1 Corinthians Letter to a problem church page 1302 First Corinthians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to a church with big problems. The Corinthian Christians were enthusiastic, but immature, believers; and the church was troubled by quarreling, immorality, and disunity. They exercised many gifts of the Holy Spirit, which Paul was pleased about, but they used them in a very immature and arrogant way, which he most definitely was not pleased about. We are meant to use the Spirit s gifts for the good of others, not just for our own benefit, he reminds them. Paul had founded this church (Acts 18:1-18), and he knew it was his responsibility as their founding apostle to set them straight. In this letter he corrects them, disciplines them, clarifies some misunderstandings, and answers their questions. What s it all about? Knowledge was a fashionable word in the busy and cosmopolitan city of Corinth. All sorts of religious groups there claimed to have knowledge of spiritual truths that others didn t have. And the church there was no different. Different groups were claiming superior knowledge of one kind or another and were becoming arrogant because of it. Paul therefore opens his letter by addressing the issue of real knowledge, or wisdom. This has nothing to do with intelligence or worldly values. Real wisdom, he says, is found only in the cross of Christ (chapters 1 2). Paul then reprimands them for their ungodly attitudes and behavior. They were dividing into opposing factions based on their preferences for different apostles (chapters 3 4). There were examples of immorality (including the case of a man having an affair with his motherin-law which some in the church were actually proud about), strange ideas about marriage, and confusion over eating meat offered to idols (chapters 5 ). The Corinthians were abusing their freedom because of their idea that in Christ they were free and so could live however they wanted to. It was even affecting the way that they shared the Lord s Supper. OVERVIEW Introduction and greeting 1:1-9 Divisions over the nature of true wisdom 1: 2:16 Divisions over favorite apostles 3:1 4:21 Moral and legal problems within the church 5:1 6:20 Answers to their questions about marriage 7:1-40 Answers to their questions about food offered to idols 8:1-13 The meaning of true freedom 9:1 11:1 Divisions over worship 11:2-34 Using spiritual gifts 12:1 14:40 Christ s resurrection and ours 15:1-58 Personal requests and greetings 16:1-24 Paul warns them that true freedom is about living in love and caring for others, not ignoring them. In chapters 12 to 14, Paul reminds the Corinthians that they form one body, the body of Christ. It is only when the various parts are working in harmony

page 1303 that the body is healthy. In worshiping together, they should recognize their different gifts and value those who contribute to the common good. Right at the heart of this section is a passage on the meaning of true love (chapter 13), which reinforces Paul s point that the Spirit s gifts should be used for the good of the whole church, not for selfish enjoyment. Paul ends by considering the resurrection (chapter 15). Apparently, some Christians believed they were so spiritual that their resurrection had already taken place. Paul tells them that they are wrong. There is a not yet aspect to the Christian life; as Christians we are waiting for the final resurrection of the dead, when our physical bodies will be changed. Only then will death be defeated forever. What does it mean for us? This letter reminds us that being a Christian is not simply about Jesus and me ; it is about Jesus and me and you. When we become Christians, we become part of God s big family or to use the picture Paul uses in this letter, part of Christ s body here on earth. We therefore need our brothers and sisters and they in turn need us. That s why we cannot live our Christian life without regard for one another; and that s why divisions, arrogance, unholy living, and so on harm both our Christian brothers and sisters and us. We are truly free when we put the concerns and needs of others before our own. The letter also reminds us about what it means to be truly spiritual. Being spiritual is not just about praying, meditating, or worshiping; it is about everything we do in everyday life. We often tend to think of the spirit as something detached from everyday life, but Paul reminds us that true spirituality is as much about what we say and do as about what we believe. It is about how we use and misuse our bodies. A truly spiritual person is someone who can both hold their tongue in a quarrel and contain their appetites for food and sex. So to be truly spiritual is to use physical, material things for God s glory and for the blessing of others. 1Greetings from Paul This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sos the nes. 2 I am writing to God s church in Co rinth,* to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus,* just as he did for all people every where who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. 3 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. Paul Gives Thanks to God 4 I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus. 5 Through him, God has enriched your church in every way with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. 6 This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. 7 Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. 9 God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Divisions in the Church I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters,* by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose. 11 For some members of Chloe s household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters. 12 Some of you are saying, I am a follower of Paul. Others are saying, I follow Apol los, or I follow Pe ter,* or I follow only Christ. 13 Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not! 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Cris pus and Gaius, 15 for now no one can say they were baptized in my name. 16 (Oh yes, I also baptized the household of Steph a nas, but I don t remember baptizing 1:2a Corinth was the capital city of Achaia, the southern region of the Greek peninsula. 1:2b Or because you belong to Christ Jesus. 1: Greek brothers; also in 1:11, 26. 1:12 Greek Cephas.

1 Corinthians 2 page 1304 anyone else.) 17 For Christ didn t send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News and not with clever speech, for fear that the cross of Christ would lose its power. The Wisdom of God 18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. 19 As the Scriptures say, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent. * 20 So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. 21 Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. 22 It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. 23 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it s all nonsense. 24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles,* Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength. 26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world s eyes or powerful or wealthy* when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world,* things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. 30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord. * 2Paul s Message of Wisdom When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters,* I didn t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God s secret plan.* 2 For I decided that while I was with you I would forget every thing except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness timid and trembling. 4 And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. 5 I did this so you Corinth Corinth, a city of 650,000 people (two-thirds of them slaves) stood on the narrow strip of land connecting the Greek mainland and the Peloponnesian peninsula. It had two ports, one a mile-and-a-half to the west on the Mediterranean Sea and the other six miles to the east on the Aegean Sea. They were joined by a rolling roadway across which goods or even small ships could be dragged. It was therefore a major commercial city, with all the immorality that sailors and travelers brought. Immorality also played a part in religion, for among the twelve temples in Corinth was one to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, where religious prostitution was practiced. Corinth was so notorious for immorality that a word was created based on it to Corinthianize, meaning to practice sexual immorality. Religion was closely linked with civic and business affairs, and sacrifices to seal business deals were common. All this explains why Paul devotes much of this letter, written to a church that he himself had founded (Acts 18), to the dangers of idolatry and immorality, which were the atmosphere in which they lived. 4 page Corinthians 3 would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God. 6 Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. 7 No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God* his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. 8 But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. 9 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him. * But* it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out every thing and shows us God s deep secrets. 11 No one can know a person s thoughts except that person s own spirit, and no one can know God s thoughts except God s own Spirit. 12 And we have received God s Spirit (not the world s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. 13 When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit s words to explain spiritual truths.* 14 But people who aren t spiritual* can t receive these truths from God s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. 15 Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. 16 For, Who can know the Lord s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him? * But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ. 3Paul and Apollos, Servants of Christ Dear brothers and sisters,* when I was with you I couldn t talk to you as I would to spiritual people.* I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as 1:19 Isa 29:14. 1:24 Greek and Greeks. 1:26 Or high born. 1:28 Or God chose those who are low born. 1:31 Jer 9:24. 2:1a Greek brothers. 2:1b Greek God s mystery; other manuscripts read God s testimony. 2:7 Greek But we speak God s wisdom in a mystery. 2:9 Isa 64:4. 2: Some manuscripts read For. 2:13 Or explaining spiritual truths in spiritual language, or explaining spiritual truths to spiritual people. 2:14 Or who don t have the Spirit; or who have only physical life. 2:16 Isa 40:13 (Greek version). 3:1a Greek Brothers. 3:1b Or to people who have the Spirit. Divisions in the church News of growing divisions in the church, reported to him by members of the church (1 Corinthians 1:11), deeply troubled Paul. After all, he had planted this church and had spent eighteen months with them (Acts 18:1-11), so he deeply felt the pain of these divisions. But even more troubling was the Corinthians failure to understand what the church is: the body of Christ on earth (1 Corinthians 12:12-31). To divide from other Christians is therefore to rip his body apart. That is why Paul speaks so strongly against disunity, exposing its foolishness (1:12-17) and immaturity (3:1-23), saying its roots lie in arrogance (3:21; 4:6-8, 18-19) and in people s desire to have their own way (e.g., 6:12; 8:9; :23). To live with divisions, whatever their root race, gender, or opinion is to deny the cross of Christ, who died to bring about unity (Ephesians 2:14-18). But because the church is made up of people who aren t perfect yet, there will inevitably be times when disagreements arise. So Jesus himself told us what to do in such situations: Talk to the person concerned not about them and if harmony cannot be reached, then draw in the church leaders to help bring about reconciliation (Matthew 18:15-20). As Paul exhorts the Ephesians, keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace (Ephesians 4:3). See also Unity, page 686; The church, page 1348.

1 Corinthians 3 page 1306 though you were infants in Christ. 2 I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren t ready, 3 for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren t you living like people of the world? 4 When one of you says, I am a follower of Paul, and another says, I follow Apol los, aren t you acting just like people of the world? 5 After all, who is Apol los? Who is Paul? We are only God s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. 6 I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apol los watered it, but it was God who made it grow. 7 It s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What s important is that God makes the seed grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. 9 For we are both God s workers. And you are God s field. You are God s building. Because of God s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have Jesus Christ. 12 Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person s work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames. 16 Don t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in* you? 17 God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God s temple is holy, and you are that temple. 18 Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, Worldliness Paul says he had to talk to the Corinthians as though they belonged to this world (1 Corinthians 3:1) as though they lived like the non-christians of the world around them. Yet throughout the Bible God s people are called to be different from those around them: Come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them (2 Corinthians 6:17). This does not mean cutting ourselves off from them, for that is not what Jesus did or taught, but living among them while remaining distinct in belief and action. Yet the behavior of these Christians was little different from their non-christian neighbors. As a busy port and commercial center, Corinth had developed a reputation as a highly immoral city, even leading to the expression to Corinthianize, meaning to indulge in sexual immorality. Corinth also had many pagan temples whose meat, sacrificed to idols, was then sold in markets and restaurants. But rather than standing apart from such cultural practices, the church had participated in them; and some were even proud of it (1 Corinthians 5:1-2; 6:12-13). It is always easy to rationalize worldliness to say we need to identify with our friends, or that God understands our weakness. But Paul warns that such behavior is not a minor matter; it is dangerous, striking at the very root of our relationship with Christ and defiling our bodies, which the Holy Spirit has made his temple (6:18-20). See also Becoming like Christ, page 1435.

page Corinthians 4 He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness. * 20 And again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless. * 21 So don t boast about following a particular human leader. For every thing belongs to you 22 whether Paul or Apol los or Pe ter,* or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. 4Paul s Relationship with the Corinthians So look at Apol los and me as mere servants of Christ who have been put in charge of explaining God s mysteries. 2 Now, a person who is put in charge as a manager must be faithful. 3 As for me, it matters very little how I might be evaluated by you or by any human authority. I don t even trust my own judgment on this point. 4 My conscience is clear, but that doesn t prove I m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide. 5 So don t make judgments about anyone ahead of time before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due. 6 Dear brothers and sisters,* I have used Apol los and myself to illustrate what I ve been saying. If you pay attention to what I have quoted from the Scriptures,* you won t be proud of one of your leaders at the expense of another. 7 For what gives you the right to make such a judgment? What do you have that God hasn t given you? And if every thing you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift? 8 You think you already have every thing you need. You think you are already rich. You have begun to reign in God s kingdom without us! I wish you real ly were reigning already, for then we would be reigning with you. 9 Instead, I sometimes think God has put us apostles on display, like prisoners of war at the end of a victor s parade, condemned to die. We have become a spectacle to the entire world to people and angels alike. Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed. 3:16 Or among. 3:19 Job 5:13. 3:20 Ps 94:11. 3:22 Greek Cephas. 4:6a Greek Brothers. 4:6b Or If you learn not to go beyond what is written. Faithfulness Paul s commendation of his spiritual son Timothy as a faithful child in the Lord (1 Corinthians 4:17) brings home to us the importance of faithfulness in the Christian life. Faithfulness is one of God s own characteristics, noted in Scripture again and again (e.g., Exodus 34:6; Deuteronomy 7:9; 32:4; Psalm 89:8; 1 Corinthians 1:9; :13; 1 Thessalonians 5:24; 2 Timothy 2:13). It is not surprising therefore that God calls his children to demonstrate this same kind of faithfulness, both to him (e.g., Joshua 24:14) and to one another (e.g., Hebrews 13:4). Faithfulness is about being loyal and true in all we say and do. It finds expression in things like keeping our promises, fulfilling our obligations, telling the truth, serving others even when it costs us, being honest and reliable in the workplace, and handling money with absolute integrity (especially when we are handling it on behalf of others). The story of Ruth is a wonderful example of selfless faithfulness to others, demonstrated even at cost to herself (e.g., Ruth 1:16-17). Faithfulness in marriage something often neglected in our modern world is particularly demanded of God s people (e.g., Malachi 2:13-16; Hebrews 13:4). If we do not live as faithful people in every part of our lives, it seriously undermines our message that God is faithful and is always there for people. If they cannot see faithfulness in us, whom they can see, why should they believe in a faithful God whom they cannot see?

1 Corinthians 5 page Even now we go hungry and thirsty, and we don t have enough clothes to keep warm. We are often beaten and have no home. 12 We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us. 13 We appeal gently when evil things are said about us. Yet we are treated like the world s garbage, like every body s trash right up to the pres ent moment. 14 I am not writing these things to shame you, but to warn you as my beloved children. 15 For even if you had ten thousand others to teach you about Christ, you have only one spiritual father. For I became your father in Christ Jesus when I preached the Good News to you. 16 So I urge you to imitate me. 17 That s why I have sent Tim o thy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord. He will remind you of how I follow Christ Jesus, just as I teach in all the churches wherever I go. 18 Some of you have become arrogant, thinking I will not visit you again. 19 But I will come and soon if the Lord lets me, and then I ll find out whether these arrogant people just give pretentious speeches or whether they real ly have God s power. 20 For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God s power. 21 Which do you choose? Should I come with a rod to punish you, or should I come with love and a gentle spirit? 5Paul Condemns Spiritual Pride I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you something that even pagans don t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother.* 2 You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship. 3 Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit.* And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this man 4 in the name of the Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church.* I will be pres ent with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus. 5:7 See The Passover, page Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Sa tan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed* and he himself* will be saved on the day the Lord* returns. 6 Your boasting about this is terrible. Don t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you real ly are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.* 8 So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread* of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread* of sincerity and truth. 9 When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. 11 I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer* yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don t even eat with such people. 12 It isn t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. 13 God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, You must remove the evil person from among you. * 6Avoiding Lawsuits with Christians When one of you has a dispute with another believer, how dare you file a lawsuit and ask a secular court to decide the matter instead of taking it to other believers*! 2 Don t you realize that someday we believers will judge the world? And since you are going to judge the world, can t you decide even these little things among yourselves? 3 Don t you realize that we will judge angels? So you should surely be able to resolve ordinary disputes in this life. 4 If you have legal disputes about such matters, why go to outside judges who are not respected by the church? 5 I am saying this to shame you. Isn t there anyone in all
