They will be encouraged to recognise that as members of a Christian community we are called to share this message with those in the wider worlds by showing goodwill to each other. Naming Share experiences that are familiar to students Reflecting Probe and understand experiences more deeply Christian Story and Vision Present Scripture and Tradition related to the topic Integrating Reflect on how Scripture and Tradition link to their lives Responding Decide what can be done. Teaching and Learning Experiences Preparing for Jesus and preparing your heart and yourself spiritually Students listen to the song Stay awake, be ready and write down and reflect upon what this means, makes them feel think or question. Five Point Plan Movements Discussion of the song, its meaning and how we can prepare for Jesus. Read some parts of scripture that relate to the topic and discuss how others have prepared for Jesus. Students create a list of the things they can do to prepare for Jesus, provide some examples and record some class responses on the white board.
4 Students use their responses to create a wreath out of paper, and write these statements on each leaf. Create an Advent calendar for each day with what they can do each day to prepare and wait for Jesus coming. Students research a variety of ways people prepare for Jesus arrival and display this as a poster or power point. Students also explore how people long ago prepared for his coming (Noah, Abraham etc). The message of Joy and Peace: The story of the arrival of Jesus Watch a short clip from you-tube (links to prayer from previous sessions) Read the scripture that retells the story of the birth of Jesus. Retelling the text, writing, drawing and orally (eg. Comics, road maps, writing scrips/plays).
5 Reflecting about the text through a variety of activities (eg. Point of view recounts). Writing a newspaper article about the birth of Jesus, based on what they have read/listened to from scripture. Creating Y charts for peace and joy. Celebration of the coming of Jesus: Catholic Traditions Students in pairs create a poster/power point presentation describing why Christians gather together to celebrate the birth of God s son, Jesus Christ, and how they celebrate. Students create 3D symbols of the Christian tradition: candles, stars, angels, character from the nativity story etc. Students write on what they symbolise.
6 Students make decorations for their Christmas tree about what they think the true meaning of Christmas is they record this on the back, eg) gifts- giving gifts to one another reminds us the gift of Jesus God gave to us. Actions that foster the Christmas spirit of peace and joy Students plan a goodwill mission of peace and joy that they could undertake as part of their Christmas celebration. This may be an action to help provide others with a better Christmas experience by raising money or even a small gesture to someone in need. Students create Christmas cards where they talk about what it means to give gifts of peace and joy to one another/family. Evaluation Teacher Evaluation What worked well? What needs to be done differently? Student Self Assessment (example questions only) What did I learn? What message does it hold for me?
