The theme of this September issue is Your Kingdom Come (Matthew 6:10). We are living in amazing days where God is pouring out His Spirit on a scale not seen in living memory. But this outpouring of God s Spirit serves an ancient purpose, first revealed to Adam. God created man to be fruitful, increase, have dominion and subdue (Genesis 1:28). When God breathed life into Adam, he became a man of two worlds: a man of the dust and a man of the Spirit, unlike any other created being. We too are people of dust and the Spirit, commissioned to bring the reign of God on earth. His entire earthly life, including the whole of His public ministry, was focused on one thing: announcing and establishing the Kingdom of God on earth. He announced it with His preaching, teaching and healing; He established it through His death and resurrection. The first recorded words of Jesus deal with the Kingdom: From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 We need His anointing to empower us to carry out His command The Kingdom of God is more than a good method or a great message Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:9-10) Because the Kingdom of God was so central to the purposes and plans of Christ, He wanted His followers to constantly seek after its unveiling. If the Kingdom of heaven was Jesus central priority, it must be ours as well. We must keep the main thing the main thing. The phrases, Kingdom of God and Kingdom of heaven are a common and fundamental part of Biblical theology, with the word Kingdom appearing 150 times in the New Testament alone. Its root meaning is God s royal kingship and power, His divine authority to lead and rule. God is the supreme ruler over all creation. The royal rule of Christ is invincible, imperishable and will last forever. (see Colossians 1:13-20 and Revelation 1:8) Jesus declared that this Gospel of the Kingdom was to be preached in all the world. Our mission on earth is to obey Him, and we need His anointing to empower us to carry out His command. As the body of Christ, we are to live a life so yielded to Jesus that the Kingdom (the power and authority) of God is recognized here on earth, even by those who do not believe. We are to be so obedient to our King that His Kingdom will be expressed on this earth to an ever-increasing extent. This will happen regardless of the growing influence of the powers of darkness, and at the end of the age, the Kingdom will be shown in its fullness. The Kingdom of God is more than a good method or a great message. It consists not of eloquent words but is a demonstration of the power of God. A well-delivered sermon or an expertly reasoned teaching is not enough; people need to see God s power on display. The people of this generation are ready to see God s Word displayed in power and action. Only then will they begin to see and believe in the Kingdom of God and to trust Christ as their Saviour and Lord. As Jesus Himself stated boldly: Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. (John 14:12-14) Every true believer is to be doing the works of Jesus; this is the evidence of the Kingdom of God. We are here on earth to do the very works of Jesus. This is the ministry of the Kingdom. If we are to be doing the works of Jesus, we would do well to understand what works He did. Matthew 4:23-24 gives us a clear picture: And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. We are to preach the good news of salvation, teach the Scriptures, heal the sick, and set the captives free - just as Jesus did. To distract us from declaring and displaying these works, the enemy of our souls attempts to get us to look and live in the past. Many believers today seem to prefer to reminisce about the mighty moves of God in former times rather than get involved with what He is doing now. While we should be thankful to God for every move of the Spirit, we can t live life always looking back. We aren t going to move forward very fast if we re always staring in the rear-view mirror. We must see God at work in our day today. God is the God of the NOW! He is the great I AM who encompasses eternity. Paul describes our mission and commission in terms of government and diplomacy when he says that we are ambassadors for Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:20) The word ambassador is the English translation of the Greek word presbeuo, which has the root meaning of being a senior representative possessing power and authority. An ambassador represents the government that appointed him. His power and authority are delegated. When he speaks in his official We aren t going to move forward very fast if we re always staring in the rear-view mirror capacity as ambassador, his voice is the voice of the government he represents. In the same way, we, as God s ambassadors, represent His government - His Kingdom here on earth. He has delegated His power and authority to us for that purpose. If we are His ambassadors, we have His authority to act in His name and on His behalf. This power and authority are actively at work in us right now! The Kingdom of heaven is at hand! We are to declare the same message as our Master. He has entrusted His body, the church, which he established, with the administration and expansion of His Kingdom on earth. We must extend to the world the same invitation as Jesus did when He said, Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) This is an open-ended invitation for all who will to enter the Kingdom of heaven. The time is now! The Kingdom of heaven is at hand! 4 Kenya Update Jambo from Chris & Chrissy Dale in Kenya We are at the halfway point of our time in Nakuru, Kenya as we write this news to you, and it has been an amazing time of stretching, blessing and equipping, not only for the people we have been coming alongside, but for us both, too! We came out to Kenya with a mandate to train and equip congregations that we made contact with during the mission trip in March, when we took part in the Revival Fires crusade. We realised during the second week of this trip that there is little empowering for church members to do the works that Jesus did and commanded us also to do. This situation prevails despite the fact that there are so many churches, almost one on every corner. There are also many lost and desperately poor people in Nakuru s slum areas. They have little to live for and urgently need the love of Jesus to come into their hearts. We have come alongside four pastors and concentrated on praying for believers in their fellowships. The other area of work which we are involved in is in providing the Encounter Retreat to a group of pastors. This is a necessary area of ministry for the church in Kenya. Kenya has seen many miracles, signs and wonders but has received little teaching on healing the wounds of the heart. The groups that we are working with are at various stages in the training process. Three of the groups are in slum areas while one community actually live on the site of the city s refuse dump. In the slum areas, we meet people on the street and in their homes, and evangelise by utilising the model that Rodney Howard-Browne shared at the Great Awakening in Dudley. We pray for those who need healing, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons, prophesy and raise the dead - well, we would do but so far we have not met any dead people! After a fruitful mission trip in March this year, Revival Fires sent Chris and Chrissy into Kenya to continue investing in the region. Here is a report of their work Here are just a few of many testimonies as God moves here in Kenya! Just the other week, Chris and his team met a family of Tanzanian immigrants living in the slum. The woman of the home had giant holes in her teeth and was in tremendous pain. After receiving prayer from one of our team members, all pain left her mouth! At another time, Chrissy s team met with a family whose daughter was suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts. By the time the team left the house, the sweet, restoring presence of God was resting there. The woman was totally set free from her depression after a team member prayed and ministered to her. 5 APOSTOLIC T E A M S by Bill Johnson People have started to gather around fathers instead of doctrine For centuries, the people of God have gathered together around specific truths. Denominations and organizations have been formed to unite these groups of believers. Having common belief systems has helped to build unity within particular groups and define their purpose. Historically, these groups were formed from people who were usually newly saved, or were asked to leave whatever denomination they were previously a part of. Unity based on common doctrines has a measure of success. But there is an inherent problem with this approach. Unity of this nature is based upon uniformity. When God is saying something new, those who are listening are usually asked by their leaders to leave the group they were a part of. Their new found convictions and beliefs are considered threatening and divisive. If the whole group doesn t move in step with what God is saying, there will be a break in fellowship. When agreement in nonessential beliefs are considered necessary for fellowship, then division is natural and to be expected. While doctrine is vitally important, it is not a strong enough foundation to bear the weight of His glory that is about to be revealed through true unity. Change is in the Air There are major changes in the wind right now. For the last several years, people have started to gather around fathers instead of doctrine. In the natural, it would be easy to imagine a father with two very different children one politically liberal and the other conservative. While discussions would probably be quite lively at the evening meal, they would not bring an end to the family. Gathering around fathers gives a stability that enables people to endure differences in opinion without falling under the influence of the spirit of offense. Fathers bring an element of peace that is impossible without them. Spiritual Fathers Apostles are first and foremost fathers by nature. True fathers continually make choices for the wellbeing of their children with little thought to personal sacrifice. They are not jealous when their children succeed, but instead are overjoyed because of those successes. It is normal for a father to desire his children to surpass him in every way. Brothers compete, fathers do not. In the same way that a father and mother bring stability to a home, so the apostles and prophets are the stability of the church. The Apostle Paul calls them the church s foundation. Good foundations bring stability. The concept of team ministry starts with the apostles and prophets. Stability is the primary fruit of the ministry of the apostolic team. Team Make-up Apostolic teams are not necessarily made up of just apostles and prophets. They are a group of people that carry the family mission without selfish agendas. They are sent by their leadership, and entrusted with delegated authority to establish God s rule in their realm of experience and expertise. When they go with that heart, they carry an apostolic anointing because they function under the umbrella of the apostles authority. We can t be co-missioned until we re in sub-mission to the primary mission. This is true of every believer before God. But it is especially true of apostolic teams. Setting aside personal agendas is a big part of the success of team ministry. Many teams have failed in their mission because of an individual who wanted his/her gift or opinion to be recognised. Measure of Rule A big misunderstanding occurs when apostles think they have the same measure of authority in every geographical location. When Paul went to Jerusalem to participate Apostles carry a blueprint in their hearts concerning the church and God s purposes on the earth in the first Apostolic Council, he submitted his experiences to the other apostles who had also gathered there. It wasn t until James, the apostle in Jerusalem, spoke, that there were any conclusions. A true apostle carries their apostolic authority wherever they go, but it is foolish for him to not recognize local authority. The same is true with apostolic teams. It is their respect for the local church and the Biblical authority that helps them to serve effectively. Authority, like favour, is for the benefit of others. It is not a title to help in building one s own self-esteem, and is never for personal gain. For that reason, the apostle is at the bottom of the stack - the least of all. The title simply recognises function. And that function is to make others better and more complete in their walk with the Lord. The Purpose of the Title Throughout history there have been many ordinary individuals who have become desperate for God in unusual ways, and have sought God with reckless abandon. 6 The Holy Spirit brings constant change, and to house Him means to embrace flexibility as a way of life Authority, like favour, is for the benefit of others made them appear extraordinary. Their breakthrough made them household names with remarkable gifts and ministries. But when God gives someone an unusual gift, it is never for the purpose of acquiring admiration and fame, or even drawing big crowds. Those things are normal byproducts, but they are not the purpose. The place of favour that one gets as a result of God s unusual touch on their lives is a God given position to equip others. It is God s heart to take those high points of human experience in the man or woman of God and make them the new norm for the believer. Equipping the saints becomes the focus of true fathers. The Spirit of Revelation One of the things that helped to keep the early church strong and healthy was their continual devotion to the apostles doctrine. However, you ll notice that there is no mention of a list of beliefs that the Bible declares to be the official record of important doctrines. It is safe to say the apostles doctrine is referring to something other than a specific list. Peter understood this when he exhorted the church concerning present truth. That phrase is to direct our attention to that which the Lord is emphasizing for this season. That is the apostles doctrine. The word coming from apostles is to bring clarification of the Father s focus for the church, and in turn strengthen our resolve to His purposes. Fresh revelation carries fresh fire, which helps us to maintain the much needed fire in our souls. Apostles carry a blueprint in their hearts concerning the church and God s purposes on the earth. They are used to bring fresh revelation to the church. Apostolic teams are sent to represent their spiritual father, and carry the word that has been entrusted to their tribe. They help bring an understanding and establish an order that is needed in the particular location they are sent to. The Need for Others God never gives the whole picture of His plan for the church to one father/apostle, or even to one tribe. Scriptures declare that we have the mind of Christ, not I. Dependence upon the whole is essential for us to grow up in a way that pleases Christ. As the various tribes learn to work together we will see a more complete picture of the Father s intent for planet earth. The revelation carried by apostles and the five-fold ministry will result in a church coming to a common knowledge of the Son of God. Much division presently exists in this area. He is our common focus. A study of the scriptures without the Holy Spirit giving understanding creates much religious conflict. Division exists because people are committed to different levels of truth that appear contradictory. Fathers are necessary to sort these things out. Variety, without uniformity, is important. These teams carry revelation to help the church to live out of a common revelation of Jesus - who He is, and who we are because of Him. God s aim is to fulfill His word in John 14:17 - As He is, so are we in this world. We are to become like the Jesus revealed in Revelation chapter one - resurrected and glorified. We are not headed for the cross, we live from the cross. Apostolic revelation has that in mind. The Day of Power One of the more notable prophets of our day recently told me that he wouldn t be able to come into all that God had created him for until the apostles came forth to their appointed place. The apostles help release the prophets into their destiny, and vice versa. In a sense, they complete each other. Apostolic order without apostolic power is to be questioned. Order based on Biblical principle that is lacking Biblical power is tragic at best, and deceptive at worst. Order does not exist unto itself. The wineskin exists for the wine. The wine is the focus. All order exists to house God Himself - not to restrict Him, but to accurately express Him. Wineskins need to flex in order to be useful, because of the expanding nature of the wine in the fermenting process. The Holy Spirit brings constant change, and to house Him means to embrace flexibility as a way of life. The goal is not to create a perfect structure or government. It is to create one that recognizes Him, and flexes with His changes. Last Days Assignment All of this serves one purpose - Jesus is returning for a bride. For this to happen the harvest must be brought in, and must be cleaned. He s not returning for a bride that He has to heal up and put together like a puzzle in heaven. He is returning for a bride whose body is in equal proportion to her head, and whose parts work together in coordination. It s called a glorious church, without spot or wrinkle in scripture. Anything less is an illegitimate vision. The bride is to make herself ready for that day. As Larry Randolph puts it, it is a perversion to think that Jesus will dress the bride before the wedding. Our assignment is clear, and the gifts are in place. And they are all expressions of Jesus Himself. But they are simple in purpose. Re-present Jesus to the world! The fire of God must rest in the souls of men. Christians without passion are almost as great a mystery as Christians without purpose. Apostolic teams carry fresh fire with divine purpose. They enlist men and women to God s dream, and in the process the church steps into her destiny. 8 the Power of the Age to Come Derek Morphew is a scholar and pastor based in South Africa. Serving in the Vineyard movement, he heads up Vineyard Bible Institute as well as Vineyard International Publishing and teaches extensively on the Kingdom of God. Something mysterious, unexpected and miraculous occurred in Jesus and the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost We are caught in the battle between two ages The world into which Jesus came preaching the Kingdom had expectations that had grown through the centuries. These expectations were based on the coming of the Kingdom in the Exodus event, the conquest of the Promised Land and the Davidic Monarchy. They were further shaped by the loss of the Kingdom in the exile and the prophetic promises of Isaiah and Daniel in particular. A day would come when God would again intervene for Israel, in a final, overwhelming moment, which would terminate history as we know it and begin life at a totally new level in the Messianic age, or the age to come. The Day of Judgment would be the event that would terminate this age (the end) and usher in the coming age. From the prophetic language regarding this end, we derive the word eschatology (Greek eschatos means end ). The prophets spoke of the Day of the Lord, the last days, or that day. Jesus came announcing that such a day had dawned with his arrival. Something mysterious, unexpected (especially to the prophets of Israel) and miraculous occurred in Jesus and the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost. The power of the future age broke through, from the future, into the present, setting up an altogether new dimension. Before this age has finally ended, the future age has already begun. Around us is a world that lives in one dimension, in this present age, while we experience Jesus and the life in the Spirit in a new dimension, the life of the coming age, or eternal life lived now. The powers and presence of the future age are continually available. But the Kingdom continues to come, through the Holy Spirit. The Kingdom enters our lives and we become sons and daughters of the Kingdom. It begins to change our lives towards an upside-down value system. We discover that we are caught in the battle between two ages. The Kingdom of God is actually the big picture. It expands our vision to see God s total plan for the restoration of all creation and all humanity. The Kingdom holds together the whole of the redemptive story, from creation, through the fall, the history of Israel, the coming of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, through world missions, to the Second Coming and into the future age that follows. One major implication of understanding the Kingdom is that the big picture must never be reduced to something less than that. The word we use for this is reductionism, the tendency to take the pie and select only one slice, instead of the whole pie. Or perhaps we should say the Kingdom is like one huge chocolate cake. 10 CROSSING OVER INTO THE KINGDOM // AN ARTICLE BY /// PAUL KEITH DAVIS // Throughout the church, one cry has uniformly echoed from the hearts of God s people - Send us Your Power! Without controversy, it is much needed. We will not attain our high calling and prophetic destiny without His Empowering Presence. However, Isaiah 11:2 provides an enlightening clue to the release of the Spirit of Might and Power. It is the accompanying Spirit of Counsel from the heart of the Lord providing a message of preparation for this great release. In His admonition to this generation, the Lord gives divine counsel. His advice to us is to buy from Him gold refined by fire that we may become rich and white garments that the shame of our nakedness would not be revealed. He further instructs us to receive His eye salve that our eyes would be illuminated to see the unseen. By meticulously following the Spirit of Counsel, the Spirit of Power and Might is dispersed to equip us as overcomers, and qualify us to sit with Him on His throne, as He overcame and sat with His Father on His // We must seek first the Kingdom of Heaven, which is both Word and Power /// throne. It is in this place that the Bride of Christ will emerge as Priests and Kings to appropriate the Lord s victory in the heavens and on earth. Revelation 3: I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. Priests and Kings Revelation 5: And they sang a new song, saying: You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth. The administration of the priestly ministry equips and enables us to relate and affect the heavenly realm through worship, intimacy and relationship with the Lord. This divine office allows us to enter His sanctuary and draw near to His table and minister to Him by offering the sacrifices of praise, worship, intercession and mutual exchange. (Ezekiel 44:14-16) The administration of the Kingly ministry provides spiritual authority that allows us to relate to and influence the earthly realm as overcomers, and delegate His victory and dominion achieved through His death and resurrection. Each of these Ministries or divine offices has a specific function and related sphere of authority. Spirit of Counsel and Might There is presently a message of preparation through the Spirit of Counsel for those whom the Lord is grooming to function in a governmental role. This is to release the Spirit of Might and Power to bring judgment and dominion in the earth through His delegated authority. This will be the establishing of His Kingdom. We must seek first the Kingdom of Heaven, which is both Word and Power expressed through living stones, who are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:5) This is in contrast to the prevailing thought of some that we are going to be caught up and experience the kingdom only in heaven. The present work of grooming and training will precede the catching away and relates to our being empowered to rule in the earth, delegating the Lord s victory on the earth before leaving the earthly realm. We shall taste the good Word of God and the Power of the age to come on this side of heaven as the Lord s enemies are subdued and put under His feet. Then the Lord can come for His bride without spot or wrinkle, and the restoration of all things is accomplished. (Acts 3:21) Reigning on Earth Revelation 5:10 points out that we shall reign on the earth. Naturally, this points to the Millennial Kingdom. However, to be ready for this great purpose, there is a present ruling or overcoming in our lives being achieved before we enter into the fullness of the Millennial Kingdom. For this function to be fulfilled, we must become the habitation of God and His dwelling place; God not merely moving through us, but RESTING IN US. This sets us up for our priestly ministry. 11 The Giants of the Land The enemies that inhabit this promised land are the strongholds and dominions that exist in our soul that must be overcome through the appropriation of the blood of Christ and His victory. These enemies are too great for us in our own strength, just as the inhabitants of the promised land were too great for Israel to defeat without the Lord s supernatural intervention. Although ten of the spies returned with evil reports, it remained the decision of the people to choose which report to believe. They could have chosen to believe the faithful report of Joshua and Caleb. In so doing, they would have experienced the great power of the Captain of the Lord s Host, and enjoyed all the fullness of God s provision. So is it with us today. Although // We shall taste the good Word of God and the Power of the age to come on this side of heaven /// the strongholds and worldliness in us seems insurmountable, the Lord has pledged in His word that we have the precious // We will not attain our high calling and prophetic destiny without His Empowering Presence /// and magnificent promises by which we can become partakers of the divine nature and escape the corruption of this world and its lusts. (2 Peter 1:4) Our part is in yielding to the Holy Spirit and allowing this work to be realized. The Keys of the Kingdom For us to be ambassadors for Christ and His representation on the earth, we must be trustworthy stewards of the power and authority that accompanies the keys of the Kingdom. This can be achieved only as we share in the Lord s nature and character, overcoming the corruption that presently exists in our soul. As we allow the Holy Spirit to reveal and extract the seeds of corruption, the necessary character and divine attributes will be produced and that will make us candidates to be, not only called, but also chosen and sent. That is the message His voice is proclaiming as he stands at the door of our hearts and knocks, searching for those who will open to Him and dine. Tokens of this Reality The Lord has given to us tokens of this reality through individuals who have crossed over as spies and returned with the fruit of this land and shared it with the body of Christ. These individuals have been prototypes of an entire company of people who are to function in this governmental role, equipped with the keys of the Kingdom, tasting the good word of God and the power of the age to come. Some have already lived their life of victory and entered their reward, such as John G. Lake. Others are presently emerging having tasted of this reality. Even while we were in a prophetic conference in Kelowna, Canada, a precious sister who is a missionary to Mozambique, participated in the conference with us. As she shared her heart with us and the experiences she has had with the Lord in recent days as He pruned and prepared her, the Holy Spirit spoke to me and revealed that she was likened to one of the spies who ventured over into the promise and returned with portions of the fruit of the land. As she shared her report, it remained up to the people to choose to believe or reject the report. Her message was likewise one of preparation as she disclosed how the Lord glued her to the floor for seven days and seven nights, moving upon and through her with waves of His // We shall reign on the earth. This is our promise and this is our destiny /// Spirit revealing areas and issues that were contrary to His nature. Much took place during this season, but the end result was the death to self and selfish motives and agendas and the embracing of His Spirit as a dwelling place, allowing total dominion in her spirit, soul, and body according to 1 Thessalonians 5:23. Tremendous miracles, signs and wonders began to emerge in her ministry with countless reports of healings and even creative miracles as sight was restored, lame limbs given strength and cancers healed. Crossing over to the Promise This is our promise and this is our destiny as the dawning of a new day continues to ascend to the spiritual heights from which the Priests and Kings will become apparent. From this sacred place, these anointed vessels will begin to function in their governmental role and appropriate the Lord s great victory. Let us give ear to the Spirit of Counsel preceding the release of the Spirit of Might and Power.
