Explore the Bible Lesson Preview July 11, 2010 "What Spiritual Gifts Can I Use?" Background: 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 14:1-40 Lesson: 1 Corinthians 12:4-13, 18-19, 27-31; 14:1, Motivation: At Christmas or on our birthday, we love to open gifts! God's Word clearly teaches that each Believer receives at the point of conversion one or more Spiritual gifts. In this study, we'll define, explore and explain spiritual gifts and their purpose. I. Learn About Spiritual Gifts (12:1-10) "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant. " (1) A. How Do We Define Spiritual Gifts? 1. What they are not: a. They are not talents/abilities, temperaments or inherited traits. These benefit all and come at human birth. b. They are not the fruit of the Spirit. 1) The fruit of the Spirit may be momentary (may come and go). The gifts of the Spirit are permanent. 1 / 22

2) The fruit of the Spirit comes from within. The gifts of the Spirit come from without. 3) The fruit of the Spirit will demonstrate all of its forms. All the gifts of the Spirit will never be present in any one believer. 2. What they are: Definition: (Thayer, Bible Dictionary) Extraordinary powers given Christians, enabling them to serve the Church. The Greek word used for spiritual gift is charisma which is also the same word used as the gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23). Charism a is used at least fifteen times in the New Testament including four listings of Spiritual Gifts. Some notable Bible scholars interpret the terms used in Ephesians 4:11 as offices or designations rather than gifts; however, several offices overlap with gifts, and one would assume a need for a gift to perform an office function, such as teacher. B. Who Gives the Gifts? "There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit" (4) 1. I Cor. 12:11 "But one and the same Spirit works all these things distributing to each one individually... " 2. Hebrews 2:4: "... and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will." 2 / 22

3. Romans 12:3-8 "...having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us..." C. What Are the Purposes of Spiritual Gifts? "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all " (7) - Larry Gilbert in his excellent book, Team Ministry, suggests nine reasons we are given gifts: 1. A spiritual gift is the primary channel by which the Holy Spirit can minister through the believer. 2. A spiritual gift is a supernatural capacity, an enabling for the future. 3. A spiritual gift is a supernatural desire (I Timothy 3:1 - first requirement for service) 4. Spiritual gifts are the tools for doing the work of the ministry. 5. A Spiritual gift is the source of joy in your Christian life. a. Doma (Luke 11:13; Ephesians 4:8 "a present, to build, a gift." b. Charisma (Romans 12:6, I Cor. 12:4, 9, 28, 30, 31) "a divine gratuity, a spiritual endowment, a religious qualification, a free gift.' A form of the word Charis. c. Charis usually translated "grace." Char "joy happiness, fulfillment." 3 / 22

New T I Corinthians Lesson 6: "What Spiritual Gifts Can I Use?" 6. A spiritual gift is a divine motivator. 7. A spiritual gift divinely influences one's motives. 8. A spiritual gift is a divine calling and responsibility. (I Cor. 1:26) 9. Spiritual gifts are the building blocks of the church. D. Where Do We Identify Spiritual Gifts In Scripture? "But to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit; to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit." (8) Believer's Study Bible (p. 1636) Provides the following reference and gift lists: Romans 12:6-8 I Corinthians 12: Corinthians 12: / 22

Interpretation of Tongues Notice that the Holy Spirit emphasizes the serving gifts everywhere but to the Corinthians. In interpreting this passage, we must keep in mind that Paul was addressing problems and gift abuses as we shall see in chapters 13 & 14. Certain gifts necessary for the first century church are no longer in existence. II. Learn About Using Spiritual Gifts (12:11-26) A. Bodylife and Baptism (12:12-14) 1. One Body, Many Members (12, 14) - "Big We, little i" - unity with diversity. The church is one body with many members. 2. One Baptism, Many Fillings (13) - Believer's Study Bible, p : 12:13 "At conversion, the believer is born again by the Holy Spirit (John 3:3-6). He is also baptized by the Holy Spirit, which unites him to the body of Christ, the church, and to Christ in His death, burial and resurrection. Rom. 6: Baptism by the Spirit must be distinguished from the filling with the Spirit: the baptism is never commanded; the filling is (Eph. 5:18). After Pentecost (cf. also Acts 8:14-17) the baptism is once and for all at conversion, while the 9 / 22

filling needs to be repeated (Acts 2:4, 4:31). The baptism is positional; the filling is experiential. The baptism does not bestow power, but the filling does (Acts 4:31). Confusion arises because on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) the baptism of the Spirit (Christ's ascension gift) and the filling with the Spirit happened almost simultaneously." B. No Member Unnecessary (12:15-17) "If the foot should say, Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,' is it therefore not of the Body? " 1. Our Sense of Worth Should Come From God's Word, NOT From Our Feelings Just because the foot doesn't feel as important as a hand, doesn't make the foot any less important to the Body. Our feelings should not be the final arbitrators of our worth! The Bible says we are children of the King, heirs and joint-heirs with Christ! (Romans 8:17) Fact is fueled by faith which is sometimes followed by feelings. 2. Our Sense of Usefulness Should come From God's Power, Not From Our Resources Our emphasis too often is upon what we can do rather than whose we are! The Holy Spirit gifted us and empowered us to do exactly what He wants us to do. (I Cor. 10:31) 3. Our Sense of Belonging Should Come From God's People, Not From Our Circumstances 10 / 22

As a Believer, we belong in the Body. There are no second class citizens in God's Kingdom. Just because we may not be as visible or as vocal as another member does not mean that we are not just as vitally connected. C. Each Member Placed By God (12:18-20) "But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as he pleased. " (18) 1. Every Christian receives at least one spiritual gift at conversion; God equips you for service in some area. (I Corinthians 12:7,11; I Peter 4:10) As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another. 2. A spiritual gift is a divinely empowered ability in a specific area to accomplish more than would be humanly possible. (Romans 12:6-8) God decides who gets what. 3. All spiritual gifts are given for the purpose of building up God's Kingdom. (Ephesians 4:11-12; I Timothy 3:1) Ministry should not be limited to your gift(s). For example, all Christians are commanded to: Evangelize - Mark 16:15 5:13; Colossians 3:23-24 Serve - Galatians 11 / 22

Prophesy (forthtelling not foretelling)- I Cor.14:1 Shepherd - Romans 15:1 Exhort - Hebrews 3:13 ; Hebrews 10:25 3:12 Show Mercy - Luke 10:37; Col. Administrate - I Tim. 3:4; Proverbs 16:32, 17:2 3:16 Teach - Colossians Give - II Corinthians 9:7 D. Spiritual Gift Abuses (12:21-26) Larry Gilbert (Team Training) suggests six abuses of the doctrine of spiritual gifts that can be generally suggested by this chapter: 1. Gift Ignorance - perhaps the most widespread abuse among Christians: ignoring the fact that they are gifted. (12:1) 2.. Gift Blindness - this is not so much ignoring the doctrine as to being blind to God's desire for them to use the gift(s) (12:7-11) 3. Gift Gravitation - the desire to be like someone else (12:;12-17) 4. Gift Imposing - suggesting that everyone should have your gift or suggesting that a Believer is not needed because they don't have a particular gift. (18-24) 12 / 22

5. Gift Colonization - forming parties in the church around particular gifts. (25) III. Learn About Other Spiritual Gifts (12:27-31; 14:1-5) At the conclusion of chapter 12, Paul mentions the gifts o f Apostles, prophets, teachers, miracles, healings, helps, administrations & tongues. (28) After his discourse on love (Chap. 13), Paul urged the primacy of prophecy over tongues in 14:1-5: Prophecy Tongues to be desired more (1) to be desired less (1) to speak to people (2) to speak to God (2) 13 / 22

for edification, exhortation, and comfort (3) mysteries (3) edifies the church (4) edifies the speaker (4) greater gift (5) lesser gift (5) IV. Learn About Using Other Spiritual Gifts (14:6-40) A. Tests for Tongues (6-11) 1. The Test Of Edification (6) - This theme is repeated throughout the chapter (4, 12, 19, 26). When the Body of Christ comes together, it is for the purpose of mutual benefit, not individual glorification. We are not to edify ourselves. Jesus taught us to deny ourselves (Matt. 16:24). cf. Ephesians 4: The Test Of Clarity (7-8) - Using the example of musical instruments, Paul makes the 14 / 22

point that unless their notes are clear, they do more harm than good. 3. The Test Of Understanding (9-11) - These verses would lead one to believe that the tongues phenomena at Corinth had to do with known languages. J. Vernon McGee accepts this position ( Thru the Bible, Vol. 5, p. 14): "It is interesting to note that Jesus never spoke in tongues. There is no record of the apostles speaking in tongues after Pentecost. We do not have an historical record of Paul speaking in tongues or any sermon delivered in a tongue - although we know from verse 18 that Paul did speak in tongues because he said, I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all.' I did not realize the import of this statement until I was in Turkey. I visited the ruins of the seven churches there, and obviously Paul had preached in all of them; then going way out into the interior. Into Anatolia, I realized that Paul had walked across that section - all the way from Tarsus, his hometown. It is a distance of hundreds of miles, and in that section there was tribe after tribe speaking different languages. I have often wondered how Paul was able to speak to them. Well, he spoke as the apostles did on the Day of Pentecost. Every man heard him speak in his own tongue. He probably said to the Corinthians, If you want tongues, go out on the mission field and start speaking in the languages of those people.' " (Rom. 8:29; Eph. 5:1) B. Superiority Of Prophecy (14:12-25) Perhaps no theological debate has split more churches and caused more bruised feelings than 15 / 22

that over speaking in tongues. Many dedicated scholars feel that the phenomena of tongues ceased with the first century church: "It was Dr. A. T. Robertson, foremost Baptist Greek scholar, who made this statement: Tongues seem to have ceased first of all the gifts.' Chrysostom, one of the early church fathers, writing in the third or fourth century, stated: This whole passage is very obscure; but the obscurity arises from our ignorance of the facts described, which, though familiar to those to whom the apostle wrote, have ceased to occur." Thru the Bible, p However, we cannot ignore the fact that many dedicated sincere Christians claim speaking in unknown tongues as a modern day gift. For many of them, it is a "private prayer language." (note Jesus comment, Matt 6:7-11) If other Christians claim a blessing from tongues, why do we not allow the public practice, teaching or training in this phenomena? 1. Tongues Should Not Be Desired Or Sought (12) "let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel." Those who spoke in tongues at Corinth held that gift up as a test of maturity. Quite naturally, they felt that everyone else should have this "blessing." Paul takes a strong stand that tongues are the least of the gifts (note listings I Cor. 12:8-10, 12:28-30) and not to be desired above the more edifying gifts (14:1). In verse 20, he chides the tongue-speakers for thinking they are mature when in fact they are " children " and " babes ". 2. Tongues Must Always Be Interpreted (13-17, 27-28) Paul writes that we worship with 16 / 22

our mind as well as our spirit. Th erefore, in an assembly of Christians, tongues should not be used unless an interpreter is present. 3. Tongues Must Not Be Used In Public Worship (18-25) - Paul was not a person of few words (Acts 20:7-12). Yet, by comparison, he preferred to limit his remarks to five known words rather than 10,000 unknown. a. Tongues were prophesied as a sign to unbelieving Jews. (21-22 quoting Isa. 28:11-12) b. Tongues are out of place in public worship where unbelievers may be present. "Wil l they not say that you are out of your mind? " (23) Inherent in this principle is the application that seekers should be made to feel welcome in our services. Believer's Study Bible, p. 1640: 14:21-25 "Tongues or ecstatic utterance was a common religious practice in pagan religion for centuries prior to this. A portion of the confusion about tongues' may result from two different cases being discussed in the New Testament. In effect, Corinthian ecstatic utterance was a poor imitation of the gift of tongues given by the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 at Pentecost. Verse 21 quotes Is. 28:11, 12, which clearly has reference to the speaking of a diversity of known human languages. There follows an apparent contradiction between vv. 22 and 23. In v. 22, tongues are a sign to unbelievers.' But in v. 23, the uninformed' or unbelievers are likely to conclude that insanity exists in one who thus speaks in tongues. 17 / 22

But there is no contradiction. Verse 22 has reference to the actual gift of tongues as in Acts 2, there the unbelievers heard the gospel in their own dialects and were both amazed and convinced by the sign. However, v. 23 warns that the exercise of the Corinthian imitation, which was only the frenzied concoction of sounds, would have an effect of repugnance on unbelievers. On the other hand, vv. 24, 25 extol the virtues of the gift of prophecy." 4. Tongues Must Be Severely Restricted - Judging by the limits imposed, Corinthian worship must have been pandemonium. The worshippers had forgotten the reason they had gathered; they had taken the spotlight off God and put it upon themselves. Uncontrolled outbursts had resulted in confusion (33). Paul suggest that many were demonstrations of carnal pride rather than Holy Spirit revelation (32). While not entirely outlawing tongues (39), the following restrictions were placed upon speaking in tongues: a. It must be exercised in love (13:1) b. It must be balanced with prophesy (19) c. It must be translated, suggesting a valid known language (10-11, 27-28) d. It is intended to be a sign to unbelieving Jews (21-22) e. It must not be used in public worship where unbelievers might be present (23) 18 / 22

f. It must be limited to three instances "at the most" (27) g. It must be done one at a time (27) h. It must be limited to one interpretation (27) i. It must be limited to men only in the church (34) verses apply only to speaking in tongues (cf. 11:5) j. It must be appropriate to the time and place; it is not an uncontrolled outburst (32-33, 40) 5. Need For Order In Worship (14:26-40) Speaking in tongues gave rise to the instructions in this section; however, spiritual principles are shared that should guide our public worship: a. Worship Should Edify (26) - Christians should leave a public worship service having learned something about God and perhaps something about themselves. Whatever is done in public, should be done to build the Body rather than to glorify an individual.(i Peter 1:10-12; Ephesians 3:8-12) b. Worship Should Be Orderly (33, 40) - Perhaps the Corinthian church at this time did not have a professional minister or paid staff. As the church grew, pastors and elders become a necessity. Even in the midst of confusion, there is a sense of spontaneity and freshness to their worship 19 / 22

where seemingly everyone had something to contribute (27, 29-30). The balance of order and spontaneity must result in the purpose of the church coming together being met. Paul sternly admonishes the Corinthians to take turns (27), to not talk in the pews (30), for women to discuss matters at home (35) and for things to be done " decently and in order " (40). However, he cautions not to forbid anyone from participating no matter how small their gift (39). c. Worship Should Magnify God And Put The Spotlight On The Body Rather Than Any Individual - All of the principles of rights and responsibilities presented in chapters 8-11 are now squarely focused on their application to worship. For the benefit of the entire Body, each individual must be willing to give up what they consider a right: the right to speak at the moment they believe the Spirit prompts them; the right to talk out of turn; the right to ask "meaningful" questions in private while another is speaking; the right of a woman to speak out; the right to have a personal spiritual experience to the detriment of the group. As Christians, we lay down our "rights" and take up His responsibilities. Application 1. Public worship should emphasize clearly presented truth. 2. Public worship should welcome seekers. 3. Public worship should edify the Body and magnify God. 20 / 22
