4 Second Baptist Church The Fellowship of Excitement What is the goal of this team? We are so excited that you are thinking about joining our team. As with any organization, the number one question you should be asking is, What are we trying to accomplish? or What is the goal of this team? At Second Baptist Church, our goal is the same across the board: From the nursery to senior adults, we exist to make disciples to lead people to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their relationship with Him. It is our goal to present the gospel to others in order to see the Holy Spirit change lives! Mission: The Great Commission Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20 Strategy: Evangelism and Discipleship But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. Acts 1:8 Product: The Gospel For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to every one who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16 Profit: Changed Lives Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 2 Second Baptist Church

5 Stepping into a leadership position has helped me learn how important it is that we as Christians show people how important they are to us. Josh Playbook 3

Your job is to surround yourself with gifted, dedicated individuals for every other leadership position. Evangelism Director Discipleship Director YOUR PART ON THE TEAM: BUILD YOUR TEAM Recruit a team that has a strong desire to reach people for Christ, will follow your lead, and knows how to have fun. Be responsible for working with your teachers in the selection of qualified class leaders for your leadership team. You will need the following leaders: Director 2 Assistant Directors (should be included in recruiting all remaining positions) Evangelism Director/Offensive Coordinator Discipleship Director/Defensive Coordinator Evangelism Director: Communications Outreach Secretary Greeter Social Sports and Rec Discipleship Director: Inreach Shepherd Group s New Member Men s Ministry Women s Ministry Volunteer Prayer Missions MULTIPLY LEADERS Raise up, train, and send out leaders from your class to help start other classes. 18 DIRECTOR continued... LEAD THE FLOW OF YOUR CLASS Plan ahead Refer to the Director s Announcements, which will be ed to you on Thursday afternoon and placed in the class records box each Friday. Organize announcements prior to your class meeting. Remember everything does not need to be announced - only those things that pertain to your class. Think of creative ways to promote events and enlist volunteers. SPEND TIME PREPARING FOR THESE CRITICAL TWENTY MINUTES (big 20) TO ENSURE QUALITY! Director Cont. Be protective of your class Do NOT announce events, seminars or speakers that have not been promoted by the church. This will keep you from mistakenly promoting something that would not be in the best interest of class members. Do NOT promote giving to any project or person without the approval of the finance committee. Please refer members with needs to the Pastoral Ministry of the church. Watch the time Make sure teachers have between minutes to teach the lesson. Begin and End each class at the designated time. lead MEETINGS WITH YOUR TEAM Plan at least three meetings for your leadership team during the year. Organize your agenda prior to each meeting. Use the following ideas to facilitate an effective meeting: Set goals based on the answers to the following questions: Where are you now? Where do you want to be? How are you going to get there? Discuss plans and make arrangements for special events. Evaluate each leadership area and critique its current status. Address problem areas. Set dates on your class calendar. Go over member and visitor rosters and ask the questions: What are they doing? What role can they fill on our leadership team? 16 Second Baptist Church

19 USE THE FOLLOWING TIPS TO HELP YOU BUILD YOUR TEAM 1 Assess the needs in your new environment Prioritize a list of everything that needs to be done and the jobs that need to be filled. Dream up a perfect world scenario. If you could have any person on your leadership team, who would it include? 2 Understand the eternal significance of your team and pray for workers in the harvest field Start at the top of your prioritized list and go call your followers. Be on the lookout for God s answer to your prayer. 3 Target specific persons you want for each job Match up the spiritual gift with the task at hand. Wait for the RIGHT person because it is better to have an opening than the wrong person. 4 Recruit with the end in mind Focus your team on the finish line. Most people will commit to something if they see a clear goal and an end in sight. Set goals for team members as well as deadlines. Director Cont. 5 Cast your vision often People want someone who is easy to follow. Be creative in motivating your team and remind your leaders why often. Plan a Building retreat for your team and inspire them with your mission statement, vision, and goals. Amazing things happen when you spend time with your leaders. 6 Develop a sixth sense for 2 things: Potential s Always be recruiting new leaders for your team. Everyone in your class is a candidate and should be asked to serve in some capacity on your team. If you don t ever ask, they may never serve. See people for who they will become, not who they are. Never underestimate the power of new believers and new people to the church. They are refreshing to work with, teachable, eager to learn, and ready to follow you. Recruit leaders who share your vision. Realize that people you genuinely like will be great ministry partners. Shore-up your weaknesses with your leadership team. Non-believers Get in the habit of recognizing new people to our church and/or non-believers. We are called to make disciples. Always work the crowd for potential leaders and new people. They are your primary TARGET. 7 Know the formula for pioneering a new position Learn It + Do It + Teach It + Leave it (in good hands) = Successful Succession. Playbook 17
