2 WEEK 2 13 August 19 August 2017 CGMC 2017: Intentional Disciple Making Church (IDMC) A Certain Kind Session 2: Understand the Biblical Strategy Thru' Authentic Discipleship and Intentional Someone wisely said, The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. We tend to major on minors. When we come to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20, Christians have often mistaken the minor for the major and have missed the biblical strategy. Seven Misconceptions of The Great Commission A Fresh Look at Matthew 28:18-20 Here are seven major misconceptions that must be set right so that we might be true to the call of Jesus in the Great Commission. 1. Missing the Main FOCUS - not we, but CHRIST 2. Missing the Main ESSENCE - not message to broadcast, but LIFE TO LIVE 3. Missing the Main AGENT - not some missionaries/pastors/leaders/etc., but ALL MEMBERS 4. Missing the Main PRODUCT - not make converts, but MAKE DISCIPLES 5. Missing the Main EMPHASIS - not the manner/ Hows, but THE MISSION/ Whys 2

3 6. Missing the Main YARDSTICK - not numbers of disciples, but OBEDIENT DISCIPLES WE CULTIVATING 7. Missing the Main CONCERN not discipling within, the lost, but DISCIPLING THE NATIONS Four Convictions from Matthew 28: The SOURCE of the Great Commission: All authority The SCOPE of the Great Commission: All nations The STRATEGY of the Great Commission: All things The SEASON of the Great Commission: Always... Eight Marks of A Church What does an intentional disciplemaking church (IDMC) look like? There are eight key indicators of a healthy disciplemaking church: 1. Purpose-Driven is the core mission of the church. 2. Responsible Evangelism People are being led to Christ and conscientiously followed-up. 3

4 3. Intentional Growth Strategies People are being developed through intentional growth strategies. There s something for everyone! 4. Leadership Commitment Leaders are committed to model disciplemaking. 5. Vision-Casting The disciplemaking vision and strategy is clearly articulated and adopted in the church. 6. Vision-Concretising Concrete vehicles are established to facilitate the ` 7. Small-Group Infrastructure Small groups are intentional disciplemaking units. 8. Spiritual Multiplication People s lives are transformed and spiritual multiplication is actually taking place. 4

5 What An Intentional Church Looks Like Another way to see what an intentional disciplemaking church looks like is to make basic comparisons, as in the following chart: as a Concept as an Emphasis An Effective IDMC PURPOSE A conceptual purpose A committed purpose The CORE purpose of the IDMC EVANGELISM Focused on meeting own church needs People are intentionally led to Christ Intentional evangelism and conscientious FOLLOW-UP are practiced GROWTH STRATEGIES Ad hoc strategy for growth A growth strategy is somewhat in place People are TRANSFORMED through INTENTIONAL growth strategies LEADERSHIP UNITY Leadership agreement Leadership commitment Leadership RESONANCE VISION CASTING vision is unclear vision is articulated Vision is articulated and CLEARLY OWNED CONCRETISING VEHICLES Weak or ad-hoc vehicles to facilitate vision Some vehicles to facilitate the vision WELL COORDINATED VEHICLES strategically put in place SMALL GROUP INFRA-STRUCTURE Small groups have other priorities Small groups have some disciplemaking emphasis Small groups are INTENTIONALLY disciplemaking units SPIRITUAL MULTIPLICATION Focused on addition Multiply to the next generation Multiplies SEVERAL GENERATION 5

6 Conclusion Great Commission given as the biblical strategy Disciple making is not a program, it is YOU...delivery system.life changed Discipleship begins at home..church..workplace and beyond,.testimony of discipleship ultimately comes from the home/family Discussion for application: 1. On the 8 marks of disciplemaking (pg. 4), share 1-2 high scoring points that is true of CGMC and 1-2 low scoring points that is untrue of CGMC. 2. Take time right now to text someone you know that has contributed to the strength of the disciplemaking features you have shared. 3. What are 1-2 concrete actions you can take to improve the low scoring points of the essential features? 6
