UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues Mark 16:17 (NIV) WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? The Holy Spirit is included in the Trinity, which is made up of 3 distinct persons: The Father, theson, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a part of the Holy Trinity with the Father and Son. In the Old Testament the Hebrew word (ruwach, pronounced roo'-akh) was used when talking about the Spirit. This word literally means WIND, even the wind associated with a BREATHE! In the New Testament the Greek word (pneuma, pronounced pnyoo'-mah) was used which means the BREATHE or a BREEZE! We can literally think of the Holy Spirit as the"breathe of God!" Although the word Trinity is not mentioned in the Bible, we know God is three in one. There are three very distinct Person that make up the Godhead. They are all equal in every way.

UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Four Types of Baptisms in the Bible Hebrews 6:1-2 (NIV) Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 1. John's Baptism of Repentance Mat 3:11 (NIV) "I baptize you with[1] water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Acts 10:37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- Acts 13:24 (NIV) Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. John's baptism was for those who wanted to repent of their sins. But at that time John was not offering salvation because Jesus had not yet laid down His life. John the Baptist was to prepare the people's hearts for the coming Christ. Acts 19:4 (NIV) Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 2. Baptism into the Body of Christ 1 Cor 12:13 (NIV) For we were ALL baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Eph 1:13-14 (NIV) And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory. Note ALL in 1 Cor 12:13. The Scriptures above show that the basis for inclusion into the Body of Christ is that we believed upon the Gospel. Hence, baptism into the Body of Christ occurs when we are converted. Not only does the Holy Spirit come into our hearts but also we are baptized (immersed) into the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit joins us to Him and in that same act joins (or immerses) us into the Body of Christ. The Body of Christ is the church universal, including all saints in the past, present and future. Some think that the baptism into the Body is equivalent to water baptism. This is not so, because we are saved by our repentance and faith in Christ (cf Eph 1:13), not by water baptism. Eph 1:13 shows we were baptized in the Body when we first believed, not when we were water baptized. 3. Water Baptism Christian baptism is a baptism into the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Only those who have become Christians are water baptized. In other words, water baptism occurs after a person has the Holy Spirit indwelling them. Mat 28:19-20 (NIV) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[1] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Acts 2:38 (NIV) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:41 (NIV) Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 4. Baptism of the Holy Spirit Baptism of the Holy Spirit, a distinct baptism that is different to all the previous three baptisms (A more detailed discussion will be made in following sections) Acts 1:5 (NIV) For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Mat 3:11 (NIV) "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The table below shows the distinctions between Water Baptism, Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Baptism into the Body of Christ (1 Cor 12:13, Mat 3:11). Mat 3:11 (NIV) "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 4 UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Exploring the Baptism of the Holy Spirit John the Baptist predicted that Jesus would be the baptiser in the Holy Spirit (Mt.3:11). Jesus himself promised his disciples that although he was going away, he would send the Holy Spirit to be their Comforter or Helper (Jn. 14:15-18; 25-27; 16:12-15). After Jesus resurrection, he appeared to his disciples and imparted the Holy Spirit to them. I believe it was in this moment that they were born again. The moment we become a Christian we receive the person of the Holy Spirit who comes to live inside of us and help us live the Christian life (Jn.20:19-23). But in addition to this, Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit that would empower them to fulfil God s purpose for their lives (Acts 1:4-8). In order to clearly understand the baptism of the Holy Spirit, it is important to understand the work of the Holy Spirit in relation to conversion as well as the distinction between the various baptisms. These lay the groundwork towards having a correct understanding of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. A. The Holy Spirit in Relation to Conversion We are saved through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives John 3:5-6 (NIV) Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. Titus 3:5-6 (NIV) He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour, The Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit and this is the born again experience. It is impossible to be saved without the Holy Spirit s work upon our lives. The Holy Spirit dwells in the believer Rom 8:9 (NIV) You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. When we accept Jesus as our Saviour, we become Christians. At that point, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives and dwells in us. If we do not have the Holy Spirit in us, we are not Christians. The Holy Spirit takes up a residence in us when we become Christians. The Holy Spirit is our guarantee of eternal inheritance Eph 1:13-14 (NIV) And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory. The Holy Spirit in us is our assurance that we will receive the heavenly inheritance that God has promised us. The Holy Spirit is available only after the glorification of Jesus John 7:39 (NIV) By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. Only after Jesus has been crucified and ascended into heaven is the Holy Spirit given unto men. Until Jesus was glorified, the Holy Spirit did not indwell men. Prior to that time, the Holy Spirit would come upon certain men for a season but not indwell them, such as the Old Testament prophets. B. Various Terminologies Used In Relation to The Baptism of The Holy Spirit Many words are used to describe the experience of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Some of those words are also used to describe the reception of the Holy Spirit to regenerate. The context will provide us the answer to which the Scriptures are referring. 1. Baptized with the Holy Spirit Acts 1:5 (NIV) For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 2. Filled with the Holy Spirit describing the Pentecost incident when the believers were first baptized in the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 (KJV) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 3. Promise of the Father Luke 24:49 (NIV) I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." 4. Clothed with power from on high. Luke 24:49 Gal 4:6 (NIV) Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." 2 Tim 1:14 (NIV) Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Acts 5:32 (NIV) We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." 5. Received the Holy Spirit. Incident in Samaria Acts 8:15-18 (NIV) When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into[1] the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money 4

UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Exploring the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (cont.) Incident in Ephesus Acts 19:2 (NIV) and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 6. Holy Spirit came on or upon them Incident in Ephesus. Acts 19:6-7 (NIV) When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all. Cornelius household. Acts 10:44-46 (NIV) While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." The Holy Spirit coming on the Gentiles were related to the baptism of Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2) by Peter. Acts 11:16-17 (NIV) Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with[1] water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" C. Baptism of the Holy Spirit VS Indwelling of the Holy Spirit at Conversion The Scriptures provide us evidences that show the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience and is for a different purpose to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at the point of conversion. It also shows that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit can occur at the same time as regeneration or subsequently. 1.The Samaritans (Acts 8:12-19). The people in Samaria who believed became Christian and were water baptized. However, they did not receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles John and Peter had to come down specifically from Jerusalem to pray for the people that they might receive the Holy Spirit. We know they were converted because v11 referred to them having `believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized...'. If they were already converted and were water baptized, they should have the Holy Spirit in them. Why should they need to be prayed for to receive the Holy Spirit in v15-16!? Unless the Scriptures was talking about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This shows that the baptism of the Holy Spirit occurred several days or weeks after conversion. 2.The disciples (John 7:39, John 20:19-20, Luke 24:13-31, 36-43, John 20:21-23, Act 2:1-4). 7. Received the gift of the Holy Spirit Acts 1:4 (NIV) On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. Acts 2:38 (NIV) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:20 (NIV) Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! Acts 10:45 (NIV) The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. Acts 11:17 (NIV) So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" These words provide us a clear understanding of how the baptism comes about. It involves the Holy Spirit coming upon, enveloping (clothing) and filling the Christian with power. It is the promised gift that we receive from God. It s important to understand that Baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs only once (Acts 2:4, 4:31). It means to be immersed in the Holy Spirit. The word baptize means to immerse. That's why Jesus spoke also about being clothe or covered with. On the other hand, filling of the Holy Spirit occurs many times (Eph 5:18). In fact, we are commanded to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit. Being filled with the Holy Spirit has to do with our availing ourselves to the Holy Spirit. The word filled is associated with the baptism of the Holy Spirit because to receive the baptism, we actually need to avail ourselves to the Holy Spirit. We will see that at least some of the disciples became Christians many days before the day of Pentecost, where they were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Scriptures prophesied that the Holy Spirit would be given only after Jesus was glorified. But when was Jesus glorified? John 7:39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. In John 20 is recorded an incident about the resurrection of Jesus. In John 20:17, Jesus had not yet ascended into heaven on Sunday morning while John 20:19 suggests He had already done so by Sunday evening. John 20:17 (NIV) Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" John 20:19-20 (NIV) On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Jesus appeared out of nowhere despite the locked doors, for He had His glorified body. Now He allowed them to touch Him, unlike earlier near the tomb - before He was glorified (Luke 24:36-43). In Luke 24:13-31 Jesus appeared to some disciples on a road to Emmaus, ate with them and disappeared, probably during the Sunday afternoon. Hence, after that appearance, the Holy Spirit could have been given at any time. In fact, it occurred that very Sunday evening, in John 20:

UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Exploring the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (cont.) John 20:21-23 (NIV) Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." At that point the Holy Spirit was given unto them as Jesus `breathed on them' and explicitly said, Receive the Holy Spirit. Thus, those disciples first became Christians at that time. Breath is symbolic of the Holy Spirit (Job 33:4, Job 34:14, Ps 146:4 cf the NIV with KJV, Eze 37:5-6). But they only received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at Acts 2. That was 50 days after Jesus died on the cross. 3. The Ephesians (Acts 19:1-7). Why did he ask whether they have received the Holy Spirit? Was Paul trying to ask whether they had become Christians or was he asking whether they had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit? From v3, it shows that Paul must have been informed that these disciples had been water baptized before he asked them whether they had received the Holy Spirit. He initially assumed that they had been Christian water baptized, rather than only with John s baptism. Because of his assumption that they were already Christians, he was very surprised to discover they did not even know about the Holy Spirit. If Paul had thought that they were Christians, why did he ask if they had received the Holy Spirit in the first place? After all, in Paul's theological framework - all Christians have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. It must be because, in the course of his conversation with them, he realized something was amiss experientially with regard to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is the only explanation why he would ask them such a question. Therefore, in Paul's mind the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience from regeneration. *If Paul saw the baptism of the Holy Spirit as occurring during conversion, he would not have asked about receiving the Holy Spirit. He would have asked whether they have repented. But because he realized they were lacking some evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, his initial concern was whether they had been baptized in the Holy Spirit. This showed Paul distinguished between baptism of the Holy Spirit and conversion. Imagine his shock to discover they have not even heard of the Holy Spirit. Immediately, he back pedaled to check what kind of water baptism they had. Then he discovered they were not even saved! Christian already at that point. So why would Ananias pray for Him to receive the Holy Spirit? Because it was in relation to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This occurred 3 days after his experience on the road to Damascus. If Paul was saved on the road to Damascus, then it was 3 days before he was baptized in the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit therefore can occur after or simultaneously with regeneration (Acts 8:12-19, Acts 19:1-7, Act 10:44-48, Act 11:15-17). In the previous point, it was shown that the baptism of the Holy Spirit can occur days after regeneration. The example of Cornelius and his household, however, suggests that it can occur at the same time as conversion. Hence, there is no biblical basis for needing to tarry to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit as held by the old Pentecostals. Acts 10:44-48 (NIV) While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. Acts 11:15-17 (NIV) "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God? D. Relationship Between Repentance, Water Baptism & Baptism of The Holy Spirit Acts 2:38 (NIV) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 22:16 (NIV) And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.' 6 It is also interesting that in the passage, the disciples were stated to be baptized in v5. Immediately v6 follows with Paul laying hands on them and they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This suggests that Paul laid hands on them after the water baptism. F.F. Bruce in the NINCT commentary on Acts, translated verses 5 and 6 to read, When they head this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then, when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them.. This implies they received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit separately from the experience of salvation. 4. Paul (Act 9:3-18). Acts 9:17 (NIV) Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord-- Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Paul on the way to Damascus met with Jesus. The key question is, `Was he converted before Ananias laid hands on him to receive the Holy Spirit?' The key words Ananias used - Brother Saul - showed that Ananias considered Paul a These three aspects are closely related and are meant to be the Christian experience in its fullness during our initiation into the kingdom of God. Repentance leads to regeneration. Water baptism is our first major step of obedience unto God symbolising our cleansing from sin, which is a distinct experience from Baptism of Holy Spirit Cornelius and household (Acts 10:44-48) - In Cornelius and his household they were baptized in Holy Spirit before Peter requested that they be water baptized. Samaritans (Act 8:12-13, Acts 8:14-19) - Samaritans were water baptized before they were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Jesus (Matt 3:16, Mk 1:10-11, John 1:32,33) Mat 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. Dove is symbolic of Holy Spirit. Jesus was water baptized before He was baptized in the Holy Spirit. After that event, we see Jesus performing miracles and taught with great authority. Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the empowering to serve God, after we have been cleansed.

UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Scriptural Evidences of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit In all the relevant incidents recorded, the common pattern is speaking in tongues. While there were other manifestations such as prophesy or praising God, it is speaking in tongues that is the common denominator. Disciples at Day of Pentecost Acts 2:3-4 (NIV) They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Samaria Acts 8:18-19 (NIV) When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money 19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." Cornelius and household Acts 10:46 (NIV) For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said Ephesians Acts 19:6 (NIV) When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. Paul Acts 9:17 (NIV) Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." 1 Cor 14:18 (NIV) I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. Two important issues arise after much of scriptural investigation on the evidences of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It appears that the common sign of baptism of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues, which is considered as evidence of baptism of Holy Spirit by Peter (Act 10:46). So does a person baptised in Holy Spirit need to speak in tongues? No. But if a person does not speak in tongues then there is no outward experience to confirm. Is Spiritual Language Important and is it for today? Spiritual language is Biblical and nothing in Scripture restricts it to the first century. It is not outdated, and many people throughout history and alive today have experienced it. Jesus was the one who introduced it (Mk. 16:17. Acts 2:4). It was the first sign to follow believers (Mt.16:17). It was given at the birth of the church (Acts 2:4). They all (120) spoke in spiritual languages on the first day the church came into being. It was God's idea. He created and endorsed it, obviously for a reason and a purpose. The early church continued to experience it. Paul promoted it (1 Cor. 14:5, 18, 39). He spoke in tongues more than anyone. He told no one to forbid it while encouraging its proper usage. Therefore, it must be important. I believe that every person that is baptized in the Holy Spirit should be able to speak in tongues because there is no Scripture that suggest that a person can be baptized in the Holy Spirit and yet are unable to speak in tongues. Some do not show the evidence in speaking in tongues even though they have been baptized in the Holy Spirit because they lack faith or have doubt to speak forth in tongues. 7

UNDERSTANDING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Spiritual Language: Speaking in Tongues What happened when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers (see Acts 2:1-4)? In addition to a number of supernatural things occurring in the room where they met (wind and fire appearing), the visible or tangible indicator that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit had occurred was that each one of them spoke in other languages (or tongues ). As we read through the story of the first century church, we discover that this was not just a one off event for these 120 disciples. It was normal for believers in the first century (see Acts 8:14-19; 9:17-20 with 1 Cor.14:18. Acts 10:44-48; 19:1-7). The primary and most obvious evidence of being baptised with the Spirit is speaking in tongues. Baptism in water, speaking in tongues and the gifts of the Spirit are a normal part of the Christian experience (although they are not necessary for salvation). The very mention of Speaking Tongues or experience arouses a great variety of thoughts and responses. For those who have experienced it, there is a positive response and usually a testimony of the joy and release that accompanies it. For others who have not experienced it (and even some who Type have) to enter there may text be a somewhat negative response. Other people may feel inferior Type or to second-class enter text as if their faith is suspect because they don t speak in tongues. Maybe they heard tongues used at an inappropriate time or in an inappropriate manner. So the responses are broad ranging from curiosity to animosity. To start with, the term itself, though clearly Biblical, tends to get the whole experience off to a bad start. Our tongues are not the most attractive part of our body. We do use them to speak with but generally we try to hide them away (unless we are rudely poking out our tongue!). So what is speaking in tongues? The word tongues in Greek is glossa and it means language. Therefore, it is not gibberish. The Greek word implies an actual language, so a better term is spiritual language. 1. It is also usually used in the plural showing that any individual can speak in more than one tongue In Acts 2, 120 disciples were present. Vs lists about 15 geographical areas. These people heard their own languages (dialects) being spoken. Some people have scrutinized tapes and concluded, "This does not contain the usual structures of recognizable speech." But with over 6000 known languages on earth, who is to say? Even a linguistic expert wouldn't have a basic grasp of 100 languages (see 1 Cor.14:10-12). Paul refers to the languages of angels, only understood in heaven (1 Cor.13:1). An unknown tongue refers to the understanding of the speaker not necessarily the language spoken. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's not known somewhere on earth. 1 Cor 12:10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 1 Cor 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 1 Cor 14:6 (NIV) Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? Corinthians 14:2 (NIV) For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. 2. Tongues can be an earthly or heavenly language 1 Cor 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 1 Cor 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. 1 Cor 14:2 shows that the tongues can also be a language other than an earthly language. It is also speaking to God in a spiritual language. Usually when we first start speaking in tongues, the vocabulary may appear limited but with regular use, it usually increases in variety. Just like a child learning to speak soon increases their vocabulary with use, so it appears with speaking in tongues. God may also give us different tongues or languages so do not be surprised if the sound may change at times. 3. Speaking in tongues is a sign Mark 16:17 (KJV) And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 1 Cor 14:22 (NIV) Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. It is a sign to nonbeliever of a divine being and His judgement upon them. Its impact comes when it is interpreted. 4. Two different kinds of speaking in tongues INDIVIDUALLY PURPOSE Self edification (1 Cor 14:2,4) Evidence of baptism of Holy Spirit. WHO CAN USE IT? DOES IT NEED INTERPRETATION? HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SPEAK AT A TIME? CAN THEY SPEAK AT THE SAME TIME? CORPORATELY Edify others in the church (1 Cor 12:4-7) All believers Only to those whom the Spirit (Mk 16:17, Jude 20, 1 Cor 14:4) gives to. (1 Cor 12:30) Jude 1:20 - But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. No Day of Pentecost (Act 2:4) Ephesians (Acts 19:6) Cornelius (Act 10) Many people 120 people Act 2 12 people Act 19 Whole household Act 10 Yes (1 Cor 14:27-28) 2-3 people in a meeting, one after another. (1 Cor 14:27) Yes (Act 2, 10, 19) No, one at a time (1 Cor 14:27) The individual and corporate speaking in tongues are similar in form but different in function i.e Teaching VS the gift of teaching. Likewise, Gift of speaking in tongues is purposed for corporate ministry where as speaking in tongues is purposed personal. (More questions about Speaking in Tongues See Appendix)

The PURPOSE of Baptism of the Holy Spirit Unfortunately, there has often been a strong emphasis on the initial receiving of spiritual language but a weak focus on the continuous use of it in our lives. In the book of 1 Corinthians Paul spends a fair bit of time giving instruction about spiritual language. Paul makes a clear distinction between spiritual language used in public (the gift of tongues ) with the necessary interpretation, and spiritual language for private use. Not all have the gift of tongues (1 Cor. 12:30). However, we believe that spiritual language for personal use is available for everyone (1 Cor. 14:5). What is the purpose of spiritual language? 1. Greater power to be witnesses (Acts 1:8, 17:6, Mat 5:16, Jn 1:12) Acts 1:8 (NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Jesus did not allow the disciples to witness of Him until they were baptized in the Holy Spirit. They were to receive dunamis - raw power. The statement to be witnesses is a very broad statement since to be witnesses involves our whole lives. It is intended to produce a quality of life that Jesus spoke of in Matthew 5:16. It is intended to help us experientially. When we become Christian we receive the right to be a child of God. But this identity is not the same as power. Before the day of Pentecost the disciples had authority. On Pentecost the disciples received power. The effect was the whole city was shaken. There was great spiritual impact (Acts 17:6) (NIV) 5. To reveal mysteries and God s will to Us. Acts 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Through the use of our spiritual language, the Holy Spirit can reveal mysteries to us and helps us to understand the will of God better (Act 13:2,1 Cor.14:2. See also Mt. 13:11. Rom.16:25-27). The Holy Spirit wants to show us spiritual things (1 Cor.2:7-16). Use your spiritual language and ask God to reveal his mysteries to you by the Spirit. 6. Enables us to worship more in the Spirit John 4:22-24 (NIV) You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." Eph 5:18-19 (NIV) Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, As the baptism of the Holy Spirit opens us into the supernatural realm, the worshipper will no longer be satisfied with merely human forms of worship. They will seek to touch the throne of God. 2. The reality of Christ in our lives John 15:26 (NIV) "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. The baptism of the Holy Spirit leads us into experiencing a greater reality of Christ working in our lives. 3. More effective prayer Rom 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. Eph 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Jude 1:20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor 14:14-15 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. To help us communicate with God. We desire to be closer to God, to draw near to him and express the deep cry of our hearts to him both in prayer and worship. Spiritual language helps us to speak directly with God (1 Cor.14:2). We are praying by the Spirit and therefore according to God s will. He hears and understands us (1 Cor. 14: Rom.8: Eph.6:18). It also opens additional avenues of prayer such as praying with tongues, through exercising word of knowledge, etc. 4. To edify or build ourselves up Not only does a spiritual language help us communicate with God, it also helps us to edify for building ourselves up (1 Cor.14:3-5, Jude 20). Our spiritual language enables us to charge our spiritual batteries as it were. You may be facing a difficult situation, needing strength against temptation, experiencing some spiritual warfare, needing power to do God's will or needing grace during a trial. Build yourself up. Strengthen yourself through the Spirit. Use your spiritual language and train yourself to become strong in spirit. The power is his, the choice is yours Able to use the gifts of the Holy Spirit more powerfully The Holy Spirit comes to give us the power and release it within us as well as give us ability to do God s will (Acts 1:8; 4:31. Eph.3:16). The empowering of the Christian with the baptism of the Holy Spirit compared to the Christian who has not experienced this may be illustrated by two gardeners; one with a lawn mower and another with shearers. The one with the lawn mower represents the Holy Spirit baptized Christian while the other represents the one who has not. The gardener with the lawn mower can mow a lawn faster than the one with the shearers, if all other things are equal. However, if the gardener with the lawn mower is lazy and hardly uses his lawn mower, the other with the shearers can get the job done first. On the other hand, if the gardener with the lawn mower is careless, he could also mow over the garden beds and cause damage much faster than the gardener with only the shearers. Hence, while having the power of the Holy Spirit, we could serve God more effectively, we could also do more damage faster as seen in the Corinthian church 1 Cor 12:8-10). 8. Greater love for and understanding of Bible John 14:26 (NIV) But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. For example, Peter. Before Pentecost, he did not display a great understanding of God's word. But after Pentecost He could suddenly quote from the Old Testament to prove an important point of fulfillment of prophecy. 9. Greater understanding about spiritual warfare and become stronger to fight against it (2 Cor 10:4-5, Eph 6:11-18). 2 Cor 10:4-5 (NIV) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. The baptism of the Holy Spirit opens us into a new realm in the Spirit and helps us to be more aware about spiritual issues and strongholds. 10. Importance of NOT neglecting the baptism of the Holy Spirit. If God has made this available to us, who are we to say we don't need it? If we seriously desire to serve God, we will avail ourselves to every gift He has made available to us.

HOW to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit 1. Believe that God wants to fill you with his Spirit Acts 2: Lk.11:13 This is shown by the example of the Day of Pentecost and Cornelius household. Every believer who seeks can receive it. God can give it directly to us (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:44) Acts 2:39 (NIV) The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call." 2. Prepare your heart by having a clear conscience 1 Jn.3:21-22 Forgive others (Mt. 18:32-33; 10:8. Lk.12:48. Eph. 4:30-32) Remove bitterness and resentment 3. Ask for the baptism of the Holy Spirit Lk.11:9, 13. Jn.7:37-39 Must we seek God for long periods of time to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit? The only incident where Christians had to tarry was in Acts 1. In all other cases, the Holy Spirit was given simultaneously at conversion or when hands were laid upon the people. There is no indication of having to wait. 4. Have someone pray with you and lay their hands on you if necessary Acts 8:17-18, 19:6 The example of the Ephesians and Samaritans. It appears that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is aided by the laying on of hands, but it is not essential. 5. Give praise to God with your voice (Lk.24:49-53) and by faith speak forth in a new language as the Holy Spirit gives you the words (Acts 2:4). Decide to open your mouth and speak a new language. 6. Continue to use your new spiritual language on a regular basis and believe for God to increase the flow of His Spirit within you. A gift is to be used not just received and put away. Practical Steps to Being Baptized in the Holy Spirit 1. Have right heart attitudes Hunger after it Mat 5:6 (NIV) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. John 7:37-39 (NIV) On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[1] the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. Regard it as essential After all, Jesus commanded His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they had received the baptism. Eph 5:17-19 (NIV) Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord Do not fear or doubt Doubt destroys faith. If we ask without faith, God usually does not answer. (Luke 11:13; Jam 1:6-7) Ask because we want to do God's will. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not for showing off. 1 Cor 13:1-3 (NIV) If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 2. Be sure about what the Bible teaches Gal 3:2 (NIV) I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? James 1:6-7 (NIV) But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; We need to have conviction. Doubt can hinder us from receiving God s gift. A Few Things to Note: Don't speak in English or any other language you know for it will stop the speaking in tongues. Focus on God. Holy Spirit will not move our tongues nor will He make the sound. We have to move our tongues - we speak. But God will give us the words supernaturally through our spirit. Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He will not force us Confess of any sin Psa 66:18 (NIV) If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; Sin may hinder our prayers for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Sin can include possessing idols or any charms, etc. 4. Pray with faith Acts 8:15 (NIV) When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 5. Begin to speak in tongues by faith 1 Cor 14:15 (NIV) So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. Speaking in tongues involves our will as well. It is an act of our will to move our tongues.

appendix Discuss the Arguments Against The Baptism of The Holy Spirit & Speaking in Tongues A. Typical Arguments Opposing the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Following are typical arguments used against the baptism of the Holy Spirit. 1. Normative practice for the church cannot be derived from Acts unless it is explicitly confirmed elsewhere in the Scriptures. This argument unnecessarily restricts the interpretation of Scripture and is neither logical in its delineation nor supported by internal biblical evidence of interpretation as discussed earlier. The Scriptures does not appear to make any such distinctions, or indeed of any kind, of itself. 2. Samaritan incident was a once-off special work of the Holy Spirit. Some scholars argue that the Samaritan incident was unique because the disciples were in a transitional period between covenants. The uniqueness lies in the fact that they received salvation yet did not receive the indwelling Holy Spirit. They argued that God did this to show the Jews that He wanted the Samaritans included in the church. That God used this as a supernatural sign to convince the Jewish Christians. Furthermore, God also wanted the Samaritans to understand the power and authority of the apostles. These arguments fail on several grounds. a. If the Samaritans were such a special case, why did not God do a similar work with the Gentiles in Acts 10 instead of just causing them to speak in tongues and prophesy? Having a similar time lapse of several days between conversion and the indwelling of the Spirit would have made the same point. Indeed, one would have expected that the Gentiles should require an even more special treatment since the Jews despised them even more than the Samaritans. In Acts 10, the Gentile believers did not have to wait to receive the Holy Spirit. b. Why did God specifically send only Philip who was not an apostle, when He could have sent some apostles with him to seal the apostolic authority as God did with the Gentiles? This would have made it unnecessary for a team of apostles to be sent down subsequently. c. If the apostles or Jewish Christians had such difficulty with Samaritans becoming Christians, why did the apostles not haul Philip up for questioning as they did with Peter over the Gentiles? The implication is that the apostles had no difficulty at all with what happened. The Scriptures give no hint at all that the apostles had any difficulties with the Samaritans becoming Christians. In fact, evidences throughout Scripture show that the difficulty was always with the Gentiles as they did not follow the Mosaic Law, unlike the Samaritans. d. How could the reception of the Holy Spirit only to dwell with the Samaritan at the point of conversion be a supernatural sign, as suggested by Simon's response? For experience today indicates that on conversion there is usually no outward manifestation. Therefore, nobody would be able to see or hear anything. However, it is obvious that something supernatural happened to the Samaritans, of a magnitude that caught Simon's interest. It is likely that God had caused the Samaritans to prophesy and speak in tongues. That would be enough of a supernatural sign to the apostles as it was for Peter with Cornelius household. 3. The Pentecost event was a once-off special work of the Holy Spirit. The argument is that God was giving the Holy Spirit to the church for the first time, hence the time span between salvation and reception of Holy Spirit. It is not meant to be normative. This argument is weak because there is sufficient evidence from the Samaritan (Acts 8) and Ephesian (Acts 19) incidents to support the subsequent baptism of the Holy Spirit. 4. If baptism of the Holy Spirit was the norm then why was the baptism of the Holy Spirit not recorded following every conversion? In water baptism it was not recorded every time that the believers were immersed in water, but it is clear from an overall reading of Scriptures that this was being done. The reason it was not recorded was because it was the accepted practice and the writer of Acts need not describe its occurrence every time. 11 Similarly with the breaking of bread for communion. It was recorded several times but not always. So too with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The only time these were recorded were to highlight some new group of people had received salvation from God. Note these groups were the Jewish believers (Acts 2), the Samaritans (Acts 8), the Gentiles (Acts 10) and an unidentified group of John the Baptist's disciples (Acts 19). It is likely that Luke emphasized these groups to demonstrate that salvation and the Spirit was sovereignty made available to all men. Once he had made the point about each group, he did not bother to mention the outward evidences of the baptism of the Holy Spirit in relation to those groups again, such as the 3000 Jews who got saved in Acts 2:41.

appendix Discuss the Arguments Against The Baptism of The Holy Spirit & Speaking in Tongues B. Common Questions & Misunderstandings about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit & Speaking in Tongues 1. The gifts of the Holy Spirit have ceased and were only for the time of the apostles (1 Cor 13:8-12). This is the cessationist theory by some theologians. It is obviously incorrect because history shows clearly that tongues and other gifts have not ceased. While the manifestations of the gifts were greatly reduced after the first century, there were still recorded incidences. Historical evidence suggests otherwise. Historical examples of speaking in tongues AD Iranaeus and Kaparleon wrote about the Montanist movement who exercised spiritual gifts such as speaking in tongues. Tertullian, a brilliant theologian of that time joined the Montanists. The church leaders at that time considered the Montanists to be heretics because of their emphasis on spiritual gifts. AD258 Cyprum, bishop at Carthage, before he was matyred wrote about the saints who spoke ecstasies such as the LORD gave. AD300 Christendom of Constantinople wrote whoever was baptised in the Apostolic days he straight away spoke in tongues... without any clear training in Scriptures. AD1520 Martin Luther - prophet, evangelist and speaker in tongues. AD Francis Xavier experienced speaking in tongues. AD Hugoinots spoke about receiving the gifts of tongues and prophesy. AD1739 John and Charles Wesley preached on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and witnessed the speaking in tongues. AD1750 Thomas Walsh wrote ` this morning the LORD gave me a language I know of not..' AD1831 The Quakers wrote `while waiting upon the LORD in silence for many hours, we received the pouring of the Spirit upon us and our hearts, and hearts were glad and our mouths loosed and our mouths opened as we spoke in new tongues as the LORD gave us utterance. AD1834 Edward Irwing received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. AD1878 Peter McKenzie wrote `.. the place was packed and the Holy Spirit came and the gift of tongues was surely granted..' 1882 DL Moody received the gift of tongues according to John Davison the designer of the Schofield Bible. Davison was an acquaintance of D.L. Moody. Furthermore, some cessantionists used history to argue that these gifts have ceased. Then why do they not use the same approach to record that at present, these gifts are functioning in many parts of the Body of Christ? The reports of the manifestations of the Holy Spirit are not restricted to some exclusive cult groups who psychologically hype themselves to believe that such things really occurred. Rather it is prevalent amongst Pentecostal and charismatic groups across the breadth of this world, involving tens of millions of Christians. The world's largest church in Korea is Pentecostal. The cessanionists also argue on the basis of 1 Cor 13:8-10 that perfection has arrived in the form of God's communication to us, which is the Bible. Therefore, all spiritual gifts have ceased Cor 13:8-12 (NIV) Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. {9} For we know in part and we prophesy in part, {10} but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. {11} When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. {12} Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. However, they misinterpret the context of the entire chapter. Those verses are referring to the return of Jesus when we shall be made perfect. For none of us know fully yet even with the Bible, nor prophesy fully yet, nor are we all so mature in Christ, nor do we yet see God face to face. Thus spiritual gifts will cease when we are made perfect, but not before then.

appendix Discuss the Arguments Against The Baptism of The Holy Spirit & Speaking in Tongues 2. Speaking in tongues is found also in other religions and cults. Therefore it cannot be a sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Exo 7:11, Mat 24:11, 1 John 4:1) Mat 24:24 For false Christ and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible. Just because there are counterfeits does not mean we should throw away the real thing. Paul never taught that the Corinthians should beware about counterfeit tongues. In fact, he encouraged them to speak in tongues. 3. Speaking in tongues is not for everyone (1 Cor 12:30, 1 Cor 14:27, Acts 19:2, Acts 2:38-39, 1 Cor 14:5). Scriptures give ample evidence that speaking in tongues in relation to the baptism of the Holy Spirit is for every believer. Mark 16:17 (NIV) And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; In the various incidences recorded, people from different groups such as the Jews, Samaritans and Gentiles were baptized in the Holy Spirit and in 2 of the cases clearly spoke in tongues while in the Samaritans incident it was implied. Furthermore, all the people in the groups received the ability to speak in tongues. It was not limited to certain individuals only (Acts 2:4, 10:44-46) Acts 19:6-7 (NIV) When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all. The arguments that speaking in tongues is not for everyone based on Scriptures such as 1 Cor 12:10, are not valid because those Scriptures refer to the corporate gift of speaking in tongues. 4. Speaking in tongues is not mentioned in the epistles. Rom 8:26, 1 Cor 12-14, Eph 6:18, Jude 1:20 Praying in the Spirit is equivalent to praying in tongues as Paul implies in 1 Cor 14:15. Rom 8:26 (NIV) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. Jude 1:20 (NIV) But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 5. Speaking in tongues was only for speaking in many languages to spread the Gospel rapidly to every nation (1 Cor 14:2, 23-25). But Paul says that speaking in tongue was to speak to God. Even in Act 2:11 the disciples were praising God in tongues - not preaching the Gospel. That is why Peter had to stand up and preach the Gospel after that. In fact, Peter spoke in only one language and obviously many thousands of people understood him and repented that day. This suggests that it would have been unnecessary to preach the Gospel in many languages to that crowd that day. No where in Scriptures does it encourage us to preach the Gospel by using tongues. That is not to say it does not happen, but it is not the norm. Speaking in tongues is for personal or corporate edification, or to serve as a sign for the unbeliever. 6. When people speak in tongues it means they empty their minds (1 Cor 14:15). This is not true. Bible does not encourage us to empty our minds. In fact, when we pray in tongues, we are also encouraged to pray with our minds. 1 Cor 14:15 (NIV) So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. To speak in tongues does not mean we surrender our minds or slip into some emotional frenzy. But it is a conscious choice to allow the Holy Spirit to use our tongues. Even then, we can choose to stop speaking in tongues at any time or control the volume and intensity. Scriptures show that speaking in tongues, just like prophecy, is still under our control (1 Cor 14:32) 7. Can one praise God with tongues? (1 Cor 14:14-17) Yes. We can praise God and also sing to God with tongues. 8. Why does the interpretation of tongues at times seem very much longer or shorter than the actual speaking in tongues. Because it is an interpretation, not translation. By the Spirit of God, the interpreter may expand upon the message or shorten it. 9. Are those who speak in tongues more spiritual? Speaking in tongues is no indicator of one s spirituality. In fact, the church in Corinth spoke in tongues profusely and yet were obviously very carnal in their thinking. So much that Paul spent much of his epistle correcting their attitudes and wrong thinking. However, being baptized in the Holy Spirit usually helps a person s spiritual growth because they experience God in a more real way. 13

appendix Discuss the Arguments Against The Baptism of The Holy Spirit & Speaking in Tongues C. Some of the Major Issues of Speaking in Tongues in 1 Corinthians To understand the issue of speaking in tongues and its use in the church, it is necessary to understand some of the major problems regarding the Corinthian church. 1.They had worldly wisdom The Corinthian church thought they were wise in their own eyes but Paul rebuked them because their wisdom did not come from God. They became arrogant and did things their own way and misused certain gifts given to the church by the Holy Spirit, especially speaking in tongues. 1 Cor 3:18-19 (NIV) Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness 1 Cor 4:10 (NIV) We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! 2. Wrong understanding about spirituality Their measure of spirituality is the ability to exercise spiritual gifts, eg: speaking in tongues 1 Cor 13:1-3. Paul pointed out that true spirituality is measured according to the character as evidenced by love (1 Cor 13:4-8). They thought that they have now achieve a spiritual state that no longer binds them to the laws of this material world. That is why they tolerated sexual immorality (1 Cor 5, 1 Cor 6:12-20). They thought that what they did with their bodies no longer matters. They thought that they are no longer under the judgement of God (1 Cor 10:1-13). And speaking in tongues is the evidence of their new spiritual stature. Which is why they apparently used it profusely in their meetings to the exclusion of prophesy, and possibly to the point of disorder. Selfishness leading to division and disorder - They were forming factions to certain apostles (1 Cor 1:10-12). They were not having communion in a communal spirit (1 Cor 11:18, 20-22) Misuse of tongues in church - They were eager to exercise spiritual gifts (1 Cor 14:12) and were obviously using tongues in the wrong context. They were speaking in tongues for the large part of the service (1 Cor 14:19). They had no concern for the rest of the church except to flout their spirituality. 3. Understanding the context of 1 Cor Cor 12:7 (NIV) Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 1 Cor 12:27-28 (NIV) Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. {28} And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 1 Cor 14:4-5 (NIV) He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. {5} I would like every one of you to speak in tongues[1], but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues[2], unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. 1 Cor 14:12 (NIV) So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church. 1 Cor 14:19 (NIV) But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. The whole context of chapters 12 to 14 is the use of spiritual gifts in the corporate meeting, with particular regard to speaking in tongues. We should note that Paul skilfully starts with gifts in general, to provide a foundational understand of the place of the gift of speaking in tongues in relation to other gifts. He then emphasises on the correct motivation for exercising such gifts. Then he narrows in on the problem in Corinth, which is the misuse of tongues in the corporate meeting and deals with it. 4. Understanding the purpose of using tongues in the church (1 Cor 14:3-5, 8-13, 16-19, 28) The purpose is to edify the church and to do so it must be intelligible. Thus the person who speaks in tongues must pray that it will be interpreted. If there is no interpreter then he should keep silent. 14

appendix Discuss the Arguments Against The Baptism of The Holy Spirit & Speaking in Tongues 5.Understanding 1 Cor 12:10 The verse is talking about the gift of speaking in tongues that is to be used for the benefit of the corporate gathering. This speaking in tongue is different from the personal use of tongues. 6.Understanding 1 Cor 12:29-30 Paul is saying - do all have the gift of speaking in tongues? Of course not. Because there is a diversity that the Spirit gives. So not everyone has that gift for the edification of the church. And this is to be distinguished from the personal ability to speak in tongues. 7. Understanding about the personal use of tongues (Acts 2:3-12, 10:44-46, 19:6-7) We will demonstrate that the speaking in tongues as recorded in Acts is not the same as the gift of speaking in tongues as discussed in 1 Cor How do we do that? By showing that the 3 criteria that Paul set for speaking in tongues in the church was not applied to the incidences in Acts. The 3 criteria were - not speaking simultaneously, only 2 or 3 persons at most, it requires interpretation and must edify the church. 8. In Acts 2, 10 and 19 whole masses of people spoke in tongues simultaneously and with no interpretation Obviously it was not meant to edify the congregation. Its purpose was as an initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and for self-edification. Thus the personal use of tongues should not be confused with the gift of speaking in tongues, which is intended for corporate ministry. 9.The personal use of tongues is to be encouraged and is useful for building up our spirit man We should pray in tongues often. 10. Proper use of tongues in the church service Paul's concern was for abuse of tongues because the congregation was probably coming up and speaking in tongues simultaneously during the service without interpretation. The result was no one was edified since no one understood was being said. Does that mean we should never speak in tongues in the church if there was no interpretation? No. We can speak in tongues even if there is no interpretation under certain circumstances such as: Prayer meetings where at times we are praying to God and not for the purpose of speaking to one another for edification. The question to ask is `Are we communicating to God or to man?.' During worship where we are worshipping God in spirit and the purpose is not to instruct others. When we are praying for others or to God by ourselves and the purpose is not to instruct. However, we do not encourage the whole church to speak in tongues at the same time during the Sunday service, as do some Pentecostal churches because unbelievers may think we are mad (1 Cor 14:23). 15 references Dick Iverson.
