1 1 CURE 1124 / UGED 1520 STUDY OF CHRISTIANITY Term Lecturer Lecture Tutorial Dr. Au Yik Pui, Tanya (tanya_jmu@yahoo.com.hk) Thursday 09:30am 11:15am, LHC G_04 Thursday 11:30am 12:15pm, LHC G_04 Course description This course attempts to introduce Christianity as a multi-dimensional and diversified religious movement as well as the relevant methodological approaches to the study of it. Through making references to the manifestations of Christianity in various cultural, historical and social contexts, this course also aims to understand Christianity s relationship with other religions as well as the unity and plurality of Christianity as a global religion. References to relevant cases in Christianity in China, particularly Hong Kong, will be made for illustration purpose. Expected Learning Outcomes Knowledge: To achieve proper understanding of Christianity as a global phenomenon and some of the representative manifestations of Christianity in various local contexts. To obtain a comprehensive knowledge of the major aspects of Christian faith, especially its views of the meaning of human life. To have a basic understanding of the methodology involved in the multidisciplinary study of Christianity. Skills: To be able to use the analytical framework and hermeneutical tools for the academic studies of the religious phenomena related to Christianity. To be capable of relating what have been leant from this course to some other academic disciplines. To have the ability to reflect critically on one s own cultural and / or religious tradition. Attitudes: To treasure the value of human life and be sensitive to the related ethical responsibilities. To appreciate the diversity within particular cultural and / religious tradition. To become more respectful to others religions, worldviews and values. 1

Students are required to attend lectures and tutorials unless they have medical or emergency reasons. 2 unexcused absences are allowed during the course. Students cannot pass the course if they miss more than 25% of all the class meetings (including tutorials). -- Tutorial presentation (20%) Varies Presentation by 3 4 persons in a group on one of the further readings of the designated week (grouping and presentation schedule to be confirmed on Feb 4, the first tutorial). Time limit for each group is 30 minutes (including a group-led discussion and taking questions from the audience). Each group is expected to send a Power Point of the presentation to the lecturer before 5:00pm, on the day prior to the presentation. Each group has to post 2 3 discussion questions on the Forum in the Blackboard Learn for the group-led discussion prior to tutorial. 4

Please send your reading reports and signed VeriGuide statements to the Blackboard Learn. Term paper (50%) Length: in English, approx words in Chinese, approx words May , by 5:00pm A soft copy of the paper and the VeriGuide statement (signed) should be submitted to the Blackboard Learn by 5:00pm on May Late submission will be penalized; 5 points will be deduced for one day of late submission or part thereof. Late submission over 5 days will be given a zero mark. Papers will not be graded until the signed VeriGuide statements have been received by the lecturer. Late submission of VeriGuide statements may cause points deduction. 5

6 6 Marking scheme A, A- a more comprehensive understanding of relevant idea and knowledge with a clear presentation; a clear thesis and a certain extent of originality; dialogue with different scholarly works. B+, B, B- a good understanding of relevant idea and knowledge with a clear presentation and reference to scholarly works; a relatively less-defined and less argued thesis. C+, C, C- a relatively weak of understanding of relevant idea and knowledge; weak presentation; unclear thesis, and even contradiction; reference is limited. D+, D, F showing little understanding of relevant idea and knowledge; no reference to scholarly works; weak presentation. Learning activities Lecture Tutorial 2 hours per week. 1 hour per week. Academic honesty and plagiarism The Chinese University of Hong Kong places very high importance on honesty in academic work submitted by students, and adopts a policy of zero tolerance on cheating and plagiarism.
