2 Page 2 Our Lady of Grace Dear parishioners: Moses, in today s first reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, is on the threshold of the Promised Land, having led God s people over a forty year period from slavery in Egypt through the desert to freedom and now they are on the verge of entering the Promised Land. He reminds them of who took care of them on that journey from slavery to freedom. He provided manna in the desert to sustain them on their journey. Life is frequently described as a journey for us as well. For many people, life is a journey from some form of personal slavery addiction - to freedom. We are very much an addictive culture today addicted to technology, to drink, to drugs, to sex, to pornography, to power we have a tendency to addiction. Through programs like the 12 step programs, we, like Moses leading the people from slavery to freedom, are led from a personally induced slavery to addiction to freedom. I remember hearing the story about a poor Italian family that was forced to emigrate from a small village in the South of Italy, in the 1930 s. Their friends in the village gave them a buon viaggio safe voyage - party before they set sail from Naples for their long trip to New York. They gave them practical gifts for the voyage bread and cheese and wine. Being a poor family, they could only afford the cheapest cabin third class in the lowest deck of the ship. Those of you who watched Titanic should be able to envisage their plight on board ship. The ship set sail: the emigrant family stayed pretty much to themselves in their cramped quarters for the duration of the trip, eating the coarse bread and hard cheese before washing it down with the wine. After about a week at sea the oldest son, growing restless from cabin fever, left the cabin. Being somewhat adventurous, not unlike Jack Dawson played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie Titanic, he went on an exploratory trip which took him to the upper deck and to the dining room. Meantime, his parents became alarmed when he went missing for a few hours. His father went in search of him. His heart sank when he saw his son stuffing his face in one of the elegant dining rooms on the upper deck. How was he going to pay for his son s extravagance? All he had was a few dollars. His son noticed him and beckoned to him to join him. The father was just about to read -the-riot-act to him when his son reassured him, the food is included in the price of the ticket. Can you imagine the frustration of the father when he realized that he, his wife and children, were eating bare sustenance food junk food - for the duration of the trip when in fact they could have been eating this mouth-watering food instead? As I mentioned earlier, Life is often described as a journey. So often, so many - Christians among them - settle for the junk-food served up by movies, TV, chat-rooms, IPods, cell phones and the like, and fail to feed their children with Jesus, the Bread-of-Life, as they make their journey through life. Jesus reminds us in today s Gospel, He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him. Like Moses with God s people in their journey, Jesus walks with us like he did with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus and feeds us on the journey. We hear Jesus say at the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper, I do not call you servants, I call you friends. That friendship is sustained around the table of the Eucharist. The word Companion comes from two Latin words: Cum meaning with and, Panis meaning Bread. It means making friends while breaking bread. Friends are made in school cafeterias, fast food joints like MacDonald s and Wendy s, and over snacks and meals in friends houses. Let us accept Jesus invitation to dine with him and to become friends with him: You are invited to dine with me, from now throughout eternity. Believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and dine with Jesus as your host. To live in heaven eternally, all you got to do is.rsvp. Fr. Nick.

The evening begins with pizza and soft drinks. Teens are encouraged to come and to make friends, be a friend, bring their friends. High School Teens meet Wednesday evenings in the Youth Center from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. High School teens get together on Wednesday evenings in the John Bosco Youth Center for fun and games, both indoor and outdoor. Outdoor games include soccer and touch football under the lights and basketball on the blacktop. High School Youth group: For a tasty and wonderful breakfast of pancakes, sausages and juices for our Kindergarten through fifth grade end of the Sunday school year classes. Grade school, Junior High and High School Teachers: For your time, dedication and commitment in handing on the faith to the next generation. You are that link in the chain, a bond of connection between persons with Jesus as the source and you as the emissary in handing on Jesus today. OLG Scholarship Committee: For your generosity in raising funds from OLG Parish Golf Tournament, under the chairmanship of Dennis Kellner, and OLG distribution committee, under the chairmanship of Jim and Marilyn Conroy. 4 Page 4 Our Lady of Grace Stephen Curry Basketball superstar Stephen Curry, who was officially named the NBA s MVP over a number of seasons, has spoken of his deep Christian faith. Sometimes people make it seem like you have to have certain prerequisites or a crazy life story in order to be successful in this world. But the truth is you really don t, Curry said. It doesn t matter where you come from, what you have or don t have, what you lack or what you have too much of all you need to have is faith in God, an undying passion for what you do and what you choose to do in this life and a relentless drive and the will to do whatever it takes to be successful in whatever you put your mind to. Curry, a Christian who plays for the Golden State Warriors, also spoke of his decision to take his faith more seriously. My parents had us in church every Sunday and every Wednesday. It was more of a tradition at that point, I didn t have a personal relationship with the Lord until I went to the altar call one Sunday and the youth pastor told us to make a decision for ourselves, Curry said. Collection for Church Service Center June 2/3 As we approach the summer months we still need to support the same number of poor people here in Avon Park, families every month, representing between 1,200 and 1,500 poor people; that is about 1 in every 6. We thank you for bringing non-perishable food to Church to masses this weekend. We will also take a 2nd collection after communion to help those who come to the CSC seeking help with electric and water bills and with rent and mortgage payments. John Jeffo, who does sterling work as the executive director, has informed me that the CSC is in need of volunteers. Call John at It had to be a decision on our own, and that s when I made it. Parents, bring your kids to Mass during the summer months. It will make a difference in their lives like it did in Steve Curry s life. During the Mass celebrated by a priest from Prague, on his way to Rome, at the moment of consecration the blood of Christ trickled from the host, staining the corporal the white square cloth on the altar - and thus dismissing the doubts of the priestcelebrant on transubstantiation (that is to say the changing of the substance of the bread and wine into that of the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist). The miracle led to the establishment of the feast of Corpus Christi and the construction of the Cathedral of Orvieto, to which the corporal was transferred. Pope Julius II (1503 to 1513), witnesses the miracle kneeling to the right of the altar, with his staff of Cardinals and the recently formed Swiss Guard. Raphael draws a contrast between the attitude of faith and adoration by Pope Julius on the right of the altar and the argumentative attitude of the Reformers on the altar s left side. The Pope asked St Thomas Aquinas, living at that time, to write hymns for the feast and he wrote two of the best known hymns on the Eucharist: the Tantum Ergo (Down in Adoration) and O Salutaris (O Saving Victim). That blood-stained corporal the white square cloth on the altar - may still be seen in the Basilica of Orvieto north of Rome in a reliquary which is a replica of the Basilica.
