View it in your browser February 20, 2016 // Issue 202 There is always a sadness about packing. I guess you wonder if where you re going is as good as where you ve been. Richard Proenneke In some ways, it already seems like a dream. Were we really together all of us, this 1
2 great singing throng raising our hands and praising our Savior less than a week ago? Some stayed on an extra day to attend the Advance and Create conferences. A few more may have lingered to enjoy the sights of downtown Seattle. Some were never far from home to begin with; others travelled many hours to sleep in a familiar bed. This is our first post-gathering Sabbath. Each one of us will approach this sacred day differently. Many will attend worship services as usual at the local church. We'll greet friends. Listen to a message. Pray. We might be feeling on top of the world or almost paralyzed by sadness. Some of us are struggling with illness and personal tragedy. Maybe we're worried about the future, or trying to make a series of difficult decisions. We might be wondering about our purpose or how to make a real contribution to the world. We will have faced criticisms, disappointments, heartbreaks big and small in the last week alone. We will continue to face these throughout the rest of our lives. Through it all, Jesus is all. "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing" (Stephen Covey, quoted by William Johnsson). Happy Sabbath! Enjoy reading these reports, published by Spectrum, on the Advance conference and the Create conference. Share: Tag challenge! Our people are the best! We loved the shots you tagged #TOPSeattle2016 featuring your IDs. It was difficult to choose winners especially since we couldn't very well award ourselves the top prizes, though some of us argued passionately, forgoing meals and even sleep in order to advance our own interests. Seriously. It was like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington around here but without the selfless heroism. We came at last to a bitterly-won consensus. Here are the winners, from left to right, top to bottom. The order has no significance. Each photographer will receive a $10 itunes gift card, 2

Register for this one-day event, offered for the second time in Boulder, Colorado, and featuring incredible presentations, worship, opportunities for discussion and 3
4 fellowship. The 1:1 format is a small-scale version of a One project gathering, facilitated by and focused on the local church and community. As with all One project gatherings, the intention is to help people deepen their relationship with Jesus and become stronger Christians in their interactions with family, friends, and colleagues, making a profound and positive difference in their communities. Based on the two-volume series Jesus of Nazareth, written by former Adventist Review editor William G. Johnsson and produced by the Biblical Research Institute, Boulder 1:1 will explore the message and passion of Jesus, helping participants to connect these concepts with their own discipleship journey. There will be generous time for "recalibration," allowing participants to process their thoughts on the various reflections by noted speakers, and to begin engaging in practical applications that make a difference in their lives. The mini-gathering also offers generation One (ages 13-17) and TOP kids (ages 4-12) to help bring teens and children into closer relationships with Jesus through fun and interactive activities and social events. Regular adult tickets are $49 (until July 7) and $29 for full-time college students, teens, and children. Location: Boulder Seventh-day Adventist Church, 345 Mapleton Ave., Boulder, CO Share: 4
5 John Barrett writes haiku about Jesus John Barrett, from Gig Harbor, Washington, was at the first Seattle One project gathering back in 2012, when writer Becky De Oliveira said, "Jesus is the guy who understands that I don't write haiku about Jesus." Why did she say this? Who can remember. It was in response to an interview question. One can only assume that the question itself was completely inappropriate, poorly considered, and posed by a deranged imbecile. Never one to back away from a challenge or a chance to compose haiku John approached Becky in the foyer and presented her with an elegant haiku written in pencil on a Post-it (pictured above). If it weren't for the fact that John looks almost exactly like the actor Edward Norton, Becky might have found this creepy. As it turns out, this was the start of a friendship and creative partnership. Becky framed the haiku and it hangs above her desk. It reminds her of Jesus, of John, of possibilities, of miracles, of leaps of faith, of pencils. As for John, his gig as a haiku master has done nothing but gain momentum over the last four years. He was back in full force throughout the two-day One project gathering, composing a haiku for every single one of the sermons. John is a bit of an 5

One for us! John and Becky think a One project devotional book focused on the haiku form would be meaningful and fun. For those of you in need of a refresher, a haiku is defined as "a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world." The word haiku is the same in the plural as it is in the singular. Contact us if you'd like to write one or more haiku for this project. Share: 7
8 Top ten reasons to attend the gathering 1. You know how it is when you plan to run a marathon but you never get around to signing up? The road to the sofa is paved with good intentions. It's not hard to see how that applies here. 2. San Diego is near the Pacific Ocean. That means beaches. Theoretically, you can submerge your entire body in the water in February. People do this. You're a person. Others will try to discourage you from the beaches by telling you that they're populated by nudists. They're just messing with you because they think you're from the midwest and naturally prudish. You might want to lose the fanny pack. 3. San Diego is near Mexico. That means really good food! In spite of this obvious truth, young children and Paddy McCoy will try to make you eat Chipotle. Dump them all at the nearest 7-Eleven and spread your wings!. If you're going to contract E.coli, you at least deserve an authentic experience. 4. The band from Boulder Adventist Church Chapels & Cathedrals will be leading worship, along with a variety of local talent. 5. The amazing, creative, and utterly inexhaustible Zan Long will be running TOP kids. 6. The line-up of speakers will be as always diverse and engaging. Some might still have beards. Or they may have moved on to the hottest trend of Who knows what that might be. We aren't psychic. But we will go ahead and predict chin art. 7. You will connect with Adventist Christian disciples from all over the country and the world in deepening your relationship with Jesus. These are people whose homes you can likely crash whenever you happen to be passing through their country, city, or 8
9 derelict hollow. 8. Pastor Jessyka Albert will be leading the first young adult track for those aged It will feature designated extracurricular social activities and discussions. Given the demographic, these will probably take place mostly on a phone. 9. Tim Floyd and Delwin Finch will be back to make sure you look fabulous and can tag yourself with pride on all forms of social media. They will be joined by new talent Kyle Smith. 10. The Create conference will take place for the second time, immediately following the gathering. It will feature a variety of dynamic presentations on the local church. Join us in San Diego at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center (February 25-26, 2017) for our 29th gathering, focusing on the Bible's ultimate book. Our theme, "The Revelation of Jesus Christ" will present a brighter picture of hope in the One. Please note that we will be meeting on Sabbath and Sunday. Tickets are non-refundable. They can be transferred to another person only up to December 31, They cannot be transferred to another gathering. Sign up to receive the One collective for information on this gathering as well as other One project events and initiatives. Share: 9
10 Who do you think you are? Our new devotional series will focus on identity. What makes you who you are? What events, people, or experiences have formed your identity? Have you suffered threats to your self-concept or times when your identity has become stronger? How does Jesus factor into the way you see yourself? What about your work? Your achievements? Relationships? Your looks? The opinions of others? The following quotes on identity coming from a variety of perspectives may help spark ideas. We particularly appreciate essays that feature an authentic voice and address complex issues with honesty and transparency. Submissions of up to 750 words are welcome. Please include a short bio (three sentences). All of us take pride and pleasure in the fact that we are unique, but I m afraid that when all is said and done the police are right: it all comes down to fingerprints. David Sedaris Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. Oscar Wilde We know what we are, but not what we may be. William Shakespeare It s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their 10
11 own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story. Patrick Rothfuss I hate how I don t feel real enough unless people are watching. Chuck Palahniuk Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
