Do you know Jana? She s a Trek leader at a California megachurch. They have Awana from Puggles through middle school, but the youth pastor does his own thing for high school. Jana, who grew up in Awana and achieved her Citation as a high school senior, gets the 2-18 philosophy of Awana and wishes they would include Journey, but that doesn t look as if it will happen any time soon. As the Trek year comes to an end, Jana thinks about two girls in her group, Kara and Grace. They worked through their Bible studies with a lot of enthusiasm if only they could continue, she knew they would both achieve their Citations. So one Wednesday night she made an appointment with the commander and explained her feelings and also why she was glad she had gone through the Journey curriculum herself. She told the commander that she d be willing to mentor the girls as they went through the Journey curriculum, listening to their verses and checking their Bible studies. Was there a solution? Josh and Christina Anderson s fi ve kids all began Awana in Cubbies. Now the oldest was ready for Trek, but their church didn t have Trek or Journey, which made them a little sad. They liked the biblical foundation the kids were building and also how easily the handbooks lent themselves to good discussions. Often they would sit around the table after supper and work with their children on their sections, discussing verses and concepts. But there was a second reason the Andersons wished their children could continue. Josh was a social worker and Christina didn t make a lot of money at her part-time job designing jewelry. They knew when the kids hit college age they would need all the fi nancial help they could get. They were aware of the college scholarship program and knew that one of the colleges where they would like their kids to attend was on the scholarship list. Their church was the only church in town that offered Awana how could the children continue on? 2 3

Keith King, the commander at the church right outside of town, had wanted to add Trek and Journey for years. So many kids went through Awana to the sixth grade, fi nishing their books and doing well, and then suddenly were put into youth group which had no correlation to what they had been learning. Keith knew that a lot of youth groups had great, solid curriculum, but his church wasn t one of them. The leaders, a lay couple, were big on entertainment, not wanting to bore the kids with work. Keith had talked with them many times emphasizing that learning God s Word could be both fun and challenging. Kids needed to think through what they believed. The leader half-listened as he sketched a diagram of a desired zip line he wanted to build in the woods behind the church. Keith had nothing against zip lines or youth leaders, but he did have a problem with the shallowness of what the teens were learning. Everyone in the Collins family was an Awana fan. Dan and Marsha had been co-commanders at their church down in Texas for 15 years. Their clubs consistently won AwanaGames and quizzing events. Awana Grand Prix was THE highlight of the year. Someone had even made their daughter a Future Awana Clubber onesie and given it to Marsha at her baby shower. Now their kids were in middle school and high school and the family was moving to Oregon because of Dan s job. They were excited to fi nd a church with Awana in their town but quickly learned that it was considered an unimportant ministry of the total church program and no one really cared whether or not kids came, much less learned their verses. The Collinses prayed that they would have the opportunity to help, but did not want to push their way in. They were also concerned about their own kids all three were heading toward their Citation, but this church stopped Awana at the fi fth grade. What could they do? Then he got an idea he was good friends with the director of the Sunday morning program what if they did Trek and Journey during that hour for those who wanted to continue? Maybe then they could be student leaders on Wednesday night Would that work? 4 5

One day Megan Laramie was looking at the Awana website and discovered something amazing. Mom, please come here and look at this, she called. Her mom was putting the fi nishing touches on a birthday cake. She gently laid the decorator tube on the counter and came into the living room. What s up? All these scenarios (or variations of them) have been happening for years in the homes and churches where younger kids attend Awana programs that end in fi fth, sixth or eighth grade. Up until now that meant most clubbers stopped progressing in the Awana program. A few would contact their missionary or knew someone who knew someone who said you could do the Trek and Journey Bible studies on your own IF you were connected to a leader at a church that had Awana. Now with C-Track, teens have an organized plan for continuing in Awana. Did you know about Awana Youth Ministries? Awana has programs for middle school and high school! I can keep going in my books. I didn t know that, Meg, but our church doesn t offer those programs so how can you do them? Read this they have a program called C-Track that kids can do on their own if they re connected to a leader or pastor who will listen to their verses and check their Bible studies. Interesting Why don t you ask when you go to club tomorrow night? Though I m not sure the leaders know there are programs for those age groups either. This would be so cool! I thought I only had a few weeks left in Awana, but maybe I can do it all the way through high school. 6 7

What is C-Track? C-Track is a program enabling teens to continue in Awana even though their church does not offer a Trek or Journey program. The C stands for Citation. Most teens who wish to continue are on track to achieve their Citation and also to be eligible for college (another C word) scholarships. (You will fi nd a list of colleges on the awanaym.org website.) Why C-Track? Most churches that end their Awana programs in the fi fth-, sixth- or eighthgrade years have active youth programs in place so what is the purpose of continuing in Awana? A. Awana is based on the fi ve principles developed by Lance Latham back when he fi rst originated the idea for a children s youth program. Lance Latham s Five Principles 1. Awana is centered on the gospel. 2. Scripture memory is a key element. 3. Awana is exciting and fun. 4. Children and youth are trained to serve. 5. Awana is built on volunteer leadership. Principle 4 is: Children and youth are trained to serve. Although service is part of our entire program, much of the service component (including the student leader program) is included in the Trek and Journey curriculum. By discontinuing Awana in the fi fth, sixth or eighth grade, teens miss this important part of the Awana philosophy. C-Track allows teens to continue in the program and perhaps become student leaders. 8 9

B. Awana curriculum itself is centered on the fi ve Master Life Threads. Awana is intentional about developing a biblical worldview in children and youth. Our fi ve Master Life Threads have been carefully designed, based on the questions kids have about their faith during the different developmental stages of their lives. 1. Puggles /Cubbies respect 2. Sparks wisdom 3. T&T grace 4. Trek destiny 5. Journey perspective The life threads for middle school (destiny) and high school (perspective) take what the teens have learned and make it real and relevant to their everyday lives. Most middle schoolers are struggling with feelings of inadequacy. Destiny helps them understand that in Christ, we not only have a destiny, but our destiny is one of value. C. Awana awards the Citation to those who achieve 10 years worth of book completions. Many Awana clubbers are working toward achieving the Citation Award, but to achieve this award, they need to have 10 years of book completions. When clubs stop at grade school or middle school levels, teens are not able to complete the work necessary for the Citation. By doing C-Track, teens can continue in the program and achieve the Citation the highest Awana award. D. Awana partners with more than 40 Christian colleges and universities in a unique scholarship program. Teens achieving the Citation Award (and in some cases, the Meritorious Award) are eligible for college and university scholarships at schools around the country. Many families depend on scholarships, especially in these tough economic times, and the opportunity to earn a scholarship by completing Awana requirements is appealing. C-Track allows teens to continue their work and eventually be eligible for a scholarship. High schoolers are preparing to make decisions which can be life-altering. By teaching them perspective in the light of a sovereign God, we help them make decisions steeped in biblical discernment. And although each Awana program stands alone, by dropping out of Awana at a young age the teen misses the overall picture and does not understand how everything fi ts together. Two key components are omitted. C-Track gives teens the opportunity to continue their work. Can any middle school or high school teen do C-Track? No. A. The optimal situation is for a church to offer both Trek and Journey. We know that many churches offer Trek, but not Journey. But other churches stop at fi fth or sixth grade and don t offer either program. If the church does offer Trek and Journey, the teen must participate in the established program. They cannot do C-Track

B. The second option (and this should be considered before C-Track) is for the teen to attend a Trek or Journey program at a nearby church. Many churches with Trek or Journey programs welcome teens from other churches that offer the younger clubs. You can check out which churches in your area have Awana Youth Ministries on the Awana website awana.org. Click on Parents and then on Find Awana in Your Area. You will need to enter your zip code to fi nd a list of churches in your area that offer Awana. The churches should have a list of which Awana programs they provide. not offer Awana. The leaders at Spring Grove know Jake well. They know he attends a good church and his Christian testimony is evident in the way he lives his life. They agree that he can be a student leader in Cubbies and agree to allow him to do C-Track through their church. He also comes 15 minutes early on Wednesdays, and along with Katie, meets with Mrs. Wilson. Spring Grove also purchases his Bible studies and awards. Jake attends youth group at his own church but when activities don t confl ict, he also attends Bridge 912 at Spring Grove. C. The third option is C-Track. But C-Track is available ONLY for those teens who attend a church that has a younger club or is connected to a church that has the younger clubs (most often the church where the teen has attended Awana in the past). Olivia attends a church 30 miles down the road and her church doesn t offer Trek or Journey either, but they do have an active youth group. Olivia doesn t want to attend youth group she decides she s too busy being on the drama team, a cheerleader and the drill team plus she has a full social life. C-Track sounds good to her. Dad and Mom want her doing something that has to do with church and if she could do C-Track, she wouldn t have to actually attend anything! Here are some examples: Katie has grown up in the Awana program at Spring Grove Community Church. The Awana clubs at Spring Grove stop at the sixth grade, but Katie s T&T leader, Mrs. Wilson, has agreed to listen to Katie s verses, check her Bible studies and keep a record of Katie s progress. Katie works as a student leader in Sparks on Wednesday nights and so comes 15 minutes early to meet with Mrs. Wilson. Katie receives her books and awards from Spring Grove. Katie also attends the Spring Grove youth group Bridge 912 on Friday nights. Jake lives down the street from Katie and he has always attended the clubs at Spring Grove because his church does No, C-Track is not a substitute for a church youth group. If a church has a youth group, Awana strongly encourages teens to attend. C-Track should be in addition to, not in place of, a youth group. William goes to a church that doesn t have Awana. He found out about C-Track from his cousin and decides he wants to do it. No, you must be connected to a church that has Awana in order to take part in C-Track. Churches that have Awana are registered, which allows them to order core program components. Churches also provide accountability and credibility when teens apply for college scholarships. William must get connected to a church with Awana

Kayley loves little kids. When she found out some of her friends were becoming student leaders in Puggles and Cubbies, she signed up. THEN she found out they were also doing C-Track even though the church didn t have Trek or Journey. Kayley didn t care about learning verses and decided doing C-Track was too hard even though her friends told her it wasn t that diffi cult at all. Kayley DOES need to do C-Track if she wants to be a student leader. That doesn t mean she has to fi nish a Bible study, but she DOES need to put forth effort in working through the study. Who can be the mentoring adult? The teen must be connected to a qualifi ed adult who can listen to verses and check Bible studies, but who? A. The teen s former leader. Many C-Track teens are mentored by former T&T or Trek leaders. These are usually adults who have encouraged the teens back when they were clubbers and are willing to continue to work with the teens as they enter Trek or Journey. Often it is these leaders who understand the overall goal of Awana and the Master Life Threads upon which our curriculum is based. These leaders are familiar with Awana and often encourage the teens to continue the program. B. An Awana leader who has mentored other teens and often works with two or three C-Track teens each year. This person fi ts into much the same category as the leader above but perhaps has not previously worked with the teen. This is a person who has a heart to encourage teens to continue in Bible study. C. A director or commander. Directors and commanders are often willing to take on the role of mentor. D. The pastor. In some churches, the pastor/pastor s wife is the one working with the C-Track teens. This particularly happens in smaller churches where the pastor and his wife know the teens well. Sometimes this is a pastor who has been involved in Awana in a previous church and likes encouraging the teens. E. The youth pastor. We suggest that the C-Track teen ask the youth pastor to help him with the books. If two or three teens are doing C-Track, some youth pastors meet with the teens at a specifi ed time and have a small C-Track Bible study group. F. Other respected adult in the church. Perhaps a retired man or woman is willing to be the teen s mentor. We know of at least one church where a retired former pastor has stepped up to check books and listen to the verses of C-Track teens. He served as an Awana leader for many years and has a great relationship with the teens. Or maybe you have an adult who is interested in Awana but cannot serve in club because of a work schedule, but is willing to work with one or two teens. We have included a sample letter that the teen can personalize to explain to the commander, youth pastor or other church leadership why he needs a qualifi ed adult to check his Bible studies. Many teens won t need this letter because they have already built a relationship with a T&T or Trek leader or director who is willing to continue working with the teen as he moves into the next program. Even if the teen does need to fi nd a mentor, she may personally know someone who could help and a formal letter is not necessary this would be especially true in smaller churches

Whether the teen already has an adult who has agreed to work with him or needs to fi nd one, we would suggest the teen let the commander, youth pastor or pastor know that she will be working (or desires to work) in the Bible studies. We don t want the church leadership to be uninformed. Awana should not be in competition with existing programs. (Note C-Track is not available for children in the younger clubs. Trek and Journey books are Bible studies which can be done in a group, but can also be done individually. Much of the teaching in the younger clubs is in addition to the handbooks, whether that is in Large Group Time or in Handbook Time.) What are the responsibilities of the leader/mentor? The C-Track teen needs a leader who is NOT related to him. Again, this is for accountability and credibility with college scholarships. That adult can simply listen to the teen s verses and look over the Bible studies, making sure that the answers are correct. However 1. The adult must know the basics of the Trek or Journey program (depending on which books the teen is doing). Sometimes the adult has been through the programs himself, so he has a good overview of what s happening. But other times, this is the fi rst teen in the church who has worked in one of the youth ministries Bible studies and no one in the church is familiar with the programs, the lessons or what is required. We would suggest that the adult download the Trek/Journey Role Books from the Awana website and look at the Awana Youth Ministries Web page to get an overview of the programs. 2. The adult must know the answers to the Bible study questions. An adult will not be able to check whether the teen s answers are right or wrong if he doesn t know what the right or wrong answers should be. We suggest that the adult purchase one of the leader guides or do the books himself. 3. The adult must listen to the memorized verses, check the answers to the Bible study and make sure other requirements are completed. 4. The adult must regularly meet with the teen and give the teen time to show what he s done. (In other words, 45 seconds on the church steps after a Sunday morning service won t do it.) 5. The adult should become a true mentor, regularly praying with the teen and discussing what s been learned through the Bible studies. If the teen is not a leader in a younger club, the adult should encourage her to become one. If the teen does work as a student leader, the adult should occasionally ask how it s going and be interested in the teen s activities. 6. The adult needs to keep an exact record of the C-Track teen s accomplishments this will be needed in order for the teen to be awarded his Citation and college scholarship. (A record sheet is provided in this e-book.) 7. The adult needs to let the Awana secretary (or person who places the orders) know which awards the teen has earned so the necessary purchases can be made

What are the teen s responsibilities? Curriculum Overview 1. Connect with an adult (as described in the previous sections). 2. Determine with the adult leader which Bible study he should be doing. The adult then makes arrangements with the club secretary (or whoever does Awana orders) to purchase that book. TREK OVERVIEW Trek includes three years of curriculum. Each year consists of two Bible studies contained in the same book. The front cover of the book introduces one of the 12-lesson Bible studies. Turn the book upside down and the back cover of the book introduces the second 12-lesson Bible study. 3. Work through the Bible study, meeting all the requirements for completion, as do those teens who are involved in an established Trek and/or Journey program. The one exception would be the requirements to bring a friend to Trek or Journey. The substitute requirement is to bring a friend to youth group or church. 4. Attend the church s regular youth program. C-Track is not to be a substitution for taking part in the church s regularly-scheduled youth activities. 5. Participate in AwanaGames, Bible Quizzing and/or Summit if possible. (Many Trek and/or Journey programs will allow teens to team up with their own teens for special events.) 6. Serve as a student leader in the church s younger Awana clubs. Student leader uniforms are available. (Note leaders or parents who wish to achieve their Citation can also do C-Track.) If a church offers T&T through fi fth grade and a middle school youth group for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, teens will need to complete all three years of Trek curriculum. If a teen participated in T&T through sixth grade, he or she will need to choose two years of Trek curriculum. Compass Points are not required. All teens must begin by completing the Trek Check entrance brochure. Here is the order of Trek studies for the next six years Billboard Series Roadsign Series Dashboard Series Billboard Series Roadsign Series Dashboard Series 18 19

Here is a brief description of the different segments of a lesson: Guidepost Scripture memory. The Awana Youth Ministries standard is for leaders to give no more than two helps per Guidepost (not per verse). A help is either a few words or a question or gesture anything to jog a teen s memory. Backtrack This asks teens to go back to clarify an earlier point or provide their own thoughts about something. This is not in every lesson. Power Up This is all about application. Really push teens to apply their brains here; don t be afraid to ask follow-up questions. second series, there are only a few, but they re harder. Guidelines for specifi c sections: Oasis review segments in the Bible studies must be completed all verses in Oasis must be recited at one time. Invite your friends section Since there s no Trek ministry in your church, teens should invite friends to youth group or church. JOURNEY OVERVIEW Journey is a four-year curriculum. The teen must begin by completing the Faith Foundation brochure each year. The teen must complete two Bible Studies each year. Info-on-the-Go Defi nitions for some unfamiliar words teens may not know If your church has more than one teen doing C-Track, they may want to choose the same Bible Studies. Backpack Stash Fun stuff! Trail Sign Like Backtrack, this one s not in every study. But, when it is, it provides a hint of what s coming in future lessons. In addition... Each study also includes another segment unique to that book. For teens participating in Bible Quizzing, the rotation for the Bible Studies is as follows: Galatians and Ephesians God-colored Glasses On the Rock A Study in Romans Take the Trek Challenge This is an opportunity to dive deeper into a given lesson through additional study or service opportunities. These are optional, much like extra credit projects in school. In the fi rst series of each study they re in every lesson, and in the 20 21

A central requirement of the Journey curriculum is to read through the Bible. Each Bible Study lists the Bible books assigned for that year. (The teen needs to record the date/dates he reads the book and also give his mentor a brief summary of the book s theme. The Summaries are on the web at AwanaYM.org/BibleBookSummaries.) At the back of the Bible Study, you will fi nd three additional requirements. And what about the people introduced at the beginning of the e-book? Jana s commander listened to Jana explain C-Track. He admitted that he knew Awana had a program for high schoolers, but also admitted he knew little about it. He was willing to allow Jana to meet with the teens and said he was interested in seeing the material himself. Part One The teen needs to bring a visitor to church. This includes youth group, a regular service, Sunday school or other special youth activity. Part Two (a) The teen needs to take part in a long-term service project. We encourage them to serve as a student leader in one of the younger clubs. Other projects are suggested, but the teen can also do something unique as long as it is approved by the adult mentor (and perhaps the commander depending on the circumstances). Part Two (b) The teen will need to attend a Christian training seminar. An easy way to do this is to attend an Awana Ministry Conference in the fall. (An AMC would work well if the teen serves as a student leader.) These are held all over the U.S., so there should be one not too far away from your church. Other teens will also be at the conference. Again, other training also works, but the adult leader (commander) will need to approve. Conclusion C-Track is a great option for those teens who enjoy Awana and appreciate the spiritual foundation provided through the program. We pray that these teens will fi nd willing adults who will walk with them as they continue through their books. The Andersons talked to the commander about their kids continuing in Awana, but the commander wasn t interested. They talked to the youth pastor who in turn, explained his own scope and sequence. The Andersons didn t have a problem with the youth pastor s curriculum: it was solid and Bible-based, but they still wanted their kids to achieve their Citations. They checked around and discovered (to their surprise) that there was another church in town that offered Trek and were more than welcoming to the Anderson s children. They still needed to fi gure out what to do about Journey, but at least the kids had a program to attend for another couple of years. Keith King s friend did agree to have the Trek and Journey lessons taught on Sunday morning. He had been looking for a solid curriculum. For those teens in the classes who didn t serve as student leaders and had no desire to do the individual work they were still getting the lessons. The other teens came early on Wednesday nights and met with Keith to say their verses and have their Bible studies checked over before they went to their respective clubs to serve as student leaders. The teens were excited about the arrangement

The Collins family used the letter provided in this e-book as a guide for their own letter they wrote to the pastor. (The church did not have a youth pastor.) Because they had only been attending a few months (and Awana wasn t meeting since it was summer), they felt they knew the pastor better than the commander or other leaders. The pastor didn t seem interested in starting Awana Youth Ministries, but he was willing for the church to order the books and awards for their children. He then contacted a former T&T boys director who had had to step down because of health reasons and asked if he d be willing to work with the Collins son. The man was not only willing, but excited to help and get back into Awana. The Collinses hoped that their own kids could get their friends interested and maybe the church would add Trek and Journey before too long. The connection is necessary: 1. For accountability for achieving the Citation 2. For accountability to Awana and the college offering scholarships 3. For access to ordering books and awards 4. To encourage and mentor the student FAQs 1. My youth pastor said he would work with me, but we re confused about what I m actually supposed to do. Who can answer my questions? Megan s parents had the youth pastor over for dinner and talked to him about Megan doing C-Track. Much to Megan s surprise, he said he had a couple of other teens who had also mentioned it. He was thinking about having a small group meet on Friday nights just for those teens who were doing C-Track. Look at the list of requirements posted in this e-book. He should also read the Trek/Journey Role Books (depending on what program you re completing). If you don t fi nd the answer there, contact your Awana missionary or us at Awana headquarters at youthministry@awana.org. 2. We do have a Journey group at our church, but I don t really like going. I have basketball on the same night. Now I can do C-Track, correct? C-Track does not work in every situation. We understand that there are teens who live in areas where there are no Trek or Journey programs or attend churches that do not have Awana. If their own church does not have the younger clubs, we encourage teens to contact other churches in the area that have Awana. Even if they don t attend that church, they may fi nd a leader who is willing to work with them. No. C-Track is not available to teens who have a Trek or Journey program at their church. You need to participate in your church programs and the activities provided

3. My friend from school is doing C-Track at her church and she says the commander is only making her do one book each year. My commander says I have to do two. Your commander is correct. Each year, a teen must do two complete Bible Studies. 4. I would like to go to Summit as part of a team, but I am the only one doing C-Track at my church. So how can I do that? Contact Journey groups in your area and ask if anyone is going to Summit. Or contact your missionary and ask if there is any group you could be part of. (Headquarters would not be able to answer this question.) Many Summit teams have C-Track participants. 5. I am working toward a college scholarship. How do I keep a record of what I m doing? 7. I m serving as a student leader in Cubbies and I ve been told I must do C-Track. Is that correct? I only signed up to be a student leader because I like kids not because I want more work to do. That is a requirement set in place by your church but it is one we strongly recommend and encourage so the answer is yes. 8. I love Awana. Ever since I was a little kid back in our old church in North Carolina, I have worked toward achieving my Citation. Dad was transferred and now we live in Ohio. The church here has the younger clubs, but they do their own youth program and say they don t want anyone working on Awana Bible studies, because they want everyone focusing on the Bible studies from their own program. Even though my parents and I have both said this wouldn t limit my participation in the church program, they still refuse to order the books for me. Can I do it anyhow? Your adult leader/mentor needs to keep these records and provide them to your church so that your church has an account of what you ve accomplished. Your mentor may use the form provided in this e-book. Make sure your mentor signs it to authenticate it. You need to connect to a mentor outside your family. Is there another church in the area you can connect to? If so, then it is up to you and your parents to decide whether you continue since the church you are attending told you they didn t want you doing an additional Bible study. That is your parents call. 6. My friends also want to do C-Track. Can we start a group? You will need to ask the commander or youth pastor at your church for permission. Ask them to help you get organized

Dear, (Pastor, Youth Director or Awana Commander) Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Awana program at our church. I have enjoyed the many benefi ts of weekly activities and growing spiritually as I have memorized God s Word and have learned how to apply His Word to my daily life. However, I do need your help. 1. I will need to order the books and end-of-the-year awards through our church. 2. I must say my verses and have my Bible studies checked by someone at the church an Awana leader from one of the younger clubs or someone on the church staff. Would you be that person? Or could you suggest someone who could? I would like to continue in Awana through an option called C-Track, which is for kids like me who do not have a Trek and/or Journey program at their church. Besides the continued Bible study, I am also aiming to earn my Citation which is the highest award one can earn in Awana. In addition, numerous colleges offer scholarships to those teens who have earned their Meritorious or Citation Awards. The cost of college combined with the rising cost of living makes a scholarship very desirable! Thank you for your help with this. I appreciate you and all you do for the church. Sincerely, I do not intend for C-Track to take the place of our church youth program. I will still participate in the regular youth activities
