2 Welcome to Christ Church WELCOME to our celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We hope that this service is a meaningful part of your observance of Christmas, and we welcome both our regular worshippers and those who are with us only occasionally with equal joy. We also welcome you if you are looking for a church home, or if God is calling you into a closer relationship this Christmas. Christ Church is a vibrant Christian community where you can deepen your relationship with God, experience God s presence and love in your life, learn how to be more faithful in your spiritual and daily life, and find ways to make a difference in the community. At Christ Church we have programs of Christian education and nurture for all ages. There is a thriving nursery and Church School for our children, a committed youth program, and opportunities for adults to learn and grow in faith. We encourage exploration of the spiritual practices of prayer, meditation, the labyrinth, and personal spiritual direction. The Music of Christ Church is both extensive and exciting, and fulfills an integral role within our worship, eliciting from us our very best in prayer and praise to God. In addition to the liturgical offerings of our choirs, we are fortunate to offer regular concerts throughout the year. We always welcome both those who make music and who love music to be a part of our community. We are committed also to service in our wider community. Our parishioners are active in many ways to help those who are in any kind of need, and Christ Church supports a wide range of agencies in our city. From giving assistance to those who come through our doors, to building houses for Habitat for Humanity, Christ Church continues its ministry to those in need. Our annual Christmas Gift Project provides hundreds of gifts for the clients of City agencies, and the proceeds from our recent Gifts and Greens Sale and our annual Outreach Dinner and Antiques Show provide significant support to vital agencies serving metro-detroit. For many years Christ Church has striven to be welcoming and inclusive of all. We rejoice in the diversity of our Church and our willingness to ask the hard questions about life and faith. There are no easy answers in life, and there are no easy answers in faith. So we find that we explore these difficult questions best as a community, and we give strength to each other on our journey. Christ Church welcomes all those who seek a Christian community where all may find a home, regardless of race, sexual orientation, marital status, economic circumstances, or physical and mental challenges. We welcome you, too, if you have never been involved much in a spiritual community or church before. Christmas is an invitation to each of us here today to become more deeply involved, to be a part of something larger than ourselves. God calls each of us to a unique relationship of love and commitment, and we encourage you to enter into that exciting pilgrimage with us here at Christ Church Grosse Pointe, where you will find a warm welcome. The Rector, Staff, Wardens, Vestry, and of Christ Church wish you a blessed Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

When sin departs before his grace, Then life and health come in its place; Angels and men with joy may sing, All for to see the newborn King. Then why should men on earth be so sad, Since our Redeemer made us glad, When from our sin he set us free, All for to gain our liberty? 7 The Collect of the Nativity Celebrant The Lord be with you. b œ œ œ œ And al - so with you. Let us pray. O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Almighty God, on this night your Son Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary for us and for our salvation; bless this crèche which we have prepared to celebrate his holy birth; may all who see it be strengthened in faith and receive the fullness of life he came to bring; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GOD The people are seated for the readings. The First Lesson Isaiah 9:2-7 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. the feast of the nativity of our lord jesus christ 7

8 Psalm 96 Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the Lord who made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honor and power. Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; * bring offerings and come into his courts. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. Tell it out among the nations: The Lord is King! * he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is therein. Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord when he comes, * when he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with his truth. chant: George Thalben-Ball The Second Lesson Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 10 The Gospel Luke 2:1-20 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors! When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. Sermon The Reverend Andrew Van Culin A brief period of silence is observed for reflection on the sermon. The people stand. 10 christ church grosse pointe

11 The Nicene Creed The Prayers of the Leader We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Holy Lord, in your wisdom you made the world and came to dwell among us. Hear your people as we pray, saying, Glory to God in the highest. We pray for your Church, that it may be a light shining in the darkness. Glory to God in the highest. We pray that all who seek you may find welcome at our door. Glory to God in the highest. We pray for our country and for those who lead us, that they may be filled with your wisdom and humility. Glory to God in the highest. We pray for those who live in fear, that your peace may fill their hearts. Glory to God in the highest. the feast of the nativity of our lord jesus christ 11

12 We pray for those who are hungry, homeless, or alone; that we may find grace to serve them in your name. Glory to God in the highest. We pray for the sick, that we may share your healing love with them. Glory to God in the highest. We pray for those who have died, that we may share your comfort and love with those who mourn. Glory to God in the highest. Be born in our hearts, Lord Jesus, that we may be filled with the joy of your presence, and carry your love into the world around us. Glory to God in the highest. The congregation may add petitions and thanksgivings. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Celebrant Almighty God who has turned our darkness into a marvelous light through the gift of your Son: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, that all may come to the peace you promise in Him, who is Lord and God, this day and forever. Amen. The Confession and Absolution Gospeller Hear the words of the angel to Joseph: You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. Therefore let us seek the forgiveness of God through Jesus the Savior of the world. The people kneel as they are able. A brief period of silence is observed. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 15 THE HOLY COMMUNION The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus & Benedictus Missa Brevis in D, K. 194 W. The people kneel or remain standing. Holy, Holy, Holy, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. the feast of the nativity of our lord jesus christ 15

16 On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary and Joseph and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The Lord s Prayer Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 16 christ church grosse pointe

Angels hover ever nearer, Looking on your smiling face. I will hold you, close enfold you; Close your eyes, go to sleep. Anthem In the bleak midwinter Harold Darke ( ) In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day, A breast full of milk, and a manger full of hay. Enough for Him, whom angels, fall down before, The ox and ass and camel, which adore. Lovely darling, I will guard you, Keep you from all woe and harm. Softly, gently I will rock you, Resting sweetly on my arm. May you slumber e er so softly; Dream of visions wondrous fair. I will hold you, close enfold you; Close your eyes, now go to sleep. What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb If I were a wise man, I would do my part. Yet what I can I give Him, give my heart. Christina Rossetti ( ) 18 christ church grosse pointe

27 Christ Church Grosse Pointe Wherever you are in your journey of faith, there is a place for you here. Worship The worship of God lies at the center of all that we do at Christ Church and forms the foundation of our Christian community. Each week, each day even, we gather in prayer to offer our gratitude to God from who all life proceeds. And it is from this great well of gratitude that our lives and ministries our hospitality and fellowship, our service to the poor within our community, and our formation as Christians collectively flow. Music Music is at the heart of our Christ Church community and is one of the primary ways in which we worship, love, and serve our Lord Jesus Christ. Our choirs sing at over 100 choral worship services every year. The choirs also sing at special liturgies, including the Advent and Epiphany Processions, Christmas and Easter Lessons and Carols, and the triduum liturgies in Holy Week. Connect Many people find the anonymity of a large parish safe when they first begin attending. At some point, however, most seek a community, a way to join with a group of people sharing the same journey. We gather all the time in different kinds of groups: for prayer, study, to help others, and just for fun. Whether you don t know what a nave is or you are an expert at navigating Coffee Hour, there is a community here for you. Serve At Christ Church we believe that the expression of our Christian faith and life is made complete in the life of service. Throughout the year our Outreach Ministries provide opportunities for members to bring God s love into the our community and world through acts of compassion and service. In partenrship with area agencies we build homes, feed the hungry, visit the sick and homebound, and clothe the poor. Children & Youth Christ Church is a place where children are loved and valued, and we strive to provide fertile ground for our children to grow spiritually, physically, mentally, and socially. The Church School offers a variety of regular classes and activities for children through the 5th grade. We work together to lead our children through age-appropriate lessons, crafts, and interactive discussions as they explore a new theme each week. Learn Christian Formation is a multi-faceted and life-long process of transformation. Christian Education gives language to our experiences of the Holy and provides us a place to explore the deep questions and implication of our faith. It is our profound hope that the Educational programs offered at Christ Church for children, youth, and adults will aid you and your children in your journey of faith.
