1 Answer Key for Students The Doctrines of Grace in the Gospel of John: Course DGJ Mount Zion Bible Institute Note: the answers given herein are often quoted directly from the text, but your answers in all cases should be in your own words. Lesson 1 Introduction 1. Before you start the course, hopefully. 2. a clear view of the Gospel 3. the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth 4. 1) What can men do toward his own salvation; 2) is what God offers an actual or only a possible salvation. 5. Augustine and Pelagious (4 th Century), Luther and Erasmus (16 th Century), Calvin and Roman Catholicism (16 th Century), Synod of Dort (17 th Century). 6. a. an acronym and an aid to memory b. The doctrines were formally set down at the Synod of Dort c. the Doctrines of Grace 7. - Total Depravity: man is totally corrupt and unable to do anything toward his own salvation; Opposing view: man must be able to so something (since he is held accountable). - Unconditional Election: God chose some men out of all who deserved punishment, out of His own sovereign love; Opposing view: God s choosing was based on foreknowledge of which men would choose Him (conditioned therefore upon man s choice). - Limited Atonement: Christ s sacrifice was for those whom He had chosen; Opposing view: it was for all. - Irresistible Grace: God effectively saves those whom He has chosen; Opposing view: man can reject God s drawing Him. - Perseverance of the Saints: those whom God has chosen will continue in the faith until death; Opposing view: since salvation depends upon man s choice, he can also choose not to believe and leave the faith, loosing his salvation. 8. 1) Christ has accurate knowledge of God, and 2) Christ has complete knowledge of men. 9. Personal answer 10. a. Personal answer; hopefully to include love Lesson 2 Total Depravity 1. that man can and must choose to cooperate with God s grace, or else they will not be saved. 2. the new birth 3. Man cannot comprehend the light of God s truth. 4. a. Man cannot hear God s instruction: the witness of the Father and the Son in the Scriptures. b. God revealed Himself in Christ on earth, but man still does not truly comprehend Him as God (or else all men would worship Him). 5. God, Christ, the True Light, His Word, and His people. 6. because it exposes his evil deeds (3:20) Do you see how this shows your true affections? 7. a. evil! : the key is to recognize selfishness as evil (against God). 8. Man is addicted 1) to sin (8:34), 2) to the devil (8:39-41, 44), 3) to himself (12:25). 9. The ability to make spiritual choices. Man makes his decisions freely, but only based on his self-interests, which are all opposed to God ) Man cannot come to Christ for life (6:44, 65); 2) Man is unable to savingly believe in Christ. (Note that the Bible s use of believe is in the sense of trust, not mere intellectual assent to certain facts.) 11. 1) a new birth, 2) darkened eyes to be opened to the truth, and 3) wayward affections turned to love light and hate darkness (rather than the other way around), 4) obstinate will must be enabled to come to Christ. 12. their deeds were evil (3:19 an evil root); doeth evil (3:20 the evil results); the motive of disobedience is to dishonor God (5:23). 13. a. obeying Him The Doctrines of Grace in the Gospel of John Student Answer Key page 1 7/16/2015

2 b. because obedience or disobedience springs from and inner attitude: either love for Him (born in belief in Him), or dishonor for him (born in a lack of faith) c. Personal answer 14. Man is spiritually dead ) No man has life in himself; all require a new birth by the Holy Spirit (6:53). 2) All unconverted men are in a present state of spiritual death (5:24-25) ) Man is destined to perish eternally (3:16); 2) Man is living under the wrath of God (3:36); 3) Man is condemned already (3:17-18) 17. a. Personal answer, hopefully to include honesty if there are doubts 18. a. Personal answer, hopefully to include love. b. Wholly through God s granting a new spiritual birth. (God chooses to use the witness of His Word as preached by His servants here on earth.) 19. a. John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. b. John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. c. John 3:27 A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. d. John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. e. John 8:34 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. Lesson 3 Unconditional Election 1. because there is nothing in, about, or for man that is lovable. 2. God has, however, of His own sovereign and free will, set His everlasting love on a particular number of fallen men to eternal life. There are four categories of statements made in the Gospel of John that teach this truth. 3. 1) By stating that the men given Him by the Father were the Father s to give (17:6,9,10), and 2) that God has loved them before the foundation of the world (17:23-24). 4. a. it is 1) why: out of God s own free love, and 2) when: before the foundation of the world., hopefully to include awe and incredible self-abasing gratitude. 5. God the Father has given these chosen ones to His Son. 6. He prayed for them which Thou hast given Me (17:9). 7. Christ committed Himself to purchase eternal life for those the Father had given to Him (10:17-18). 8. Jesus is conscious of the will of His Father that He personally must bear God s wrath on men s sin. 9. God gives His elect children the means for eternal life whereby it is secured for them ) the ability to come to Christ; 2) the ability to believe on the Son (where believe is absolute dependence upon Him as the only source and support of spiritual life); 3) the ability to hear His voice (the Word) and to follow Him 11. The agreement between the Father and the Son whereby the Father gives a people to the Son, and the Son agrees to redeem this people by His sacrificial and substitutionary death 12. a. Personal answer: (please write us for literature where you have questions) 13. a. Personal answer, hopefully to include to ask God to confirm salvation through His Word, and to ask Him to save oneself, and to talk with a minister of the Gospel., hopefully: yes c. Personal answer, hopefully to include reverence and a desire to please God out of a motive for love for Him because of His unspeakable gift. 14. a. John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. b. John 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. c. John 17:9,12 9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost The Doctrines of Grace in the Gospel of John Student Answer Key page 2 7/16/2015

3 Lesson 4 Limited Atonement 1. that the death of Christ is intended solely for the elect and that the effect of His atonement actually secures their salvation 2. 1) that redemption is particular, and 2) that redemption is accomplished for the elect of God 3. a. John 10:11; 10:26 b. 11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. 26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 4. a. John 11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. b. 1) putting Jesus to death was expedient, i.e., there was an order about it, (it seemed to the religious leaders in a certain sense right and proper to do so at that time historically); 2) His death would bring great good to His people wherever they were (not to all the Jews, but those whom God would lead to believe in Him); 3) His death would be the means for preserving a part of the nation as the people of God. 5. a. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. b. 1) His death is voluntary, a laying down of His own life; 2) His death is for those whom He counts to be His friends, i.e., a particular group of people; 3) Those for whom He laid down His life may be recognized by their submission to His commands 6. a. John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. b. 1) Jesus, a man, was to die a sacrificial death that would set people free from the bondage of sin, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin ; 2) His death was not confined to the nation of Israel but included men in all nations... of the world 7. a. The scope is universal: it is aimed at people in all nations in the entire world. b. The scope is universal, but it is designed by God to be particularly effective only for some; those who benefit from Christ s death, the objects of God s love, are those who are characterized by continually believing on Him. 8. the word world (v. 51) has the sense of meaning not just Jews, but Gentiles also 9. a. Personal answer 10. a. Personal answer, perhaps to include some mention that the atonement for his sins is in fact accomplished for God s children, and there is nothing for him to do except come to Christ in obedience to His call., perhaps to include the fact that Christ s blood in fact has been shed to cover the sins of His children, and therefore there is no reason that believers have to remain in bondage to them. The Limited Atonement is completely effective for each believer. c. Personal answer, hopefully to include wisdom and discretion: we cannot say that Christ died for you, but rather, Christ died to pay the penalty for the sins of His children. The emphasis can be on man s responsibility to hear the Word of the Lord and Come to Him. Lesson 5 Irresistible Grace 1. that God s grace is irresistible only to those whom the Father had chosen and for whom Christ died. It is not that God s grace cannot be resisted by any 2. God, in sovereign grace, transforms by His Spirit those that He has chosen out of the mass of sinful humankind and given to His Son, who bore their sins on the cross. 3. they do so because of the work of God in them. 4. the importance of the new birth to see (3:3) and to enter the kingdom of God (3:5). 5. a. the assurance that they will be indwelt with another like Himself [Note: when Christ was about to depart physically, the Holy Spirit came. The Holy Spirit carries on for the believer many of the earthly ministries of Jesus.]. 6. that Christ s death will capture their attention, affections, and incline their wills so that they would follow Him 7. They act with all of their being in a way that pleases and glorifies God. 8. 1) He is no longer blind, but he can and does see the kingdom of God and has the true Light of the world to guide him through life; 2) He is no longer deaf, but he now hears the life-giving voice of the Son of God; His ear is opened spiritually and hangs on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God; 3) He is no longer spiritually ignorant, but he has true knowledge of God. In that knowledge, he knows his need and asks to have it met by God in His Son. The Doctrines of Grace in the Gospel of John Student Answer Key page 3 7/16/2015

4 9. 1) It is Jesus assumption that His followers will love Him, and that this love for Him is not a sentimental feeling but results in concrete action. 2) The renewed man s love for Him is no longer centered in his own interests, desires, and well being; as a matter of fact, he dethrones himself and dies that he may bear much fruit in service to Christ as His follower; 3) The renewed man s affections are directed to Christ s followers. His followers love one another. Their love for one another is patterned on His love for them: a) It is intelligent recognizing there are needs to be met. b) It is compassionate seeing that misery and discomfort are the consequence of such needs. c) It is purposeful and desires to meet those needs at all costs. It will involve prayers, comforting words, and actions to alleviate the need. We see that there is a new love for the Triune God, His Word, and His people ) he is willing to do God s will (7:17); 2) his desire is to abide in Christ and His love (15:9, 10); 3) his desire is to abide in Christ s word (8:31) ) he receives God s Son out of His fullness, favor after favor (grace for grace) to meet his need, and receives His Words; 2) he believes on His Name, on the One who sent Him, Christ s manifested glory, His word, the words of the Father, and the words of the apostles regarding Him; 3) he is one who enters the kingdom of God through the door of the sheep, Jesus Christ; 4) he is one who comes to Christ; 5) he is one who eats the bread of God and the bread of life, the flesh of the Son of Man, and drinks the blood of Christ and the water of life; 6) he is one who is a disciple, or a follower of Jesus Christ. Both of these words indicate strenuous activity; 7) he is one who is a doer: he practices the truth and does the works of God; 8) he is one who is a worshipper of the Triune God. 12. a. Personal answer 13. a. Personal answer 14. Personal answer, hopefully to include a dependency upon God to act and to open their eyes. 15. a. John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. b. John 3:5,8 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. c. John 5:24-25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. d. John 6:44, 65 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day 65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. Lesson 6 Perseverance of the Saints 1. those whom God has chosen, Christ has died for, and the Spirit has effectually called, will persevere in faith unto the end (either death or the second coming of Christ) and experience the fullness of the blessing of life as they behold the glory of Christ forever 2. 1) It is a present possession and a promise to be more fully realized in the future; 2) It is qualitative, i.e., life of a different kind than man has naturally, and it is quantitative i.e., it is a life that begins now, survives the grave, is manifested in the resurrection of the body, and continues forever beholding the glory of Jesus Christ 3. the perseverance of the saints 4. a. 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one. b. His sheep 1) were given to Him by His Father, 2) are given eternal life, and 3) are held securely in the hands of the Good Shepherd and the Father so they shall never perish! 5. the perseverance of the saints 6. a. Personal answer, hopefully to include that the believer s assurance does not depend upon his own ability, but entirely upon Christ s finished work unto his salvation (manifested in his love for God and obedience). (please request some helpful literature from us) 7. Because the verbs in Greek for believing and coming are most often in the present tense, indicating an action that continues without ceasing! 5 8. They 1) are abiding in His word, 2) are hearing the word and His voice, and 3) are keeping His commandments as their expression of love to Him, and 4) lead a holy life as they are no longer the slaves of sin. 9. It is because God preserves, therefore His people persevere; because they have received eternal live, they conduct themselves so as to live for eternity. It is a cause/effect relationship. 10. a. Personal answer 11. Personal answer 12. a. John 6:39-40 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. b. John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am c. John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; Lesson 7 Closing Remarks 1. absolutely nothing, the reason being that he is totally and incurably depraved 2. a. an actual salvation. This salvation rests on God s unchanging and eternal purpose to save some men, by the sacrifice and finished work of Christ on the cross, by God s effectually drawing men to Christ 3. Personal answer 4. Personal answer 5. In both private and public worship there will be a concern to approach God in the way that His word reveals is acceptable to Him. It will bring a wariness of novelties in worship that merely provide entertainment or excitement. Coupled with this, there will be a desire to check comfortable customs to see if they indeed meet the requirements of God s Word. 6. Personal answer 7. To the one who knows and owns his sins, He is the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (1:29). To the one who is perishing in his sins, He is the God-given Serpent lifted up in the wilderness, who gives life to all who believe in Him (3:14-16). To the spiritually thirsty, He gives the water of life freely (4:10, 14; 7:38, 39). To the one who senses his condemnation before God, His word, heard and believed, is the passage from death unto life (5:24). To the hungry, He is the Bread of God (6:33, 35). To the one groping in darkness, He is the Light of the World (8:12). To the one wandering aimlessly in ignorance, He is the Good Shepherd (10:11). To the one who is fearful and sorrowing because of death, He is the Resurrection and the Life (11:24, 25). To the one who is filled with doubt and uncertainty, He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (14:6). To the one who is separated from the source of life, He is the True Vine who gives life to the branches (15:5). 8. a. Personal answer 9. Personal answer 10.
