1 Community Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1300 Holly Drive Richardson Texas voice fax Communi-K Volume 38 Number 13 July 3, 2013 Dear Friends, Lightening the Load The first thing we have to do is to notice that we ve loaded down this camel with so much baggage, we ll never get through this desert alive. Something has to go. Then we can begin to dump the thousand things we ve brought along until even the camel has to go and we re walking barefoot on the desert sand. There s no telling what will happen then, yet I ve heard that someone, walking in this way, has seen a burning bush. -Fr. Francis Dorff, O. Praem. Father Francis Dorff has limited contact with the outside world due to a solitary life as a hermit in the Norbertine Community of Santa Maria de la Vid Priory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Living the life of a hermit is a sacrifice, and not a sacrifice I m quite willing to take on at this stage in my life. Yet, it does have its appeal. I ve been on a mission for the past year, maybe more, to live more simply, to have less stuff in my house and in my schedule, to prepare more foods from scratch and so on. As we prepare to travel to Florida for a week of vacation with my husband s family and then spend 5 days at the General Assembly of the Christian Church, I have a desire for simplifying our packing. This is not an easy task. You see, we have a family of 5. Each person will need clothes for 4 5 days that will work not only for beach wear but also for business sessions and worship services, a couple pair of shoes each, swimsuits, towels, toiletries, beach toys, Bibles, dockets, lovies to sleep with for the children, and so on and on and on. While we re not exactly caravanning through the desert, we are trekking across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida in July, While I do drive a big, gas guzzling SUV, it happens to be one with absolutely no real cargo space. Don t get me wrong, I love my Tahoe, and the miracle of its presence in our family is a story of blessing to be told another time, but its cargo space is very, very limited. We re going to have to leave something behind. I m sure each of us will have to sacrifice something we think is important. Lightening the load is not always easy to do, but it is essential for this journey. We are going to have to purge our load of things that just aren t necessary. We all tend to carry unneeded baggage and, if we don t lighten the load, we won t have room for the things that truly do matter. In all our lives, not just in our travels, we all tend to carry baggage too, sometimes too much baggage. Our lives are full, sometimes full to excess! (More about that and some of my personal reading later). I hope you re able to lighten the load and lay down a few of the things that weigh you down. I hope you can sacrifice the things that aren t vital to this journey for the ONE that is. I ve heard someone walking this way has seen a burning bush. I hope to see you in worship on Sunday! I ll be praying for you by name (using my church directory) during the weeks that I m being physically apart from the congregation. A team of at least 24 workers is needed. Workers must be 18 years old and above. The three (3) dates that the home rebuilds will be taking place are: July 10 July 13 they will be rebuilding 3 homes July 17 July 20 they will be rebuilding 3 homes July 24 July 27 they will be rebuilding 2 homes These assignments would be for 3 days and require staying in a motel so there will have to be some costs to cover lodging and food. Carol Johns, CCC Outreach Chair, has posted a sign-up sheet on the office window, or you can contact Debby Bobbitt, NTA Outreach Coordinator, at oldm0m@yahoo.com, if you can help with this project. If the NTA cannot at least rebuild one home, maybe it can do one feed in the area to assist the workers. We understand that this would take time away from work, vacation, etc.; but we all recognize it is the Lord s work and you will be serving those in need. Isaiah 25:4 Mark your calendars the next RAIH build will start September 7. Mic Burnett and Carol Johns encourage CCC members to join them for the fall build.

August 18 Annual Hymn Fest and Ice Cream Social What a great tradition this summer event has been for many years. We will again invite United Disciples Christian (Alicia s home church) to join us.
