27. The Epistle of 1Peter 4:10 The Gifts of the Holy Spirit Pt.9 (6/27/18) For the last few weeks we have been studying the gifts of the Holy Spirit here at Calvary on Wednesday nights. We have looked at the lists that Paul gave in 1Corinthians 12 and Romans 12. Three of the more prominent gifts prophecy, tongues and the interpretation of tongues are mentioned in 1Corinthians 12 but focused on in detail in 1Corinthians 14 where Paul devotes the entire chapter to them. Last week, we finished looking at the gift of prophecy and started on the gift of tongues. The gift of tongues is a wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit, but it is also the most controversial controversy that s due mostly to ignorance. This is really sad given the fact that Paul began this whole section on spiritual gifts with 1 Corinthians 12:1 (NKJV) 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: Ignorance breeds controversy and controversy breeds division that s why right in the middle of his teaching on spiritual gifts Paul stops to teach on love in chapter 13. 1
The gift of tongues 1 Corinthians 14:1 (NKJV) 1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts (including tongues) No cessationist can deny that a gift of the Holy Spirit called the gift of tongues existed and was practiced in the early church Paul himself said he spoke in tongues more than most if not all Christians (1Corinthians 14:18). And because of it they don t try to deny the reality of this gift (they can t), so they say it was only for the first century church until the N.T. cannon of Scripture could be completed and then gifts like miracles, prophecy and tongues ceased. We have dealt with that position in this study already but let me say once again, it isn t up to charismatics to prove that tongues is still around it s up to cessationists to prove it no longer exists (that s a Scriptural problem for them). What is the gift of tongues? Speaking in tongues is the supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to communicate to God in a language you never learned and do not understand. It can be a modern language or dialect that is spoken somewhere in the world today. It can be an ancient language or dialect that has long since died out along with the culture that spoke it. Or it can be a heavenly language "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels (1Corinthians 13:1) This phenomenon first took place on the Day of Pentecost 2
Acts 2:4 (NKJV) 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. It says they began to speak in languages they had never learned as the Spirit gave them utterance or as the Spirit gave them the ability and prompted them. In other words, the Holy Spirit didn t take them over where they became like helpless puppets that He then spoke through against their will. (Explain) What is the purpose of the gift of tongues? Tongues is both a prayer language and a praise language, both of which are directed at God not man 1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV) 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. The idea that God speaks to His Church thru messages in tongues is unbiblical, albeit popular in charismatic circles. But nowhere in the Bible will you find a phrase like that because God never gives us messages or speaks to His Church in tongues prophecy yes, tongues no. 1. The gift of tongues is for the purpose of prayer it is a prayer language. 1 Corinthians 14:14 (NKJV) 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. This would lead many to say, How can praying in a language I don t understand be useful if I don t know what I m saying how can I know what I m praying for? 3
That s the point sometimes we don t know what to pray for in a given situation (Romans 8:26). Someone else would say Well then, if praying in tongues is perfect because it comes from the Holy Spirit who knows exactly what needs to be prayed for in a person s life or in a given situation then why don t we just pray in tongues all the time? Because then I would never know when God answered my prayers which would mean I would never be built up in my prayer life or know when to praise and thank God for His answers. Philippians 4:6 (NLT) 6 Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything, and don t forget to thank God for His answers. Paul s solution 1 Corinthians 14:14-17 (NKJV) 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified. Which brings us to the second purpose of tongues 2. The gift of tongues is for the purpose of praise it is a praise language. Acts 2:4-8, 11 (NKJV) 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God." (Praise) 4
What is the purpose of praising God in a language we have never learned? First of all, there are times in our Christian lives when words are not adequate to express our love and thanksgiving to God that s where tongues becomes a wonderful way to by-pass our limited vocabulary and praise God directly from the Holy Spirit Who is in us. Second, praising God in tongues by-passes our intellect which is prone to pride and selfishness because it s rooted in our fallen nature (this is also true when I pray in tongues). This is very humbling even humiliating to our intellect which immediately says to us, This is ridiculous! Do you really think you re actually speaking in a language you ve never learned? You re making a fool out of yourself! this has led many Christians to stop using this gift. (Explain) The exercise of this gift is a test of faith "But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit (Jude 1:20) But it s only when your heart is truly humbled before God and your faith is strong that praise can really please the heart of God. There are many who challenge the validity of speaking in tongues by saying that Jesus never spoke in tongues. Well, first of all, as God, Jesus already knew all languages therefore He couldn t have spoken in an unknown tongue (language). Secondly, Jesus didn t have a fallen nature filled with pride that He needed to by-pass to properly praise His Father like we do. 5
However even though Jesus never spoke in tongues He told us in Mark s gospel chapter 16 verse 17 that when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church one of the signs would be that Christians would speak in tongues. Now, many charismatics and Pentecostals believe that the only manifestation of being filled with the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues and unless a Christian speaks in tongues they are not filled with the Spirit they tell us. This group most closely parallels the Corinthian Christians in Paul s day who elevated the gift of tongues above all the others in importance and believed that if a Christian didn t have this gift they were not as spiritual as those who did possess the gift. The teaching that everyone who is filled with the Holy Spirit must speak in tongues is not Scriptural tongues is an evidence but not the only evidence. 1. In Acts 4:23-31 these were filled with the Holy Spirit but didn t speak in tongues they went out and preached the Word with boldness. 2. In Acts 8:14-18 when the Samaritans were filled with the Spirit it doesn t say they spoke in tongues although there was some manifestation that wasn t mentioned. (Explain) 3. In Acts 9:10-19 there is no mention of Paul receiving the gift of tongues when he was filled with the Spirit, but it does mention something like scales falling from his eyes are we to make scales falling from people s eyes the evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit? 4. We know that Paul had the gift of tongues, in fact he said in 1Corinthians 14 that he spoke in tongues more than all the Corinthians, but when he received the gift we are not told it may have been years after he was filled with the Spirit. 5. In Acts 19:6 when a group of disciples were baptized in the Holy Spirit it says they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 6
I think the Holy Spirit is trying to keep us from putting Him in a box when it comes to the evidence of Him filling our lives. 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 (NKJV) 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best gifts... (these are all rhetorical questions in the Greek expecting a no answer) This proves that not every believer is given the gift of tongues and that you can speak in tongues and not necessarily be filled with (controlled by) the Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 (NKJV) 1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? A Christian who doesn t speak in tongues but demonstrates agape love is showing more evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit than someone who speaks in tongues but manifests a critical, judgmental, divisive heart and no love. I personally believe that it s possible for all Christians to speak in tongues. Paul told us at the end of 1Cor.12 that not all Christians have the gift but that doesn t mean they couldn t have the gift if they really wanted it and asked God for it by faith so why don t they have it? (Fear, Pride etc. Explain) 3. The gift of tongues is for personal edification. 1 Corinthians 14:4 (NKJV) 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 7
So the purpose of the gift of tongues is for your personal devotional life to pray and praise God more effectively and to build you up in the faith (Jude 20) all of which edifies your inner man. No wonder the devil tries to attack you when you seek to exercise this gift with doubts and misconceptions to scare you away from it. Yes, but are these really languages or just gibberish? I think in many cases, especially in charismatic and Pentecostal churches where tongues has been elevated to a place where if you don t speak in tongues you are not spiritual, in those churches I believe there is a lot of pressure to speak in tongues so that some try to fake it or manufacture it and it is gibberish. But I still believe that the majority of those who speak in tongues are not faking it, they are exercising a real supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit. Jon Courson I ll never forget a meeting I attended at the Lake Arrowhead Hilton in California where about one hundred believers had gathered together for a time of waiting upon the Lord. Since hotel rules dictated that the bar remain open whenever the conference room was in use, the bartender stood in the back of the room polishing glasses while we studied, worshiped, and prayed. Toward the end of the meeting, a fellow stood up and gave a beautiful utterance in tongues. Because there was no interpretation, the brother overseeing the meeting wisely said, We thank the Lord for that utterance, but since there is not interpretation flowing here tonight, that will be our only public utterance of tongues. When the meeting concluded, the bartender approached us, and with tears running down his cheeks, said, I must talk to that man who stood up and prayed. How does he know my tongue? I m Iranian, and he worshiped the True and Living God in perfect Farsi. Needless to say, the bartender got saved that night. (Explain Chuck s daughter s speaking in tongues and someone who was visiting that knew the language an ancient dialect of French. And missionaries that have heard natives speaking in English) You don t need tongues it doesn t make you any less spiritual if you don t have this gift or any more spiritual if you do have it. 8
But for me, anything that God wants to give me I want, because all His gifts are good and perfect (James 1:17). 1 Corinthians 14:39-40 (NKJV) 39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order. So, Paul commands churches not to forbid tongues but he goes on to tell us the gift must be regulated in public meetings. In 1Corinthians 14 he instructs the Corinthians in the proper use of the gifts in the public assembly and the point he drives home is that: 1. There has to be order; 2. There has to be purpose. Paul wants to be very clear that there cannot be chaos in the public assembly where everyone is doing their own thing because the purpose in the public meeting must be the teaching of the Word for the edification of the whole church. So, the whole issue in chapter 14 boils down to public edification verses personal edification and which gifts (prophecy or tongues) was the proper gift to accomplish each of those purposes. And to achieve the proper application and balance Paul mandates that certain rules and restrictions be applied in the public assembly to assure that the proper conduct be maintained so that the work of the Holy Spirit in the public service isn t hindered or quenched. Often the criticism is when we restrict the use of the gifts to the biblical guidelines in public worship is that we are quenching the Spirit Paul is saying the exact opposite: 1 Corinthians 14:33 (NKJV) 33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. 9
1 Corinthians 14:1-5 (NKJV) 1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. So Paul tells us that speaking in tongues is good but in the public assembly prophecy is better. We will look at this next time as we finish our study on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. 10
