1 September 2017 Making disciples of Jesus Christ who go to make disciples of others. FIRST PRESS On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy (unofficially known as "Superstorm Sandy") slammed into the Northeastern coast of United States. The Category 2 storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record (as measured by diameter, with winds spanning 1,100 miles). Experts estimate that the storm's monetary damages topped $68 billion. At least 286 people were killed along the path of the storm in seven countries. As Hurricane Sandy bore down on New York City, almost everything shut down except one rogue Starbucks near Times Square. Desperate (addicted?) but highly committed Starbucks junkies fought high winds, dangerous rains, and dire warnings just to get a latte or a cup of coffee. Bethany Owings, 28, walked 10 blocks with her one-year-old daughter for a fix. "I saw on Facebook that they were open," she said. "It was scary not having Starbucks." Her neighbor and friend 29-year-old Chris Hernandez came along and later said, "When she said they were open, I was like, 'Pack the baby up. Let's go!' I didn't know they were all going to close. I started panicking. There's nothing else I would've gone out for. This makes my day complete." Oh, really? Alex Mwangi, 25, walked more than 20 blocks looking for an open Starbucks. He told reporters, "It took half an hour. But I'm a Starbucks fanatic. I go four or five times a day." David Low, also 25, said he went to three closed Starbucks before learning this particular store was open. Low said, "I'm really happy these guys are open. I can't get a pumpkin spice latte anywhere else. The 10-minute wait was worth it." October 29, 2012 was a Monday. Pure speculation on my part, but I wonder how many people would have ventured out into the storm to find a church conducting worship services if the storm had hit the previous day? People will make sacrifices for what they value. If we value Jesus, we will lay down our lives for him. We may label the individuals in this true news story crazy. However, we have to admit that they weren't lukewarm or uncommitted about following their deep desire for a pumpkin spice latte. Do we pursue Jesus with the same fervor, or is he worked into our busy schedules when it is convenient? Psalm 37:5-6 remind us, Commit your way to the Lord trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. I hope to see you in worship in the weeks ahead! Keep the faith, Pastor Tony

2 PAGE 2 Reminder! Deacons hope you can bring some nonperishable food on Aug 6th to feed those in our community who are in need. What Deacons Do: You may have noticed quite a few expectant mother at church lately. It is an exciting time here at First Presbyterian as we anticipate the arrival of six new little ones this summer! When a baby is born to a member of our congregation, the Deacons mark the event by giving an engraved baby spoon to the family. Let s all pray for those precious infants and their families and thank God for the joy of new life! Just A Reminder: There are donation bins in the church hallway for clothing, baby items, toiletries and food. Please make sure that all food items are NON-PERISHABLE. Thank you. Within the frame of time, a picture of a family is revealed through opportunities to serve and be served. Appropriately, we often call one another our Church Family. Families are a wealth of services provided and received. At First Presbyterian Church of Hanford, we annually recognize efforts, opportunities and service; from the person who takes one available chance to get to serve, to those who have ministered for decades in the same area, faithfully doing their tasks over and over. Please know that First Presbyterian Church of Hanford appreciates your time, efforts and talents creating an accumulated example of the gifts God gave us. And by our accumulated acts of service that are normal and regular, our great God, through His Son is revealed.

3 JEFF AND CHRISTI BOYD TO SHARE WITH US PAGE 3 Jeff and Christi Boyd, PCUSA missionaries to Africa will be with us to share about their work during the worship services on Sunday September 3. Jeff grew up in this church and we have been supporting his and Christi's mission outreach for most of their over 25 years of service there. With education as a priority, Jeff serves as Regional Liaison for Central Africa for partner churches with which he works. Christi is Facilitator for Women and Children's interests in the Congo, Madagascar, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Here are excerpts from their recent newsletters: Jeff was taken to visit a community health center being built with funds from a Presbyterian Women Thank Offering Grant and on land donated by a member of the Presbyterian Church of Equatorial Guinea. He tells us, Providing basic care and health education for the community is one way for the women of the IRPGE to express their faith in Jesus Christ and to demonstrate concern for the well being of of their neighbors....traveling the tens of miles that separate community from the nearest hospital can be a financial and logistical obstacle, and a precarious undertaking for the seriously ill. Because the most prevalent illnesses, malaria and water-borne diseases, are preventable by raising awareness and curable with affordable treatment if caught on time, the health centers provide a great service to the community at large. Christi tells us of a children's camp in Goma, East Congo where facilitators were trained during a nine day intensive course, and who then put that training to work with the 50 children who came burdened with wounds of severe emotional trauma. It has been well established that unhealed childhood trauma increases the risk of developing personal problems and a tendency toward violent behavior in later life....healing children's wounds of trauma is therefore way to break the cycle of violence, trauma, and behavioral disorders, a first and necessary step for peace building in conflict zones such as the volatile region of East Congo. You will not want to miss this visit.
