3 St. Mary on the Hill July 17, 2016 One of my favorite quotes by Pope Francis in this Year of Mercy came on June 12 th while he was celebrating a special Mass for those with disabilities. Pope Francis said, Love and solidarity are what make the world a better place, not a focus on physical perfection and hiding away those who do not fit a commercial ideal. Then he went on to say, Think of a priest who does not welcome everyone. What advice would the pope give him? Pope Francis asked before responding, Close the doors of the church! Either everyone or no one should enter. As a Pastor I want to follow the Holy Father s example in this Year of Mercy and make sure we are a faith community who welcomes everyone. Persons with disabilities are valued members of our faith community. I was energized by the initial meeting on July 6 th of our newest ministry, the Parish Partnership on Disability. There were so many good ideas surfaced at that meeting and in weeks to come you ll be hearing much more about the good work of this new ministry. But unfortunately, some Catholics with disabilities are still waiting to be welcomed, to have access, to be accepted, to be served and to serve, and to experience being part of the one family of Christ. In this Year of Mercy, I d hope we can begin to overcome any barriers that would keep people from belonging to us. In this year of Mercy, I had also hoped that we d be able to welcome a persecuted Christian family from the Middle East but we ve not been able to overcome the barriers to sponsoring a refugee family. I ve asked Fr. Michael Hull to give an update: Over a year ago, the parish of St. Mary on the Hill made the decision to sponsor a Christian family from the war torn Middle East. Private individuals have also offered to serve as sponsors, which is a substantial commitment. We immediately went to work on trying to secure refugee families, and contacted the Archdiocese of Atlanta Immigration Services, and the Archdiocese of Chicago Immigration Services. Neither was able to assist. We also met with an immigration attorney, and contacted the local Congressman and a Senator s office. At the present time the door is closed to Christian families from war torn areas. When Christians flee Syria, they enter into EU countries through a lottery system, or by making the journey alone and applying for entry in the country they have traveled to. The U.S. is not part of the lottery system. Syrians can go to the American Embassy in Beirut and apply for political asylum, but because of the influx of refugees they have tightened their borders, making it almost impossible for refugees to enter. If they reach the embassy they are put on a waiting list, and have to stay in Beirut for months and months until their name is called. Most don t have the resources to do so. It doesn t appear that the Immigration policies will change in the U.S. in the near future. Congress allocates the money to fund the various Muslim rebel groups that are attacking Syria and Iraq, and they also fund the money for immigration. While Muslims are quietly being immigrated into the country by our government, through material agreements with ally countries, there is no provision for an influx of political asylum refugees, nor is there the heart to change this in Congress. For the time being, the door is closed. We will persist in trying to bring Christian refugees to Augusta, and someday the door will again open. Please, FIGHT EVIL! PRAY FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS! For all the parishioners of St. Mary on the Hill, thank you all so much for an incredible summer. It s truly been a blessing to be able to help out around the parish and in spending time getting to know so many of you. Fr. Jerry s kindness and willingness to allow me to be involved in a variety of different functions has really made the summer a fulfilling one, and an experience I won t soon forget. Hopefully, by the time you re reading this, I ll be in Poland, checking in for a couple weeks of volunteer work at World Youth Day I ll be traveling with fellow seminarian Patrick May and so between the two of us, we shouldn t get too lost We will, however, get an opportunity to see The Holy Father and to visit a few of the famous Polish churches and shrines, and we d love to pray for any special intentions that you may have. I d like to leave y all with a brief quote that I came across this last year and one that really made an impact on me. It s from St. Augustine of Hippo, a man who made a lot of mistakes growing up and as a young adult, but through grace, faith, reason and a commitment to seeking the truth, he would go on to be a Doctor of the Church and one of the most influential of all Saints. This is a quote that in prayer I often meditate on and have found a lot of consolation in, and I hope it will do the same for you. St. Augustine says (In reference to God): You move us to delight in praising You; for You have formed us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find rest in You. 7 St. Mary on the Hill July 17, 2016 NEW MINISTRY: PARISH PARTNERSHIP FOR DISABILITY St. Mary on the Hill is organizing a Disability Ministry to help address and facilitate all of our parishioners with disabilities, especially in encouraging them to receive the Sacraments and to fully participate in the Mass. In order to accomplish our goal, St. Mary s does need a little bit of feedback and help: - For those who have or care for a person with any type of disability, if you would please complete and return the survey found on our website: www. stmaryonthehill.org. Surveys can be returned by dropping them into the collection basket, or by bringing them to the Parish Office. These surveys will give us a better idea of the number and variety of needs to be addressed. - For anyone interested in being a part of the initiative, we re looking for volunteers! No prior training or experience is required, and as of now, your time would be spent helping to train other active members of the parish (Eucharistic ministers, ushers, etc.) in how to serve those with disabilities.
