It gives an overview of God s good news from Creation, through the first people s disobedience to Jesus loving us and people being forgiven, finishing with a glimpse of heaven. 4 Unit 5: Paul - God s Messenger MEGA THEME Followers of Jesus OVERVIEW AIM After Paul met Jesus it changed his life and he went on with redirected energy and boldness to talk about Jesus. Being empowered by the Holy Spirit nothing could stop him from telling the good news, no matter what happened to him. To introduce the children to Paul as God s messenger to people who did not know about Jesus. To explain that the story of the birth of Jesus, as recounted in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, is a fulfilment of God s promise made to humanity many years earlier. 5 Using the Manual Unit Outlines Outlines Outlines are divided into two parts: A Teacher s Notes page, followed by Activity Ideas for each of the different age groups. The lesson plans contain a number of options for you to choose from. plans have a pre-selected minute core lesson shown by the in the choices boxes. For those who have more time, or prefer to make other choices, there are other activity suggestions. Remember you may glean from all age levels and adapt as appropriate for your group. Notes At the end of each unit there is space for your own notes. Activity Ideas The Manual provides Unit Outlines to explain the thinking behind each unit, content and concepts to be explored by the unit, and how the following lessons will meet the unit aims. There are eight units in each GodSpace book. Required Resources Depending upon your activity selection you will need a number of resources. There are 6 frequently required resources. These are represented by symbols in the lesson plans, i.e.: The Bible Or print outs of the weekly Bible passage found on the Power Tools USB card. Children s Magazine Song Located on Power Tools as a mp3 or timed PowerPoint. Memory Verse Activity Each lesson comes with it s own set of Teacher s Notes. This is the curriculum page. It provides an overview of the content of the lesson, aims, learning outcomes,. Remember that the learning outcomes may not always be immediately measurable. 6 Support Material Magazines We see the need to provide magazines that the children can own. They are designed to review the lesson, and help the children work towards the learning outcomes. Explorers Magazine The Explorers Magazine caters for the pre-reader or emergent reader. They are designed to be completed with the teacher s guiding help, not as a do alone activity. Adventurers Magazine The Adventurers Magazine is designed for early readers and you still may need to clearly explain (read) each activity for the children. The activities reinforce the lesson content and concepts helping the children adventure deeper into GodSpace. Navigators & Voyagers Magazines The Navigators Magazine is used to revise or as a stimuli for responding to the material covered in the Get into it section. The Voyagers Magazine is provided to help the children think through their own beliefs, feelings and responses to what has been taught in the lesson. The magazine may also be used throughout the lesson plan to help with group discussions. Answers for Magazine Activities A complete list of the answers for the Magazine activities is on the Power Tools USB card. Tools Tools are included visual aids and resources on the USB card. They are support materials for your lessons with games, start up activities, response stimuli, dramas and printable cut out story telling pictures. ABBREVIATIONS In the lesson outline pages Tool resources are written in an abbreviated form: i.e. LT, lesson number and title of activity. e.g. LT L8 Unlikely Hero ( Tools, 8, Unlikely Hero). All Tools will be linked in the appropriate lesson folder. On page 224 you will find a cross reference of story telling pictures past numbering and the new numbering. You can also purchase two double sided A3 size story telling backgrounds to use like a flannel board to place your story telling pictures on. You can order them when you order your books or do it on line or via sales@godspace.org.au To ensure the longevity of these poster sized pages and the story telling pictures, it is recommended that you either cover them in clear plastic adhesive paper, or even better, ask your church to have them laminated for you. Power Tools USB card (See page 10 for how to use) Offering more choices, the Power Tools USB card contains: all you need for each lesson in one folder weekly Bible passages and memory verses to print out or display on interactive whiteboard songs as mp3 s, timed PowerPoints with words and music for each song and words of all the songs to photocopy or reproduce on a data projector ( NB. Owning the USB card allows you to make one copy of the contents to use and adapt on your own computer. We recommend that you make a copy and store the original away in the back of your Manual. 7 What s on the Power Tools? Many activities that can be used on the interactive white board. Open the Power Tools by flipping the small tab and this goes into your computer to discover the wealth of resources you have available to you. We recommend you make a copy of it all by creating a GodSpace Yellow 2018 folder on your computer and drag the whole lot onto your computer into that folder. POWER TOOLS Yellow Once opened click on the document (either in Word or Pdf) that says Y18 Read This First to find detailed instructions. Open the folder that says Y18 Power Tools Folders and you ll find a selection of folders, including * Y18 Individual s. Open the folder that says * Y18 Individual s and you ll find a folder for each lesson and all the resources in one spot. Click on each link to open to the required resource. Revision s (including Christmas and Easter Assemblies) are in a separate folder. NB: Songs will be in separate individual folders - * Y18 Songs. Each folder has the words, mp3, PowerPoints and chord sheets if available. If not using the original USB - copy the whole song folder onto your new USB when accessing a different computer. 8 God s Story of Everything 1 Mega Theme: God s Way Unit OVERVIEW This first unit is an overview of God s good news. It is designed as an introduction for the children, whether or not they have had any teaching at all about God, Jesus or the Bible. It starts with God who created a perfect world with the first humans. Then it explores te choices given t humanity to follow God s ways and the consequence of not following God, and the difference Jesus makes. The final lesson for the unit introduces God s plan for all who love him, which is to be with him now and in heaven for eternity. God is eternal. He existed before anything else and has a plan for all eternity, a plan that we can be part of only because Jesus died to make it possible. We want children to understand that they can have a part in God s big story now by responding to Jesus invitation to life with him. We trust that getting a glimpse of God s Big Story at the start of the year will provide a firm foundation for later lessons and help your group see the relevance of the teaching for their lives. Children take on the worldview of the community they live in, so many will have little or no concept of a loving God who is active, now in this world, and for eternity. 9 1 VALUE Significance Beginning Well Part 1 Think First Devout Bible-believing Christians interpret this account in different ways. Be careful not to teach your own belief about the way creation happened as what the Bible says, particularly if you are teaching children as a representative from a range of Christian backgrounds. Our emphasise is on the why - not the how. Teacher s Notes God, the World and People Genesis 1-2:4 the BIG idea God created the world and created people to be in relationship with him. lesson AIM For the children to engage with the Bible account of creation. learning OUTCOME The children will be able to: Explorers share what they think God wants them to know from the creation account. Adventurers recall that God made the world and people and it was very good. Navigators explore the Bible account of the beginning of the world. Voyagers discuss God s plans for the world. INSIDE the story Through creation everyone can gain some idea of what God is like (Romans 1:20) so it s a good thing for children to explore and marvel at creation. But only a limited knowledge of God can be gained from the things God made and that s why the Bible s record is so important. This lesson is part of an overview and there is a whole unit later in GodSpace about Creation. Although the Bible account of creation is included in this lesson, the aim is to focus on the Big Idea that this is God s world and he made us to be in relationship with him rather than the details or order of creation. Verses 1 and 31 of Genesis 1 sum up this creation account. Even if you feel very familiar with the Genesis 1 passage, read it thoughtfully now, as God s revelation to the people he made. Note the rhythm and the repetition of the key ideas that God commanded and Evening came then morning and God looked at what he had made and it was good. The idea that this world and everything in it, including us, rightly belong to God because God made it, is far from the way most people in Western society think and live their lives. The children probably already have their own ideas about the origins of the earth and whom they belong to. Don t be afraid to let them express contrary views and doubts but challenge them to take seriously the Bible account as one that millions believe and that God has revealed. 10 start up Welcome and GodSpace Review (2-3min) Welcome the group again and explain to them that we ll be learning about God and what he does. Review the group rules (LT Rules). Show your Bible and say that the Bible is what we use to find out about God. Song (3-4 min) Sing the song God Loves the Postman (Song 4). Make up some actions. Fuzzie s Game (5-10min) Introduce them to Fuzzie (a puppet) and explain that he needs to understand rules to play a game. Choose a simple game like `Simon Says or `Who Am I? and have Fuzzie lead this game as a fun way to get to know some of the children s names and personalities. Name Game (4-6min) Choose an amazing living creature and say (your name) likes (e.g. elephants). Ask the children to think of an amazing creature and say the same sentence that you did with their name and the creature. E.g. Isla likes monkeys Invite five or six to stand and say their sentence one after the other. get into it God s Creation (6-8min) Tell the creation story with the outline L1 from Power Tools. Use Story Telling Picture C6 or Power Point L1 to show you where the individual pictures (A1-3; B1,7 C1,6-10; T1.) Before there were any people, there was God. God didn t come from anywhere; God was always here. Nobody made God, because God is not a person like us, God is God. So when there was just God, nothing else, nothing to see or hear or smell or taste or touch, nothing but God, the Bible tells us in Genesis 1 that God decided to make the world. God said, Let there be light and light started shining. God saw that the light was good. Next God said, Let there be sky and water. Let all the water below come together so there is dry ground and the land and sea appeared. God looked at what he had done and it was good! Then God said, Let there be all kinds of plants, including fruit trees and plants to eat. And that s what happened. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. Next God said, Let s make the sun and the moon. He also made the stars. Then God looked at what he had done and it was good. Then God said, Let the sea be full of fish and swimming creatures, and let birds fly in the sky. And it happened. God looked at what he had done and it was good. God said, Now let s have all sorts of animals. And that s what happened. Then God said, Now we will make people. They will be in charge, they will look after everything I have made. So God created people. God blessed them and said, Take care of my world. Everything you need is here. Then God looked at what he had done. All of it was very good. Ask: What do you think God wants us to know from this story? (Accept responses) Explain that God wants us to know that we are his most special creation and we have a special job to be in charge of all the other creatures on the planet for God! Creation Picture Book (6-8min) Use an age appropriate Bible Picture book that tells the creation account. Align it with the Bible reading. go for it Explorers Magazines (7-10min) Complete the activities together. Prayer (2-3min) Say: We can talk to God any time. Give thanks for the children and our time together. Say: Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at all the amazing things God made and how they can remind us of God s plan for the world. Nature Table (3-5min) Display a number of items from nature (e.g. feathers, flowers, seed pods, pictures of animals). Talk about the things on the table what they are, where they are from, etc. Ask the children Who made all these things? (Accept responses) Say: Today we will learn about who made all the wonderful things in the world! Good/Bad List (3-4min) Make two lists on the board (or cardboard to keep), one labelled good the other bad. Ask the children to suggest things that are good about the world and things that are bad. Write these in the appropriate columns. Say: There are lots of things wrong with the world today, but the Bible tells us that when it was first made it was perfect. (You may like to save this list for future lessons). Imagine (3-4min) Say: Close your eyes and think of a garden or park. Can you see trees? See the sky? Hear the birds? Other animals? Smell the flowers? Open your eyes. Show pictures/photos/nature items and discuss all the beautiful things in our world. Ask: Who do you think made all this? (Accept responses) get into it Reading the Creation Account (6-8min) Show your Bible (if different - and a children s quality Bible) and explain what it means to you Explain that you are going to use this book over the year to understand more about God s plan for us. Say: Let s begin right at the beginning. Read the creation story (Genesis 1) from a quality children s Bible. Use an age appropriate Bible Picture book that helps to illustrate the creation account. Align it with the Bible reading. Talk about how perfect God s creation is. Affirming that God is perfect and has a plan for us too. God s Creation (6-8min) See Explorers 1. Create small groups of 3-4 and give them each an A4 sheet of paper folded into three. Instruct them to think of life in the world of nature and decide on something for each category with a reason for their choice: i. The funniest animal. ii. The most amazing insect. iii The weirdest plant. Share choices. Game: Creatures of The World (5-7min) Set up a rhythm that everyone joins in, like clap, clap, clap, click. Say: The Bible doesn t give a scientific report of how the universe was formed. If it did many people wouldn t understand it, certainly not people thousands of years ago. Instead it presents some big truths about the world, God, and people - truths that can affect our lives. Ask: What are those main ideas from this passage? (First there was God, God created the universe on purpose, in stages, God was very pleased with what he d created). You might like to write key words on the board. Extra Info (3-5min) Say: Much later in the Bible, one writer tells of something that happened before the world was created. Read Ephesians 1:4. Ask: What was God s plan before the world began? 15 2 VALUE Choices and Consequences Be Consistent At the beginning of each year the children will be testing out your boundaries. They will want to know that you are someone who is credible that they can trust. At this stage of the year it is important that you are consistent in what you do, which means following through on what you say you will do. Do not make threats (e.g I ll send you to the principal) or promises that you are not able to keep, or are not willing to follow through on. Take the first month to establish the boundaries and a good rapport. Additional tip for this lesson: The topic of Adam & Eve, and Jesus dying may raise some questions about death. Don t let that conversation dominate or continue. As human being we will all die physical deaths at some stage - what God offers us is eternal life in a spiritual sense. Teacher s Notes Choices to be Made Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-13; 1 John 1:5-9 the BIG idea The Bible explains how the world changed from being the way God made it due to choices that humans made and then how God continues to offer the opportunity to make better choices. lesson AIM To explore how the Bible helps us understand the state of the world and the consequences of wrong and right choices. learning OUTCOME The children will be able to: Explorers say what went wrong in God s perfect world and how does God fix it. Adventurers explain that the first humans made the wrong choice but God has a plan to fix it. Navigators say what impacted this world is no longer perfect. Voyagers discuss the consequences of wrong and good choices. INSIDE the story There were two trees of note in the garden. One gave life; the second gave the power to know the difference between right and wrong. God wanted the people he made to eat freely from the tree that gave life but he told them not to eat fruit from the one that could give them the power to know the difference between right and wrong (CEV). There would be consequences for the choices they would make. The issue was one of trust. Who were they going to believe, the God who created them or the snake who told them that God was holding out on them by saying they couldn t eat from the second tree? We understand the snake to be a representation of Satan, God s enemy. God left the man and woman free to choose but the choice had consequences and in choosing not to believe God, their close contact with God ended. God s love for the people he made didn t stop when they decided not to trust him. They had to suffer the consequences of their choice, which meant they had to leave the garden and no longer had access to the life-giving tree and so would die, but God had a way to overcome the death that had taken hold on the world he created. Refusing to trust God has had consequences for every person since then. The New Testament calls it sin and tells us that Adam sinned, and sin brought death into the world. Now everyone has sinned... (Romans 5:12) The fact is that every person, because of their sin, will die (Romans 6:23). Our sin is the reason we need a Saviour. So what if a human could live a life fully believing and obeying God at every point? That person wouldn t have to die. The power of death over the whole human race would be broken. But what if that person chose to die? Their death could be a substitute for people who really want to trust God but fail. So Jesus, the Son of God, who was without sin, took the punishment (death) for the sins of humanity (Isaiah 53:6) when he died on the cross (another tree). Not only that, but Jesus death actually takes away our sin - so we make a choice to be in relationship with God as Adam and Eve were in the garden. Say: When God made the first man and woman, they lived in God s fantastic garden. The garden had everything they needed and Adam and Eve could have what they needed for free. There was just one rule; they weren t allowed to eat fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. That tree could let people know about good and bad, right and wrong. Only God knew about those things and that was good. There was a sneaky snake in the garden too. He came to Eve and said, Did God say you re not allowed to eat any fruit from the garden? No, just from the tree in the middle of the garden, answered Eve. If we even touch that tree we ll die. No you won t, said the sneaky snake. God knows if you eat that fruit you ll know all about good and bad, like God. Eve moved closer to the tree. The fruit looked beautiful. She liked the idea of knowing all about good and bad, like God. She reached out her hand, took some fruit and ate it. Adam was there too so she gave some to him and he ate it too. Straight away they realised things they hadn t known before. They knew they had done the wrong thing. Then they heard God coming and quickly they tried to hide, but it was no good. God called out to them, Adam, Eve where are you? God knew what they had done. God told them what life would be like now that they had listened to the snake instead of God. They would have to leave the fantastic garden and now the things that were fun before were going to be really hard work and what was worse, their bodies would wear out and die. But God still loved them very much, and gave them some warm clothes to take with them. As Adam and Eve went from the garden, God knew he would do anything so that people would trust him again. He have a plan so that the people would know that he wanted them to be his friends again. Say: We all do things we shouldn t sometimes, or don t do things we really should. Even you and me everyone. Well almost everyone... There was one person who always did the right thing and never did anything bad. Ask: Do you know who that person is? (Jesus) Say: Some people didn t like Jesus, in fact they killed him, but because he had never done anything wrong and didn t deserve to die, God brought him back to life and now he s alive forever. That s why Jesus was the only one who could make the world right again. It s because of Jesus that we can be forgiven when we do bad things. It s because of Jesus that people can be friends with God and live with him now and after they die. We ll learn more about that in a few weeks. go for it Prayer (2-3min) Say: The Bible tells us that everyone makes bad choices, ones that hurt other people and even hurt us, but the good news is we can always say sorry. We can also tell God we are sorry and he will forgive us. Pray a `sorry prayer. We can also thank God for caring so much to want to be our friend. T: Fuzzie s wrong choice reminds us of the very first bad choice that people ever made. Let s find out what the Bible says about that. Discussion (4-5min) See `Broken in Navigators 3 Talk about a time when you failed to follow the instructions when making something and how it was broken (e.g. baking a cake, assembling an appliance or made a bad choice) Invite children to share similar incidents in their lives. Say: When God created the world, he also created people and he gave them rules to live by. Sadly, they made a choice to not obey God. This meant that God s perfect world was not perfect anymore. Read Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-13 and discuss the choices being made. Explain how they chose to disobey God and that they now had to leave the perfect place that they had been living in but God still has a plan to fix up the broken relationship. Explain that Jesus came to show us God s love, which meant dying for our bad choices. God now gives us the opportunity to choose to accept his invitation to live his way. Lots about creation is still good (some things about the toy are still good too) but this world is no longer the way God intended. It s been spoilt, ruined, broken. The Bible tells us how that happened and God s plan to fix it. get into it Not a Happy Ending Story (5-6min) Say: When God created the world it was perfect but changes were about to happen and it would appear that it s not going to be a happy ending (though we do see God has a plan for the end of the whole story). Discuss the significance of their wrong choice and the implications of us considering our own choice. Directed Reading (8-9min) Copy the weekly Bible passage for this lesson and distribute to the children. Read Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-13, (for the older children) together. Instruct the group to read through the passage again then individually, in pairs (will need to write on the board) or collectively follow these instructions. Underline God s instruction to Adam concerning the trees (2:15-17). Highlight (or colour over lightly) the conversation between the snake and the woman (3:1-5). Circle the words: fruit, tree, middle, eat. Underline what the man said when God asked if they d eaten the fruit (v12). Put a box around the phrase that suggests Adam blamed God as well as the woman. Circle how the woman responds when God asked what had she done (v13). Put an exclamation mark (!) next to the consequences of their bad choice (v22-23). Discuss the blame game that went on. i.e. who did the man blame? (The woman) Who did the woman blame? (The snake). Who was responsible for the choices they made? (They were) Discuss why this was a wrong/bad choice to make. (They could not longer live in God s perfect world) Explain that Jesus came to show us God s love, which meant dying for our bad choices.
