God of knowledge and wisdom, we pray to you for all the schools across this country, which are part of the Episcopal Church. We remember them in their variety, in their differences, and in what they share. Give us open doors, open minds, and open hearts that we might accept, learn, and love everything and everyone whom you have given us. Help us to share our lives and what we have, and to learn from all those who are in school with us. We pray in the name of Jesus who opened his arms to all, young and old. Amen. 8 Nicene Creed Page 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. This is a great family event and the youth can earn community service hours! The link can be found in the Bell Tower and on the website. All Saints Day/175 Anniversary Celebration. On Sunday, November 5, we will celebrate the 175 Anniversary with one service at 9:00 am. The service will be followed by a Brunch. Holy Play is a worship-filled playdate designed for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and a caregiver, held in the Prayer Room every Tuesday from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. The program explores the lives of Holy Men and Women and is loosely based on a Morning Prayer service. The Thomas Circle Singers, James Kreger, Artistic Director, opens it concert season with Love, labors, Loss on Saturday, October 28 at 5:00 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 945G St, NW at Metro Center. Jim will lead the singers in a program of music that examines the significant influences on and stages of our life the impact of love, the ordering of our daily work, and the eventuality of loss. Included will be music by Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre, Gwyneth Walker, Randall Thompson and the Washington, DC premiere of Alice Parker s Heavenly Hurt, a seven-movement setting of poems by Emily Dickinson. 19 Refugee Facts: Did you know more than half of the world s refugees are children under the age of 18, and the United States predominantly admits refugee families? The vast majority of newly resettled refugees quickly find jobs (85 percent of refugees resettled by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) are working within 180 days of arrival). In the decade ending in 2014, the Department of Health and Human Services estimated that refugees brought in $63 billion dollars more in local state and federal revenue than they cost. Once refugees have been cleared for resettlement, the U.S. government works with the IRC and eight other national resettlement agencies to help them restart their lives in America. Refugees are usually greeted and welcomed at the airport by case workers from resettlement agencies like the IRC to ensure their transition is as comfortable as possible. Agencies are responsible for finding a suitable, affordable home for refugee families, something many of these refugees have gone without for years. Families also receive basic furnishings, food and other immediate assistance. Help St. John s support refugee families landing in our area to receive the basic furnishings by donating new and used items. We have started a registry for items needed for their starter home that you can find here: The items needed range from soap, toothbrushes and lightbulbs to dinnerware and dressers.
