1 Volume 93 January 2015 Issue #1 During the recent XXIV General Synod which was held in Erie, Pennsylvania, the delegates and guests had an opportunity to share their thoughts and dreams for the Polish National Catholic Church and also to find some concrete ways to bring them to reality. All of us, including me, were on a real high upon returning from the Synod. In my view this was one of the most positive meetings of the Church in many years and it was in no small way due to the input of the synod delegates who took their roles seriously and completed the work which was placed before them. But of course we are also realists and we know that just good intentions and thoughts will not accomplish what we desire to happen. We now have to turn all of these wonderful ideas and positive plans into action. This work has begun with the calling of the Future Directions Committee. It begins there, but it will also need many others, from every parish, to bring it all to a final goal. The Future Directions Committee has chosen for the year 2015 a theme of Regeneration. Now the concept of regeneration should be something that is, at least, somewhat familiar to all Polish National Catholics. In the Confession of Faith of the Polish National Catholic Church which was accepted at the 2015: A Year of Regeneration Most Rev. Anthony Mikovsky Prime Bishop III General Synod in 1914 we read: I believe in Jesus Christ, the Saviour and Spiritual Regenerator of the world. Our Catechism reminds us that Jesus Christ is the Regenerator because He spiritually renews our life. It is within the next article of the same Confession of Faith that we see, in part, how this is accomplished. I believe that this Nazarene Master revealed His Divine Mission on earth through His life, an unsurpassed ideal of goodness, wisdom and self-sacrifice for others, especially sinful and disinherited people; that by His work, teaching and sacrificial death, He became the glowing ember of a new life of mankind, taking its beginning and deriving its strength and fullness in knowing God, loving Him and fulfilling His Holy Will. We also know that our Lord passed all of this on to His Church, the Body of Christ in the world today. So now we, as Polish National Catholics, must also be concerned with the work of regeneration. We must have the unsurpassed ideal of goodness and selfsacrifice for others. This means that each and every bishop, each and every pastor, each and every Parish Committee member, each and every parishioner, needs to play a role in bringing about a renewed and active spiritual life in the parishes and the entire Church. (Continued on Page 2.)

2 2 God s Field January 2015 (2015: A Year of Regeneration - Continued from Page 1.) To this end the Future Directions Subcommittee has taken the decisions of the delegates of the General Synod and put forward a plan for In this Year of Regeneration the entire Church will work to accomplish actions in line with the five themes that we determined by the Synod. We will do this to regenerate the spiritual life of our parishes and our Church. This plan contains eight (8) components as goals to accomplish. 1) Universal welcome packet for all parishes of the P.N.C.C.; 2) Greater understanding of the Church Solemnities; 3) Lenten Day of Retreat; 4) Implementation of Commissioning Services; 5) Online Education Course for Clergy; 6) Database of P.N.C.C. males for Sacred Vocations; 7) Pamphlet for Humble Shepherds 2015 and; 8) Completion of at least two community services projects. A lot of information on all the these topics has already been distributed to the synod delegates and pastors via in December. The reaction to this list, I m sure, can be varied throughout the Church. From overwhelmed to seeing it as a great challenge in following our Lord Jesus Christ. But we must remember that our synod delegates have plotted out the course for our journey. Each of us must begin by taking our first steps. As a first step, I encourage you, if you have not already done so, to become a member of our Future Direction list by sending your address to FutureDirecton@pncc.org. By sending your you will get information from the Committee as it becomes available and also it is a place to share what your parish is doing. I, likewise, encourage each parish at its annual meeting, as well as each Parish Committee, to spend some time in discussion on what they will accomplish this year. How will your parish participate in this work of the entire Church? out via to the Church, so that this can be accomplished with a minimum of planning. In this way, during the upcoming season of Lent throughout the Church, Polish National Catholics will be gathered in prayer, fellowship and recollection of the great things that Jesus Christ has done for us. Each parish should consider how it is presenting itself to its local community. In the universal welcome packet that was sent out, we have ideas for a consistent message of what the P.N.C.C. is, across the entire Church. Hopefully all parishes can also begin thinking about ways in which the entire congregation can get behind projects to reach out into their own communities. There are many, many ways in which this can be done; too many to list, but certainly each parish can accomplish something. And I certainly know that many parishes are already doing great things. So again I encourage you all. Pray, think, plan and get involved. Pray for the Year of Regeneration, that what was begun at our Synod will continue to take root and enliven the work and spiritual lives of our parishes. Think, as our synod delegate did, about how best each parish can accomplish these goals this year. Plan the ways in which your parish can begin. And finally get involved. Ultimately the Church is the Body of Christ, and that of course means each one of you. The Church needs you to help in accomplishing the work of Jesus Christ. Let s pray hard. Absolutely. But let s also work hard to regenerate our parishes and our spiritual lives. In particular, I encourage the pastors, to plan and execute the goal of a Lenten retreat either on the parish or seniorate level. A guideline has been sent

6 6 God s Field January 2015 Bishop Joseph Padewski - Martyr - January 2, 2015 At the 24th General Synod, Mrs. Anna Czop made the Synod aware that there was a museum for the victims of Communism. This resulted in a request by the Synod that the Polish National Catholic Church Commission of History and Archives look into how information about Bishop Padewski could be provided for display at the museum. An investigation found that there was a virtual museum on the Internet. It was established by The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation established by an Act of Congress in The Foundation is raising money to construct a brick and mortar museum. Since their beginning, they have erected a monument in Washington, D. C. Their website contains three victims articles; one from Vietnam; one from Romania and one from Hungary. I did not find a listing of the millions of victims of Communism. The following article will be submitted for inclusion in their virtual museum. It was prepared using information included on the Internet, including the website created and maintained by Rev. James Konicki, now named, (Was a) Deacons Blog, [ konicki.com/blog2]. If you haven t visited it yet, please do. You will learn a lot about our Church. Joseph Padewski was born on March 19, 1894 in Antoniewo, Poland. He emigrated to the United States in 1913 and moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he came into contact with the Polish National Catholic Church. In 1916 he entered Savonarola Polish National Catholic Church Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood on December 16, 1919 by Prime Bishop Francis Hodur. He celebrated his first Mass at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Plymouth, Pennsylvania. In 1931 Father Padewski was sent to Poland as part of the Polish National Catholic Church s mission of evangelization in Poland and to work on consolidating the structures of the P.N.C.C. (Polskiego Narodowego Kościoła Katolickiego) in Poland. He was appointed assistant to Bishop Leon Grochowski. In January 1933 at a meeting of the P.N.C.C. Supreme Council in Poland, chaired by Bishop Hodur, Father Padewski was appointed administrator of the PNKK in Poland. It was designated as a Missionary Diocese under the jurisdiction of the Polish National Catholic Church in the United States. Father Padewski was elected a candidate for the episcopate at the Second Synod of the diocese held in Warsaw, Poland in June, He was consecrated bishop on August 26, 1935 at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Cathedral in Scranton, PA. Bishop Joseph Padewski returned to Poland at the start of the Second World War. The Nazi Occupation Government declared in 1940 that only those religious denominations which were recognized by the previous Polish Government would be tolerated. The Polish National Catholic Church was not recognized by the Polish Government prior to One of Bp. Padewski s first acts was to convince the Nazi Occupation Government that the Polish National Catholic Church was a member of the Utrecht Union of Old Catholic Churches and that it is the same Catholic

7 Volume 93, Issue No. 1 7 Church as recognized in Germany. Bishop Erwin Kreuzer of Bonn, of the Old Catholic Bishop of Germany, supported Bishop Padewski. Through these efforts the Church was given recognition and permitted to exist in Nazi occupied Poland along with other bona fide Christian Churches. The Polish National Catholic Church existed with great difficulty, no publications or seminary studies were permitted. Many parishes ceased to exist because their priests were either murdered or sent to concentration camps. Before the Second World War the P.N.C.C. had 100,000 members: 52 parishes, 12 affiliate churches, and 52 priests in Poland. On September 1, 1939 Nazi Germany invaded Poland from the west and subsequently the Soviet Union invaded from the east. The losses to Poland and to the Church in Poland during the Nazi German and Soviet occupation were devastating. Over 6 million Poles died including 3 million Polish citizens of the Jewish faith. Many priests were sent to concentration camps. In all, 28% of P.N.C.C. priests were killed. During this horrible time Bishop Padewski continued to minister as a true servant of God. The bishop s fidelity to the Gospel caused his arrest by the Gestapo in September He was interred initially at the Montelupich prison in Krakow and then sent to Oflag VII-D, a prisoner-of-war camp in Tittmoning, Germany for officers and British and American citizens. In March 1944, after eighteen months, the Bishop was released in a prisoner of war exchange arranged by the Swiss Red Cross. He then returned to the United States. During the Spring of 1946 Bishop Padewski returned to Poland to resume his episcopal duties in Krakow. Shortly after his return, the Soviet Union completed its takeover of Poland and asserted Communist control. In this atmosphere of Stalinist terror, Bishop Padewski was arrested by the Communist Secret Police (UB) in Warsaw on January 17, He was held at their prison on Rakowieckiej Street, where he was constantly interrogated and beaten. United States Embassy Representatives were not permitted to visit him during his internment, despite numerous attempts. Bishop Padewski died on May 10, 1951 as a result of secret police questioning and maltreatment. He was not given a proper church funeral nor was his body permitted to be sent to the United States by the Communist government. His remains are in Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw. 8 8 God s Field January 2015 National United Choirs Music Scholarship Sunday January 25, 2015 Make a joyful shout to God all the earth! Sing out the honor of His name; make His praise glorious Psalm 66: 1,2 The last Sunday of January has been set aside by Synodal resolution as Music Scholarship Sunday, which puts special emphasis on the Music Scholarship program of the National United Choirs of the Polish National Catholic Church. It is the Sunday when the choirs, organists, directors and choir members should be recognized for their contributions to the music ministry of our church. It is also the Sunday when we look to the future and identify those that we hope will be part of the music ministry of the P.N.C.C. Music provides inspiration and pleasure to both the musician and the listener. It is the calling of every organist, choir member, accompanist, and musician to enhance the liturgy of the Mass and special services. We encourage you to have your budding musicians play either for Mass on this Sunday or in your church hall afterwards. The Music Scholarship program has a number of endowments, awards that are available to members of the P.N.C.C., whether it is via instrument or voice, regardless of age. It is our duty to encourage and reach those individuals who have the potential and love of music. With encouragement and praise, the rewards are many for all of the P.N.C.C. The Scholarship Program has a web site, nucmusicscholarship.weebly.com where any interested person can find out about the program its history, awards, and latest winners. Downloads for the next application process and potential music to perform are also available on this site. Past financial support from the faithful of the P.N.C.C. has provided us with the vehicle to make awards annually to deserving applicants. It is through those continued donations that we have made financial assistance available to those who are interested in serving the music ministry. We offer our sincere thanks for what has been given to the Music Scholarship Fund. Since 1966 the Scholarship Program has awarded 1037 members of the P.N.C.C. a financial incentive to continue to pursue their musical studies. To date we have awarded $288,035! It is a great feeling to know that several of the original music scholarship recipients are still active in the music ministry of the P.N.C.C. over four decades later! Indeed the program has succeeded! We hope your parish will give generously on Scholarship Sunday, encourage applicants for the program and remember our church musicians in your prayers. It is imperative that any funds be submitted to your Diocesan Treasurer without delay so your donations can be included in the amounts for this year s scholarships. Enclosed are flyers that could be hung on your parish bulletin board or included in your parish bulletin. May God bless you and our P.N.C.C.! Sincerely in Christ, Cathy A. Bilinski, Administrator Music Scholarship Committee

13 Volume 93, Issue No Canadian Diocese Children s Christmas Party St. Mary s Parish, Winnipeg, MB It was the time of the year when we spend special time with our families and friends. As Advent drew to an end, the anticipation of Christmas Day filled the minds of kids of all ages. To draw our church family closer together for the season, a festive Christmas party was held following Mass on December 21, Pizza was served in addition to our usual coffee and dainties. We even had a special visitor - Santa Claus and his wife, Mrs. Claus, came with candy canes for all, and gift bags for the children. We enjoyed a few hours of fun and fellowship with our parishioners, including a Christmas conga dance involving everyone from our youngest to oldest members! A raffle was held for a Christmas basket and also for a cash prize. As the afternoon drew to an end we finished the festivities with an impromptu sing-along of some Christmas favorites which gave birth to our first Kids Choir. (Watch for more from them in the future!) Our spreading of Christmas cheer and blessing was not limited to activities inside the church. Gift baskets were delivered to our senior members who are unable to attend services due to age or infirmity. Delivering these baskets let our seniors know that they are still in our hearts and prayers, even when they can t be with us in person. Submitted by Rev. Tadeusz Czelen

17 Volume 93, Issue No Eastern Diocese 2015 Eastern Diocese Winter Youth Gathering Saturday, January 3, 2015 brought the 5 th annual Eastern Diocese Winter Youth Gathering. This Christmas break 74 youth, adults and clergy from across our diocese gathered in worship, fellowship and learning at Holy Trinity Parish in Webster, Massachusetts. The gathering began with Holy Mass of the day celebrated by our diocesan Youth Chaplain, Fr. Sr. Rob Nemkovich. Lauren Sittard proclaimed the reading and Eric Nemkovich read the Responsorial Psalm and Intercessions. Host pastor, Fr. Robert Fredrickson, proclaimed the Gospel. Fr. Randolph Rudolph Calvo gave the sermon and did a great job of reminding/teaching the youth that God loves each and every one of them the same and differently. He encouraged the youth during this New Year 2015 to make time to build their relationship with God, our Father, in heaven. Following Mass Bishop Paul introduced our diaconate candidate Justin and spoke to all the males present about Sacred Vocations and asked them to consider this special service to the Church. Thanks is given to Karen Sobiechowski for a fine job as our organist and to Peyton and Eric for serving at the Altar. Following a group picture the youth and adults gathered in the parish hall for a special presentation on the Solemnity of Epiphany. The scene was a flashback to many years ago in Savonarola Theological Seminary where our National Youth Chaplain, Bishop Stanley Bilinski (Fr. Sr. Rob Nemkovich) lead a seminary class on Epiphany. The students were none other than Seminarian Calvo (Lauren Sittard fitting in so many ways), Seminarian Krusienski (Eric Nemkovich) and Seminarian Nemkovich Jr. (Fr. Michal Gitner). During this presentation the youth learned about the origin of the Feast of Epiphany, how it has been celebrated in the East and West throughout the years and how it is celebrated in our P.N.C.C. today, with many faithful having their homes blessed and marked with blessed chalk the year and first letters of the Wise men. The class ended with Seminarian Krusienski asking all Do You Go To Church? Joanne Oliveira and Kathy Nemkovich brought the youth upstairs for an activity matching game on the presentation of Epiphany. The youth needed to match up the questions and answers on the cards they were given, which showed they understood the material learned from the Epiphany presentation. Fr. Sr. Rob took a few moments to encourage the youth to participate in our next Convo 2016 meeting in a couple of months, to join the Convo 2016 Facebook page and, of course, make plans to attend our Diocesan Youth Retreat this coming August. A favorite youth meal of pizza, soda, cake and donuts followed. Thanks are given to Fr. Robert Frederickson and the good folks of Holy Trinity in Webster who had 15 pizzas and several boxes of donuts donated for this event. (Continued on Page 18.) Clergy and Altar servers after the Mass that began the Youth Gathering

18 18 God s Field January 2015 (2015 ED Winter Youth Gathering Continued from Page 17.) The rest of the afternoon was spent in fellowship and fun as the youth, adults and most of the clergy changed their shoes and went bowling. Unfortunately a couple of the clergy decided to bowl and did not do very well at all. There is no chance of them leaving their vocation for a bowling tour. After some great fun bowling, some went with Webster Fire Chaplain Fr. Fredrickson over to a local firehouse where they had a tour and got to see and experience some of the fire and rescue equipment. A day that was a blessing to so many came to an end as it was back to our homes and parishes and very soon back to school. We look forward to seeing our youth again at Youth Retreat 2015 at Camp Howe in Goshen, Massachusetts from August 16-20, 2015, and also again in Webster on March 21st as we have our next Convo 2016 meeting at 11 am. 19 Volume 93, Issue No Christmas Fair at Holy Cross Church Enfield, CT Our second annual Christmas Fair was held on Saturday, December 6 th. Santa was in the house for pictures with the kids, both big and small! All children received little gifts from Santa. Parishioners, as well as friends and family of Holy Cross attendees, volunteered their time and services to make our fair a big success - bigger than last year. Thank you to them all! We had dozens and dozens of fresh baked cookies and desserts (including some freshly-made gluten free goodies); handcrafted, crocheted and quilted items for sale; as well as fresh greens (door swags and tabletop trees) for home or gift giving; and several tag sale tables (two of which were just Christmas items). Our raffle prizes were Awesome, per Father Joe Soltysiak. We had Spa baskets, a train set, IPod & I tunes card, Coach purses, fine jewelry, baking/hostess basket, men s tool basket, both men s and women s toiletry baskets, a super huge children s fun basket, NASCAR collectibles and much more! Many people took their time to shop and then sit down with a hot beverage and munch a goodie while enjoying the festive holiday music. Everyone is looking forward to next year s Fair! Submitted by Nancy Lee, Board of Director and Chair of Fundraising Activities Liz Maziarz and Susan Greer stand with all of the Christmas Fair items for sale. Selene Doudera, Dorie Chirgwin, Dan Lee, Karen Peirce, Ed Rindfleisch, Angelina Lee in front of Santa, Rose Tavtigian, Karen Caron, and Margie James

20 20 God s Field January 2015 St. Joseph s Parish Happenings Westfield, MA During this Blessed time of year, many activities occur at St. Joseph's Church in Westfield, MA. I would like to share some photos and words about the Candlelight service and reception held on December 14th. The Service was celebrated by both Very Reverend Joseph Soltysiak and Father Robert Koerber. The church was filled with people of all ages. A silence fell over the crowd as the candles were lit and it was joyous to hear everyone's voices as Silent Night was sung both in English and in Polish. After the service, all were invited over to the social center behind the church for a reception. There was much laughter and happiness as people enjoyed the food and refreshments prepared by Carol Ruzsala and her friends as well as members of the School of Christian Living and Parish Committee. Thanks ladies! The hall looked festive after being decorated for Christmas by the children and young adults of the parish. Of course, the children loved having a special visit by none other than Santa himself. They rushed to get in line to be able to sit with him and share their secret wishes. Some of the adults also joined in the line! As we enter into the New Year, everyone here at St. Joseph's wishes you much happiness and health in the coming year. My personal wish for the coming year is that more people in the world will have their ears, mind and heart opened by the Word of God and we can live in a world filled with peace and love. Submitted by Kelly Burek Pictured above is a table of guests at the Candlelight reception enjoying each others company. Natalie Brown chats with Santa. Father Joe, Andrea McCarthy, Mia and Brett Jalbert.

21 Western Diocese Holy Cross Parish, Hamtramck, MI, Mission Committee held a new toy drive during Advent. Every Sunday pastor Very Rev. Jaroslaw Nowak invited parishioners to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them into the big toy box in the social hall. On Tuesday, December, 16, 2014, 158 toys, games, puzzles, and dolls were delivered to Friendship Volume 93, Issue No Advent Toy Drive Holy Cross Parish, Hamtramck, MI House where low income client families were able to pick out toys for their children. In some cases these might be the only gifts these children would receive at Christmas. We were glad to have so many toys donated and bless the good work of Friendship House. Submitted by Kathy Chockley Our volunteers and Very Rev. Nowak are surrounded by all of the donated toys. Many toys were donated again this year.
