1 July 2011 Volume 62, Issue 7 The Challenger Church Picnic Join us for Sunday worship and fellowship at Lintott- Alexander Park on July 10 at 10:30 A.M. We will follow the same format as last year. If you have not joined us for worship at the park this is a special relaxed time of worship with a story style message, followed by a BBQ lunch and fellowship time. The message this year will come from 1 Samuel 25 What to do when you encounter a jerk? the story of David, Nabal and Abigail. As far as the picnic goes here is what you need to know bring some chairs, any kind of camping or lawn chair will do. This is a potluck so we re asking you to bring a salad or dessert to share. Good guidelines are to bring according to the size of your family. (Don t worry about bringing a salad that needs to be kept cold, Judy Lyttle has a great way of keeping our food on ice ready to be served.) The church will provide BBQ chicken. It helps if you let us know how many are coming with you so we have enough of our hot, fresh, off the great big BBQ trailer pit (it s Chicken Perfection) by Mike and Cheri Foster, so if you can sign up ahead of time, that would be great! Also, feel free to bring some lawn games and toys for our kids and families to play. Following the morning s worship service, we will have a great afternoon of food, fun and fellowship. Maybe you are thinking I ll just skip the picnic, please don t. The picnic is one of the few times during the year that the whole church is together. Each week you come to worship, have a great experience see some friends, praise the Lord together and are blessed by the preaching of the word. But you are only experiencing half the church. Unless you mix it up and sometimes go to the 9:15 and sometimes to the 11:00 you are only seeing half of our congregation. At the picnic you might see someone you know and find out they have been going to our church for over a year but they go to a different service than you. If you have never come to OUR church picnic please take a step of faith and join us this year. Pastor Mark Unstoppable Acts Series Starts Sunday September 11 We are gearing up for our fall sermon/small groups series entitled Unstoppable, based on the book of Acts. We are calling it Unstoppable because the Holy Spirit is never meant to be restrained in the world, in the church or even in our lives. We are told that the Holy Spirit comes with POWER, the Greek word is dunamis, the word we get dynamite from. That means the church should be an unstoppable force! If we are to be the church God wants us to be we need to know what God was doing in the first century church. This year our stage will be transformed into an archeological dig site, taking us back to ancient Greece as we consider what it was like in the early church. We will discover the many challenges the early church encountered as well as God s leading, working and deliverance on three missionary journeys. Be sure to check with your small group leader about when your group will be starting up in September with the Unstoppable series. If you are not in small group please let me encourage you to pray about joining a group at least for this series I believe it will be worth your spiritual investment. 3 Well Summer has finally arrived (on the calendar at least). This is the time of rest and relaxation, you know vacations, camping trips, tournaments, picnics, trips to the beach, back yard barbeques... all the relaxing stuff! In the midst of your fun and games this summer remember to continue to attend worship services and be connected with your small group. I want to thank all of you for your participation in the ministry fair -- ministry team leaders, thanks for an outstanding job. also thanks you for all who attended. Many of you indicated interest in joining various ministries. We are told in the scriptures that we are to each be a minister and in service. Sometimes we just like to sit and soak and let others carry the water. We need to be in ministry of some kind. If you would like more information please contact me. Speaking of fairs and opportunities, we plan to have a Small Group fair in late August. As you probably know by now we are planning to have an "all church" study of the book of Acts beginning in September. Each week there will be a sermon on a lesson from Acts and each small group will be studying the same text during In His Grip the week following the sermon. There will be materials and questions to assist each on in this study. Now back to the Small Group fair. In august we want to have a sign-up opportunity for everyone. You can choose any group, you don't have to stay in your current group or you can opt to stay where you are. Each of the small group leaders will have a table space and information about When, Where, and Times for their groups. Everyone needs to get in a group for this very powerful (Holy Spirit) study and the fair is the absolute best time to do that. There will be more information about the Small Group Fair in the Sunday morning bulletin as well as on line. Speaking of small group leaders, if you are interested in finding out more about being a small group leader please contact me. We also need host homes. Host homes are places where groups meet but the hosts aren't necessarily the leaders of the group. If you are interested in being a host please contact me. We offer added training for Leaders and Hosts. I hope you have visited our church website We have recently upgraded the site and will have many new features on the site as time goes along, MP3 sermons, pictures, etc. We also have a website administrator who is doing a great job, Drew Courtney. Some of you are saying who is Drew? Drew and his wife Julie have been a part of the church for a long time. However due to Drew's work schedule, Wal Mart Technical and Julie's illness, they don't get to worship services very often. Drew has been active in ministry working with Pastor Mark and the staff on improving our video presentations on Sunday morning. Drew did his college work in Information Technology. We are very glad to have Drew and Julie involved in this important ministry. I leave you with this scripture it has to do with our each being a minister and the responsibility of those in leadership to prepare or equip us. It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (Eph 4:11-16 NIV) Enjoy the "relaxing" season! Blessings, Pastor Skip 3

4 Down on the Farm Up a Tree Phoebe, the oldest of our calico cats, was missing this morning. Usually, she and Hissy Fit trot their feline selves into the house, grant me a passing greeting and head for the food dish. A quick scan of the yard turns up nothing. Kitty, kitty did bring a response from the neighbor s property next door. Normally, Phoebe is a quiet cat, usually offering a single meow to catch our attention. This time her meow is repetitive, only ceasing when I crash through tall grass and downed branches as I search for her. I wonder if she s listening to determine if I m friend or foe. As robust as her answer was, I m certain she is not injured but is trapped somewhere or stuck up a tree. The closer I am to the source of the call, the quieter her voice seems. Stepping down blackberry branches and nettles, pushing tall grass aside and using overhanging limbs for leverage, I make my way closer. Kitty, kitty?, I call again. A quick, mew, is the answer. A flash of furry white belly, draped over a limb, reveals her perch, twenty-five feet over my head. Oh, Phoebs, there you are. She hunkers closer to the branch, refusing to move. Grasping the end of a dry limb, I gently wiggle the branch. This exercise is rewarded with a loud yowl as she moves toward the tree trunk. She climbed the tree but didn t seem to know how to get down. She might also be scared that whatever chased her up the tree is still lurking in the brush. Moving her branch a second time does not have the desired effect. Instead, she scrambles up another five feet. No amount of coaxing can convince her to trust my voice enough to follow it to the ground. The combination of unfriendly terrain and an unwilling cat make a ladder rescue a non-option. She s still up the tree, calling for help but unable to figure out how to take the feline gifts of balance, agility and sharp claws and save herself. It s now a waiting game. She ll either get hungry enough to try backing down or she ll fall out of the tree. An outside influence may have triggered the trip up the tree, but her choice to stay there has consequences. As much as I d like to help her, I cannot. Truly, this is a heart-wrenching reality, not a heartless abandonment. I will keep calling and encouraging her, but she has to choose to do something different. As I wait, I ponder the similarity between Phoebe s behavior and how people react, myself included. Outside influences can sometimes puts us in a difficult place. We call out in distress, hoping for rescue. We even hear the voices of others as they respond to our S-O-S. When those answers encourage us to take a step, to change our behaviors or choices or to do something different, we tend to hunker down and hold on to the security of at least knowing we re out on a limb. We don t trust those answers and encouragement to lead us into new and better results. Spiritually, the same process applies. The voice of the Holy Spirit whispers; encouraging and directing us to understand certain life altering Biblical truths. Sometimes we are so frightened about the change that the painful current reality looks easier. We have to choose either to stay with what we know or to trust God and listen to his direction through the call of the Holy Spirit. If Phoebe overcomes her fear and backs down the tree, trusting in the gifts she has, she will be free. If her choice is to try and wait out the situation, eventually she will fall from her perch. If we listen to God, trust his love for us and follow his direction, as different as that may feel, we will live a freer life. If we don t, we will fall and there will be consequences. How do we know there are other choices? Read the Bible. Learn about God s promises to never leave us, that He is for us and He has plans that will bless us. Hear His voice, trust His Word and lean on those promises. The results are worth the risk! P.S.: It took two days, but she finally figured out how to come down. I guess that means there s hope for us all! Fay Ternan 4

8 Mission of the Month - White Cross For More than 80 years, White Cross has reached out to people in need. American Baptist women have given leadership in this ministry, which now provides some $750,00 annually in Overland and Overseas mission support. Now entire congregations often work together to fill White Cross requests from mission workers. Through white Cross gifts, church members provide urgently needed supplies than cannot be purchased with limited mission budgets. The need for both funds and practical items given through White Cross is greater than ever. American Baptists are generous and caring people with a true heart for mission. Church, Rochester, NY to help with their refugee ministry. Handiwork needs will include 3 roller bandages and other supplies for the Congo. The funds for this vital mission are provided by your contributions to the July Mission of the Month and also by using Fuller 1% Community Share Cards when shopping at our local Fuller Market Basket store. Thank you for your support. Mary Funk, Missions Team Leader This past year our church s generous contributions to White Cross provided medical supplies to India, aided in Sarah Chetti s prison ministry in Lebanon as well as providing supplies for the Dayton Christian Center in Dayton, Ohio. Over 300 rolled bandages were sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Katherine Niles, IM Congo, sent the following note: Thank you so much.we love those rolled bandages, but love more the prayers and energy they bring our way. Here s praying you keep the flame alive next year, and the next. The network of Baptist hospitals and health centers and the patients we serve benefit tremendously, and need all aspects of the on-going White Cross ministry! In the coming year our White Cross quota will include helping with Overseas Purchase Plans for Cuba and India. The Overland mission support will go to Lake Avenue Baptist 8

9 Let me introduce you to our new Church Librarian! You may recognize her as the "Baptism Lady," who fills the faunt with clean warm water and has clean towels for those who get dunked. Or, maybe, the "Behind the Scenes" person who can do everything to help the Youth Group succeed. Thespians at W.F. West H.S. know her as "Grandma Karen," who goes without sleep to design and construct/sew the amazing costumes in their productions. She has been my silent Library Helper for years, inputing our library items into the computer so we can have an up-to-date library catalog. Please join me in welcoming Karen Schessler, Church Librarian. Award-winning author Colleen Coble has wowed us again in the Library News Historical Novel/Suspense, series, "Mercy Falls," starting with Book 1, The Lightkeeper's Daughter, Book 2, The Lightkeepeer's Bride and Book 3, The Lightkeeper's Ball. These will be a good start in your summer reading! Francine Rivers has made a compilation of the five books in the bestselling Lineage of Grace series, called A Lineage of Grace. Francine chronicles the lives of the unlikely women chosen by God to be part of His plan of redemption. This book is in the Novel based on Biblical Character section of our library. Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins have continued in "The Jesus Chronicles" series with these three new books to our library in the Novel based on Biblical Character section: Mark's Story, Luke's Story, and Matthew's Story. Our home group just finished reading and discussing: The Case For a Creator by Lee Strobel. Lee Strobel reexamines the theories that o n ce led hi m a way f r o m God. Through this compelling account, you'll encounter the mindstretching discoveries from cosmology, cellular biology, DNA research, astronomy, physics, and human consciousness that present astoniching evidence in The Case For a Creator, found in Science and Christianity section. Submitted by Kim Marcus..... Living a holy life. 1 Peter 1:15-16 says "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy'." Are you happy? Satisfied with your life, your career, your marriage... It's not wrong to want happiness, but if you are living to be happy, you never will be. People who chase after happiness are the least happy folks around. It comes down to one thing: if you Worship is want to be happy, then seek to be holy, and happiness will be a biproduct. God said "You shall be holy, for I am holy" (Leviticus 11:44). But we must also seek to live wholly for Christ. Seek to be like Him and live for Him. As you live a wholly holy life, you will discover that you are a happy person as a result. Jesus says to each of us: "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it" (Matt. 16:24-25). If you want to be really happy, put God first. Do you seek to live a happy life over a holy life? Pursuing holiness brings happiness. Think about it. And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation; Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
