3 KEY CONCEPTS & DEFINITIONS - STUDIES OF RELIGION (45 & Aboriginal) The Dreaming (Tjukurrba / Alcheringa) Lies at the heart of Aboriginal spirituality and is hence fundamental to all Aboriginal societies and cultures. Kinship Is claiming a blood or spiritual family connection. Terra Nullius A British law claiming that 'empty land' may be lawfully settled and colonised by the Crown. (Contentious definition of the word 'empty') - Overturned through Mabo. Dispossession The inevitable breakdown of the kinship system as tribes and individuals were forced to forfeit their places of totemic identity and, consequently, their extended spiritual family. Native Title Recognises the validity of Aboriginal territorial laws already existing prior to European settlement. Refers to the communal or individual rights or interests of Aboriginal people in relation to land or waters. New Age Religions Form a spiritual movement, but lack a unifying creed, text, organisation or doctrine, but adherents often share similar beliefs and practices. Secularism Refers to 'the separation of church and state'; the declining power of religious institutions and practices in Western culture. Sectarianism Interfaith Dialogue Adhering or confined to the dogmatic limits of a sect or denomination - narrow minded. Formal discussion aimed towards developing greater mutual understanding between different religious traditions. Reconciliation The term given to the process whereby Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the non-indigenous citizens of Australia can move into the future with a new relationship based on mutual recognition, understanding and respect. Land Rights Movement A movement to secure the inherent rights of Aboriginal people to their land so spiritual and cultural integrity could be preserved. Denominational Switching The transfer of followers from one Christian denomination to another. Ecumenism A movement among Christian Churches promoting unity - the initiative and activities planned and undertaken to promote Christian unity.
