1 LCS talk 4: REPENTANCE AND FAITH

2 A. INTRODUCTION 1. In the first module we met Christ. We learned about the love of God manifested in sending His very own Son Jesus. that Jesus is Lord. the role of his Spirit. Now that we have met Christ, we need to begin to live Christ.

3 2. As our lives have not been fully conformed to Christ, we are now called to respond to God s love, grace and fellowship. Our proper response is repentance and faith. Mk 1:14-15.

4 MARK 1: After John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee and began preaching the Good News of God. He said, the time has come, the Kingdom of God is at hand. Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News.

5 2. As our lives have not been fully conformed to Christ... a) We need to repent, i.e., to reform our lives. And we need to believe in the gospel, i.e., have faith in Jesus and the message he brings. b) Repentance and faith go together. It is a double-action response. We cannot just have one without the other. * To just reform our lives is an inadequate response to God. We need to believe in Him and in His plans and promises. * To simply believe without doing anything to reform our lives to become pleasing to God is also inadequate. Faith necessarily needs to be connected to morality. In other words, faith without works is dead.

6 God has done so much for us. It s time to respond.

7 Our response is repentance and faith.

8 MARK 1: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

9 B. Repentance.

10 1. Metanoia. - change of mind - change in direction

11 REV 3: I know what you have done; I know that you are neither cold or hot. How I wish you were either one or the other; But because you are lukewarm, neither hot or cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth.

12 a) It is not just a simple confession of wrongdoing. Rather, it refers to a change in direction. * It is a significant change in the way you live your life: dropping an old set of ideals and values by which you live your life and adopting new ones. * Repentance affects the way you think and act, your attitudes, motives, thought and behavior.

13 b) More specifically, repentance means: * A turning away from sin, evil, wrongdoing. * Also, a turning away from running your own life. It is turning to a life of obedience to God and having Jesus on the throne of your life.

14 2. What repentance is not.

15 a. Repentance is not dependent on feelings. Rather, it depends on an objective decision to accept only God s righteousness into one s life and reject anything not compatible with this.

16 b. Repentance is not being sorry because of the consequences. We should not confuse sorrow for sin with sorrow for the consequences of sin. We must hate sin itself.

17 3. What must we do to repent?

18 a. be honest Admit that we have sin in our lives. * Call a spade a spade. If it is sin, do not call it a growth experience.

19 b. renounce sin Actively turn away from sin and decide not to do it again.

20 c. ask for God s forgiveness * 1 Jn 1:9. * Story of the prodigal son. Lk 15:11-24

21 1 JOHN 1:9 If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrong doing.

22 Luke 15:11 24 Jesus went on to say, There was once a man who had two sons. The younger son said to him, Father, give me my share of the property now. So the man divided his property between his two sons. After a few days the younger son sold his part of the property and left home with the money. He went to a country far away, where he wasted his money in reckless living. He spend everything he had. Then a severe famine spread over the country, and he was left without a thing. So he went to work for one of the citizens of the country, who sent him out to his farm to take care of the pigs. He wished he could fill himself with the beams pods the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything to eat.

23 Luke 15:11 24 At last he came to his senses and said, all my father s hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am about to starve! I will get up and go to my father and say, Father, I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired workers, So he got up and started back to his father. He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him.

24 Father, the son said, I have sinned against God and against you, I am no longer fit to be called your son. But the father called to his servants. Hurry! He said, Bring the best robe and put it to him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet

25 Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found. And so the feasting began.

26 d. receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation i.e., go to a priest for confession.

27 4. There are specific sins we need to renounce.

28 a. spiritualism and the occult

29 b. sexual wrongdoing - sexual intercourse outside marriage, adultery

30 b. sexual wrongdoing - active homosexuality

31 c. Abortion. Contraception (it is an intrinsic evil).

32 d. serious crimes

33 e. drunkenness

34 f. Not going to Sunday mass Including holydays of obligation

35 g. involvement by a Christian in non-christian religions

36 C. Faith.

37 1. Faith is belief in the Gospel a) Both belief in the messenger, Jesus, and His message. b) Means not only an intellectual belief that Jesus is the Savior, but believing in our hearts that He is our personal Savior.

38 2. Faith is a personal act and decision

39 REVELATION 3: 20 LISTEN! I stand at the door and knock, if any hear my voice and open the door, I will come to their house and eat with them and they will eat with me.

40 2. Faith is a personal act and decision a. Faith is a definite act. We must open the door if Jesus is to come into our lives.

41 2. Faith is a personal act and decision b. Faith is an individual act. We need to open the door to our own heart. No one can do that for us.

42 2. Faith is a personal act and decision c. Faith is a deliberate act. We do not have to wait for a supernatural light to flash upon us from heaven (like Paul s experience) or an emotional experience to overtake us. We already know that Jesus came into this world and died for our sins. He is now standing outside the door of our hearts and is knocking. The next move is ours.

43 2. Faith is a personal act and decision d. Faith is an urgent act. The future is uncertain and time is passing away

44 2. Faith is a personal act and decision e. Faith is an indispensable act. * It is part of our doubleaction response. * It is the step needed to receive all God has promised. Faith is relying on all God has said. Example of Peter walking on the water (Mt 14:25-29).

45 MATTHEW 14: At day break, Jesus came to them walking on the lake, when they saw him walking on the sea they were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost. And they cried Out in fear. But at once Jesus said to them, Courage! Don t be Afraid It s me.

46 Peter answered, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you. Come! And Peter got out of the boat walking on the water to go to Jesus.

47 3. What faith is not.

48 3. What faith is not. a. Faith is not just a feeling Rather, we accept God s word as truth, no matter what we feel.

49 3. What faith is not. b. Faith is not a blind leap. Peter stepped on the water because Jesus invited him to. He relied on what Jesus said because he trusted Jesus would not lie and because he knew Jesus had the power to do whatever he said he would do.

50 4. God has promised us new life. Faith is accepting that life and letting God show us how to live it. We must be willing to do whatever God wants of us, and actually do it.

51 D. Consequences of Repentance and Faith

52 ACT 16: 31 They answered BELIEVE in the LORD JESUS CHRIST and you and your household will be saved.

53 a. promise of salvation From sin, Satan, death b. promise of forgiveness and eternal life with God

54 LUKE 11 : 9 13 And I tell you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be Opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?

55 Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask HIM!

56 a. Promise of new life in the Spirit b. Greater release of the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives

57 Conclusion 1. 2,000 years ago, Jesus sounded the call to repentance and faith. It is the same call to us today. We are called to turn away from sin and all obstacles to God, and to accept Jesus as Lord.

58 2. As we respond positively, God promises us salvation from sin, forgiveness and reconciliation, eternal life, and the power of the Holy Spirit for our lives.

59 3. Accept the challenge to repent and believe in Jesus. And expect to experience the peace and joy and power of the Lord in your lives.
