1 *** 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Life, death, and faith I am so thankful for God s Word! Just when the world seems to be coming unglued, there is God s Word to give me hope, comfort, to increase my faith! Examples: Erupting volcanoes, asteroids, polar ice sheeting off, families at our borders being separated, honesty in government, drug addiction & despair. I think no one really wants families separated, but I think many want an overhaul of our immigration policies. We hear about corruption in other countries, but have we looked squarely into our own? Have our elected officials lost the will to stand up for the good of many, as opposed for their personal gain, who happen to achieve elected office because of deals? How are we doing in our own lives? I recently attended a presentation about The Burned Over District ( ) offered by the Yates Historical Society. It was a response to Puritanism. (Puritans thought the reward of eternal life was not through the sacrifice of Jesus, but instead in predestination.) Life was very hard. Houses were shacks. No neighbors. If your crops failed, you starved, or survived on whatever you could find. On average, 5 gallons of hard liquor were consumed per capita. Drunkenness and all kinds of abuse resulted. Hope for a better life after this one, was what fueled this burning of Protestant evangelization. When Catholics came into this country beginning about 1845, their idea of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus was a shocker. I left asking myself, Have we lost sharing the message of salvation in Jesus? Today we have people killing themselves with legal and illegal substances. Why? Is life so bad, so unequal that they have no hope for today? Recently, an Ascension Press podcast had to do with the danger of comparing ones self. Another had to do with suicide prevention and response. Are we so disconnected in this connected world that we are not being light and salt to others? Have we become silos? Of wealth? Of poverty? Are we practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy? What will Jesus say on our days of judgement? If history repeats itself, if we do not learn from it, are we doomed to experience more social evils? Praise be to our God, who made us for life, for sharing, to have faith. Let us help each other to remember and practice this! Patty July 1st, 2018 Weekend Mass Schedule St. Patrick's N. Teaching Positions for St. Michael School Penn Yan, NY Starting Fall 2018 Physical Education Part Time Contact: smpydcs@dor.org or Tom.Flood@dor.org Our Weekly Gift Stewardship Corner A steward is a manager of his or her gifts received from the Master, who is God our Father. Scripture tells us how to use our material possessions: 1) first point on our budget is to give some percentage of what is received back to the Giver; 2) we use the rest for our own personal use; 3) we should share some of that money with those in need. Our weekly gift to God should be a gift that is acceptable a fitting expression of our esteem & respect of God, sacrificial causing some degree of burden to the giver, and proportional truly saying: God, I love You and thank you for all YOU have given me. This gift of mine should be a weekly account of my stewardship to God, my generous & loving Father. When we give our material sacrifice to God we remind ourselves of our dependence on Him. This also helps us to be more concerned to help our neighbor. This is an example of how the giver benefits most by being generous to God. A Yankee Doodle!! Page 4 of 6
