4 th Sunday in Lent-Year A Michael and Mary Whitehead April 2/3, 2011 Announcements Call to Worship: Elements of the Call To Worship and Prayers of the People by Moira Laidlaw and John Maynard, "Prayers and Litanies for Lent 4A" Is anyone anxious? Let them come to our God and pray. Is anyone discouraged? Let them hear the word and find new vision. Is anyone weak? Let them come and be filled with the strength of the Spirit. Is anyone sorrowful? Let them come and be comforted by God's presence. Is anyone joyful? Let them come and sing God's praise! Opening Prayer and Litany: In opening the eyes of the man born blind, Jesus shows that he, the Light of the World, has power to free people from all forms of darkness in their lives. Let us ask forgive-ness for being blind to God s love and for failing to ask for healing of our own blindness. (pause) God, you are the light. You do not see as humans see because you look into the heart: Lord, have mercy. God, you are the light. Anyone who follows you will have the light of life: Christ, have mercy. God, you are the light. You give sight to the blind both for those who cannot see and those who will not see: Lord, have mercy. Opening Hymn: River of Glory (658) Reading 1: Eph: 5: 8-14 Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the God. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to God. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes

visible is light. That is why it is said: Awake, O Sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light [and shine on you.]. This is the Word of God. Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name s sake.the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Reading 2: Adapted from: The gospel today deals with blindness but strangely enough it is not the blindness of the man that is central to the passage despite how this man is mentioned throughout it. Rather it is the blindness of those around him and most especially the blindness of the religious teachers and authorities to their sin. What are we to make of the story of the man born blind? While all people sin and fall short of the glory of God, most afflictions cannot be blamed on the sin of the person or upon the sin of the parents. God doesn't work that way. While some afflictions obviously are the result of one kind of sin or another - for example, someone driving drunk may have an accident in which they are crippled for life or in which they cripple someone else for life - for the most part many other afflictions can't be blamed on someone, nor should we try to blame them on someone. More importantly, we should try to bring healing to those who are afflicted. Jesus said, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life." Then he healed him with mud, spit and the touch of his own precious hand. This is how God operates; what Jesus is about. He came to give us relief from things that afflict us, to give sight to the blind, to heal the lame, to set free those who are oppressed, and to proclaim that God accepts those who are poor. Even if the particular affliction that rests upon a person is the result of a direct sin, like a drunken driver who has wounded himself or someone else, Jesus still wants them to be whole. He still wants to make the work of God manifest in their lives. That is

what the cross is ultimately all about - bringing forgiveness and salvation to sinners, and showing the love of God to those who, by any other standard, are unlovable. But some today, as in the past, do not accept Jesus example. There are many modern day self-righteous persons, both in the church and outside of it, who don't want to have to change their comfortable accommodation with the status quo; they don't want to change the way they see the world. It is safer to do nothing rather than change. We can give tax breaks to the rich, while we close down hospital wards and cut Medicaid. We can ignore the hunger in the third world. We call those who help street people and defend the abused women, unrealistic idealists who don't fully understand that those people are responsible for their own condition. We can cheer as the welfare rolls are reduced and funding for shelters and for counseling programs are cut. There is none so blind as a person who will not see. There is none so blind as a person who will not accept the call to allow the work of God to be displayed in their lives; the call of God to bring healing and salvation to those around us who really need it, regardless of whether they may have sinned. Amen. Acclamation: Praise to you, O Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory. Gospel: John 9: 1-41 God be with you. And also with you A reading from the gospel of John: As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God s works might be revealed in him. We must do the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man s eyes, saying to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, Is this not the man who used to sit and beg? Some were saying, It is he. Others were saying, No, but it is someone like him. He kept saying, I am the man. But they kept asking him, Then how were your eyes opened? He answered, The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash. Then I went and washed and received my sight. They said to him, Where is he? He said, I do not know. Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Praise to you,o Jesus Christ. Silent Reflection/Discussion Intercessions: From: Sojourners-online. Please sing the response; O God, hear our prayer. O God our mother, we remember that March is Women's History Month. We thank you for Amy, Bernie, Cynthia, Marguerite, Nancy, Rosemary and Trudy who have joined

you for all eternity after having blessed our community while living among us. Thank you for all the cherished women in our lives and in our histories: mothers, sisters, friends, and neighbors, especially those now in our community. O God, may women across the globe continue to be empowered, knowing the love you offer. O God, hear our prayer. Compassionate God, we pray for better access to AIDS medication for the marginalized. Move the hearts of those able to provide funding and resources for lifegiving treatment. We pray for parents, siblings, and neighbors facing this destructive disease. O God, hear our prayer. Dear God, we are often divided, unloving, and inclined to misunderstanding. Make us instead united, loving, and open to learning. May your spirit be in us continually. O God, hear our prayer. Listening God, we persist in our prayers for righteous leadership around the globe. May we continue to hold our governing forces accountable also. O God, hear our prayer. God of Justice, we petition for the end of immigrant day laborers' mistreatment and for the enactment of policies protecting the rights of all workers. We pray for those whose labor causes them nothing but exhaustion. Renew their spirits and allow them to rest. May they be encouraged in their work, knowing there is meaning in each action they take. O God, hear our prayer. John Dear says, "The question should not be 'What would Jesus do?' but rather, more dangerously, 'What would Jesus have me do?' The onus is not on Jesus but on us, for Jesus did not come to ask semi--divine human beings to do impossible things. He came to ask human beings to live up to their full humanity; he wants us to live in the full implication of our human gifts, and that is far more demanding." O God, hear our prayer. Powerful God, give us the strength and determination to help free our sisters and brothers around the world from the chains of poverty. Inspire us to challenge our leaders to make debt relief and fighting poverty a priority, and encourage us to provide relief and charity in all possible ways. O God, hear our prayer. Helping God, today we remember those who are still unemployed and those who have recently lost jobs. May they endure during this time of uncertainty, knowing that each day remains a greater gift than the one before. O God, hear our prayer.

Loving God, may we not just know your love, but live your love in our daily lives. Love for you, love for each other, and love for ourselves -- knowing we are covered by your grace in our efforts. O God, hear our prayer. We now ask those here this evening to put their petitions before you now. Also that those petitions held only in our hearts, be heard too. Sing after each petition O God, hear our prayer. To you, O God, we lift up our souls: Answer us, come to us, be with us. We ask this through Christ, our brother. Amen. Bread Breaking Prayer: We pray, good and gracious God that we might recognize you in this breaking of bread today. It is the bread of heaven the bread of the poor, the bread of our lives. May we recognize you every time we join someone on a journey, every time we share a meal, every time we take bread into our hands. And may this recognition call forth such a joy in us that we might never lose sight of your goodness. May it inspire such love in us that our hearts might continue to burn within us, keeping alive your memory and your promise. And may it provoke such a longing for truth in us that we will never be satisfied until the whole earth experiences your justice and your peace. Let us share this bread and wine as Jesus taught us, knowing that our lives are forever changed by this and every breaking of bread. Let us join hands and sing the Our Father. Bread Breaking Hymn: We Remember (521) Silent Reflection Closing Prayer: Deliver us, Lord, from the darkness of selfishness and sin, and,in your mercy, let the light of your love shine upon us, as we prepare in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen Benediction: Rev. R. J. Fairchild 2005 Go in peace, love and care for one another in Christ's name, and may this blessing of God be with you:

-- May God be in your head and in your understanding, -- in your eyes and in your looking, -- in your mouth and in your speaking, -- in your heart and in your thinking, -- and in your hands and in your acting both now and forevermore. Amen. And May God bless us and keep us. May God s face shine upon us, May God be gracious to us, and grant to us, and to our entire broken world, peace. May the blessing of Almighty God, the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, come upon us and remain with us forever. Amen. Closing Hymn: We Walk by Faith (516) Exchange of Peace: As we exchange a sign of peace we pray that God may open our eyes to see Jesus in one another.
