this prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to listen as you speak to me through God s Word. After praying the above prayer, read through this scripture passage slowly at least two times. Once you have read through the passage twice, sit silently for a couple of minutes, reflecting on what this passage means for your life. After reflecting silently for a few minutes, answer the questions below. 3 Questions: What word or phrase from this passage spoke directly to you? Write it down here. What does this passage mean for your life today? Write your answer down here. What is this passage asking you to do or to be today in Jesus? Write your answer here.

ACTS of Prayer Breakout Groups 2018: Day Four, Option One Today we learned that faithfulness is a life focused on God s presence with us and purposes for us. Instructions: In your group you are going to take turns saying out loud a group prayer to God. You will pray through the ACTS of prayer together. ACTS stands for: A: Adoration (praise) C: Confession (admitting our sin) T: Thanksgiving (thanking God for what he s done in our lives) S: Supplication (asking God to work in our lives, to help us or others) Steps to pray the ACTS of prayer: 1. Choose a group leader who will guide your small group through the ACTS of prayer. 2. Group leader starts with Adoration by voicing out loud a short word or phrase that is a praise to God. The group leader will say something like: God is great. 3. As soon as the group leader voices praise, someone else in the group can chime in. Try not to pause. Group members jump in and say as many praises as you can think of. 4. Next, the group leader will move on to confession. The group leader will say something like, Forgive us for our selfishness. Then, others will chime in. 5. The group leader next voices a thanksgiving to God. Others in the group add their thanks aloud, one after the other. 6. Finally, the group leader offers a supplication, which is a big word for: asking God to help us or to work in our lives. You might say something like, God please help us to hear your voice speaking to us in worship tonight. Or, God, please give me the courage to share my faith with my friends at school. After the group leader asks for God s help, others can add their prayers. 7. End by saying, amen, and returning to the large group for discussion.

God s Purpose for Me Breakout Groups 2018: Day Four, Option Two Today we learned that faithfulness is a life focused on God s presence with us and purposes for us. And we practice such faithfulness in the ordinary circumstances of our lives through an intimate relationship with God. One of the primary ways that we learn to focus our lives on Jesus is to center our life on God s Word. God s Word teaches us God s purposes for us. This activity, therefore, is designed to help us learn to read the Bible on our own, and to discover God s big purpose for every person. Spend the next few minutes going through this activity quietly and reflectively, and then we ll come back together to share. If you have questions or need some help you can grab an adult leader. 1. Read Acts 9:1-20. Then, answer the following questions: a. What was the purpose of Saul s life before he met Jesus? b. What happened in Saul s life that caused him to change? c. What was the name of the Christian Jesus sent to help Saul learn to see? d. How did Saul s life change after meeting the risen Jesus? 2. Think about your life. What is the purpose of your life? If like Saul you were to surrender to Jesus as Lord, how would your life purpose change? 3. Write down how knowing and following Jesus would change your life purpose. 4. Now, write down the names of three Christians with you this week at camp that live what they say they believe. Describe the kind of relationship you have with this person. Is this person a: a. Friend b. Mentor c. Minister/Pastor d. Wise teacher or coach e. Family member f. Other 5. Next, describe one example of how each of these three people demonstrates their faith to you. 6. Finally, if you ve never surrendered your life to Jesus, circle the name of one of the three people above who you will ask today to share with you how you can become a Christ follower. If you are already a Christ follower, circle the name of one person above whom you will thank today for being a faithful Christian example for your life. 7. When you are finished, put your pen down and rest. Spend a few minutes in prayer, thanking God for how he changes lives. 8. Return to the large group when your leader calls you together.

The Lord s Prayer Exercise Breakout Groups 2013: Day Four, Option Three Begin this exercise by praying through the Lord s Prayer three times. You may use this handout, your own bible, or recite the prayer silently by memory if you know it. Go slow. Think about the words as you pray. When you are finished, sit quietly and listen for God for just a moment. Next, think about the words of the Lord s Prayer. Sometimes this is called the model prayer. Jesus taught his disciples to bring every area of life to the Father, even and especially the normal parts of life. What would it look like for you to pray this way in your life with God? Next to each line of the Lord s Prayer below, fill in the blank as it relates to your own life with God. Think about how God is present in these normal life areas. If there s not enough room in the blanks, you can write your answers on the back of this page. Afterwards, pray through this prayer using the blanks you filled in. The Lord s Prayer; Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from evil. God, I praise you. You are in my life. God, may your will be done through me at (an area of your life, like home, school, work, team, etc.) God, provide for me the I need to live. God forgive me for. Help me to forgive (name) for doing (action). God, protect me against.
